#Healthyfood #Garlic Reduces the Risks and Complications of #CardiovascularDiseases, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases refer to heart diseases, affecting millions of people in the world. According to statistic, over 17.7 million people died from CVDs in 2015, Hyperlipidaemia and hypertension are the risk factors of the diseases.

There are many causes of heart disease. Anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart can be defined as a risk of heart disease. Here are some early indications of heart disease symptoms:
Garlic (Allium sativum) is a species in the onion genus, belonging to the family Amaryllidaceae, native to central Asia. It has been used popularly in traditional and Chinese medicine in treating common cold and flu to the Plague, blood pressure cholesterol levels, natural antibiotics, etc.

A recent study suggested that garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of heart disease.

According to Nihon University, organosulfur compounds found in garlic induce the functions of our body in attenuating the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Dr. Kulczyński B, the lead author insisted that the effectiveness of garlic for the prevention and treatment of heart diseases probably is the result of the whole herb in the demonstration of their antioxidant, chemopreventive, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory properties.

Other researchers suggested the role of garlic in alleviating the risks of metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular complications is due to its modulatory effects on hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia and oxidative stress.

Garlic also has the potential to treat mild hypertension, decrease hypercholesterolemia, and prevent atherosclerosis, according to the joint study led by the Jordan University of Science and Technology,

Dr. Alali FQ, the lead author of the study also said, " Garlic (Allium sativum L.), a top-selling herbal dietary supplement, is renowned for its wide range of beneficial effects, particularly in the treatment and prevention of CVD".

In fact, data published after the year 2000 convincingly pointed out that garlic reduces the cardiovascular risk substantially, through inhibition of abnormal plasma lipids, oxidized low-density lipoproteins (LDL), abnormal platelet aggregation and high blood pressure.

Adding garlic into one diet may reduce the risk of the diseases if accompanied with the intake of more vegetables, fruits, and change of lifestyle.

#Healthyfood #GreenPeas Exhibits Anti Cancer Activities, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a group of cell-mutated diseases caused by the alternation of DNA.
Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of an organ. At an early, most people with cancer are asymptomatic.

At the later stage, due to the size and the tumor, patients may experience general cancer symptoms such as unintended weight loss, fatigue, gastrointestinal discomfort, and loss of appetite, and localized symptoms such as severe pain and bleeding.

The exact causes of cancer are not identified. However, the most prevalent factors associated with cancer onset include age, family history, long-term exposure to certain cancer-induced chemicals, use of tobacco, and excessive alcohol drinking,..... the list goes on and on, depending on the type of cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the most common risk factor that causes cancer in the Western world may be associated with widespread obesity.

Dr. Karen Basen-Engquist, in the evaluation of the obesity risk of cancer, said, "In the United States, approximately 85,000 new cancer cases per year are related to obesity. Recent research has found that as the body mass index increases by 5 kg/m2, cancer mortality increases by 10%".

And, "High priorities for future research involve additional work on the underlying mechanisms, and trials to examine the effect of lifestyle behavior change and weight loss interventions on cancer and intermediate biomarkers".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of cancer is increased substantially in obese.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

In finding a potent ingredient for cancer treatment, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) extracts anti-DNA alternative activity.

According to the studies,
* The extracts of P. sativum have been found to be pharmacologically active inducing anticancer effects.

* Compared to the effect of Bowman-Birk trypsin-chymotrypsin inhibitor, a potential cancer chemopreventive agent, with the protease inhibitors, rTl1B and rTl2B, P. sativum seed showed similar significant activity.

* In human colorectal adenocarcinoma HT-29, P. sativum extracted lectins from Egypt exhibited the antiproliferative property to liver cancer cell line.

* In MCF-7 (breast), HepG-2 (liver), HEP-2 (larynx), and HCT-116 (colon). an extracted lectin from the leaves and buds of P. sativum demonstrated cytotoxic properties.

* Recently, the seed extracts also showed cytotoxic effects on LS174 (colon), MDA-MB-453 (breast), A594 (lung), and K562 (blood) cell lines.

