Fennel may have a potential and positive effect on the improvement of cardiovascular activity, some scientists suggested.
The results of vascular and cardiovascular protective effects were reported by a number of universities including Birzeit University and published in online medical literature.
Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...
In the study to investigate the vascular effects of aqueous extracts of Foeniculum vulgare leaves in pentobarbital-anesthetized rats, researchers found that intravenous administration of the lyophilized boiled water extract exerted a significant dose-related reduction in arterial blood pressure, without affecting the heart rate or respiratory rate in compared to histamine antagonists.
However, the application of non-boiled aqueous extract showed very little hypotensive activity.
In contrast to the conventional medicine histamine antagonists, the hypotensive effect of the boiling water extract appeared not to be mediated by adrenergic, muscarinic, ganglionic, or serotonergic receptors.

Furthermore, in the examine the cardiovascular effect of the main component of the oil, anethole isolated from tested guinea pig fennel oil in inhibited arachidonic acid, collagen-, ADP- and U46619-induced aggregation, researchers found that application of anethole displayed comparable NO-independent vasorelaxant activity at antiplatelet concentrations.
Anethole also prevented thrombin-induced clot retraction at concentrations similar to fennel oil in comparison to U46619-induced aggregation (IC(50) from 4 to 147 microg ml(-1)). These results were confirmed in tested mice with the application of F. vulgare essential oil and anethole in a subacute treatment of 30 mg kg(-1)day(-1) for 5 days.
F. vulgare essential oil and anethole also showed significant antithrombotic activity in preventing paralysis induced by collagen-epinephrine intravenous injection with 70% and 83% protection, respectively.
In the rat model, both F. vulgare essential oil and anethole (100 mg kg(-1) oral administration) provided significant protection against ethanol-induced gastric lesions.
After taking into account other co and confounders, together with the collected information Dr. Tognolini M, the lead author said, " F. vulgare essential oil, and its main component anethole, a safe antithrombotic activity that seems due to their broad-spectrum antiplatelet activity, clot destabilizing effect, and vasorelaxant action".
Further to reassess other cardiovascular activity of Foeniculum vulgare L, researchers at the UFR Physiologie-Pharmacologie, launched an investigation to compare the effects of Marrubium vulgare L. and Foeniculum vulgare L. in spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR).
Interestingly, the oral application of Foeniculum extract exerted lowered the systolic blood pressure of SHR without induced change of normotensive Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY).
These results were probably associated with the function of the Foeniculum in increased water, sodium, and potassium excretion.
More importantly, Foeniculum extracts hypertensive efficacy was decreased substantially in rats and mice presented with N-nitro-L-arginine.
The results indicated that fennel demonstrated vascular protective activity as a diuretic and a natriuretic.
Taken together, Fennel and its essential oil and bioactive compound anethole may be considered a function substance in promoting cardiovascular and vascular activity, particularly in animal models with a high risk of cardiovascular disease.
Intake of fennel extract should be taken with extreme care as overdoses may induce liver toxicity.

The Effects of #Artichoke Activities in the Promotion of Bowel Health, Researchers Suggest
By Kyle J. Norton
Bowel problems may be a condition associated with some underlying diseases or syndrome including bowel incontinence, IBS, Colitis, Crohn's, constipation, or other bowel conditions.
Bowel problems can be cured if the causes of the problem are found.
The most common syndrome that does not associate with the underlying disease is constipation, a condition that affects bowel movements.
According to the statistics in the US, constipation affects approximately 2% of the population and the condition is more common in women than men.
Patients with constipation may experience symptoms of abdominal pain, bloating, and feeling of not completely passed the bowel movement.
Chronic constipation is one of the common causes of hemorrhoids, anal fissure or fecal impaction.
Conventionally, constipation in most cases is treated by the use of a laxative. However long-term use of laxatives may induce diarrhea, intestinal obstruction, and particularly unbalanced levels of salts and minerals in your body.
Therefore, if you currently use one of the over-counter laxatives for the treatment of constipation, please make you know all the side effects for preventive measures.
Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.
The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.
On finding a natural compound with bowel health promotion activity, researchers compared the effects of probiotic-enriched artichokes on the treatment of the symptom profile and short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production in constipated subjects with ordinary artichokes.
20 chronically constipated participants including 3 males and 17 female have selected to a double-blind method and a computer-generated randomization list.
