The digestive system including the gastrointestinal tract, the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder plays a critical role to maintain the body's normal function by providing nutrients and fluids to the body and remove waste through the secretary system.

Digestion is a process of the digestive system by breaking out food after food intake through mechanical and enzymatic action.

Indigestion, on the other hand, is a symptom of another digestive disease, including GERD. Most cases of indigestion not caused by underlying diseases can be resolved quickly.

People with indigestion experience symptoms differently. Some may feel the symptoms occasionally while others may feel them often and daily.

There are a number of risk factors associated with digestive disorders including bacterial and/or viral infection, inflammation, lactase deficiency, anti-inflammatory drugs, and certain conditions such as ruptured or perforated organs, muscle dysfunction, and gallstones.

However, some researchers suggested that there is a strong correlation between the risk of digestive disorders in obese patients.

Dr. Su Youn Nam, in the investigation of obesity-related digestive diseases, wrote, "Obesity-related digestive diseases include gastroesophageal reflux disease, Barrett’s esophagus, esophageal cancer, colon polyp and cancer, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, hepatitis C-related disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, gallstone, cholangiocarcinoma, and pancreatic cancer".

And, "Although obesity-related esophageal diseases are associated with altered mechanical and humoral factors, other obesity-related digestive diseases seem to be associated with obesity-induced altered circulating levels of adipocytokines and insulin resistance".

The findings strongly indicated the risk of digestive disorders in obese is substantially higher compared to healthy-weight individuals.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalayas Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of digestive diseases, researchers investigated the effects of soybean meal (SBM) substitution by a mixture of rapeseed meal (RSM), white lupine seeds (WLS), and pea seeds (PS) on gastrointestinal function in Hyplus rabbits.

Selected Hyplus rabbits were fed by either a control diet (SBM15) containing 15% SBM, or diet SBM7.5 containing 7.5% SBM, 5% RSM, 4% WLS, and 3% PS. In diet SBM0 or diet SBM0, SBM completely was replaced by RSM, WLS, and PS (10%, 8%, and 6%, respectively).

Based on the tested analysis, the experimental diets did not cause significant differences in performance parameters evaluated in vivo and post-mortem, and in the nutrient and energy digestibility of nitrogen retention.

However, the change of enzymatic activity of large gut microbiota in flavors of the good bacteria was found to have a similar effect in the comparison of diet SBM and the mixture of RSM, WLS, and PS.

In other words, pea seeds (PS) used a combination with rapeseed meal (RSM) and lupine seeds (WLS) processes a significant effect in balancing the levels of microbiota in the promotion of digestive functioning.

Taken altogether, green peas used alone or combined with other healthy food may be considered a remedy for the promotion of gastrointestinal health, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bile acids are synthesized by oxidation from cholesterol in the liver, flowing to the gallbladder to aid digestion.
Bile acid-binding is a process to interfere with normal fat digestion and absorption, including preventing the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins such as A, D, E, and K.

In other words, the binding of bile acids (BAs) may have a solid effect on lowering blood cholesterol levels by increasing the excretion of bile acids in the stool and reducing the amount of bile acid returning to the liver.

By inhibiting the levels of bile acid caused by a certain type of liver/bile duct disease such as partial biliary obstruction, levels of cholesterol can be controlled.

Conventionally, the effects of bile acid sequestrants are limited. Low doses of 8 grams/day of Cholestyramine, a bile acid sequestrant, which binds bile in the gastrointestinal tract to prevent its reabsorption can lower LDL cholesterol by 10%-15% compared to high doses of 24 grams/day of only 25%.

In other words, bile acid-binding medicine such as Cholestyramine, used alone is less effective, compared to statins in lowering LDL cholesterol.

The most common symptoms associated with the intake of Cholestyramine are constipation, diarrhea, stomach/abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, vomiting, and loss of appetite.

Bile acid sequestrants such as lovastatin combined with niacin may be used to lower aggressively lower LDL cholesterol levels.

Dr. Gordon Schectman and colleagues in the study published at the American Journals of Cardiology wrote, " Niacin and lovastatin are effective drugs for hypercholesterolemia management in the Veterans Administration Medical Center setting. However, in elderly veterans, bile acid sequestrants were associated with a higher rate of adverse effects limiting compliance, and psyllium was ineffective".

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe.

Kale's leave is highly nutritious and cultivated as food in most parts of Europe.

