#Herbal #Turmeric Protects the Heart Muscles Against the Onset of HeartDiseases and Strokes, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiomyocyte hypertrophy is a medical condition characterized by the thickening of the heart muscle, leading to reduced function of the heart in pumping blood throughout the body.

The heart-formed part of the circulatory system is a muscular organ that pumps blood through the body's blood vessels to provide oxygen and nutrients and remove metabolic wastes.
The heart muscles made up the bulk of the heart’s mass control the heartbeat with high contractile strength and endurance.

Cardiac muscle also has a unique function to regulate heart performance by spreading electrochemical signals to all cells in the heart.

Damage of the heart muscle has been found to induce blood vessel diseases, such as coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias).

In some cases, heart muscle disease also is found in patients with congenital heart defects.

The most common symptoms of cardiac hypertrophy are breathlessness with exertion or at rest, legs, ankles, and feet swelling. persistent fatigue, dizziness, lightheadedness, and fainting, particularly, in the symptoms of irregular heartbeats.

Conventionally, treatments of cardiac hypertrophy are totally depending on the type of heart disease, including lowering blood pressure medication such as ACE inhibitors; lowing the heart rate, such as beta-blockers, normalizing heart beating, and balancing electrolytes in the body.

Making a healthy lifestyle change and moderate exercise may also recommend by your doctor.

Cardiac hypertrophy has been found in patients with uncontrol high blood pressure accompanied by tobacco smoking. The condition is a common risk factor for heart attack and stroke.

Dr. Thomas Kahan, the lead scientist wrote, "Myocardial hypertrophy is also part of the remodeling process following an acute myocardial infarction, and is a common finding in patients with congestive heart failure caused by systolic and/or diastolic LV dysfunction".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of heart failure, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin an anti-hypertrophic potential.

According to the tested analysis, curcumin encapsulated by carboxymethyl chitosan (CMC) nanoparticle conjugated to a myocyte specific homing peptide was effective in the regression of cardiac hypertrophy in a rat (Rattus norvegicus) model.

Curcumin at a low dose of 5 mg/kg body weight compared to free Curcumin at 35 mg/kg body weight. showed a higher cardiac bioavailability, compared to other concentrations.

Furthermore, cardiac function during hypertrophy was significantly improved by the application of Curcumin/CMC-peptide by inhibiting the hypertrophy marker genes (ANF, β-MHC) and apoptotic mediators (Bax, Cytochrome-c) and activity of apoptotic markers (Caspase 3 and PARP) in the lower doses compared to higher doses.

Targeted Curcumin treatment significantly lowered p53 expression which is associated with pro-apoptotic function in cardiac hypertrophy.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Curcumin and also attributes towards probable mechanistic insight into its therapeutic potential as a cardio-protective agent for regression of cardiac hypertrophy".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiac hypertrophy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Ashwagandha Promotes The Healthy Neuron Activity and Brain Functioning by Inhibiting the #Overexpression #OxidativeStress, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organ made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.
The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses and many specialized regions.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites, and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmitting information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

* The motor neurons transmit information from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Believe it or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease, and stroke.

The top 3 neurological diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, associated with the worsening of memory, thinking, and behavior that severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies, or social life

* Bell's Palsy is a condition caused by sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side of the face.

* Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder of children affecting a child's movement, motor skills, and muscle tone.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In finding a potent compound for the treatment of brain health, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha (WA) extracts (alcoholic and water) and their bioactive components for neuroprotective activities against oxidative stress in cultured glioblastoma and neuroblastoma cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extracts and one of the purified components at a low dose protected the glial and neuronal cells from oxidation, an important activity that promotes neuron activity.

Furthermore, glutamate insult induced by oxidative stress was also inhibited by the application of Ashwagandha (WA) extracts (alcoholic and water) and their bioactive components.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the combinations of extracts and active component were highly potent endorsing the therapeutic merit of the combinational approach".