Each patient consumed 180 g per day of ordinary artichokes or artichokes enriched with Lactobacillus paracasei IMPC 2.1 for 15 days.
According to the returned questionnaires, 80% of patients preferred probiotic-enriched artichokes compared to ordinary ones.
The satisfactory relief of symptoms was significantly higher in the probiotic-enriched artichoke compared to ordinary ones.
According to the Bristol stool scale in the measurement of fecal retention was lower in the probiotic-enriched artichokes compared to higher in the artichoke group seconded to the control.
GSRS (Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale) of constipation was significantly lower in the probiotic group compared with the baseline.
Furthermore, the short-chain fatty acid (SCFA) production and propionic acid were significantly higher in the probiotic group compared with the baseline.
In order to reveal more information on artichokes in the promotion of bowel health, researchers investigated the chemical compounds inulin and oligofructose, a class of fructans found in the Jerusalem artichoke.
Injection of inulin and oligofructose was found to stimulate the immune system of the body, decrease the pathogenic bacteria in the intestine, and relieve constipation.
Furthermore, inulin and oligofructose also displayed significant effects in the promotion of bowel health by protecting the colon against colon cancer.
Taken altogether, artichoke, particularly Jerusalem artichoke alone or combined with probiotics may be considered functional remedies for the improvement of bowel health, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Mushroom is a standard name for white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source, It is a genus A. Muscaria and belongs to the family Amanitaceae and has been cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.
Chemical constituents
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil and D-mannitol(a).
The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases. The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections. Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play an important role in helping the immune system defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.
In a number of studies, Mushrooms have been shown to enhance the immune response. according to Jean Mayer USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, white button mushrooms showed to enhance both innate and T cell-mediated immunity leading to more efficient surveillance and defense mechanism against microbial invasion and tumor development, through the promotion of DC maturation and enhance their antigen-presenting function. #Healthyfood #Onion in the Inhibition of the Risk of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Find
By Kyle J. Norton
Colorectal Cancer is a medical condition caused by cell growth disorderly in the tissues of the colon or rectum.
According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.
Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.
Colorectal cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing cancer with a tendency that is easy to predict. It is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
Colorectal cancer is cancer that arises in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectal tissue before penetrating into deeper layers and colonizing the parts of organs.
At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can also travel a distance away from either the colon or rectum to infect other healthy tissues to induce secondary metastasis through blood and fluid circulation.
Most patients with colorectal cancer are asymptomatic at an early stage. However, at the advanced stage patients might experience symptoms of changes in bowel habits, narrow stools, constipation, diarrhea, irritable bowel syndrome, intermittent, ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, diverticulosis, peptic ulcer disease, abdominal pain, accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.
The most common types of colorectal cancer are
*Adenocarcinomas
Most colorectal cancers are adenocarcinomas, originating in epithelium tissues, including the surface layer of skin, glands, and their tissues that line the cavities and organs of the body.
* Squamous cell cancers
Squamous cells are the skin-like cells that make up the bowel lining together with the gland cells. Squamous cell cancers are rare with a risk of 25 per 100000.
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
With an aim to find a natural compound for the treatment of colorectal cancer, researchers examined the epidemiological studies of onion and garlic in vitro and in vivo.
Epidemiologically
* Onion intake was associated with decreased risk of colorectal cancer (p-trend <0.0001) compared to non-consumers of onion regardless of the levels.
* Risk of colorectal cancer was significantly reduced with the relative odds ratio risk of.44 in people who have the highest of 4 categories of onion consumption (≥7 servings per week).
* People who were in the intermediate and high garlic use groups have a decreased risk of colorectal cancer with ORs of 0.88 and 0.74, respectively, compared to low or no use.
* In 562 cases and 5932 controls from subjects in the Prostate, Lung, Colorectal, and Ovarian Cancer Screening Trial, after assessing the onion and garlic intake collectively for the 12 months prior to screening using a food frequency questionnaire, researchers found that the fifth quintile of garlic/onion intake has an ORs of colorectal adenoma of 0.87 compared to the lowest quintile.
Taken altogether, onion may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset #Glioma by Reducing the expression of #OxidativeStress, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
A glioma is a type of tumor that starts in the glial cells of the brain or the spine.
Glioma cells can be classified into
* Astrocytomas are a type of brain cancer that originated in a particular kind of glial cell, star-shaped brain cells in the cerebrum called astrocytes.
