#Healthyfood #Garlic Modulates #Testosterone Levels Depending on the Body Needs, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating the common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure, cholesterol, natural antibiotic, etc.

Garlic may be the next generation of natural testosterone reducers or inducers? A high level of testosterone may alter the balance between ROS production and antioxidant defenses that induce testicular antioxidants and free radicals, including glutathione (GSH), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), and ameliorate the reduction in testosterone levels.

Dr. Prasad S led the research at the Industrial Toxicology Research Centre, diallyl sulfide (DAS), a constituent of garlic, exerted antioxidant activities against testosterone-induced oxidative stress in male Swiss albino mice, by significantly restoring the testosterone-induced antioxidant enzymes and lipid peroxidation.

The effects of garlic supplementation on protein metabolism also suggested that dietary supplementation with 0.8 g/100 g garlic alters hormones associated with protein anabolism by increasing testicular testosterone and decreasing plasma corticosterone in rats fed a high-protein diet.

Overproduction of testosterone may associate with an increase in the risk of prostate cancer, caused by an imbalance of free radicals and antioxidants.

According to the Tunis El Manar University, the intake of garlic impacted the male reproductive system by the increased number of tubules deprived of spermatozoa. In addition, garlic fractions induced apoptosis of testicular gem cells.

In fact, like all-natural phytochemicals, garlic is both a testosterone booster and testosterone reducer, depending on the levels of testosterone in the body and the amount of garlic intake.

Conflicting results have been found between total testosterone and subsequent prostate cancer, probably due to conflicting study designs, definitions, and methodologies. Therefore, the use of garlic in increasing sexual desire should be taken with care.

#Healthyfood #Beet Inhibits the Risk of #BladderCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake of functional food beetroot regularly not only lowers the early occurrence but also provides a natural treatment of bladder cancer without inducing adverse effects.

Bladder cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth and multiplied disorderly and uncontrollably in bladder tissues.

Beet, best known as the beetroot or garden beet and belonging to the amaranth family, is a perennial plant with leafy stems growing to 1–2 m tall.

According to the University of Urbino 'Carlo Bo', betaxanthins and betacyanins, isolated from beetroot exerted a significant anti-cancer effect in testing bladder cancer cell lines, through the expression of antioxidant and pro-apoptotic activities.

The anti-cancer property of beetroot also displayed a strong anti-angiogenesis by blocking the cancer cell in established new blood vessel signaling.

When used in combination with Vitexin-2-O-xyloside, an apigenin flavone glucoside, betaxanthins, and betacyanins also exerted a strong antiproliferative activity in bladder cancer cell lines, intrinsically and extrinsically in the expression of apoptosis.

The study also indicated that this combination when used conjunction in with conventional chemotherapy not only enhanced the effectiveness of treatment in bladder cancer but also overcome the adverse effect of toxicity and multidrug resistance of cancer cells.

Furthermore, in another study conducted by the same university, Betacyanins (BC) purified from beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. rubra L.) tested, alone or in combination with vitexin-2-O-xyloside (XVX) also isolated from the same vegetable enhanced the ability to reduce the proliferation rate in T24 bladder cancer cells, synergistically by inhibition of protein of gene in promoted cell survival and enhanced cancer apoptosis.

Taken together, a diet enriched with these bioactive molecules of beetroot could be used as a functional food in the prevention and treatment of human bladder cancer.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits Human Papillomavirus and Squamous Carcinoma Cells In Vitros, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of chronic diseases associated with cell growth disorderly in the tissue of some specific organ. Depending on the grade and stage, most cases of cancer in the advanced stage have been found to induce a higher mortality rate compared to cancer diagnosed in the localized stage.

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers that starts in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Squamous cell carcinoma is cancer arising from the squamous cells found in the outer layer of skin and in the mucous membranes, which are the moist tissues that line body cavities.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) develops in the mucous membranes of the mouth, nose, and throat.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) epidemiologically ahs have been found to spread to the lymph nodes or lungs. More than 90% of the head and neck cancer diagnosed are squamous carcinomas.

Symptoms of head and neck cancer may include a lump or sore that does not heal, a sore throat that does not go away, trouble swallowing, or a change in voice.

