#Cranberry Extract Gobbless up the #NasopharyngealCancer Cell in Vitro, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

The nasopharynx is an upper part of the pharynx, connecting the nasal cavity above the soft palate with a primary function that allows us to breathe through the nose.

Nasopharyngeal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the nasopharynx.

Most cases of nasopharyngeal cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the nasopharyngeal tissue before penetrating into deeper layers to form a tumor through cell cycle division.

A recent joint study led by the Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University Dental College & Hospital suggested that cranberry extract may be potent to inhibit oral cancer.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

According to the TNM system, nasopharyngeal cancer can be classified into stages depending on the size and location of the tumor.
* TX is the stage that the primary tumor cannot be found.

* T0 is the stage that the primary tumor cannot be measured.

* T1 is the stage that the tumor has not spread beyond the nasopharynx.

* T2 is the stage that the tumor extends into the soft tissue of the middle throat.

* T3 is the stage that the tumor has extended into the bone structure or into the area behind the nose.

* T4 is the advanced stage nasopharyngeal cancer in which the tumor has spread to other parts of the body.

The study included 3 dose-related parameters GI50, TGI, and LC50 of cranberry extract used in a number of oral cancer cell lines compared to Chlorhexidine (CHX).

In KB (Nasopharyngeal carcinoma), the application of CE at a dose of 80µg/ml demonstrated a 70.6% growth inhibition.

However, at the same dose, CE showed no anti-cancer property against AW13516 cell line, a poorly to moderately differentiated squamous cell carcinoma of the tongue.

Compared to CE, CHX demonstrated 80.15% & 95.7% of growth inhibition against AW13516 & KB cell line respectively.

Furthermore, compared to the drug Adriamycin, both CE and CHX were less potency reflected by their GI50, TGI, and LC50 values.

In other words, cranberry extracts exerted efficacy against nasopharyngeal cancer, similarly to those of chemo drugs.

Based on the results, researchers said, "CHX exhibited better anti-cancer properties than CE for both the oral cancer cell lines (AW13516 and KG) cell line ".

Taken altogether, cranberry extract may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of nasopharyngeal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Lycopene Inhibits the Gastric Ulcer Risk in Vivo, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow, and important organ of the digestive tract.
The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Gastric or stomach ulcer is a condition of localized tissue erosion in the lining of the stomach.

The most common symptoms of gastric ulcers are abdominal pain, bloating, septic shock, dyspepsia, blood in the stool due to bleeding, unintended weight loss and loss of appetite, and gastrointestinal discomforts.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of mood disorder, leading to reduced quality of life in many patients.

The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa is the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medications, including aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis.

Epidemiologically, periodontal disease, aging, smoking, long-term use of mechanical ventilation, and critical illness are at an increased risk of gastric ulcer.

Dr. Haruka Fujinami lead scientist in the examination of long-term intake of conventional medicine in the risk of gastric ulcer wrote, "The rates of Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection were significantly low (P = 0.039), while the proportion of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) users and vascular disease significantly increased over the period studied (P = 0.034 and P = 0.04, respectively)".

And, "It’s found that the primary cause of peptic ulcer bleeding changed from H. pylori infection to use of NSAIDs over the 7-year period of study. It seems that the number of low-dose aspirin users has increased with the increase in the proportion of vascular disease".

The results strongly suggested if you are a long-term user of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, your risk of gastric ulcer is significantly higher.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of ulcers, researchers examined the protective effects of lycopene on an indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer model.

The study included a total of 42 adult male Wistar rats induced by gastric ulcer divided into six groups of seven animals as follows: control, indomethacin, lansoprazole, lycopene 10 mg/kg, lycopene 50 mg/kg and lycopene 100 mg/kg.

According to the tested analysis, the % Tail DNA and Mean Tail Moment in the gastric ulcer group were significantly decreased by the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg, compared to other treatment groups.

Furthermore, the treatment of lycopene at the dose of 100 mg/kg not only decreased the increased levels of malondialdehyde and myeloperoxidase in the gastric ulcer group but also increased the antioxidant enzymes in the gastric tissue without affecting the levels of catalase.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene might have a protective effect against indomethacin-induced gastric ulcer and oxidative stress in rats".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of gastric ulcers, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant Emodin Found in #Herbal #Aloevera Reduces the Risk of #LungCancer, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of diseases, including wounds, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

Lung cancer is defined as a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the Us, Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths, causing 158,683 people deaths, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women, according to 2007 statistics.

Aloe-emodin has been studied extensively through our scientific community for its effects against cancer including the study of induced apoptosis in lung carcinoma cell lines CH27 (human lung squamous carcinoma cell) by breaking of DNA strands (DNA ladders and sub-G(1) formation) and regulating of the expression of Bcl-2 family proteins (a suppressor of apoptosis). In the study of the effects of aloe-emodin-induced cell death in the human lung non-small cell carcinoma cell line H460, aloe-emodin was involved regulating apoptotic cell death through the class of mitogen-activated protein kinases(p38). These results suggested that aloe-emodin found in ALOE VERA may be a potential agent for preventing and treating lung cancer.