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Turmeric Inhibits the Risk of #ChronicDiseases Associated with Inflammation, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.
Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal conditions also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammation are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues.

However, if the immune first line of defense can not completely destroy the invaders within a period of 3 to 8 weeks, it will compromise, leading to low-grade chronic inflammation.

Diseases associated with low-grade chronic inflammation include diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer.

Dr. in the examination of the etiology of chronic inflammation (CI) suggested that CI can result from the following:
* Failure of eliminating the agent causing an acute inflammation such as infectious disease induced organisms
* Long-term exposure to a low level of particular irritant or foreign materials that cannot be eliminated by an enzymatic breakdown in the body including substances or industrial chemicals.

* An autoimmune disorder caused by the immune system that attacks healthy tissue, such as rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)

* Recurrent episodes of acute inflammation.

* Inflammation that causes oxidative stress and mitochondrial dysfunction such as advanced glycation end products (AGEs).

Conventionally, treatment of acute phase inflammation is to manage inflammation and prevent the risk of long-term damage, including anti-inflammatory nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) which can be bought without a prescription.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the efficacy of turmeric on continued oxidative stress and oxidative damage that lead to chronic inflammation in the mediation of most chronic diseases.

At the molecular level, turmeric showed a significant anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing the proteins associated with the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, including the NF-κB and COX-2.

Furthermore, the proteins associated with the response to cytokines and growth factors such as signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 was also inhibited by the injection of turmeric.

Moreover, the administration of turmeric also inhibited the production of ROS by promoting the production of antioxidants enzymes such as nrf2, a protein that regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage.

Furthermore, numerous studies also indicated that curcumin not only is highly potent against antimicrobial disease but also inhibited the onset of various chronic diseases including cancers, diabetes, obesity, cardiovascular, pulmonary, neurological, and autoimmune diseases.

As of today, over 100 different clinical trials also showed that curcumin is safe, tolerable, and effective against various chronic diseases in humans.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #CollardGreens Inhibit the Risk of Atherothrombotic Diseases, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Platelet aggregation is a condition characterized by platelets clumping together in the blood. The process also is necessary for the recovery of vascular injury. However, overexpression of platelet counts in the blood is problematic for human health.

In other words, the production of blood platelets is to protect tissue injury against infection.
Furthermore, platelet disorders can lead to abnormal bleeding. Most common types of the genetic proposition of platelet disorders including

* Disorder of platelet adhesion, also known as Bernard-Soulier Syndrome is a condition in which the platelets fail to adhere together, leading to frequent bruises, nose bleeds, and bleeding in the mouth and gums.

* Disorder of platelet aggregation also known as Glanzmann Thrombasthenia is a condition that the platelets not only fail to cover at the site of an injury but also prolong the bleeding.

* Disorder of platelet secretion is a condition that causes the slowing down of normal platelet adhesion, aggregation, and repair of the blood vessel.

* Disorder of platelets procoagulant activity, also known as Scott Syndrome is a condition in which the platelets fail to promote activation of the blood clotting proteins.

Conventionally, certain medications with blood-thinning activity such as aspirin (ASA) and other drugs containing aspirin non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, and some antibiotics may have a strong implication for the formation of platelets coagulation.

Dr. Wolberg AS in the examination of fibrinolysis in the changes in the local concentrations of pro- and anti-coagulants and cellular activities may affect the clot-forming wrote, "patterns of abnormal thrombin generation produce clots with altered fibrin structure and that these changes are associated with an increased risk of bleeding or thrombosis".

These results strongly outline the importance of fibrin in the formation of a blood clot in the presence of thrombin that converts fibrinogen to fibrin.

Collard Green is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin. Today, the plant is cultivated commercially for its thick, slightly bitter edible leaves.

In finding a potential plant that processes thrombolytic activity researchers compared the effects of
the clot lysis effect of the crude extracts and fractions of five Bangladeshi plants viz., Trema Orientalis L., Bacopa monnieri L., Capsicum frutescens L., Brassica oleracea L., and Urena sinuata L.
The study was conducted in vitro thrombolytic model with streptokinase as a positive control and water as a negative control.