According to the statistics provided by the Western General Hospital, squamous cell cancer of the head and neck is common worldwide accounting for 4% of all cancers in the United States and 5% in the United Kingdom.

The exact causes of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are unknown. However, geographically, smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol, and long-term poor diet are essential risk factors in the West compared to risk factors of chewing betel or areca nuts, smoking bidis, and taking snuff are essential in the Indian subcontinent.

More importantly, the genetic preposition of genome 9p21, which may indicate the loss of a gene that suppresses tumors accounts for a total of 70% of all cases.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In finding a potential ingredient for the treatment of head and neck cancer, researchers examined the effect of curcumin on head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) using a panel of cell lines with and without human papillomavirus (HPV+, HPV-).

According to the tested differentiation, curcumin treatment of HNSCC cell lines not only interfered with RNA of Skp2, which causes cancer tumorigenesis and radiation tolerance but also induced concomitant accumulation of p21 and p27 associated with a cells cycle arrest in HPV+, HPV- cells.

Furthermore, curcumin inhibits cell viability and induces apoptosis in a dose-dependent manner in the tested cell line with and without human papillomavirus (HPV+, HPV-).

Moreover, curcumin treatment of HPV+ and HPV- cells resulted in apoptosis via the mitochondrial pathway of apoptosis and activation of caspases that play a critical role in programmed cell death.

Additionally, the inhibition of HPV+ and HPV- cells by curcumin was also found to suppress the expression of poor prognostic markers such as XIAP, and cancer survival such as cIAP1, and cIAP2.

More importantly, co-treatment of HNSCC cells with curcumin and cisplatin potentiated inhibition of cell viability and apoptotic effects.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "These data suggest an important function for curcumin, acting as a suppressor of oncoprotein Skp2 in squamous cell carcinoma cells in both HPV+ and HPV- cells".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of HNSCC, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Broccoli Processes Anti-Depression Activities, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a common and serious psychological illness, that affects the physical and mental functions of patients, including the patient's feelings, thinking, and actions.

Some patients with depression may feel sadness and/or a loss of interest in activities once enjoyed.

There is no exact cause of depression. Changes in hormone levels, medical conditions, stress, grief, or difficult life circumstances that initiate the change of brain chemistry in inducing depressive syndrome are some of the most prevalent factors found in patients with depression.

The most common symptoms of depression include sadness, hopelessness, guilt, change of mood, and loss of interest in friends, family, favorite activities, and sex.

In severe case, some patients with depression also experience cognitive symptoms of trouble concentrating, making decisions, remembering and thoughts of harming his or herself.

According to the statistics provided by the Anxiety and Depression Association of Americans, major depressive disorder is the leading cause of disability in the U.S. for ages 15 to 44.3, affecting more than 16.1 million American adults, or about 6.7% of the U.S. population age 18 and older.

Conventionally, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the primary medication for the treatment of depression due to its relatively lower side effects compared to depressants. Other types of antidepression medication may include serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs), typical antidepressants, and monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs).

Dr. Steven S. Clevenger and colleagues in examining the role of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors in the relapse risk of major depressive disorder wrote, "According to the included studies, the relapse risk in adults was lower when SSRIs were combined with psychotherapy".

And, " the combination of SSRIs and cognitive behavioral therapy may effectively reduce relapse. Escitalopram appeared to yield better results and fewer side effects than did other SSRIs or SNRIs".
On finding a potent compound that process depressant-like activity, researchers examined the effects of Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate compound derived from broccoli on inflammation-related depressive symptoms.

On lipopolysaccharide, (LPS, 0.5 mg/kg) induced depression-like behavior in mice, pretreatment SFN showed a significant effect in the blockage of the increase in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokine (tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α)) level and an increase in microglial activation of the brain associated with the inflammatory response by increasing the expression anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10.

Activation of microglia is a hallmark of brain diseases.

In the tail suspension test and forced swimming test, immotility caused by the LPS of the tested mice was also attenuated by the injection of SFN.

Degeneration of cognition in the brain caused by the alternation of the density of the proteins associated with the brain functioning due to the LPS was also restored by the SFN.

