Ginger may have a profound effect in reducing the risk and treatment of hepatic steatosis, the early stage of liver disease, some scientists suggested.
Hepatic steatosis or fatty liver is a condition that caused excess fat to accumulate in the liver.

At the early stage of hepatic steatosis, the patient may not experience any symptoms. [6]-Gingerol (100 µmol/l) inhibited OA-induced triglyceride and inflammatory marker accumulation in HepG2 cells.

In the study of male golden hamsters were dosed orally with [6]-gingerol (25, 50 or 100 mg/kg/day) once daily for 8 weeks after being fed a high-fat diet (HFD) for 2 weeks, injection of [6]-Gingerol (100 mg/kg/day) alleviated liver steatosis, inflammation, and reversed plasma markers of metabolic syndrome in HFD-fed hamsters.

[6]-gingerol also attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokine genes and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) increased in the HFD group.

These results indicated a significant effect of [6]-Gingerol in the attenuation of HFD-induced steatohepatitis by downregulating NF-κB-mediated inflammatory responses and reducing hepatic lipogenic gene expression.

Additionally, in the concern of widespread Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) may reach epidemic proportions, Dr. Sahebkar A. launched a study to evaluate the ginger effect at the "two-stage hypothesis" proposed for the pathophysiology of NAFLD, insulin resistance, oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines among the key promoters of the disease.

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.
During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off harmful microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation that affects tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of diseases associated with vascular inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).

According to the analysis of cultured endothelial cells, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-in atherosclerotic plaque formation by inhibiting endothelial adhesion molecules.

The action of ArCC against vascular inflammation was attributed by decreasing the expression of a protein associated with cytokine production.

In hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) showed a similar effect on the inhibition of aortic inflammatory cytokines, reduction of plaque formation accompanied by the lowering of the leukocyte infiltration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases".

Taken altogether, red Chinese cabbage processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a dietary vegetable for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of anthocyanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
A cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of neurons, leading to problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese, and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).


Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient's MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors of cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Brussels sprout is a species of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea), that belongs to the family of Brassicaceae and was cultivated since ancient Rome.


With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment, researchers examined the effects of dietary intake of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extracts against parameters associated with the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia.

According to the results of the experiment, sulforaphane (SFN) derived from broccoli showed a strong effect in the activation of the transcription factor Nrf2 regulated by Keap1, a cytoplasmic protein that plays a central role against the stimulation of oxidative stress.

Moreover, pretreatment with SFN attenuated cognitive deficit, the increase in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells, and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus found in patients with a neurodegenerative disease caused by oxidative stress induced by administration of phencyclidine (PCP).

In other words, PCP-induced cognitive deficits were inhibited by the subsequent subchronic administration of SFN.

Believe it or not, chronic dietary intake of glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) during juvenile and adolescence not only prevented the onset of PCP-induced cognitive deficit but also increased in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the brain at adulthood.

The results strongly suggested the NRF2 gene and the KEAP1 gene had an epistatic effect on gene reaction on cognitive impairment (e.g., working memory and processing speed) in patients with schizophrenia.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "SFN may have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Therefore, the dietary intake of SFN-rich broccoli sprouts during juvenile and adolescence may prevent the onset of psychosis in adulthood".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered a functional food for the promotion of cognitive deficit, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Hypertension is a common syndrome characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

The exacted causes of high blood pressure are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that an unhealthy lifestyle and diet and physical inactivities are the major contributors to the onset of the syndrome.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

Dr. Borgi L the lead author, after taking into account other confounders, said, " greater long-term intake and increased consumption of whole fruits may reduce the risk of developing hypertension".

These results indicated that only daily and regular and increased intake of fruits and certain vegetables may reduce the risk of hypertension in the longer-term.

In the investigation of the dried purple carrot effect in reduced risk of hypertension in obese individuals, researchers at The University of Queensland conducted a study containing 16 males (aged 53.1 ± 7.6 years with a mean BMI of 32.8 ± 4.6 kg/m(2)) with normal lipid and inflammatory markers.

Application of 118.5 mg/day of anthocyanins and 259.2 mg/day of phenolic acids for 4 weeks to participants showed a statistically insignificant change in hypertension.

Compared to isolated phytochemicals researchers suggested that not all bioactive compounds exert a protective effect against the onset of hypertension, it is likely that the anthocyanins are responsible for the antioxidant activity in inhibited excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) iN initiation and exacerbated hypertension.

The findings suggested that whole food carrot may be considered as functional food in reduced risk of hypertension if it is taken daily and regularly over a long term period.


Therefore, people who want to optimize their blood pressure level may want to add some portions of carrots to their diet.

Primary glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

In the US, the median age of glioblastoma diagnosed is 64 years and the incidence of the disease onset is 1.6 times higher in males compared to females.

Proteins are associated with neuron growth and development and a key role in glial differentiation. such as GAP43, MAP2, and GFAP were exhibited by the injection of the combination.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These data demonstrate anti-stress and glial differentiation potential of CucWi-N (a novel combination of Cuc and Wi-N) that could be recruited in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical avenues and hence warrant further evaluation and mechanistic studies.".
