#Greentea's #Theanine Reduces the Onset of Manic and Depressive Episodes in #BipolarDisorder, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Green tea's major bioactive theanine may have a potential and positive effect in blocking the onset of bipolar disorder, some scientists suggested.

Bipolar disorder is a condition of brain disorder characterized by unusual shifting mood, energy, and activity levels, and interfering the brain function in carrying out day-to-day tasks.

According to the National Institute of Mental Health, the conditions can be classified in to
* Bipolar I disorder with severe manic episodes last at least 7 days, most people with bipolar I disorder needs immediate hospital care.

* Bipolar II disorder is characterized by a pattern of depressive episodes and hypomanic episodes.

* Cyclothymic disorder also known as cyclothymia is a condition with numerous periods of hypomanic and depressive symptoms that last for at least 2 years.

*4. Other conditions that do not match the 3 above.

Dr. Steve Bressert, Ph.D. in the article Manic Episode Symptoms, wrote, "The symptoms of mania include: elevated mood, inflated self-esteem, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, difficulty maintaining attention, increase in goal-directed activity, and excessive involvement in pleasurable activities" compared to the depressive episode that characterizes with low mood and other depression symptoms that lasts for 2 weeks or more. In some cases, a depressive episode may last several weeks or months at a time.

Green tea is a precious drink that processes a number of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world.

In the investigation to determine whether theanine (n-ethylglutamic acid), a non-proteinaceous amino acid component of green and black teas has any protective effects on the central nervous system, researchers found that
* Theanine exerts a variety of neurophysiological and pharmacological effects through crossing the blood-brain barrier.

* Application of theanine also demonstrates the anxiolytic and calming effect by up-regulation of inhibitory neurotransmitters and possible modulation of serotonin and dopamine in selected areas and increasing levels of the brain-derived neurotrophic factor.

* The bioactive compound also displays a neuroprotective effect following cerebral infarct and injury,

* Theanine also elicits improvements in cognitive function including learning and memory,

* Interestingly, theanine administration elicits selective changes in alpha brain wave activity with concomitant increases in selective attention during the execution of mental tasks and inhibits depression.

These results suggested that theanine can be considered a therapeutic role in the treatment of some psychiatric disorders such as anxiety disorders, panic disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and bipolar disorder.

Additionally, in a study by Portland VA Medical Center of adults with schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder who were maintained on antipsychotic and other psychotropic medications randomized to supplemental EGCG or placebo including a total of 34 participants (17 EGCG, 17 placebo) and 25 participants (14 EGCG, 11 placebo), researchers showed that

* Both treatment groups showed significant reductions in psychotic, depressive, and anxiety symptoms from baseline to the end of treatment.

* However, EGCG did not significantly affect psychiatric symptoms or inflammatory markers, as compared with placebo.

* Adverse effects were mild and comparable between groups.

The finding indicated that green tea extract EGCG exerts an insignificant effect on psychiatric symptoms in patients with bipolar disorder compared to Theanine, another major ingredient in green and black tea.

Taken together, green and black tea major bioactive theanine may be considered a secondary therapy in protecting the brain against manic and depressive episodes in patients with bipolar disorder.

#Herbal #Catsclaw in the Inhibition of the Onset of #InflammatoryDiseases, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Cat's claw found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, is a genus Uncaria, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, used in traditional medicine for over two thousand years as a tonic, contraceptive, anti-inflammatory, and infectious agent, and to treat diarrhea, rheumatic disorders, acne, diabetes, cancer and diseases of the urinary tract, etc...

The chemical constituents of Cat's claw include ajmalicine, akuammigine, campesterol, catechin, carboxyl alkyl esters, chlorogenic acid, cinchonain, corynantheine, corynoxeine, daucosterol, epicatechin, harman, hirsuteine, hirsutine, iso-pteropodine, etc.

Inflammatory diseases are disorders and conditions caused by inflammation. Cat's claw may be the next generation of the medical plant for the treatment of inflammation against various diseases. According to the study by Case Western Reserve University, Uncaria tomentosa exhibited high levels of anti-inflammatory effects through the interference of the pro-inflammatory expression.

Mitraphylline (MTP), the major pentacyclic oxindole alkaloid presented in Uncaria tomentosa, elicited an anti-inflammatory response that modulates neutrophil activation contributing to the attenuation of inflammatory episodes.

