Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 are considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were heavy, and over 650 million were obese worldwide.

The most common causes of obesity are associated with an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods and red meat, and physical inactivity.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with the development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition, and use of certain medications that can cause weight gains or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015, compared to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

On another hand, stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.

Dr. Luma Akil, the lead scientist in the investigation of the risk of CVD in obese wrote, "Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity. In the present study, the associations between the increase in body mass index (BMI) and the increasing rates of CVD and high blood pressure (HBP)".

And, " Data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were obtained and analyzed for obesity rates, percent of myocardial infarction, stroke, and HBP from 2005–2009".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk of CVD is substantially higher compared to non-obese individuals

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae, and is native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent whole food that processes anti-anti-obesity activity, researchers examined the effect of edible dry bean consumption (Phaseolus vulgaris L. including green beans) modulating diet-induced obesity in rats and mice.

Sprague-Dawley rats and a diet-induced obesity model in C57Bl/6 mice included in the vivo suggested, cooked dry beans showed a positive modulation of plasma lipids and hepatic proteins that involves in lipid biosynthesis.

Taken altogether, green beans or other dried beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

The cardioprotective effect is an action including the use of substances such as herbal medicine for the prevention of heart damage.

In other words, substances that processed the activity to protect the heart's functioning are considered heart-protective agents.

Cardiovascular disease is a disease associated with blood vessels and the heart. Plaque accumulated on the wall of the artery that causes blockage and reduced blood flow to the heart has been found to induce CVD in many instances, depending on the affected location.

For example, reduced blood flow to the brain can lead to stroke involved in the death of neurons and reduced oxygen-rich blood flow can lead to heart disease involved in heart muscle damage.

In the Western world, due to the promotion of a high fat diet-induced over 68% of the overweight and obese population in the US, maybe the culprit that causes the rise of cardiovascular disease in recent years.

Dr. Frank M. Sacks, the lead scientist wrote, " Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the leading global cause of death, accounting for 17.3 million deaths per year. Preventive treatment that reduces CVD by even a small percentage can substantially reduce, nationally and globally, the number of people who develop CVD and the costs of caring for them".

And, "This American Heart Association presidential advisory on dietary fats and CVD reviews and discusses the scientific evidence, including the most recent studies, on the effects of dietary saturated fat intake and its replacement by other types of fats and carbohydrates on CVD".

The findings strongly suggested following a healthy diet with a higher amount of fruits and vegetables that replace the harmful fats and carbohydrates with moderate exercise, cardiovascular disease is preventable.

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

On finding a natural ingredient that processes cardioprotective properties, researchers examined the synthetic form of S-ally-mercapto captopril (CPSSA), a new stable synthetic compound produced by a chemical reaction between allicin and the angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor captopril.

In the fructose-induced metabolic syndrome rat model, alliin at 8 mg/kg-day exerted a significant cardioprotective effect by reducing insulin, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.


However, the injection of the same dose had only a slight effect on SBP compared to Captopril (50mg/(kg day)) with only an improvement of blood pressure and homocysteine.

Compared to the treatment with a low dose of CPSSA (5mg/(kg day)) that lowered SBP but did not improve any other measured parameter, a higher dose (50mg/(kg day)) showed a significantly decreased blood pressure, triglycerides, and homocysteine concentrations.

In other words, alliin protected the cardiovascular system in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the combined molecule CPSSA integrates the anti-hypertensive, lipid-lowering, and homocysteine-reducing effects of both allicin and captopril, making it a potential cardiovascular protective agent".

In order to know more information about alliin cardioprotective activity, researchers looked into eval the capacity of Allium ursinum (wild garlic) leaf lyophilisate (WGLL; alliin content: 0.261%) in cardiovascular damage in hypercholesterolemic rabbits.

The study included New Zealand rabbits divided into three groups: (i) cholesterol-free rabbit chow (control); (ii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol (hypercholesterolemic, HC); (iii) rabbit chow containing 2% cholesterol + 2% WGLL (hypercholesterolemic treated, HCT); for eight weeks.

According to the tested assays, WGLL treatment demonstrated a cardioprotective activity by mediating the increases in fractional shortening, right ventricular function, peak systolic velocity, tricuspidal annular systolic velocity in live animals.

The levels of a protein associated with the generation of antioxidants (heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1)) were increased in HO-1 protein accompanied by a decrease in superoxide dismutase 1(SOD1).

Furthermore, levels of plaques associated with atherosclerosis, plasma ApoB involved in levels of cholesterol, and the activity of LDH and CK (creatine kinase) were decreased in the treated rat's group.

Collectively, researchers said, "WGLL has complex cardioprotective effects, suggesting future strategies for its use in prevention and therapy for atherosclerotic disorders".

Taken altogether, alliin may be considered supplements for cardioprotection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) is a type of arthritis associated with inflammation that affects mostly the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many older adults.

