#Healthyfood #Ginger in the Expression of #Antibiotic Activity Against #ParasiteInfection, Researchers Say
Ginger may be the next pharmaceutical target to identify the natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of diseases caused by a bacterial infection, some studies found.
Infection is a medical condition caused by bacteria multiplication after entering the body.
During the acute phase of infection before the bacteria enter the body, white blood cells of the systematic immune response to the bodily injury and damage by activating not only the emergency repair system to cover the wound through coagulation but also stimulating the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to kill off the invaded pathogens.
However, in many instances, overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines can cause damage or death of nearby cells, leading to improper healing with the formation of scars.
In fact, failure to switch from the phase of production of proinflammatory cytokines to anti-inflammatory can interrupt the healing process, leading to chronic wounds and inflammation.
Some researchers suggested that the failure of the switches may be caused by the weakened immune system that can not kill off all foreign invaders within 3 to 8 weeks.
Researchers continued, our immune system has evolved over thousands of years with an aim to kill off all stimuli and pathogens within a said of time, otherwise, they will adapt to the change, causing low-grade inflammation that cannot be reversed in many diseases such as type 2 diabetes and RA.
Most cases of acute infection were blocked in the first phase of the immune system response. In other words, the white blood cells won, pathogens were destroyed and the wound started to recover process without interruption.
However, if the pathogens won, after entering the body, they can initiate infection through the stage of incubation where bacteria multiplying in the specific tissues and organs, leading to colonization and in facilitating disease development.
Patients with acute bacterial infection usually recover in a short period of time within 3 weeks.
Severely, if the immune system can not get rid of the invaders in the said time, some bacterial pathogens will establish life-long chronic infections by the persistent establishment after an acute infection period.
Dr. Cierny G 3rd, the lead scientist, at the RE Orthopaedics, said," Failure of an acute inflammatory response to resolve a wound infection heralds a cascade of events that affect the host and pathogens, culminating in a chronic, refractory condition".
"The factors contributing to this outcome include immune compromise of the host, antimicrobial resistance, wound-healing deficiencies, and the adherence of pathogens to themselves and wound surfaces via an impenetrable, resistant biofilm.".
These results firmly suggested that if you have a weakened immune system you have a substantially increased risk of chronic bacterial infection.
Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.
The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.
In finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of infection with little or no side effects researchers evaluated the effects of ginger against the monogenean parasite Gyrodactylus turnbulli.
The tested ethanolic and aqueous extracts were prepared for freeze-dried ginger.
An increase in extract concentration was associated with reduced time to parasite immobilization.
Injection at concentrations of 5 and 40ppt ethanolic extract induced parasite death at 26.1±0.7 and 4.9±0.3min, respectively. The ethanolic extract was more efficient. At 75 and 200ppt aqueous ginger extract, induced parasites died at 65.6±2.8 and 1.8±0.2min, respectively.
Bathing G. Turnbull-infected fish in the ethanolic ginger extract (i.e. 5 and 7.5ppt for 90 and 30min, respectively) significantly reduced infection prevalence and intensity.
The higher concentration (i.e. 7.5ppt) proved to be effective as those of Praziquantel, the conventional chemical.
Interestingly, oral treatments of G. Turnbull-infected guppies with diets supplemented with 10 and 20% ginger powder also proved to be ineffective in decreasing parasite load.
Furthermore, in schistosome mansonii-infected mice, extract given daily for 45 days beginning at either 2nd day or 45 days post-infection showed a reduction of worm burden and the egg load in the liver and intestine which coincided with the reduction in granuloma diameters.
Ginger extract exerted a potential effect in reducing some inflammatory mediators that play a crucial role in schistosomal liver fibrosis and its complications.
The in-depth analysis also suggested that ginger extract also minimizes the deleterious effects of inflammatory and oxidative stress markers in the tested mice.
Taken altogether, ginger extracts with the abundant bioactive compound may be used for the prevention and treatment of parasite-infected diseases, pending the larger and multi-center human study.

