#Healthyfood #RedChineseCabbage Inhibits the Onset of #VascularInflammatoryDiseases Throught Its Antiinflammatory Properties, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.
During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off harmful microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation that affects tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Certain risk factors such as long-term exposure to irritants, such as industrial chemicals or polluted air, the increase in age, being obesity or obesity, low sex hormone production, sleep disorder, and diet.

Furthermore, vascular inflammation increased the risk of CVD are found to have a close link between inflammation and redox balance or oxidative stress caused by the imbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidants produced by the host.

Dr. Steven S, the lead scientist said, "Clinical trials have identified chronic inflammatory disorders as cardiovascular risks, and recent research has revealed a contribution by various inflammatory cells to vascular oxidative stress. Atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease are closely associated with inflammation, probably due to the close interaction of inflammation with oxidative stress".

And, "The value of immunomodulation for the treatment of cardiovascular disease was recently supported by large-scale clinical trials demonstrating reduced cardiovascular mortality in patients with the established atherosclerotic disease when treated by highly specific anti-inflammatory therapies (e.g., using monoclonal antibodies against cytokines)".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belonging to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded with a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of diseases associated with vascular inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activities of an anthocyanin-rich extract from red Chinese cabbage (ArCC).

According to the analysis of cultured endothelial cells, ArCC treatment suppressed monocyte adhesion to tumor necrosis factor-α-in atherosclerotic plaque formation by inhibiting endothelial adhesion molecules.

The action of ArCC against vascular inflammation was attributed by decreasing the expression of a protein associated with cytokine production.

In hyperlipidemic apolipoprotein E-deficient mice, administration of ArCC (150 or 300 mg/kg/day) showed a similar effect on the inhibition of aortic inflammatory cytokines, reduction of plaque formation accompanied by the lowering of the leukocyte infiltration.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The results suggest that the consumption of anthocyanin-rich red Chinese cabbage is closely correlated with lowering the risk of vascular inflammatory diseases".

Taken altogether, red Chinese cabbage processed abundantly anthocyanin may be considered a dietary vegetable for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammatory diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of anthocyanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Sulforaphane-Rich #BroccoliSproutExtracts Inhibits the Onset of #CognitiveDeficits, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
A cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of neurons, leading to problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese, and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).

Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient's MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors of cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Brussels sprout is a species of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea), that belongs to the family of Brassicaceae and was cultivated since ancient Rome.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment, researchers examined the effects of dietary intake of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extracts against parameters associated with the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia.

According to the results of the experiment, sulforaphane (SFN) derived from broccoli showed a strong effect in the activation of the transcription factor Nrf2 regulated by Keap1, a cytoplasmic protein that plays a central role against the stimulation of oxidative stress.

Moreover, pretreatment with SFN attenuated cognitive deficit, the increase in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells, and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus found in patients with a neurodegenerative disease caused by oxidative stress induced by administration of phencyclidine (PCP).

In other words, PCP-induced cognitive deficits were inhibited by the subsequent subchronic administration of SFN.

Believe it or not, chronic dietary intake of glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) during juvenile and adolescence not only prevented the onset of PCP-induced cognitive deficit but also increased in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the brain at adulthood.

The results strongly suggested the NRF2 gene and the KEAP1 gene had an epistatic effect on gene reaction on cognitive impairment (e.g., working memory and processing speed) in patients with schizophrenia.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "SFN may have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Therefore, the dietary intake of SFN-rich broccoli sprouts during juvenile and adolescence may prevent the onset of psychosis in adulthood".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered a functional food for the promotion of cognitive deficit, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #NavyBean Inhibits Diseases Associated with Acute-#ColonicInflammation in Vivo, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural response by the immune system to protect the body against the invasion of stimuli or foreign pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a short-term condition caused by tissue injury, leading to pain, redness, swelling, and heat in the affected area. depending on the size of the injury. Some patients with acute inflammation may also experience the symptom of loss of function.