More importantly, dietary intake of 0.1% glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) food in juveniles and adolescents has been found to prevent the risk of LPS-induced depression-like behaviors and dendritic spine changes in the brain regions in adulthood.

In other words, SFN isolated from the rich broccoli sprout exhibited depressant-like activity that was attributed to the anti-inflammatory property.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Supplementation of SFN-rich broccoli sprout could be a prophylactic vegetable to prevent or minimize the relapse by inflammation in the remission state of depressed patients".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts rich in SFN may be considered a functional food for the treatment of depression, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthyfood #Lentil's #Lectins improve the #ImmuneFunctioning, Scientists Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Lentil may have a profound and positive effect in modulating the immune response in the acute phase of infection, some scientists suggested.

Lentil is a type of pulse and tiny legume that can be cooked quickly and is rich in protein and fiber, belongings the genus Lens of the Fabaceae family, native to the Middle East.

The immune response is a natural reaction of the immune system to protect our body against the invasion of foreign substances.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system initiated the production of proinflammatory Th1 cytokines in activated interleukin-12 (IL-12) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and other pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF beta in response to detect, engulf and destroy pathogens and apoptotic cells through macrophages.

These activities played an important in inducing apoptosis and reducing proliferation of bacteria or viruses by attaching to the surface of the injured cells to initiation of an alternation. however, overproduction of pro-inflammatory expression may indeed cause substantial adverse effects in tissue destruction, and, in some cases, shock and death.

Type 1 T helper (Th1) in response to tissue damage and injury also activated macrophages that are responsible for cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent protective activity.

In the concerns of lectins, adverse effects may pose a potential threat to consumers due to their capacity to induce histamine release from basophils, after investigating over 16 common dietary products containing lectins researchers found that most plant lectins induce human basophils to produce interleukin 4 (IL-4) an anti-inflammatory cytokine, which plays an important role in stimulated secretion of T cells and IL-13 another cytokines works conjunction with IL-4 in promoted the expression of T helper 2 (Th2) responses and regulation of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) synthesis.

All these expressed a significant effect of dietary lectin in reduced overexpression of pro-inflammatory factors in the immune system during the acute phase of infection in induced further cell damage and death in the infectious site through secretion of anti-inflammatory cytokines without decreasing the immune protective activities.

Truly, further examination also found that concanavalin A, lentil lectin, phytohemagglutinin, , triggered basophils to release IL-4 at concentrations of up to 1 ng/10(6) basophils which in turn orchestrated the release of IL-13 and histamine and levels of IL-4 and IL-13 release reached a maximum after 4-6 h and more than 18 h, after injection, respectively.

These activities demonstrated a significant effect of lentil lectin in inducing early IL-4 required to switch the immune response towards a Th2 response and type I allergy, involving immunoglobulin E (IgE)–mediated release of histamine and other mediators from mast cells and basophils.

Indeed, the relative balance between Th1 and Th2 cytokines appears crucial, as Th1 cells activated immune response during the early stage of bodily injury or damage through evoking cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent inflammation, in stimulated production of several pro-inflammatory cytokines such as interferon (IFN)-gamma, interleukin (IL)-2 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-beta which may also cause damage to the cell of the infectious region, leading to permanently additional damage to the tissues and Th2, under response to overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines stimulated the production of IL-4, IL-5, IL-6, IL-9, IL-10, and IL-13 of anti-inflammatory cytokines in evoked strong antibody responses (including those of the IgE class) and eosinophil accumulation, and inhibited several functions of phagocytic cells as indicated above.

Taken together, Lentil lectin may have an anti-inflammatory effect in reducing the overexpression of pro-inflammatory factors in the initiation of symptoms of fever, headache, swelling, redness, loss of appetite, and muscle stiffness through activating the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

#Herbal #AloeVera Protects the Neurons Against the Onset of #NeurologicalDiseases, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

A study from a renowned institute suggested that Aloe arborescens may be a potential neuroprotective agent against copper-induced neurobehavioral features of Parkinson's disease.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wounds, burn to heal, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated of cholesterol, etc.