#Enzyme #Bromelain Inhibits the Symptoms of #FunctionalDyspepsia Cuased by Helicobacter Pylori Infection, According to Studies
Functional dyspepsia, also known as indigestion, is a symptom in the stomach associated with difficulty in digesting food.
The most common symptoms of indigestion are pain or discomfort in your upper abdomen (dyspepsia) or burning pain behind the breastbone (heartburn) soon after eating.
Some patients may also experience symptoms of feeling full or bloated with no signs of relief.
In serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, dark, tarry stools due to damage to the lining of the stomach, shortness of breath, and unexplained weight loss.
If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with the doctor immediately
There exact causes of indigestion are multiple. Epidemiologically, female gender, aging, long-term use of pain relievers, such as aspirin and ibuprofen, smoking, and people with long-term psychological problems such as anxiety or depression are some most common factors found in patients with functional dyspepsia.
Conventionally, treatment of functional dyspepsia is totally depending on the condition, including antibiotics for H. pylori infection and medication to reduce pain.
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
In finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of functional dyspepsia, researchers examined a dietary integrator composed of sodium alginate, sodium bicarbonate, bromelin, and essential oils in patients affected by functional dyspepsia.
The study included a study of a total of 100 patients with functional dyspepsia diagnosed primarily on the basis of typical symptoms and the exclusion of non-functional gastrointestinal diseases.
According to the symptom classification, All patients were assigned to either dysmotility-like dyspepsia (N.=60) or reflux-like dyspepsia (N.=40).
All patients were treated with TUBES Gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid after main meals) for 4 weeks, on top of their current treatment with proton pump inhibitors or not.
According to the results from the experiment, TUBES Gastro showed a high statistically significant reduction of the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) scores at 14 and 28 days: -1.5 (-26.3%) and -3.4 (-59.6%), respectively compared to the baseline in patients with dysmotility-like dyspepsia.
In patients with reflux-like dyspepsia, TUBES Gastro demonstrated a statistically significant reduction of the NRS score at 14 and 28 days: -2.8 (-41.2%) and -4.8 (70.6%), respectively (P<0.0001).
Furthermore, there were no side effects found during the study duration.
Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "TUBES Gastro treatment was effective and well-tolerated in reducing the symptomatology of patients affected by functional dysmotility-like and reflux-like dyspepsia".
In order to reveal additional information of TUBES Gastro anti-functional dyspepsia, researchers at the Molinette Hospital conducted a study to examine the preparation efficacy on a total of 53 consecutive patients (22 males, 31 females; mean age, 54+/-2.5 years) with functional dyspepsia and negative for Helicobacter pylori infection.
Patients classified to four subgroups according to predominant symptom: ulcer-like dyspepsia, Motility-like dyspepsia, reflux-like dyspepsia, and nonspecific dyspepsia, were received TUBES gastro (0.80 g oral tablets bid) for a minimum of 3 months (range, 3-11).
According to the results of patients who completed the study, the preparation showed a strong effect on the improvement in Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). score.
Compared to the based line, the difference in scores between the initial and the final visit was -1.9+/-2.1 cm (range, -6 to +3), or 23.8+/-40.8% (range, -150% to 100%).
Dr. Pellicano R, the lead scientist wrote, "The study results indicate that in the short term TUBES, gastro can significantly improve dyspeptic symptoms in dyspeptic patients negative for H. pylori infection".
Taken altogether, bromelain used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of functional dyspepsia, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Chastetreeberry Reduces #Symptoms of #PremenstrualSyndrome #PMS, According to Studies
Chaste tree berry, the queen of all herbs may have potency in reducing symptoms and treatment of premenstrual syndrome.
According to Dr. Döll M, the extract of chaste tree berry decreased levels of prolactin serum during the first 3 weeks of the cycle of the premenstrual period, inducing stress-involved expression of symptoms of PMS.
Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region, considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts and used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac agent.
Premenstrual syndrome is a faulty function of the ovaries related to the women's menstrual cycle, affecting women's physical and emotional state, and sometimes interfering with daily activities as a result of hormone fluctuation. The syndrome occurs one to two weeks before menstruation and then declines when the period starts.