And, "Ashwagandha leaf-derived bioactive compounds have neuroprotective potential and may serve as a supplement for brain health.s".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the promotion of brain functioning, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

#Antioxidant #Alliin Inhibits the Onset of Hypertension, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Hypertension, found in the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.

Blood pressure change constantly depending on the activity. Persistent hypertension over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

It also is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., approximately 103 million U.S. adults are living with high blood pressure, accounting for nearly half of all adults in the United States.

Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications has caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.

Epidemiologically, family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and people with chronic kidney disease are some common risk factors involved in the increased risk of hypertension.

Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.

Dr. Kazim Husain wrote, "Several possible mechanisms have been proposed such as an imbalance of the central nervous system, impairment of the baroreceptors, enhanced sympathetic activity, stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, increased cortisol levels, increased vascular reactivity due to increasing in intracellular calcium levels, stimulation of the endothelium to release vasoconstrictors and loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production".

And, "Loss of relaxation due to inflammation and oxidative injury of the endothelium by angiotensin II leading to inhibition of endothelium-dependent nitric oxide production is the major contributor to alcohol-induced hypertension".

In fact, by making changes to lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide, a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belongings to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of hypertension, researchers examined the effect of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6% allicin) in rats fed with a high cholesterol diet.

The study was carried out with rats fed a 2% high cholesterol diet with and without garlic powder and control rats were fed a normal diet for 6 weeks daily.

Rats treated with a high-cholesterol diet had significantly higher blood pressure compared to the animals receiving the control diet.

Compared to the high cholesterol and control diet group, the blood pressure of the animals receiving garlic powder was significantly lower without changing the levels of serum glucose and protein in all of the rats.

The results strongly showed support for the use of Lichtwer garlic powder (containing 1.3% alliin equivalent to 0.6 % allicin) for the treatment of systolic blood pressure in hypercholesterolemic in an animal model.

Dr. Ali M the lead scientist said, "Our experimental results show that garlic may beneficially affect .....hypertension".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Alliin in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Anise in the Promotion of #WomensHealth, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in promoting women's health in all aspects, some scientists suggested.
Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

In the study of Anise estrogenic activity at doses levels of 50 mg, 70 mg, and 80 mg/kg PO. in rats, researchers found that application of Anise at all doses exerted a strong estrogenic effect without affecting the levels of progestational, anti-progestational, androgenic or anti-androgenic activities and inducing any side effects even at the doses of more than 3000 mg/kg with LD50, an indication of 50% percent of a population of animals killed usually within a certain time due to some application in a dose-dependent manner.

Also, in the investigation of the Anise estrogenic effect, researchers found that the application of Anise displayed estrogenic activity through increased milk secretion, promoting menstruation, facilitating birth, alleviating the symptoms of the male climacteric, and increasing libido.

Further analysis, also suggested that the implication of fennel estrogenic activity was associated with the major bioactive compound anethole found at high levels in the fennel essential oil.

However, even with a lesser amount in fennel essential oil, polymers of anethole, the derivative of di anethole, and photo anethole are considered actual pharmacological values in testing for the drug in the treatment of estrogenic deficiency-related diseases, including menstrual disorder, libido, menopause symptoms, male climacteric,.....

The above differentiation was supported by the evaluation of the estrogenic activity of essential oils of eleven Pimpinella species and the compounds isolated from these species, conducted by Anadolu University.

According to the yeast estrogen screen (YES) assay in the study, Anise essential oils containing (E)-anethole as major compounds showed estrogenic activity, compared to insignificant expression in aerial parts without fruits of P. anisetum and P. flabellifolia.

In the presence of anethole-containing oils from 30-50%, Anise exerted the maximal response in expression estrogenic activity.

Interestingly, Fruits of P. isaurica and P. peucedanifolia were estrogenic in spite of the absence or trace amount of anethole.