Furthermore, the application of TRA also inhibited the enzymes involved in the productions of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs), like MMP-1 and MMP-3 in HFLS-RA in vitro, degradation of the normal tissues.

Moreover, the injection of TRA also blocked nuclear factor kappa B (NF-κB) activation via modulating inhibitors of kappa B (IκB), IκB kinase (IKK) in the control of cytokines production and cell survival and transforming growth factor-β-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) to prevent the accumulation of ROS, resulting in cell death and inflammation.

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Strawberries may be the next natural whole used as an inhibitor for the treatment of syndromes and diseases caused by overexpression of lipid peroxidation, the process in which free radicals steal molecules from the lipids of the cell membranes to induce cell damage.

Lipid peroxidation occurred naturally in a small amount in the body. In healthy individuals, the process generated by ROS is neutralized by antioxidants produced in the host tissue.

However, overexpression of lipid peroxidant can cause an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants, weakening the antioxidant enzyme in the induction of oxidative stress, a leading cause of a number of chronic diseases, including diabetes,.... and cardiovascular disease.

More precisely, overexpression of free radicals is characterized by inflammation or cell injury hydroxy octadecadienoic acids (HODEs), markers of disease involving oxidative stress of low-density lipoproteinomes (LDL) at 10-100 higher concentration in compared to LDL from healthy individuals.

Epidemiological studies also found that the effect of selected dietary factors plays an essential role of lipids in the induction of oxidative stress and antioxidant defenses. Increase intake of antioxidant vitamins C (ascorbic acid) and E (alpha-tocopherol) and the type of fatty acids (mono- and poly-unsaturated) may have a strong implication in reduced overexpression of lipid peroxidation.

Truly, lipid peroxidant is a double edge sword, on one hand, under normal conditions, it exerts physiological and protective functions as a signaling molecule stimulating gene expression and cell survival. And on the other hand, in the overexpression environment, the process plays a cytotoxic role in inhibiting gene expression and promoting cell death.


Cholesterol is needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat. However, too much of it can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

Furthermore, in the study of strawberry flavonoids in extortion of potent antioxidants and anti-inflammatory activity, researchers conducted a test of freeze-dried strawberry powder (FSP) properties of lowering fasting lipids and biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation at four weeks in compared to baseline.

In the total of 16 females enrolled in the study, 3 features of metabolic syndrome with waist circumference >35 inches, triglycerides > 150 mg/dL, fasting glucose > 100 mg/dL and < 126 mg/dL, HDL <50 mg/dL, or blood pressure >130/85 mm Hg).

Participants were given two cups of the strawberry drink daily for four weeks with each cup having 25 g FSP blended in water. Biomarkers of oxidative stress and inflammation were measured using ELISA techniques. Plasma ellagic acid was measured using HPLC-UV techniques.

At the end of the study, researchers found that
* Total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol levels were significantly lower at 4 weeks versus baseline (-5% and -6%, respectively, p < 0.05),

* Lipid peroxidation in the form of malondialdehyde and hydroxynonenal (-14%, p < 0.01) was also lower significantly.

* Interestingly, Oxidized-LDL showed a decreasing trend at 4 weeks

These results suggested that short-term supplementation of freeze-dried strawberries exerts hypocholesterolemic effects and decreases lipid peroxidation in women with metabolic syndrome.

Moreover, in the examine the effects of strawberry major phytochemicals on the radicals DPPH and OH with does from 50-100 μl extract in vitro, researchers showed that

A chemosensitivity assay is a test that measures the number of tumor cells killed by chemotherapy.
The aim of the test is to found the best chemo drugs for the treatment of cancer.

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of specific tissues and organs.

At the early stage due to the very small size of the tumor, most cancers are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, cancer not only can induce general symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomfort, unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss but also lead to specific symptoms, such as localized bleeding and pain, depending on the location of cancer.

Also, at this stage, primary cancer cells can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis through the circulation of blood and fluids.

Some cancers can be slow-growth, including prostate and colon cancer. Primary cancer at stage 0 and 1 may not induce any symptoms.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in the US 2019, approximately 1,762,450 new cancer cases will be diagnosed and 606,880 deaths are results of cancer.

Furthermore, in the age perspective, older adults although are accounted for only 8% of all cases diagnosed in the US, have a 17% mortality rate compared to other age groups.

As of today, researchers do not know the exact cause of cancer neither they know why people with the same health condition and family history, are susceptible to DNA alternation in facilitating the onset of cancer, while others do not.

The 5 years survival rate is totally depending on the stage of cancer diagnosed. The early diagnosed stage has the highest survival rate compared to other later stages.