#Herbal #Andrographis Exhibits a Neuroprotective Activity Against the #NeurologicalDiseases, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

The good news for aging people with neurodegenerative diseases, Andrographis paniculata possesses potent anti-inflammatory activity in the expression of neurodegeneration a study by a renowned institute suggested.

Andrographis paniculata, also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,......

Andrographolide, a major phytochemical isolated from Andrographis paniculata, exerted significant anti-neuro deficits in reduced infarct volume with a maximum reduction of approximately 50% at a dose of 0.1 mg·kg(-1).

According to the National University of Singapore, the efficacy of the chemical compound in neuroprotective effects is the result of the suppression of NF-κB, a protein in regulated cell survival and function of microglia in the activated response to brain injuries and immunological stimuli together with the reduction in the production of inflammatory cytokines.

Dr. Chan SJ, the lead researcher said, "Andrographolide, given i.p. 1 h after pMCAO, reduced infarct volume with a maximum reduction of approximately 50% obtained at 0.1 mg·kg(-1)".

Octodon degus (degu) is the only wild-type South American rodent that develops Alzheimer's-like pathology with age. the progression of AD in these animals is associated with aging on the loss of cognitive function, causing a decrease in the synaptic functions and an increase in the main hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Natural product (Andrographolide, ANDRO), administered to aged degus (56-month old) for 3 months, in compared 2 control groups (young degus: 12-month old and aged degus: 56-month old), showed a recovery of spatial memory and learning performance, synaptic basal transmission; and enhancing the neuroprotective effect, through reduced phosphorylated tau protein and reduced amyloid beta aggregate maturation in involving neurodegeneration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) in Andrographolide, ANDRO treated subjects.

Taking together, Andrographis could be used as a functional food in potential therapy for AD-associated neural damage due to aging processes and neuropathological hallmarks of aging-related diseases such as AD.

#Healthyfood #Onion In the Promotion of the Immune Fucntioning, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system formed part of the defense system is the set of cells associated with the activity that protects the body against antigens or infectious agents.
It is one of the body's defense systems against diseases by keeping us healthy and preventing infections.

Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.

Immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with an underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.

* The overactive immune system is also known as an autoimmune disease. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.

Immunomodulation is a process in which an immune response is altered to the desired level. In other words, under the immunomodulatory effect, the immune system is responding correctly to the desire of the body, regardless of the type of immune dysfunction.

Some researchers suggested that providing the necessary nutrition which has been found to play major exogenous factor in modulating different aspects of immune function. Therefore, the immune system can be optimal for the benefit of human health.

Dr. the lead scientist outlined,
* "Nutrition induces a significant modulation of a marker within the reference range" or

* "Nutrition induces a significant modulation of a marker from outside the reference or control range back into the range" or

*"Nutrition induces a significant modulation of a marker from within the reference or control range to outside the range" or

* "Nutrition prevents a significant modulation of a marker from within the reference or control range to outside the range" or
* "Nutrition induces a significant modulation of a marker from a less favorable reference range into the reference range of a comparator group with a more favorable immune function".

Finally, the doctor said, "If related immune function markers show consistent changes, the interpretation will be easy and will follow the same logic as for individual markers" and "If changes in related markers are not consistent, interpretation is greatly helped by good clinical practices that include the a priori definition of the most important ‘lead markers’ (typically groups A and B)".

In other words, immune functioning can be modulated to the body's needs.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

With an aim to find a potential compound that processes the immunomodulatory effect, researchers examined the onion extract against diseases associated with immune dysfunction.

In vitro, the application of both onion aqueous and ethanolic extract of garlic powder significantly stimulated cell proliferation of rat spleen lymphocytes, by activating a cytokine signaling molecule in the immune system that regulates the activities of white blood cells.

These activities were totally dependent on the specific stimulators of cell proliferation. In this case, it was the interleukin 2 (IL2).

In subjects treated with concanavalin, both extracts also modulated the proliferation of rat thymocytes and splenocytes in response to concanavalin administration.

Interestingly, depending on the concentration, onion extracts not only had an inhibitory effect on T cell proliferation at higher concentrations but also increased T cell proliferation at lower concentrations of extracts.

In other words, onion processed immune-modulatory effects depending on the body's needs.

Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the promotion of immune function, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Bromelain Kills #Cholangiocarcinoma Cells in Vitro, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cholangiocarcinoma, also known as bile duct cancer, is a medical condition that originated from irregular cell growth in the bile ducts.
Most cases of cholangiocarcinoma are caused by the alternation of cell DNA in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the bile duct.

At the advanced stage, cancer cells in the bile duct may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs through the circulation of blood and fluids.

Primary bile duct cancer has been found to spread to the regional lymph nodes and adjacent organs.

According to statistics, cholangiocarcinoma is rare cancer that occurred approximately 2500 Americans each year compared to 5000 cases of gallbladder cancer and 15,000 cases of hepatocellular cancer.

Believe it or not, the 5-year survival rate diagnosed with early-stage extrahepatic bile duct cancer is only 30%. If cancer has spread to the regional lymph nodes, the 5-year survival rate is 24%.