Furthermore, the ingredient, Mitraphylline (MTP) also showed a direct effect on the immune system by reducing almost 40% of the production of interleukin 4 (IL-4) and inhibiting around 50% of the release of interleukins.

Indenture Stomatitis, a chronic oral disease that affects denture wearers is caused by Candida Albicans in inducing inflammation. Topical application of a gel of 2% U. tomentosa three times a day for 1 week, cat' claw significantly reduced signs of the disease, after 1 week of treatment.

In fact, the anti-inflammatory properties may also result from their ability to inhibit TNF-alpha, a central regulator of inflammation, and to lesser production of PGE2, a principal mediator of inflammation in disease production.

The effects of a cat's claw in inhibited inflammatory diseases may result from its binding to proinflammatory cytokines and pathways. The use of the medical plant should be only prescribed by herbal for safety purposes.

#Healthyfood #Onion Gobbles Up #ColonCancer Cells, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon tissue.
The colon formed as a part of the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them are reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Most cases of colon cancer start with the alternation of cells' DNA on the surface of the inner lining of colon tissue before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor.

Colon cancer is relatively very common, slowly growing, and progressing cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, colorectal cancer including colon and rectal cancer is the third most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States.

In 2019, 101,420 people in the US will be diagnosed with colon cancer.
The exact causes of colon cancer are unknown. However, out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the disease, inherited syndromes may have a strong implication involved in cancer development, including
* Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP):
Familial adenomatous polyposis is an inherited condition in which numbers of benign polyps form mainly in the lining of the large intestine, but they can become malignant due to the mutations in the APC gene inherited from the parents.

* Hereditary non-polyposis colon cancer (HNPCC)
HNPCC, also known as Lynch syndrome. HNPCC) increases the risk of developing colon cancer due to the mutation of genes in repairing DNA damage.

*Turcot syndrome
Turcot syndrome is also a rare inherited condition in which cells become abnormal and form multiple adenomatous colon polyps and eventually turn malignant.

* Peutz-Jeghers syndrome
Peutz-Jeghers syndrome is an autosomal dominant genetic disease with the condition of the development of benign hamartomatous polyps in the gastrointestinal tract and hyperpigmented macules on the lips and oral mucosa due to mutations in the gene STK1.

* MUTYH-associated polyposis
MUTYH is a human gene encoding a DNA glycosylase. Mutations in the gene MUTYH increase the risk of developing colon polyps which eventually become cancerous if the polyps are not removed.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers examined the effects of fisetin, a natural compound found in fruits and vegetables such as strawberries, apples, cucumbers, and onions in HT-29 colon cancer cells.

According to the tested assays, at the ranges from 20-60 micromol/l, Fisetin induced colon cancer cell apoptosis by inhibiting the expression of proteins associated with the antiapoptosis(Bcl-xL and Bcl-2) and promoting the expression of proteins (Bak and Bim) involved in pro-apoptosis.

More precisely, fisetin caused an increase in the protein levels associated with apoptosis and an increase of proteins involved in the suppression of fisetin-induced apoptosis.

The inhibition of cancer cell death was also observed by the effect of Fisetin on the enhanced permeability of the mitochondrial membrane and induced the release of cytochrome c.

Moreover, a gene that suppressed the cancer cell initiation, progression, and proliferation such as p53 was also exhibited by Fisetin accompanied by activating the proteins (cleavage of poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) associated with cell death programming.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "fisetin induces apoptosis in HCT-116 cells via the activation of the death receptor- and mitochondrial-dependent pathway and subsequent activation of the caspase cascade".

Taken altogether, onion used alone or combined with other remedies may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colon cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Cranberry Reduces the Risk of CVD by Decreasing Homocysteine and Increasing Adiponectin Levels in Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Homocysteine produced in the bloodstream is a common amino acid in the blood from eating meat.
High levels of homocysteine in the blood have been found to increase the risk of heart disease and stroke.

In other words, homocysteine-induced atherosclerosis by causing arterial damage, leading to the accumulation and formation of plaque and blood clots.

Believe it or not, overexpression of homocysteine accompanied by the low levels of vitamins B6, B12, and folate, also have been found in some patients with renal disease.

Dr. Bradley A. Maron, the lead scientist in the examination of the disease associated with hyperhomocysteinemia wrote, "The unique biochemical profile of homocysteine is characterized by chemical reactivity supporting a wide range of molecular effects, and a tendency to promote oxidant stress-induced cellular toxicity".