Cisplatin is a chemotherapy drug given by Sclerotherapy used in conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers, including testicular cancer, ovarian cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer, bladder cancer, head and neck cancer, esophageal cancer, lung cancer, mesothelioma, brain tumors, and neuroblastoma.

Compared with the combinational treatment of CDDP and SFN, the nanoparticles were more effectively internalized and significantly reduced GSH content in breast cancer cells, observed by the increase of DNA-bound Pt and DNA damage-induced apoptosis.

In other words, the combination is more effective than the use of the chemo drug alone due to its ability to penetrate deeper into the cancer cells.

Furthermore, in an orthotopic breast cancer model, the nanoparticles achieved a significantly higher tumor accumulation by enhancing the permeability and retention of EPR-mediated tumor targeting and exhibited a more powerful antitumor activity.

The nano-enhanced chemotherapy also showed higher content of GSH in the liver cancer model.

Collectively, researchers said, "this sulforaphane-based nano strategy holds great promise to enhance the sensitivity and therapeutic efficacy of Pt-based chemotherapy

Taken altogether, broccoli processed with a high amount of sulforaphane used in a combination of chemo drugs may be considered adjunct therapy for the treatment of liver cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of sulforaphane in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cinnamon, a kitchen spice in many cultures, may have gained many believers, including medical professionals because of its anti-diabetic effect, through regulating the blood glucose levels in healthy and diabetic subjects. According to herbalists, intake of 1/4 tsp. in the morning and evening may reduce blood sugar significantly with little or no adverse effects.

The herb has been used in herbal and traditional medicine as an anti-fungal and bacteria level to improve the reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.(1).

According to the 2011 statistic from National Diabetes InformationClearinghouse (NDIC), among U.S. residents ages 65 years and older, 10.9 million, or 26.9 percent, had diabetes in 2010, about 215,000 people younger than 20 years had diabetes—type 1 or type 2—in the United States in 2010 and approximately, 1.9 million people ages 20 years or older were newly diagnosed with diabetes in 2010 in the United States.

In a total of 66 patients with type 2 diabetes study conducted by Xuhui District Central Hospital, showed a significant reduction of blood triglyceride levels in the low-dose group, after 3 months of oral administration(2)

Some researchers suggested that cinnamon extract may improve fasting blood glucose levels and glucose tolerance without altering insulin secretion, through lower triglyceride and increased liver glycogen content, and improved insulin action in liver tissues(3).

Dr. Kim SH and Dr. Choung SY. told PubMed "The effect of cinnamon significantly increases insulin sensitivity, reduces serum, and hepatic lipids, and improves hyperglycemia and hyperlipidemia possibly by regulating the PPAR(in the regulation of metabolism (carbohydrate, lipid, protein))-medicated glucose and lipid metabolism"(4)

In support of the above, chromium(Cr) and polyphenols found in cinnamon(Cinnamomum cassia) indicated an improvement of glucose, insulin, cholesterol, and HbA1c(a Glucose lab test) in patients with type 2 diabetes following Cr supplementation, in a double-blind placebo-controlled study(7).

Unfortunately, according to the Western University of Health Sciences, consumption of cinnamon is associated with a statistically significant decrease in levels of fasting plasma glucose but insisted that a high degree of heterogeneity may limit the ability to apply these results to patient care, due to the unclear preferred dose and duration of therapy(5)

In a randomized clinical trial in which 70 Patients with type II diabetes were assigned randomly to two groups (35 in cinnamon and 35 in the placebo group the testing of the effect of cinnamon on the glucose level in the blood, indicated an insignificant effect of using cinnamon on glucose level of diabetic patients and the herb should not be recommended to patients with type II diabetes depending on further studies(6).

Taken altogether, cinnamon in a low dose may be effective in controlling the levels of blood glucose in patients with diabetes without altering the insulin level. According to DR. Georgakopoulou EA., oral intake of Cinnamon may cause Stomatitis(7), and a burning sensation in the mouth with a large amount. Traditional Chinese medicine also insisted that an Overdose of cinnamon can be toxic and damage to the liver(1).

Cervical cancer is a malignant neoplasm of the cervix uteri or cervical area caused by abnormal cells growth with alternation of cells DNA.

Researchers do not know what causes cervical cancer. Most cases of cervical cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the cervix. At this stage, most women with cervical cancer do not experience any symptoms.

At the advanced stage, invasive cancer can induce symptoms of abnormal bleeding, pain during sexual intercourse, increased vaginal discharge. If the tumor has suppressed the nearby nerve cells, cervical cancer can also cause localized severe pain.

According to the American Cancer Society's, in 2014, 12,360 new cases of invasive cervical cancer will be diagnosed with the death of 4,020 patients.

Epidemiological also suggested that HPV infection, sexual activity, smoking, and giving birth many times. Infection with the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV, a history of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and long-term use of oral contraceptives are some prevalent risk factors for cervical cancer.