* Ependymomas, are a type of cancer that grows in your brain or any part of the spine, including your neck and upper and lower back.
* Oligodendrogliomas are a type of glioma that starts in glial cells called oligodendrocytes.
Primary glioblastoma is one of the most aggressive cancers that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.
According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.
In the US, the median age of glioblastoma diagnosed is 64 years and the incidence of the disease onset is 1.6 times higher in males compared to females.
Furthermore, the condition is 2 times higher in Caucasians compared to Africans and Afro-Americans.
Because of the rapid growth, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience sudden brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, severe headaches, and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.
Conventionally, radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.
The causes of glioblastoma are not identified. However, the increase in age and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors found in patients with the disease.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the inhibition of brain tumors researchers examined the combined active ingredients of Chinese (Helicteres angustifolia) and Indian (Withaniasomnifera) ginsengs effects on glial differentiation potentials.
Based on the tested analysis, the novel combination of Cuc and Wi-N, CucWi-N, showed a significant activity to protect the neuron cells against an oxidative stress-induced decrease in DNA damage.
In rat glioblastoma cells, CucWi-N exerted the glial differentiation potential and induced differentiation phenotype.
Proteins are associated with neuron growth and development and a key role in glial differentiation. such as GAP43, MAP2, and GFAP were exhibited by the injection of the combination.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "These data demonstrate anti-stress and glial differentiation potential of CucWi-N (a novel combination of Cuc and Wi-N) that could be recruited in nutraceutical and pharmaceutical avenues and hence warrant further evaluation and mechanistic studies.".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb that reduces the risk of brain tumors, pending the result of a larger sample size and multicenter study

#Healthyfood #Tomatoes Protect the Lung by Inhibiting the Overexpression of Oxidative Stress, According to Researchers
By Kyle J. Norton
Pulmonary oxidative stress is a condition of oxidative stress in the lung.
The lung is a breathing organ containing a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) by taking oxygen to the blood vessels and then passing them to all parts of our body.
Furthermore, the lung also exhales the waste product called carbon dioxide, through breathing.
Oxidative stress is a result of an imbalance of the levels of free radicals compared to the antioxidant enzymes in the body.
Oxidative stress is either expressed by overexpression of free radicals or reduced levels of antioxidants or both.
Free radicals can be everywhere in the environment such as the air we breathe, and the foods we eat. they can also be produced by cells' metabolism in the body.
Believe it or not, free radicals in moderate amounts are necessary for our body to function, including NO for muscle relaxation.
Epidemiologically, oxidative stress has been found to induce lipid and protein oxidation and cell DNA damage.
According to the free radical theory, aging posits caused by the accumulation of damage inflicted by reactive oxygen species (ROS) associated with various chronic diseases such as atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke.
In the lung, oxidative stress also was shown to elevate the risk of the pathogenesis of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
Tomato is a red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a natural and potential whole food for the treatment of diseases associated with pulmonary oxidative stress, researchers investigated dietary supplementation with a known source of antioxidants (tomato juice, TJ) in the protection of the lung from injury caused by breathing hyperoxic gas.
The study included the examination of the results from the selected neonatal mice (C57BL6/J) who breathed either 65% O2 (hyperoxia) or room air from birth until postnatal day 7 (P7d).
At P56d, TJ protects the lung cell integrity and viability by increasing the levels of total antioxidant capacity (TAC), decreasing oxidative stress, and reversing the hyperoxia-induced increase in bronchiolar smooth muscle.
Furthermore, injection of TJ alone also decreased the protein involved in the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.
In hyperoxia, TJ increased TNF-α expression and did not alter the hyperoxia-induced increase in leukocyte numbers.
In other words, TJ protects the lung against oxidative stress by inhibiting and exhibiting certain proteins associated with proinflammation without increasing the production of immune white blood cells via its pulmonary antioxidants.
Based on these results, Dr. Bouch S, the lead scientist said, "TJ supplementation during and after neonatal exposure to hyperoxia protects the lung from some but not all aspects of hyperoxia-induced injury".
In other to reveal additional information about tomato anti-pulmonary oxidative stress effect, researchers examined the bioactive compound lycopene extracted from tomatoes in pulmonary fibrosis (PF) in an animal model.
The study included 60 Sprague-Dawley rats induced pulmonary fibrosis (PF) by BLM randomly divided into 3 groups of 20 rats each for a normal control group (group C), BLM-treated group (group M), and lycopene + BLM-treated group (group L).