According to the joint study led by the Cadi Ayyad University, Neurosciences, Pharmacology, and Environment Unit, Aloe Vera expressed altered dopaminergic innervations associated with neurological disorders, Parkinson's disease following Cu intoxication.

Dr. Abbaoui A, the lead researcher said, " (Aloe arborescens gel )AEAAG administration to Cu intoxicated rats showed a noticeable beneficial effect; this potential was featured by a complete recovery of the (tyrosine hydroxylase)TH expression (in the regulation of dopamine Synthesis)
and locomotor behavior deficiencies in the intoxicated rats".

Aloe-emodin, an active compound found in Aloe Vera leaf, also exhibited neuroprotective effects by attenuated scopolamine(a medication used to treat motion sickness and postoperative nausea and vomiting)-induced cognitive deficits via inhibiting acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity involved breaking down of neurotransmitter and modulating oxidative stress.

The study also insisted the antioxidant activities inhibited significantly extracellular intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production to prevent cytotoxicity in patients with Alzheimer's disease(AD).

In fact, The neuroprotective expression of Aloe Vera polysaccharide is found to downregulate(caspase-3 expression) the process of apoptotic cell death in the brain during injury.

Taking together, Aloe Vera exerted a neuroprotective effect in reducing the risk of dementia through many aspects, including free radical inhibition, anti-cytotoxicity, and chemical toxicity..... but human trials are necessary to confirm its validity.

#Antioxidant 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Inhibits the Onset of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Colorectal cancer is a medical and chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon or rectum.
Colorectal cancer is one of the slowest growth of cancer. Therefore, Most cases of colorectal cancer are discovered in the later stage, causing a high rate of mortality.

According to the study, at the advanced stage, the median survival of patients is 24 months (range 16–42). The one-year and 2-year survival rate is 65% and 25%, respectively.
Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum. At the early stage, due to the small size of the tumor, most patients are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, the oversize tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to persistently severe bleeding and pain.

Patients at this stage may also experience symptoms of a change in bowel habits, including diarrhea or constipation or consistency of the stool, that lasts longer than four weeks.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor immediately to rule out the possibility.

The exact causes of colorectal cancer are not identified. Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, aging may be one of the major causes, as most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in adults over the age of 50, and the risk increases with age.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, kale, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential and natural compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer examined the diindolylmethane (DIM) effect on cyclin D1, which was aberrantly overexpressed in various cancer cells and tumors.

Where Cyclin D1 is a protein associated with the progression of cancer through the G1 phase of the cell cycle in cellular division.

Injection of DIM interfered the Cyclin D1 function in the promotion of colorectal cancer proliferation, without affecting the cyclin D1 mRNA expression.

The results suggested that DIM modulated cyclin D1 expression by controlling the levels of protein synthesized from its mRNA.

In other words, DIM inhibited cyclin D1 by triggering ER stress in human colorectal cancer cells through decreasing protein synthesis and growth arrest in the G1 phase of the cell cycle.

Additionally, in order to reveal more information about DIM anti-colorectal cancer properties, researchers investigated the effect of DIM on the migratory and invasive activities of the human colorectal cancer cell lines DLD-1 and HCT116.

Injection of DIM significantly inhibited the migratory ability of the DLD-1 and HCT116 cells at 24 and 48 hours.

DIM also significantly inhibited the invasion rate of the DLD-1 and HCT116 cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Following DIM treatment, researchers found that DIM anti-colorectal cancer property was associated with attenuating the mRNA expression levels of urokinase receptor and matrix metalloprotease 9 (MMP9) involved cancer cell adhesion and enhancing the expression of tumor-suppressive mRNA.

Furthermore, DIM significantly reduced the mRNA and protein levels of FOXM1 in the promotion of cell division or proliferation in DLD-1 and HCT116 cells.

Based on these results, Dr.Jin H, the lead scientist in the summary of the report, wrote, "DIM can influence the cell migratory and invasive properties of human colorectal cancer cells and may decrease the invasive capacity of colorectal cancer through downregulation of uPA and MMP9 mediated by suppression of the transcription factor FOXM1".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