These results suggested that the estrogenic activity of Pimpinella oils may also be contributed by other components other than anethole.

In other words, anethole, a major bioactive compound may not be solely responsible for contributing towards estrogenic activity and essential oil isolated from different parts of the plant and species expressed a varied in estrogenic potencies compared to 17 beta-estradiol.

In herbal Anise, the fruit oils were most estrogenic followed by the aerial parts without fruits and the root oils and their EC50 values varied from 45 micrograms/mL to 650 micrograms/mL.

Taken together, Anise and its major bioactive compound anethole may be considered as a functional food for reduced risk, progression, and treatment of estrogenic deficiency syndrome and diseases, such as menopause symptoms and women's reproductive diseases.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits the Production of #ProinflmmatoryCytokines Against the Onset of Vascular Inflammation, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system's self-protection to remove harmful stimuli, including damaged cells, irritants, and pathogens... from our body.

Acute inflammatory inflammation results from the over-response of the immune system after sensing the injury or damage of the body by activating the protein associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The aim of the proinflammatory cytokines is to kill the invasive pathogens, which try to enter the body through the wound.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system in the stimulating production of proinflammatory cytokines may induce overproduction of these cytokines can cause death or damage to the nearby cells, leading to scar formation and symptoms of localized swelling, redness, and fever.

Chronic inflammation is a serious condition caused by the immune system's to adapt to the new change due to its inability to kill all the invasions within a set of times.

Vasoprotection is the process to improve the function of the blood vessels, including the use of herbal and natural remedies.

Blood vessels are the tubular structure including a vein, artery, or capillary which carries the blood through the tissues and organs pumped by the heart.

There 3 main types of blood vessels arteries that deliver oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the tissues and organs of the body. Damage of arteries may induce coronary artery disease associated with the narrowing or blockage of the coronary arteries due to plaques accumulated in the arterial wall.

The veins carry blood toward the heart. Chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) is a common condition associated with a disease of the veins that affects up to 20 percent of adults.

The capillaries or the smallest blood vessels found to induce systemic capillary leak syndrome (SCLS) is a rare acquired disorder.

Vascular inflammation is a condition associated with blood vessel inflammation caused by the overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines involved in vascular inflammation. Atherosclerosis is characterized by chronic inflammation of the vascular wall.

Chronic vascular inflammation has been found to cause historical changes in the blood vessel walls, leading to blood vessel wall thickening, weakening, narrowing, or scarring on orchestrating blood flow restriction, resulting in organ and tissue damage.

The most common symptoms of vascular inflammation are associated with reduced blood flow to supply nutrients and fluid to the body tissues, including fever, headache, fatigue, general aches, and pains, night sweats, rash, numbness, and weakness.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, and wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings, a potential compound for the treatment of acute vascular inflammation researchers evaluated the anti-inflammatory activity, and the cytotoxic effect of a novel chemically modified, non-carbonyl compound enriched Curcuma longa L. (C. longa) extract (CMCE).

According to the tested analysis, CMCE at the concentration of 1 or 10 μg/mL at 14 h, significantly decreased LPS (50-100 ng/mL) induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines including TLR4 expression in THP-1 cells, human, and mouse whole blood.

In THP-1 cells, CMCE inhibited the expression of IRAK1, which plays a critical role in initiating an innate immune response against foreign pathogens, MAPK is involved in directing cellular responses to a diverse array of stimuli.

CMCE (30, 100, and 300 mg/kg; 10 days p.o.) pre-treated and LPS (10 mg/kg) in Swiss mice exhibited attenuated plasma TNF-α, IL-1β, nitrite, aortic iNOS expression, and vascular dysfunction associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

In HL-60 cells., CMCE. exerted cytotoxic effects through cell cycle arrest on the Sub-G1 phase, increased apoptotic cells, loss of mitochondrial membrane in the cancer cells, and activation of cascade associated with pro-apoptosis.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of vascular inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Induces Genotoxicity Against Leukemia Cells, Researchers Suggest

By Kyl;e J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending on the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow, containing two main types of stem cells is the soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone, including the spine, pelvis, underarm, and leg. etc. with the main function of generating blood cells.