In acute inflammation, the white blood cells on the first line of defense of the immune system after sensing the danger of an infection in the body through a message from the brain stimulate the production of platelets to cover the site of injury or damage and inflammatory cytokines to kill off all pathogens before they can cause harm to the body.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, acute inflammatory progression cannot be stopped due to the inability of the immune system to destroy all invaders, which may lead to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Anti-inflammation is the process that inhibits inflammation or swelling without affecting the immune property to curb foreign pathogens.

Conventionally, the most common use of anti-inflammatory medicines is over counter aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, Nuprin), and other prescription NSAIDs.
Holistically, according to the Medical University Innsbruck, the top 5 anti-inflammatory foods are
* Garlic
Recent studies also showed that garlic exhibits anti-inflammatory effects against chronic inflammatory disease through phytochemical allicin and other mechanisms.

* Ginger
Strong evidence in Western studies suggested that ginger processes anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and immune-modulatory effects.

* Turmeric
Epidemiological studies also found the efficacy of turmeric for the treatment of diabetes, microbial infection gastrointestinal diseases, and irregular cell growth such as cancer through its anti-inflammatory antioxidant and immunomodulatory activities.

* Green tea
Epidemiological studies suggested that green tea consists of many pharmaceutical properties, including anti-cancer, anti-diabetes, anti-allergy, and anti-micro-organisms infection, through its antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune-modulatory activities.

* Shiitake mushrooms
Recent studies showed that Shiitake mushrooms process the properties of anti-cancer, anti-HIV, and hepatitis viruses, an enhanced immune system against inflammation.

The small, white navy bean, also called pea bean or haricot, popular in both dry and green forms, is very popular in Britain and the US, native to Peru. It is now grown and consumed across the world, due to its numerous health benefits.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for diseases associated with acute inflammation, researchers examined the enriched levels of nondigestible fermentable carbohydrates and phenolic compounds found in black and navy beans' immunomodulatory effects on the severity of colitis-associated inflammatory pathology.

In an animal model, C57Bl/6 mice were pre-fed isocaloric 20% cooked navy bean (NB) or black bean (BB) diets for 3 weeks and switched to control basal diet (BD) 24 h prior to colitis induction via 5-day exposure to dextran sodium sulfate (2% w/v in drinking water)+3 days of freshwater, researchers found that* The severity of the acute colitis phenotype associated with inflammation was inhibited by bean prefeeding, observed by reduced colon tissue inflammatory transcription factor activation such as NFκB, STAT3) and inflammatory mediator levels such as IL-1β, IL-6, IL-18, and MCP-1 compared to control.

* Black and navy beans also stimulated the biomarkers that enhance wound repair responses. including colon tissue protein levels of IL-22, And IL-27.

* Furthermore, the black and navy beans diet also increases the mRNA expressions of genes involved in the normal colonic epithelial function and the promotion of epithelial barrier integrity, defense and/or restitution, and wound closure in acute colonic inflammation.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded, " bean supplementation prior to colitis induction (i.e., mimicking disease relapse) primes the colonic microenvironment to attenuate the severity of the colitis inflammatory phenotype and maintain aspects of epithelial barrier function".

Taken altogether, the navy bean may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Tartaricacid Improves the Intestinal Absorption in Vitro and Vivo, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemicals, the natural chemical constituent, protect the plants against diseases and form their outer's color. Phytochemicals may be the next potential sources of new medicine for the treatment of diseases with little or no side effects.

Tartaric acid is a phytochemical of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, apricots, apples, sunflowers, avocados, grapes, etc.

The study of the effects of D-tartaric acid (TA) on intestinal drug absorption in the rat model, showed a significant increase of the intestinal absorption of P-glycoprotein (P-gp), a class of conjugated proteins. rhodamine 123 and daunorubicin.