And, "Numerous epidemiological reports have established hyperhomocysteinemia as an independent risk factor for cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, dementia-type disorders, and osteoporosis-associated fractures".

Adiponectin is a type of protein associated with the function that regulates glucose levels and fatty acid breakdown.

The protein also plays a critical role in the development of insulin resistance and atherosclerosis. Low levels of adiponectin levels increase the risk of insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes.

In type 2 diabetes, administration of adiponectin not lowers plasma glucose levels but also increases insulin sensitivity.

More precisely, in patients with type 2 diabetes, increased levels of adiponectin involved in the enhancement of insulin sensitivity were attributed to the increase of fatty acid oxidation and inhibition of hepatic glucose production.

Dr. Lihn AS in examing the effects of administration of adiponectin in type 2 diabetes wrote, "Adiponectin in addition to possible anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic effects appears to be an insulin enhancer, with potential as a new pharmacologic treatment modality of the metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for inhibiting cardiovascular risk factors, researchers examined the effects of cranberry juice concomitantly on homocysteine and adiponectin levels in patients with the Mets.

The study included a total of 36 individuals with the MetS divided into two groups: the control group (n 36) and the cranberry-treated group(n 20) received cranberry juice (0·7 liters/d) containing 0·4mg folic acid for 60 days.

According to tested analysis, the cranberry-treated group showed an increase in adiponectin involved in regulating glucose levels as well as fatty acid breakdown and a decrease in homocysteine associated with a risk for heart disease compared to baseline values and the controls.

However, the cranberry-treated group improved MetS without affecting the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-a, IL-1, and IL-6.

According to the measurement of oxidative stress, the cranberry-treated group also showed decreased lipoperoxidation and protein oxidation levels, compared to the control group.

The results strongly suggested that chronic consumption of cranberry juice for 60 d improves some cardiovascular risk factors.

Based on the findings, researchers concluded. "The present data reinforce the importance of the inverse association between homocysteine and adiponectin and the need for more specifically designed studies on MetS patients.".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of MetS, pending confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Fennel Improves Memory in All Aspects, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Intake of fennel daily and regularly may have a profound and positive effect in enhancing memory, some scientists suggested.

The human brain consists of billions of neurons, some of which were given a special function in storing the event from the past.

In other words, there is a faculty in the human brain in which the mind stores and remembers information.

There are 2 types of memory. Short-term memory (STM) is a temporary storage system that processes the working memory, reacting by taking into information that already happened in the past.

Long-term memories are information collected by the brain that can last for just a few days, or years. Some long-term memories are more important than others.

Memory loss occurs often in the aging population. It is a normal degeneration, however, we can’t take action to slow it down a little.

Some researchers suggested that a change in lifestyle, such as meditation and eating habits such as reduced intake of red meat which has been found to associate with lipid peroxidation can improve or slow down the risk of memory loss.

Dr. Xian Jiang, the lead author in the evaluation of the consumption of fruit and vegetables in the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia, wrote, "The meta-analysis showed that an increased consumption of fruit and vegetables was associated with a significant reduction in the risk of cognitive impairment and dementia (the leading cause of memory loss)".

Risks of cognitive impairment and dementia-inducing memory loss were reduced by approximately 13% for an increment of 100 g per day of fruit and vegetable consumption.

A study that examines the fennel-enhancing memory activity in an orogastric tube suggested that administration at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight, fennel displays a significant effect in enhancing short and long-term memory.

Scientists at the research center, after taking into account all factors, recommended that adding a portion of fennel to the daily diet may improve memory in all aspects.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

Herbal medicine has been used in traditional and herbal medicine, like warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

According to the observation of urinary levels of vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), daily administration of F. Vulgare extract (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg body weight) 1 h prior to the induction of stress, exerted significantly altered the stress in reducing central nervous system in the expression of stress hormone production from 395.79 to 347.12, 311.21 and 258.86 μg/kg, receptively.
In comparison to ascorbic acid, fennel extracts treated groups also exhibited potent antioxidant effects by inhibiting lipid peroxidation in both tested rats' liver and brain homogenates to a greater extent.

These results suggested that fennel extract may also improve brain function by reducing oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in the induction of neuron cells cytotoxicity and apoptosis in facilitating plagues accumulation in the neurons, the process has long been found to decrease long-term memory recalled.