Furthermore, kale also prevented cholesterol reabsorption into the blood by binding to hydrophobic bile acids, chenodeoxycholic acid, and deoxycholic acid preferably.

These results suggested that kale processes the highest anti-hypercholesterolemic activity by binding to bile acids compared to other veggies in the same family.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Regular consumption of kale, especially minimally processed kale, can help excrete more bile acids and, thus, may lower the risk of hypercholesterolemia".

Taken altogether, kale may be considered a functional food for the promotion of bile acid-binding, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cardiovascular disease is a class of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels. In other words, CVD can be a result of anything that impedes the function of the heart and blood vessels.

Cardio-protection is a process to preserve the function and integrity of the cardiac muscle cell.
In other words, cardio-protection is an action that protects heart muscle against damage, including the use of herbal medicine.


Cardiotoxicity induced by toxins reduced the heart-pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs. The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients who received chemotherapy and certain medications.

The study included Swiss albino mice that were divided into seven groups (eight per group) received saline (control), tulathromycin (a single subcutaneous dose of 28 mg/kg/bw on day 14), DFS (a single oral dose of 100 mg/kg/bw on day 14), tulathromycin plus DFS, or lycopene (oral, 10 mg/kg/bw daily for 15 d) combined with tulathromycin, DFS, or both.

According to the tested analysis, tulathromycin or DFS-treated groups (individually or in combination) displayed a significantly elevated (p < 0.05) serum levels of Creatine kinase-myocardial B fraction (CK-MB), lactate dehydrogenase, and cardiac-specific troponin-T, the cardio-markers associated with significant heart tissue damage.

Furthermore, cardio oxidative stress markers were also elevated in the tulathromycin or DFS-treated groups tissue, including levels of nitric oxide and malondialdehyde.

The levels of antioxidant enzymes in the host treated by tulathromycin or DFS were significantly decreased observed in the cardio tissues, observed by the glutathione content and glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase antioxidant.

Moreover, compared to the control group, the mean pathology scores and the percentages of proteins involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines were also increased substantially in the tulathromycin- and/or DFS-treated groups.

Believed it or not, co-administration of lycopene in the tulathromycin- and/or DFS-treated groups showed a significant amelioration of all parameter changes that caused cardio tissue damage.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "DFS could potentiate the cardiotoxic effects of tulathromycin, whereas lycopene can serve as a cardioprotective agent against DFS and tulathromycin."

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardio damage, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Healthy #Tomatoes in the Prevention and Treatment of Age-Related #MacularDegeneration (AMD), According to Studies

Macular degeneration is a condition caused by the blurring of the center of the vision without affecting the side or peripheral vision.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an aging process found in older adults and is the leading cause of blindness in adults over the age of 55.

Most adults with age-related macular degeneration (AMD) are asymptomatic. However, it can be detected by professionals during annual eye check-ups.

Untreated AMD, over time, can lead to the increased size of blur areas and interfere with vision, including reading.

AMD can be classified into 2 types
* The dry form is a milder form found in most patients with AMD with gradual degeneration of the central retinal tissues that make up the macula.

* The wet form is the serious form of AMD accounting for only 10% of all patients

However, the dry form can develop into a wet form over time.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no effective treatment for AMD. Most treatments such as low vision aids and lifestyle control are to delay the progression and improve quality of life.

In some cases, wet AMD may be treated with medications injected into the eye to stop leaking blood vessels, depending on the disease severity.

Besides aging and exposure to UVB, smoking has been found to increase the risk of AMD by 2-5 fold.

Dr. Sara Velilla, the lead scientist said, "Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is one of the main socioeconomic health issues worldwide. AMD has a multifactorial etiology with a variety of risk factors. Smoking is the most important modifiable risk factor for AMD development and progression".

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

With an aim to find a natural treatment for eye disease, researchers examined the combinations of antioxidants including lutein+zeaxanthin (1 μM; 0.2 μM), zinc (10 µM), carnosic acid (2 µM), beta-carotene (2 µM), and standardized tomato extract containing lycopene and other tomato phytonutrients added to the culture media against age-related macular degeneration (AMD).

Injection of the combination protected the eye against age-related macular degeneration (AMD) by yielding an antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, and antiangiogenic effect in M1 and M2 macrophages.

The results of the effects were attributed to the upregulation of antioxidative genes (HMOX1, SOD1) expression and the inhibition of pro-angiogenic genes and pro-inflammatory genes (SDF-1, TNF-alpha, IL-6, MCP-1).