Another study of starch preparations analyzed their resistance to enzymatic digestion in vitro with the presence of inorganic (hydrochloric) and organic (citric and tartaric) acids under controlled conditions. Tannic acid showed a significantly stronger influence on starch hydrolysis than citric acid.

#Healthyfood #Carrot Exerts Protective Effects Against Hypertension, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect on reduced risk and treatment of hypertension, some scientists suggested.
Hypertension is a common syndrome characterized by abnormally high blood pressure.

High blood pressure (HBP or hypertension) induced narrowing and blocking of blood vessels were associated with an increased risk of developing heart failure.

Truly, in hypertensive individuals, the heart must work harder to pump and circulate the blood to the entire body.

Prolonged and unchecked high blood pressure can increase the force of the blood pushing against the artery walls, leading to a substantial risk of heart attack and stroke.

Usually, high blood pressure has no signs or symptoms, if your blood pressure is persistently high, you must check with your family doctors for preventive pressure.

In some cases, medication may prescribe by your doctor, if your blood pressure is 160/100 or higher.

The exacted causes of high blood pressure are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that an unhealthy lifestyle and diet and physical inactivities are the major contributors to the onset of the syndrome.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a subspecies of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that increased fruit and vegetable intake daily and regularly is associated with lower blood pressure.

However, according to the searching of the medical literature databases, most studies were found to engage in short-term intervention.

Therefore, a long-term study with a large example size study to reaffirm the possibility is necessary.

In a prospective study to examine the independent association of whole fruit (excluding juices) and vegetable intake, as well as the change in consumption of whole fruits and vegetables, with incident hypertension in 3 sizeable longitudinal cohort studies: Nurses' Health Study (n=62 175), Nurses' Health Study II (n=88 475), and Health Professionals Follow-up Study (n=36 803) conducted by the joint investigation led by the Brigham and Women's Hospital and Harvard Medical School, researchers found that

* The risk of high blood pressure in compared participants who consumed ≤4 servings/week, and those whose intake ≥4 servings/day were 0.92 for total whole fruit intake and 0.95 for total vegetable intake.

Blood pressure of fruits intake participants displayed a much lower pooled hazard ratio, compared to the same volume of vegetables.

* In compared to participants who did not increase their fruit or vegetable consumption, the pooled hazard ratios for those whose intake increased by ≥7 servings/week were 0.94(0.90-0.97) for total whole fruit intake and 0.98(0.94-1.01) for a total vegetable.

Further differentiation of all fruits and vegetable intake by participants scientists surprisingly found that only consumption levels of ≥4 servings/week, in numbers of specific vegetables, were associated with lower hypertension risk compared to whole fruits.

Dr. Borgi L the lead author, after taking into account other confounders, said, " greater long-term intake and increased consumption of whole fruits may reduce the risk of developing hypertension".

These results indicated that only daily and regular and increased intake of fruits and certain vegetables may reduce the risk of hypertension in the longer-term.

In the investigation of the dried purple carrot effect in reduced risk of hypertension in obese individuals, researchers at The University of Queensland conducted a study containing 16 males (aged 53.1 ± 7.6 years with a mean BMI of 32.8 ± 4.6 kg/m(2)) with normal lipid and inflammatory markers.

Application of 118.5 mg/day of anthocyanins and 259.2 mg/day of phenolic acids for 4 weeks to participants showed a statistically insignificant change in hypertension.

However, sub-sequenced study with anthocyanins, phenolic acids, and carotenoids, the predominant phytochemicals isolated from purple carrots in hypertensive rats induced by a high-fat diet, researchers found

* Rat fed with high-fat diet developed an elevated hypertension

* Rat fed with a high-fat diet with an injection of whole-food purple carrot juice showed a significantly reduced blood pressure compared to the untreated group.

Compared to isolated phytochemicals researchers suggested that not all bioactive compounds exert a protective effect against the onset of hypertension, it is likely that the anthocyanins are responsible for the antioxidant activity in inhibited excessive reactive oxygen species (ROS) iN initiation and exacerbated hypertension.