In the same period, memory deficits induced by scopolamine (1mg/kg, i.p.) in rats were significantly reversed by F. Vulgare dose-dependently.

Dr. A. E. Bawazirand, the lead author of the research paper said, "F. Vulgare may be useful in the management of stress and stress-related disorders on account of its multiple actions such as anti-stress, memory-enhancing, and antioxidant effects".

Further analysis of the enhanced memory and intelligence of F. Vulgaris, an ayurvedic Rasayana (mixture) served to children as part of their food in Indian traditional medicine, scientists found that ingestion of whole plant extract at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg exhibits a strong memory-enhancing effect against scopolamine-induced amnesic rats.

Observed by the conditioned avoidance response (CAR) technique, the group treated with fennel extract of rats through gradually increased administration up to 95% over 7 to 12 days demonstrated a significant increase in percent avoidance due to information feedback from previous experience, compared to the control group.

Additionally, fennel extracts showed strong linearly and independently in memory recalled from tested rats.

As Animals received 200 mg/kg body weight of the extract took ten days, while groups treated with 100 and 50 mg/kg doses of the extract required eleven and twelve days, respectively, to reach the point of acquisition.

Importantly, during the period of the experiment, treated rats demonstrated significantly less amnesia, a partial or total loss of memory induced by scopolamine in comparison to the nontreatment group.

Continuously, fennel treatment also produced better retention and recovery of memory deficits in a dose-dependent manner than the vehicle-treated animals.

Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, the lead scientist said, "Recovery from scopolamine-induced amnesia in the extract-treated groups took 3–5 days when compared to the normal (control) group which took over 6 days".

Some researchers suggested that the neuro memory enhancement of fennel extracts may be attributed by the effective influence as a sedative and the herbal protective effects in the maintenance of brain tissue through directly increasing the total content of neurotransmitters in all the tested regions.

Finally, "Fennel is likely to be safe for use as a moderator and enhancer of the functions of the central nervous system by increasing the total content of neurotransmitters and also can be a protection against stress and stress-related diseases such as memory loss, because it contains high amounts of antioxidants", according to the study of "Foeniculum vulgare Mill: A Review of Its Botany, Phytochemistry, Pharmacology, Contemporary Application, and Toxicology" suggestion.

Taking together, Fennel whole plant and whole plant extracts may be considered as a function in improved memory in all aspects.

These results also reaffirmed the use of fennel as a brain enhancer product by traditional herbal medicine.

#Tomatoes Inhibit the Onset of #GastricCancer in Human Studies, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastric or stomach cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the stomach caused by the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cell on the surface of the stomach inner lining before penetrating into the deeper layers.

At the early stage, patients with gastric cancer are asymptomatic. However, at the advanced stage, gastric cancer can induce symptoms of indigestion or heartburn, stomach pain, discomfort in the abdomen particularly vomiting up solid food shortly after eating, change of bowel movement accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019 approximately 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Believe it or not, most cases of gastric cancer in the US are found in older adults. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68.

In other words, 6 of every 10 people diagnosed with stomach cancer each year are 65 or older.

Although there are many risk factors associated with gastric cancer including aging gender, ethnicity, medical condition such as lymphoma, and smoking,... some researchers suggested that certain diet that has large amounts of smoked foods, salted fish and meat, and pickled vegetables may have a strong effect in gastric cancer developing.

Dr. L T Ngoan, the lead scientist said, "During 139 390 person-year of follow-up of over 13 000 subjects, 116 died from stomach cancer. Using a Cox proportional hazards–regression analysis of relative risk (RR, 95% CI) controlling for age, sex, smoking, and other dietary factors, a significant decline was found with high consumption of green and yellow vegetables (RR=0.4, 95% CI=0.2–0.9)"

And, "The risk was significantly increased by the high consumption of processed meat (RR=2.7, 95% CI=1.0-7.4) and by the frequent use of cooking oil (RR=4.0, 95% CI=1.3-11.8). The high consumption of pickled food and traditional soups also increased risk, but not significantly. The findings suggest that a diet high in salt and low in vitamins may be associated with an increase in stomach cancer"

Tomato is red, edible fruit, genus Solanum, belonging to family Solanaceae, native to South America. Because of its health benefits, the tomato is grown worldwide for the commercial purpose
and often in the greenhouse.

On finding potential and natural compounds for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers examined the possible association between tomato product consumption and gastric cancer.