In a prospective, double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group, multi-center clinical trial in compared VAC BNO 1095 extract and placebo for up to three cycles, conducted by the Peking Union Medical College Hospital, group treated with extract of vitex agnus castus showed significantly reduced symptoms of PMS with mean total PMSD score decreased from 29.23 at baseline (0 cycles) to 6.41 at the termination (3rd cycle) with no serious of side effects.
Furthermore, the extract of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095) orally administrated in 67 patients enrolled and randomly assigned to receive one tablet of VAC or placebo once a day, exhibited decreased premenstrual syndrome symptoms at the 3rd cycle, including symptoms of negative affect, water retention, food cravings, and pain, in the treatment group, compared to the placebo group, especially in symptoms of water retention.
The moderate-to-severe premenstrual syndrome in Chinese women studies also showed a significantly greater improvement of symptoms with intake of vitex agnus castus (VAC, BNO 1095)group than placebo, including the symptom of insomnia.
Taking together, Chaste tree berry may be a safe herbal medicine for the treatment of PMS, through decreased levels of prolactin, negative factors, and ameliorated symptoms of the syndrome in many aspects.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of #KidneyCancer, According to Researchers
Cancer, a class of diseases refers to a group of cells that grow and multiply disorderly and uncontrollably in a specific tissue of an organ.
Over time, after successfully penetrating the deeper layers of the organs, most cancer can travel a distance away to damage other healthy tissues via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.
The kidneys are two bean-shaped organs located just below the rib cage, one on each side of your spine, and formed part of the detoxified organs to filter out blood by removing wastes and extra water to make urine.
Kidney cancer is a medical condition associated with cell growth irregularly that starts in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the kidney tissue, before spreading to the deeper layers to form a tumor through unlimited cell cycle division.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, kidney cancer is among the 10 most common cancers in both men and women in the US. In 2019, approximately, 73,820 new cases of kidney cancer will be diagnosed including 44,120 in men and 29,700 in women. The disease also causes the death of 14,770 Americans, including 9,820 men and 4,950 women in the same year.
The causes of kidney cancer are unknown. However, epidemiologically, the increase in age, gender, smoking, obesity, family diabetes, long-term exposure to chemical toxins, and use of diuretic and nondiuretic anti-hypertensive medication are some prevalent factors found in patients with kidney cancer.
Some researchers suggested the increased incidence of kidney cancer in the US may correlate to obesity caused by the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past decades.
Dr. Wilson KM, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Chan School of Public Health wrote, "Obesity has been largely measured as body mass index (BMI). Studies which evaluated other measures of obesity including waist circumference (WC), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), as well as an increase in weight, have reported similar positive associations with RCC".
And " Although the mechanisms by which obesity influences renal carcinogenesis have been under-explored, insulin resistance and certain growth factors including insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1), sex steroid hormones, and biochemical markers such as adiponectin may be involved".
Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound that processes renal protective activity, researchers examined the effects of Withaferin A, a major chemical constituent of Withania somnifera, in the renal cancer cell line.
According to tested analysis, withaferin A application resulted in apoptotic cell death in several types of human renal cancer cells in a dose-dependent manner.
Furthermore, withaferin A inhibited the Caki cells by inducing signature endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress markers, leading to the accumulation of unfolded proteins associated with cancer cell death.
Moreover, CAAT/enhancer-binding protein-homologous protein (CHOP) associated with pro-apoptotic function in the integrated stress response was elevated by the injection of withaferin A.
Interestingly, withaferin A-induced ER stress causes cytotoxicity against renal cancer cells by increasing levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).
Based on the findings, researchers said, "the present study provides strong evidence supporting an important role of the ER stress response in mediating withaferin A-induced apoptosis".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of renal cancer, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Sulforaphane (SFN) Inhibits the Oxidative Damage Against the Onset of Diabetic Cardiomyopathy, Researchers Say
Diabetes is a medical condition characterized by the failure of the body to utilize insulin in converting glucose to energy, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.
Most cases of diabetes are associated with either beta cells of the pancreas died-off or insulin receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.