The findings suggested that whole food carrot may be considered as functional food in reduced risk of hypertension if it is taken daily and regularly over a long term period.

Therefore, people who want to optimize their blood pressure level may want to add some portions of carrots to their diet.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits the #Oxidativestress that Causes #Glioma In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

A glioma is a type of tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or the spine.
Glioma cells can be classified into
* Astrocytomas are a type of brain cancer that originated in a particular kind of glial cells, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes.

* Ependymomas, are a type of cancer that grows in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back.

* Oligodendrogliomas are a type of glioma that starts in glial cells called oligodendrocytes.

Primary glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

In the US, the median age of glioblastoma diagnosed is 64 years and the incidence of the disease onset is 1.6 times higher in males compared to females.

Furthermore, the condition is 2 times higher in Caucasians compared to Africans and Afro-Americans.

Because of the rapid growth, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience sudden brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Conventionally, radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

The causes of glioblastoma are not identified. However, the increase in age and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors found in patients with the disease.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the inhibition of brain tumors researchers examined the combined active ingredients of Chinese (Helicteres angustifolia) and Indian (Withaniasomnifera) ginsengs effects on glial differentiation potentials.

Based on the tested analysis, the novel combination of Cuc and Wi-N, CucWi-N, showed a significant activity to protect the neuron cells against the oxidative stress-induced decrease in DNA damage.

In rat glioblastoma cells, CucWi-N exerted the glial differentiation potential and induced differentiation phenotype.

Proteins are associated with neuron growth and development and a key role in glial differentiation. such as GAP43, MAP2, and GFAP were exhibited by the injection of the combination.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These data demonstrate anti-stress and glial differentiation potential of CucWi-N (a novel combination of Cuc and Wi-N) that could be recruited in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical avenues and hence warrant further evaluation and mechanistic studies.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb that reduces the risk of brain tumors, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Antioxidant #Curcumin Found in Herbal Turmeric Decreaes the Levels of Hyperlipidemia, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is a chronic condition of abnormally high levels of any or all lipoproteins in the bloodstream, including cholesterol and triglycerides.

The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

Believe it or not, about half of the U.S. adults (55%, or 43 million) are currently taking medicine associated with lower blood cholesterol.

There are many risk factors that cause the onset of hyperlipidemia, such as people with diabetes, being overweight gain, physical activity, and smoking.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades may be one of the silent causes of hyperlipidemia in the Western world.

Dr. Charles Desmarchelier in the examined the risk of high blood cholesterol in a high-fat diet model said, "Mice on Western diet showed increased plasma cholesterol levels, associated with the higher dietary cholesterol supply, yet, significantly reduced cholesterol levels were found in intestine and liver".

And, "(The) intestine and liver react to a high dietary fat intake by activation of de novo cholesterol synthesis and other cholesterol-saving mechanisms, as well as with major changes in phospholipid metabolism, to accommodate to the fat load'.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of hyperlipidemia, researchers investigated the effects of curcumin on hyperlipidemia and hepatic steatosis in high-fructose-fed Wistar rats.

The study included 40 male Wistar rats divided into four groups with 10 rats in each. Two groups were fed with a standard rodent diet and the other two with a 60% high-fructose diet for 10 weeks. Curcumin (200 mg/kg body weight) was administered along with the diets simultaneously to each of the aforementioned diet groups.

After 10 weeks of the experiment, researchers found that curcumin decreased the levels of hyperlipidemia observed by reducing body weight, liver weight, adipose weight.

The plasma levels of triglyceride by inhibited the proteins associated with fat cell fat metabolism, lipid ratios and increased HDL-C (28.4 ± 4.5 mg/dL) in fructose-fed rats were also lower by the injection of curcumin.

Furthermore, curcumin also suppressed the lipogenic enzymes involved in regulating lipogenesis in fat cells.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed with a high amount of curcumin may be used for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