Compared to the combination, lutein monotherapy or a combination of lutein and zinc had less effect on the expression of these genes.

Dr.Rinsky B, the lead scientist said, "Combinations of supplements can modify the expression of genes and proteins that may be relevant for the involvement of macrophages in the pathogenesis of AMD".

Furthermore, in oxidative stress-induced damage to the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) on age-related macular degeneration and neovascular retinopathies (e.g., retinopathy of prematurity, diabetic retinopathy, researchers investigated xanthophyll carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin, isolated from toma in damage of retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells.

Also, the administration of carotenoids, lutein, and zeaxanthin showed to protect the macula (and the broader retina) via their antioxidant and photoprotective activities.


In undifferentiated ARPE-19 cells, lutein and lycopene, but not β-carotene, protected the cell integrity and viability by inhibiting the overexpression of retinal cell growth.

Moreover, pre-incubation of ARPE-19 cells with lutein or lycopene protected against tBHP-induced cell loss and cell co-exposure of lutein or lycopene with tBHP essentially neutralized tBHP-dependent cell death at tBHP concentrations up to 500 μM.

Where tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP) is an organic peroxide used to induce oxidation processes.

In other words, lutein and lycopene protected the RPE against oxidative stress-induced cell loss

Taken altogether, tomatoes may be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Hypertension is a condition of abnormally high blood pressure. It also is a member of the cluster of metabolic syndrome associated with the risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Blood pressure is the force of the blood pushing against the arterial walls. In high blood pressure, the heart has to work harder than normal to pump blood through the circulation system. Over time, high blood pressure has been found to cause damage to the heart and arteries.

The results strongly suggested that only the TNC dose of 15 mg lycopene or higher has a beneficial effect on SBP in hypertension.

Scientists may have found an alkaloid in black pepper for the enhancement of immune function with no side effects, according to studies.
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

Through the expression of the lines of defense, depending on the stage of pathogenic invasion, the innate immune response protects the body via a different set of interactions.

In the acute phase of infection, the macrophages in the immune system stimulate the production of inflammatory cytokines at the site of the damage. The inflammatory cytokines not only play a critical role in stopping the stimuli from entering the body but also speeds up wound healing through growth factors.

The innate immune system also can destroy damaged cells such as cancer cells through the T cell activation of B cells which in turn stimulates the production of a protein associated with the production of antibody p53.

Some researchers suggested immune system also can kill cancer cells by reacting to activating cytokines (IFN-α/β, IL-12, IL-15, IL-18, IL-21) produced by tumor cells or by other immune cells stimulated by tumor cells.

Therefore, by modulating the immune responses to the needs of the body, the immune can keep us strong and diseases free.

Dr. Assaf Marcus and colleagues in the investigation of the study "Recognition of tumors by the innate immune system and natural killer cells" wrote, " First, cell-intrinsic mechanisms, like any other mechanism, are prone to failure, necessitating the existence of redundant systems. A second, unique, benefit of immune mechanisms of tumor suppression is that they can act in a paracrine manner. Secretion of cytokines such as IFN-γ, for example, can suppress the growth of neighboring tumor cells even if they do not upregulate immune-activating ligands".

And, "Secretion of cytokines such as IFN-γ, for example, can suppress the growth of neighboring tumor cells".

These results clearly suggested by keeping your immune system strong, you can be free from infectious diseases and cancers.

Piperine is a phytochemical alkaloid in the class of organosulfur compounds, found abundantly in white and black pepper, long pepper, etc.

With an aim to find a natural bioactive compound that processes the immune-enhancing effect, researchers assessed the production of antibody response against Russell's viper venom in mice after prophylactic immunization with ethanolic extract of fruits of Piper longum L. and piperine, compared to that of the Polyvalent anti-snake venom serum (antivenom)(PLE) manufactured by Haffkine Bio-Pharmaceutical Corporation Ltd.

According to the results from the tested assay, treatment with PLE-treated mice serum and piperine-treated mice serum was found to inhibit the lethal action of venom both in vitro.

Furthermore, there were significantly high (p<0.01) levels of cross-reactions between the PLE and piperine-treated mice serum and the venom antigens.
However, immunization with ethanolic extract of fruits of Piper longum and Piperine produced a high titer antibody response against Russell's viper venom in mice, compared to PLE.