Diabetic complications in most cases are caused by long-term unmanaged hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes.
The most common complication of diabetes is associated with the damage of tiny blood vessels that nourish the related organ and tissues, leading to the risk of developing microvascular and macrovascular complications. includes cardiovascular disease.
Diabetic cardiomyopathy is a complication of the heart muscle in people with diabetes, leading to heart failure that causes the reduced function of the heart to circulate blood through the body.
The most common symptoms of diabetic cardiomyopathy are the accumulation of fluid in the lungs or legs.
Dr. Adeghate E, in the examination of the diabetic cardiomyopathy associated with the structural changes in the myocardium of diabetes, wrote, " If left unmanaged, DM can lead to numerous long-term complications including micro- and macro-angiopathy and heart failure (HF)".
And, "Most diabetics usually die as a result of HF resulting from diabetes-induced coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy. Coronary artery disease and cardiomyopathy are normally preceded by hyperglycemia (HG)".
In other words, managing diabetes by preventing the onset of hyperglycemia is the most effective way to reduce the risk of diabetic cardiomyopathy in diabetes.
More precisely, by following a healthy diet to normalize the levels of HbA1c level, accompanied by moderate exercise, the risk of diabetic complications can be manageable.
Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belonging to the family Brassicaceae. It has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads is surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.
With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, researchers examined the effect of broccoli sprout extract in an animal model.
The study included male db/db and age-matched wild-type (WT) mice given sulforaphane (SFN, an Nrf2 activator) and its natural source, broccoli sprout extract (BSE) by gavage every other day for 3 months, including vehicle (0.1 ml/10 g), BSE-low dose (estimated SFN availability at 0.5 mg/kg), BSE-high dose (estimated SFN availability at 1.0 mg/kg), and SFN (0.5 mg/kg).
According to the results of echocardiography and histopathological analysis, both BSE and SFN showed significant prevention of diabetes-induced cardiac dysfunction, hypertrophy, and fibrosis.
Furthermore, BSE, like SFN, significantly exhibited the Nrf2 transcriptional activity associated with the protective effect of oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.
In other words, stimulating the Nrf2 function of the protein, BSE, and SFN significantly prevented cardiac oxidative damage and inflammation.
Moreover, BSE at high doses exerted a similar effect as those of SFN. particularly, in BSE at a high dose that works synergistically with SFN to prevent DCM.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "BSE could potentially be used as a natural and safe treatment against DCM via Nrf2 activation".
Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diabetic cardiomyopathy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of SFN in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical 3,3'-Diindolylmethane Gobbles Up of Ovarian Cancer Cells, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Ovarian cancer is the medical and chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues found either in at the tail ends of the fallopian tubes or the ovaries.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, ovarian cancer is one of the deadly reproductive cancer in women. Every year, the disease causes more deaths than any other cancer of the female reproductive system.
The lifetime risk of a woman getting ovarian cancer is 1/78 compared to the lifetime dying risk of 1/108.
The 5-year relative survival of all stages of ovarian cancer is 47%. However, women with ovarian cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of over 92%.
The exact causes of ovarian cancer are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested that women who have endometriosis, genetic preposition such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene, acquired genetic mutation such as TP53 tumor suppressor gene are susceptible to the substantial risk of the development of the disease.
Besides sharing the common symptoms of other types of cancer, most ovarian cancer patients may experience symptoms of discomfort in the pelvic area, changes in bowel habits, such as constipation. and a frequent need to urinate.
In seeking a natural product that processes anti-ovarian cancer property, researchers examined the effects of 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM) on ovarian cancer cell viability, invasion, and sensitivity to chemotherapy.
According to the final results obtained by the ovarian cancer SKOV3 and A2780 cell lines treated by the 3,3'-diindolylmethane (DIM), DIM treatment not only potently suppressed the viabilities of ovarian cancer cells but also inhibited xenograft growth in nude mice.