The most common type of cholangiocarcinoma found in the bile duct is perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, followed by the distal extra-hepatic and then the intrahepatic forms.

Epidemiologically parasitic infections, primary sclerosing cholangitis, biliary-duct cysts, hepatolithiasis, and toxins are some prevalent factors that cause the onset of cholangiocarcinoma.

Dr. Gia L. Tyson, the lead scientist wrote, "Cholangiocarcinoma is the second most common primary hepatic malignancy after hepatocellular cancer. It accounts for approximately 10–25% of all hepatobiliary malignancies".

And, "Other less-established, potential risk factors include inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, cirrhosis, diabetes, obesity, alcohol drinking, tobacco smoking, and host genetic polymorphisms".

However, most people with some of the above risk factors do not develop cholangiocarcinoma.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against Cholangiocarcinoma (CC), researchers investigated the anticancer effect of bromelain and papain in intra- and extrahepatic human CC cell lines.

According to the medical assays, bromelain and papain showed a similar effect inhibition of human CC cell growth, migration, and invasion.

Furthermore, according to cell proliferative assays, bromelain, and papain resulted in a decrease in the proliferation, invasion, and migration of CC cells.

Bromelain and papain-induced CC death by inhibiting protein-associated anti-apoptotic signaling as well as their downstream signaling proteins associated with CC proliferation.

Interestingly, compared to papain, bromelain showed an overall more effective inhibition of CC.

In additional differentiation of the anti-cancer activity, researchers found that bromelain and papain have cytotoxic effects on human CC cells.

Based on the findings, Dr. Müller A the lead scientist said, "Bromelain and papain have cytotoxic effects on human CC cell lines, and bromelain and partially papain in comparison impair tumor growth by NFκB/AMPK signaling".

And, " Especially bromelain can evolve as a promising, potential therapeutic option that might open new insights for the treatment of human CC".

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of cholangiocarcinoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Fennel Exerts #Antibiotic-Life Effects, With No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Fennel may be the next natural antibiotic used for the treatment of diseases caused by bacterial infection with no side effects, some researchers suggested.
Although most micro bacteria are harmless, some are pathogenic.

The most common bacterial pathogens that cause human diseases are Staphylococcus aureus and group A β-hemolytic streptococci.

According to statistics provided by the World Health Organization, approximately, 50,000 men, women, and children are dying from infectious diseases every day worldwide.

Some researchers suggested that over the span of decades or centuries, the epidemiological transition provides the central narrative of global health, including a reduction in mortality and the creation of larger and older populations in which the main causes of illness are chronic infectious diseases.

Although in comparison to the third world, the prevalence of infectious diseases in the UK has reduced dramatically over the last century, the rate of infectious diseases caused by pathogen still has a strong and negative impact on major health, social and economic issues.
Each year in the UK, infectious diseases were found to cause 576 of days lost due to disability, out of 1000 population, according to statistics reported by Somerset Intelligence.

The most common symptoms of infectious diseases include fever, diarrhea, fatigue, tiredness, muscle aches,..... coughing. However, signs and symptoms may vary, depending on the pathogen, causing the infection.

Fennel is a species of Foeniculum Vulgare, belonging to the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the shores of the Mediterranean. It is now widely cultivated all around the globe to use as food and herb.

In the study to examine 3 different essential oils from grown cultivars of Egyptian fennel, researchers found that according to chromatography/mass spectrometry analysis, all chemical compounds isolated from 3 essential oil processing a strong antioxidant activity in inhibited pathogenic bacteria including two species of fungi, two species of Gram-negative and two species of Gram-positive bacteria.

Further analysis also suggested that the efficacy of compounds isolated from essential oil from 3 species of fennel was attributed to its free radical scavenging, anti-lipid peroxidation, and metal chelating properties.

Additionally, in the observation of essential oil's antioxidant activity from Foeniculum vulgare commercial aerial parts and fruits isolated by hydrodistillation, researchers at the Universidade do Algarve conducted an experiment, using different distillation times (30 min, 1 h, 2 h, and 3 h), and analyzed by GC and GC-MS in isolated chemical compounds from obtained fennel essential oil.

According to the analysis of the agar diffusion method. trans-Anethole (31-36%), alpha-pinene (14-20%) and limonene (11-13%), the main components of the essentials oil isolated from F. vulgare dried aerial parts and exerted a significant antibacterial activity compared to methyl chavicol (= estragole) (79-88%) dominant in the fruit oils.

In the DPPH method, according to the measurement of oxidative stress, plant essential oils showed better antioxidant activity compared to fruit oils.

Dr, Miguel MG, the lead author wrote at the end of the experimental report, "None of the oils showed a hydroxyl radical scavenging capacity > 50%, but they showed an ability to inhibit 5-lipoxygenase. The essential oils showed very low antimicrobial activity. In general, the essential oils isolated during 2 h were as effective, from the biological activity point of view, as those isolated during 3 h".

These results suggested that the effect of chemical compounds in inhibited pathogenic bacteria is isolated time dependable. Only those isolated less than 2 hours are processed strong antibacterial capability.