These results suggested that piperine stimulated the immune function in producing antigens against the lethal action of venom and may be considered a potential for the development of antivenom formulation as an antidote against snake bites.

In embryonated fertile chicken eggs, researchers found that PLE was found to inhibit the venom-induced hemorrhage in the eggs.


Combined administration of PLE and piperine significantly inhibited venom-induced lethality, hemorrhage, necrosis, defibrinogenation, and inflammatory paw edema in mice in a dose-dependent manner.

LE and piperine also significantly (p<0.01) reduced venom-induced mast cell degranulation in rats by improving the immune responses to inflammatory and allergic reactions.

Before treatment, the injection of venom in mice showed reduced levels of catalase enzyme levels in mice kidney tissue and an increase in creatine kinase enzyme levels, an indication of inflammation.

Combined administration of both PLE and piperine also restored the antioxidant enzymes which were suppressed by the injection of venom in mice

These findings suggested that piperine not only protects our body against venom-induced hemorrhage, necrosis, defibrinogenation but also inhibited an overreaction of the immune response in the stimulation of inflammation.

Moreover, piperine is effective compared to those of antivenom medicine.

Taken altogether, Piperine may be considered a bioactive compound for the treatment of venom caused by insect and poison animal bites, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of one or 2 slices of ginger daily and regularly may have a strong effect in stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes in the body against the onset of oxidative stress, scientists found.
Oxidative stress is a result of the overexpression of free radicals, compared to the levels of antioxidants in the body.

Free radicals are highly reactive and unstable atoms with the unpaired electron on the outer ring of the molecules, therefore, in order to become stable, they must donate or steal an electron from other stable molecules, leading to chain activity that can not be stopped until they are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

There are many factors associated with the production of free radicals, including the food we eat, the medicines we take, the air we breathe, and the water we drink.

In other words, free radicals can be generated by alcohol, tobacco smoke, pesticides, and air pollutants.

Antioxidants are stable atoms that inhibit oxidation caused by free radicals.

Some researchers suggested the prolonged presence of oxidative stress can cause damage to the cells, proteins, and alteration of DNA, leading to chronic diseases.

Dr. Eiichiro Ichiishi and colleagues in the concern of the effects of oxidative stress on the risks of diseases showed that oxidative stress not only has a strong implication in the development of diseases but also affects the outcome throughout the course of organ transplantation.
Additionally, the team wrote, "Kidney ischemia/reperfusion injury emerges in various clinical settings as a great problem complicating the course and outcome".

These results indicated the important roles of antioxidants which inhibited the oxidative stress before they can cause a wide range of damage to the human body.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find the best possible antioxidative stress natural ingredient or whole food, researchers examined the protective effects of ginger (Zingiber officinale Roscoe) extract on IL-1β-mediated oxidative stress and mitochondrial apoptosis in C28I2 human chondrocytes.
The cells were pretreated with 5 and 25 μg/mL ginger extract for 24 h, followed by incubation with IL-1β (10 ng/mL) for 24 h.

At the end of the study, ginger extract demonstrated a significant effect in the inhibition of IL-1β-induced intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and lipid peroxidation.

Ginger extract pretreatment also remarkably increased the gene expression of antioxidant enzymes.

The elevated levels of the Bax/Bcl-2 ratio and caspase-3 involved cell apoptosis were also normalized by the application of ginger extract.

The finding clearly indicated ginger extract could considerably reduce IL-1β-induced oxidative stress and consequent mitochondrial apoptosis as the major mechanisms of chondrocyte cell death and the efficacy was attributed to its antioxidant activity.

In pulmonary abnormalities tested mice induced by chronic ethanol exposure, researchers evaluated whether ginger extract mitigated pulmonary abnormalities induced by ethanol in rats.

The study included male Wistar rats divided into the control group, the ethanol group, and the ethanol plus ginger extract group.

The ethanol group after six-week of treatments increased the proliferation of lung cells, and induced fibrosis, inflammation, and leukocyte infiltration.


The levels of -hydroxydeoxyguanosine, NADPH oxidase, and oxidized low-density lipoprotein were also found to increase substantially in the ethanol-treated group.

Application of ginger extract normalized such changes by inhibiting the oxidative DNA damage and oxidative stress.

Taken altogether, ginger extract may be considered a natural antioxidative stress ingredient by enhancing the production of antioxidants and protecting the body against inflammation.