Believe it or not, the bone marrow produces 200 billion new red blood cells every day, to replace the blood cells that die off, along with white blood cells and platelets.

According to the statistics provided by the leukemia research, leukemia is diagnosed 10 times more often in adults than children. Approximately, each year the disease causes the death of 68,000 Americans.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the number of extremely immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream into other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, including acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL), acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) and acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common childhood form of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

Chronic leukemia is a condition of the slow but still excessive build-up of relatively mature abnormal white blood cells. the condition has a tendency to spread slowly to other parts of the body through the bloodstream and/or lymphatic system, including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) and chronic myelogenous leukemia (CML).

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of leukemias, researchers explored the antileukemic activity of the dimethyl sulfoxide extract obtained from the roots of W. somnifera (WE).

On a human T-lymphoblastoid cell line, WE exerted a significant cytostatic and cytotoxic activity against the tested cell line observed by the differentiation of the different flow cytometric assays.

Furthermore, WE cytotoxic and cytostatic potential was attributed to the effect involving immunogenic cell death (ICD) observed in dying cancer cells that release damage-associated molecular patterns.

Furthermore, WE also promoted the intracellular Ca(2+) accumulation that alters cancer initiation and the generation of reactive oxygen species to induce cancer cell apoptosis.

In other words, the tested extract processed genotoxic potential. against leukemia cells in vitro.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Since the use of Withania is suggested in different contexts including anti-infertility and osteoarthritis care, its genotoxicity should be carefully considered for an accurate assessment of its risk-benefit profiles".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of leukemia, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Antioxidant #Alliin Found in #Garlic Inhibits the Risk of #LiverCancer, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest detoxed internal organ with a function to filter out blood coming from the intestines before passing them to other parts of the body, cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of liver cell DNA.

Additionally, the liver also produces cholesterol to aid digestion, the production of steroid hormones, vitamin D, and the building of strong cell membranes.

Liver pared to normal liver cells growth which is stopped after a certain stage of division, liver cancer cells can grow indefinitely to form a tumor, leading to reduced function of the liver.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, about 42,030 new cases (29,480 in men and 12,550 in women) will be diagnosed.

Primary liver cancer and intrahepatic bile duct cancer also cause the death of 31,780 people (21,600 men and 10,180 women) in 2019.

In the Western world, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease(NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders induced by obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for liver cancer.

Dr. György Baffy at the Harvard Medical School wrote, "Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) is the fifth most prevalent cancer worldwide and the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), a spectrum of hepatic disorders associated with obesity and metabolic syndrome, is a recognized risk factor for HCC".

And, "NAFLD that is advanced to cirrhosis carries the highest risk for HCC, but there is an increasing concern that NAFLD-associated HCC may also occur in the non-cirrhotic liver".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of liver cancer, researchers examined the bioactive compound alliin isolated from garlic in an animal model, against liver cell DNA damage.
The study included rats induced liver cancer by N-nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) treated by administration of garlic powders for 2 weeks (5% of the diet).

According to the liver comet assay, injection of different garlic powders demonstrated a significant liver protective effect by a 35-60% reduction in DNA damage induced by N-nitroso dimethylamine (NDMA) in rat liver.

Additional injection of alliin content of the garlic powder showed a strongly proportional decrease in NDMA-induced DNA alteration.

Three garlic powders with or without alliin also protected the liver cell against DNA damage induced by aflatoxin B1 in the liver.

However, these decreases were not correlated to the allicin content of the garlic powders.

In other words, additional alliin increased the garlic powder function in the inhibition of liver cancer initiation caused by NDMA while alliin found in the garlic must work with other compounds synergically to induce the same effects.

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