Family of Brassica oleracea showed a range of clot lysis activity of 30.24 ± 0.95% compared to 46.44 ± 2.44% in T. Orientalis, 48.39 ± 10.12% in B. monnieri, 36.87 ± .27% in C. frutescens, and 47.89 ± 6.83% in U. sinuata, compared with positive control on standard streptokinase (80.77 ± 1.12%) and negative control on sterile distilled water (5.69 ± 3.09%).

Low-value clot lysis activity of the Family of Brassica oleracea was found associated with a lack of bio-active components and/or insufficient quantities in the extract.

According to the clot lysis results, chloroform-soluble phytochemicals from these plants were found to contribute to the activity of thrombolysis.

Therefore, chloroform-soluble phytochemicals isolated from these plants including the Family of Brassica oleracea may be incorporated as a thrombolytic agent for the improvement of patients suffering from atherothrombotic diseases.

Taken altogether, collard green consists of chloroform soluble phytochemicals that may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of atherothrombotic diseases, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthyfood #CucumberJuices, the Liver Detoxed Remedy Against Alcohol Toxicity, According to Studies

By Kyle . Norton

Alcohol toxicity is a result of excessive consumption of alcohol that leads to alcohol poisoning.
People with a high level of blood alcohol may experience symptoms of confusion, unresponsiveness, and disorientation.

If severe cases, patients may lose conscientiousness or go into a coma.

Long-term excessive alcohol consumption may cause liver damage, leading to the symptoms of jaundice, cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.

Some people may experience symptoms of alcohol withdrawal symptoms after a day of heavy drinking day. Depending on the body's response, some people may experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms as early as two hours after the last drink.

However, most people may experience the symptoms as soon as they wake up after a night of sleep. The symptoms will peak within the first 24 to 48 hours.

The most common alcohol withdrawal symptoms are a rapid heartbeat changes in blood pressure, sweating, tremors, and fever.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound that processes anti-alcoholic toxicity, researchers investigated the heat-treated cucumber juice's protective effect on blood alcohol levels and hepatic alcohol metabolic enzyme system in experimental rats.

The study included alcoholic toxicity rats orally dosed with 22% alcohol (6ml/kg body weight) along with different concentrations of heat-treated cucumber juice (10, 100, and 500mg/kg) and commercial goods for hangover-removal on sale (2ml/kg).

According to the tested results, after 7h, all concentrations of heat-treated cucumber remarkably reduced the blood alcohol levels.

Furthermore, levels of dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymatic activities associated with detoxicity in rat liver at 9h after alcohol administration were also increased in the treated rats.

The effect of heat-treated cucumber juice on alcohol detoxification was observed only in the rats treated before 30min from alcohol administration may be involved in stimulated blood alcohol metabolism.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "These findings indicate that heat-treated cucumber juice has a significant protective effect on alcohol detoxification in experimental rats, suggesting its usefulness in the treatment of the liver injury caused by alcohol consumption".

Taken altogether, heat-treated cucumber may be used for the prevention and treatment of alcoholic toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Coltsfoot Inhibits the Risk of #Colitis, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a condition characterized by the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

The disease can be caused by infection, such as inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved in the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases induced both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine and preserves the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), researchers examined the anti-colitis effect of Tussilagone (TSL), a major component of Tussilago farfara.

On mice subjected to acute colitis induced by dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), Tussilago showed a significant protective effect by ameliorating weight loss, and colonic inflammatory damage.

Proteins associated with pro-inflammatory cytokines such as the expression of tumor necrosis factor-α and interleukin-6 and the activity of myeloperoxidase in colonic tissues were inhibited by tussilagone treated mice.