The review of MEDLINE and EMBASE and contacted authors to identify potential studies published from January 1966 to June 2012 was conducted by the Shanghai Tenth Peoples' Hospital, Tongji University included a total of 21 eligible studies satisfied the guideline and criteria.

According to the results, the consumption of large amounts of tomato products compared to the highest and lowest consumption groups showed a significantly reduced the risk for gastric cancer.

The OR ratio of lycopene consumption and serum lycopene was 0.88 and 0.79, respectively.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "Consumption of large amounts of tomato products is associated with a reduced risk of gastric cancer".

Furthermore, by examining the anticancer effect of Pectic-Oligosaccharide isolated from Sour Raw Tomato (SrTPOwith its bioavailability and structure elucidated from purified fraction (SrTPO1), scientists at the CSIR-Central Food Technological Research Institute showed that administration of SrTPO1 inhibited galectin-3 activity with MIC of 0.25 ug/mL (100 fold better than standard galactose), inhibited the growth of AGS cells (IC50 3.4μg/mL) and induced apoptosis (70% inhibition at 30μg/mL concentration) without affecting the normal cells.

Where galectin-3 expression is associated with the promotion of tumor progression and metastasis.

Taken altogether, tomatoes processed with a high amount of lycopene and Pectic-Oligosaccharide may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Herbal #Artichoke Exhibits #Antioxidant Activity Against Oxidative Stress, Researchers Reveal

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy that processed significant antioxidant activity against the onset and progression of oxidative stress-related diseases, according to studies.
Oxidative stress-related conditions are the diseases associated with cellular damage, including the alternation of cell DNA, and damage of lipids and proteins.

The list of chronic diseases caused by cell oxidation is very long, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, and stroke.

The most common causes of oxidative stress are overexpression of free radicals in the induction of a chain reaction.

Due to the unstable nature of free radicals with unpaired electrons in the outer ring, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept the electrons from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until the outring electron are either paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

In contrast to the general belief, the damage caused by free radicals is overly exaggerated, under normal conditions, free radicals produced by internal or external sources are needed by our body for cellular responses and immune function.

However, overexpression of free radicals also known as oxidative stress can be a danger to our health.

Oxidative stress can be acute or chronic. Acute oxidative stress caused by a sudden burst of free radicals due to stress or external sources, in most cases can be inhibited by increasing antioxidant enzymes in the lung.

Chronic oxidative stress is caused by the unbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by our bodies. The condition is either caused by over expression of free radicals, depletion of antioxidant enzymes, or both.

There are many risk factors that cause oxidative stress. However, in the concerns of the prevalence of chronic diseases associated with the Western diet, some researchers suggested that the link of oxidative diseases in the Western world may result from the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

Dr. Ildiko Erdelyi, the lead scientist said, "A Western-style diet (WD), defined by high-fat, low-calcium, and vitamin D content, is associated with increased risk of human colorectal cancer. Understanding molecular mechanisms altered by the WD is crucial to develop preventive and therapeutic strategies".

And, "consumption of a WD interferes with networks of related biological response pathways involving colonic lipid metabolism, oxidative stress, and the immune response".

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

Scientists on finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases examined the antioxidant activity of artichokes in the rat model.

Artichoke extracts showed good efficiency in the inhibition in vitro of LDL oxidation. Injection of artichoke extracts also increased the levels of antioxidant glutathione peroxidase against oxidative damage in the tested subjects compared to the control group.

Injection of artichoke extracts also inhibited the expression of a protein oxidation biomarker (2-Aminoadipic semialdehyde) compared to the control group.

In order to reveal more information about artichoke antioxidant activity, researchers examined the phenolic compound content and composition and the antioxidant activity of leaf parts [blades (SLB), petioles, and midribs (SPM)] from various Greek artichoke genotypes.

The leaf blades of most of the genotypes have a high content of flavonoids (mainly luteolin glycoside derivatives), which ranged between 49 and 78% of total phenolic compounds (TPC).

Petioles and midribs phenolic acids (mainly hydroxycinnamic acid derivatives) were the main phenolic compounds, ranging between 64 and 76% of TPC,

The antioxidant activity of blades was significantly higher than that of petiole and midribs for all the genotypes according to the tested assays.

The results of antioxidant differentiation suggested that artichoke leaves (blades, petioles, and midribs) show different bioactive compound profiles in stimulating the different levels of antioxidant properties.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases through its antioxidant activity, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.