Additionally, the rats in groups M and L were subjected to intratracheal instillation of BLM to induce PF; group C served as a sham control (intratracheal instillation of normal saline). Lycopene diluted with olive oil was administered at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight once a day in group L after BLM instillation, and groups C and M were treated with the same amounts of olive oil.
The lung coefficients in group L treated with lycopene were reduced (day 14, P < .01) as well as the extent of alveolitis (days 7 and 14, P < .05) and PF (day 14 and 28, P < .05) compared with group M.
The lycopene-treated group also showed significantly reduced levels of proteins associated with the immune system response against the acute phase of infection.
Furthermore, lycopene levels of oxidative stress markers in the lung were observed by the decreased levels of malondialdehyde plasma.
In other words, lycopene protected the lung of the tested rat by reducing oxidative stress via the stimulation of the production of antioxidant enzymes.
Taken altogether, tomatoes processed with a high amount of bioactive compound lycopene may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with pulmonary oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Healthyfood #Lycopene Inhibits the Overespession of Oxidative Stress, According to Studies
By Kyle J. Norton
Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by overexpression of free radicals in the body.
In other words, oxidative stress is a result of the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants caused by abundant free radicals and low levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.
A free radical is an unstable atom with a single electron on the outermost ring. Given to its nature, free radical readily donate or intercept an electron from another atom, leading to a chain of the free radical cascade that cannot be stopped until all single electron is paired or inhibited by antioxidants.
The antioxidant is a stable atom with a function to inhibit oxidation, comes either from dietary sources or produced by the body.
Contrast to general belief, free radical is also needed in moderated amount for the function of the heart muscle to pump blood such as NO for vasodilation and increasing blood flow.
According to studies, in cancer, oxidative stress has been found to induce cytotoxicity used in chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer by killing cancer cells.
However, in a healthy person, oxidative stress is harmful because it not only induces cells' lipid and protein oxidation but also causes the change of cell DNA, leading to diseases associated with oxidative stress including cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Ozone, certain pesticides, and cleaners, cigarette smoke, radiation, and pollution are some of the risk factors associated with the increased risk of oxidative stress.
Based on the oxidative stress theory of aging oxidative stress, oxidative stress is also the main culprit contributing to aging in humans.
Dr. Ilaria Liguori, the lead scientist said, "Aging is a process characterized by the progressive loss of tissue and organ function. The oxidative stress theory of aging is based on the hypothesis that age-associated functional losses are due to the accumulation of RONS-induced damages".
Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, and belongs to the family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.
With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress researchers examined the efficacy of lycopene a carotenoid commonly found in tomatoes and tomato products.
In a total of 23 healthy postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, were provided blood samples at baseline and following a one-month lycopene-depletion period according to the St. Michael's Hospital, Toronto, ON, Canada. PARTICIPANTS AND STUDY DESIGN.
Compared to the blood sample before and after experiment samples, a one-month lycopene-depletion period diet showed a significantly decreased antioxidant profile including serum lycopene, lutein/zeaxanthin and glutathione peroxidase (GPx).
Furthermore, the diet also depressed levels of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase (SOD), and catalase (CAT), significantly in the participants while increasing levels of lipid and protein oxidation.
In other words, tomatoes restrictive diet increased the risk of diseases associated with oxidative stress in postmenopausal women due to the increase of ROS and depletion of antioxidants in the tissues.
In order to reveal more information about the tomato effect against oxidative stress, researchers conducted a study to determine whether lycopene would act as an antioxidant to decrease oxidative stress parameters.
The study included a total of 60 postmenopausal women, 50-60 years old, following a 1-month washout without lycopene consumption,.
After a month, the participants were randomly divided into groups with 15 members each consuming either : (1) regular tomato juice, (2) lycopene-rich tomato juice, (3) tomato Lyc-O-Mato lycopene capsules, or (4) placebo capsules, twice daily for total lycopene intakes of 30, 70, 30, and 0 mg/day respectively for 4 months.
According to the tested assays, for 4 months significantly increased serum lycopene compared to placebo.
Moreover, the total serum antioxidant capacity (TAC) and decreasing lipid and protein peroxidation were found to increase substantially in the groups treated with consumed juice or lycopene capsules compared to the placebo group.
Taken altogether, tomatoes and its major bioactive compound lycopene may be considered remedies for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