Furthermore, according to the gene analysis, DIM inhibited phosphorylation of STAT3 and AKT proteins and proteins activated by STAT3 and AKT involved in cell growth and division and cell movement in the ovarian cancer SKOV3 and A2780 cell lines
Moreover, DIM inhibited the production of protein and genes associated with the production of a new blood vessel for the cancer cells to grow, promotion of cancer cell survival and anti-apoptosis.
Additionally, in order to obtain more information about DIM anti-ovarian cancer effects, researchers examined the phytochemical activity of Interleukin (IL6) which has been found to be a major contributor to the initiation and progression of ovarian cancer.
During the experiment, human ovarian carcinoma-derived cell lines SKOV3 and A2780 treated with IL6 and/or DIM and subjected to in vitro proliferation, DIM inhibited the increase of ovarian cancer cell adhesion, migration, and invasion caused by the administration of IL-6 through deactivated the expression of protein STAT3 similar to that of the aforementioned study.
Importantly, DIM induced ovarian cancer cells apoptosis associated with the inhibition of the expression matrix metalloproteinases MMP-2 and MMP-9 associated with the pathologic relationship to cancer.
Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Reduces the Risk of Atherosclerosis, Researchers Find
Atherosclerosis is a condition caused by long-term plaques built-up on the wall of the arteries. Over time, continued plaque accumulation can lead to cardiovascular disease.
In other words, narrowing the arteries due to plaque accumulation is a major cause of heart disease and stroke.
Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.
Epidemiologically, the most common risk factors of atherosclerosis are unhealthy blood cholesterol levels associated with high levels of bad and low levels of good cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, insulin resistance, diabetes, overweight or obesity, and physical inactivity.
The most common symptoms found in patients with antiatherosclerosis are involved in the reduced blood flow to the body including, chest pain or angina, pain in the leg, and arm, shortness of breath and fatigue, and confusion.
Some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet that induces widespread obesity in the Western world may be one of the major culprits that cause atherosclerosis.
Dr. Lovren F and colleagues wrote, "Obesity is a multifactorial chronic disease characterized by an accumulation of visceral and subcutaneous fat, which leads to a predisposition toward cardiometabolic diseases".
And, " A plethora of mechanisms, including abnormalities in lipid metabolism, insulin resistance, inflammation, endothelial dysfunction, adipokine imbalance, and inflammasome activation have been suggested to underlie the relationship between obesity and atherosclerosis.".
Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomatoes in the class of carotenoids, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,
Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a potent compound for the protection of arterial functions, researchers investigated the effects of lycopene on the diet-induced increase in serum lipid levels and the initiation of atherosclerosis in an animal model.
New Zealand White (NZW) rabbits. enrolled in the study were divided into four groups of 9 animals each, fed either a standard diet, a high-cholesterol diet containing 0.5% cholesterol, a high-cholesterol diet containing placebo beadlets, or a high-cholesterol diet plus 5 mg/kg body weight/day of lycopene (in the form of lycopene beadlets), for 4 weeks.
According to the chemical analysis of phytochemicals, the animal group treated with lycopene beadlets showed significantly elevated lycopene plasma levels compared to other groups.
The lycopene group demonstrated a significant reduction of 50% in total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol serum levels compared to the high-cholesterol and placebo groups.
Levels of cholesteryl ester accumulated in the aorta were significantly decreased in the lycopene-treated group without a significant decrease in the extent of aortic surface lipid accumulation.
In other words, lycopene inhibited some parameters associated with the increased risk of atherosclerosis, particularly in cholesterol levels.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "Lycopene supplementation for 4 weeks increased lycopene plasma levels in the animals. Although we found strongly reduced total and LDL cholesterol serum levels as well as significantly lower amounts of cholesteryl ester in the aortae in the lycopene-treated group".
Moreover, in the comparison of the antiatherosclerotic effect of two antioxidants such as astaxanthin and lycopene in the animal model, lycopene exerted an anti-atherosclerotic property in high cholesterol diet-fed rats by decreasing TC, LDL-C, VLDL-C, and triglycerides and increased HDL-C level significantly compared to the control.
Lycopene used a combination with Astaxanthin also showed better hypolipidemic and anti-atherogenic potential compared to the individual application.
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