Furthermore, tussilagone treatment reduced the numbers of nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) in the induction of cytokines and increased the numbers of nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) involved the production of antioxidant enzymes in nuclei of colonic tissues.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " tussilagone treatment attenuated DSS-induced colitis in mice through inhibiting the activation of NF-κB and inducing Nrf2 pathways, indicating that tussilagone is a potent therapeutic candidate for the treatment of intestinal ".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of colitis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Sinigrin Inhibit the Risk of #TongueCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive ingredient for the treatment of tongue cancer with no side effects, according to studies.
Tongue cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the tongue, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of tongue cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tongue. At the early stage, tongue cancer patients may not experience any size due to the very small tumors.

However, at the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of persistent tongue and/or jaw pain as the tumor has pressed on the nearby nerve cells, a lump or tumor inside the mouth. a white or red patch on the gums, tongue, tonsil, or lining in the mouth, and persistent sore throat and difficulty swallowing or chewing.

If you have some of the above symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

There are many risk factors associated with the disease, including long-term use of tobacco, excessive alcohol drinking, and sun exposure to your lips.

Some researchers suggested that the sexually transmitted virus human papillomavirus (HPV) and people with a weakened immune systems also have been found in patients with tongue cancer.

The Cleveland Clinic wrote in the article Oropharyngeal Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Infection

"Human papillomavirus (HPV), commonly known as the virus that causes genital warts and cervical cancer in women, is increasingly being recognized now as a cause of infections that colonize the back of the mouth (throat or oropharynx), including the tongue base and tonsils, and potentially a cause of cancer of the head and neck".

The results strongly suggested that people who carry the HPV virus in their mouth are at an increased risk of tongue cancer, compared to those without.

Sinigrin is a phytochemical glucosinolate, belonging to the family of glucosides found abundantly in Brussels sprouts, broccoli, the seeds of black mustard, etc.

Scientists searching for natural compounds with inhibitory activity against tongue carcinogenesis examined the effects of indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and sinigrin (SIN) on the initiation and post-initiation phases of tongue cancer.

Selected male ACI/N rats. induced tongue cancer by the injection of 4-nitroquinoline 1-oxide (4-NQO) divided into
* Group 1 was given 4-NQO (10 ppm) in the drinking water for 12 weeks, starting at 7 weeks of age;

* Groups 2 and 3 were given 4-NQO and fed the diets containing I3C (1,000 ppm) and SIN (1,200 ppm) for 14 weeks, respectively, starting at 6 weeks of age;

* Groups 4 and 5 were given 4-NQO and then they were fed I3C and SIN-containing diets for 23 weeks, respectively, starting one week after 4-NQO exposure;

* Groups 6 and 7 were given I3C and SIN alone, respectively, during the experiment; and

* Group 8 served as an untreated control.
At the end of the experiment at week 37, the incidence of tongue neoplasms (squamous cell papilloma and carcinoma) in group 2 (1/15, 7%), group 3 (1/15, 7%), group 4 (3/15, 20%) or group 5 (2/15, 13%) was significantly smaller than that in group 1 (12/17, 71%).

Group groups 2, 3, and 5 showed no tongue carcinomas developed. In other words, the injection of I3C and SIN restored the infected cell to healthy levels induced by the 4-NQO.

The group treated with I3C and SIN also showed reduced levels of the incidence of preneoplastic lesions such as hyperplasia and dysplasia.

In other words, I3C and SIN not only are effective against tongue cancer but also inhibit the progression of preneoplastic lesions of the tongue in group 2 (11/15, 73%), group 3 (10/15, 67%), group 4 (11/15, 73%) or group 5 (10/15, 67%) was significantly lower than that in group 1 (17/17, 100%) (P = 0.04 or P = 0.02).

Furthermore, There were no tongue neoplasms in rats of groups 6, 7, and 8.

Moreover, the Administration of I3C and SIN also caused significant decreases in the number and area of silver-stained nucleolar organizer regions protein (AgNORs) in the expression of the tongue tumor pathology.

Dr. Tanaka T and colleagues wrote in the final report, " I3C and SIN inhibited rat tongue carcinogenesis in both the initiation and post-initiation phases when administered in these respective phases together with, or following treatment with, 4-NQO".

Taken altogether, sinigrin (SIN) used alone or combined with I3C may be effective for the prevention and treatment of tongue cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SIN in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
