#Healthyfood #Strawberries In inhibting the Risk of #HeartDiseases, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Strawberry is a genius of Fragaria × ananassa and belongs to the family Rosaceae. They have been grown all over the world with a suitable climate for commercial profits and for health benefits.
Besides cancer, heart disease kills more than 2,000 Americans every day. Approximately 60 million Americans have heart disease. There are many causes of heart disease.

Most heart diseases are caused by high blood pressure contributes to the hardening of the arteries. High levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) build up in the arteries as a result of an uncontrolled diet with high levels of saturated fat and trans fat. All these add to the formation of atherosclerosis lesions and eventually arterial blockage or anything that serves to damage the inner lining of blood vessels and impedes the transportation of oxygen and nutrition to the heart.

The major chemical compounds include anthocyanin and ellagitannins and p-Hydroxybenzoic acid, p-coumaric acid, ellagic acid, cyanidin-3-glucoside, pelargonidin-3-glucoside, kaempferol, quercetin, and myricetin

Anthocyanin-rich foods, blueberries, and strawberries intake are found to be the potential in preventing myocardial infarction (MI) in young and middle-aged women, according to studies, as it is associated with a decreased risk of MI in comparison to those consuming >3 servings a week and those with lower intake.

In other studies, the water-soluble pigments, Anthocyanins display a wide range of biological activities including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and anti-carcinogenic activities and a variety of effects on blood vessels, platelets, and the risk of coronary heart diseases. In fact, Dietary intakes of flavanones, anthocyanidins, and certain foods rich in flavonoids were associated with reduced risk of death due to CHD, CVD, and all causes.

#GreenBean, The #Healthyfood in the Prevention of #CardiovascularDiseases (#CVD), Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle.
Depending on the types of blood vessel damage or blocked, and heart muscle damage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart or a stroke caused by reducing oxygen supply to the brain cells.

Heart disease is a class of conditions associated with blood vessels and heart muscle that affect heart functioning, including coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias); and heart defects.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in most cases associated with an inflammatory cholesterol-containing plaque in the arteries.

A stroke can be caused by reduced blood flow or small blood vessel bleeding, leading to the death of neurons that affect parts of the brain's functioning.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart affects more than 6.5 million Americans, a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the United States. In other words, every year, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US are caused by heart disease.

Believe it or not, every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

There are many prevalent factors associated with cardiovascular disease including family history, age ethnicity, gender, and medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure, and diabetes.

Some researchers suggested overconsumption of carbohydrates over the long term may be one major condition that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Norman J. Temple in the examination of the effect of fat, sugar, whole grains in the risk of heart disease wrote, " The evidence linking carbohydrate-rich foods with CHD has been steadily strengthening. Refined carbohydrates, especially sugar-sweetened beverages, increase the risk of CHD. Conversely, whole grains and cereal fiber are protective. An extra one or 2 servings per day of these foods increases or decreases risk by approximately 10% to 20%.".

In other words, the intake of a high amount of carbohydrates is associated with an increased risk of CVD.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 different species, belongs to the family Fabaceae, and is native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

In finding a portent compound for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers compared
the antithrombotic activity in participants in central Chile.

The study included extract samples of 19 fruits and 26 vegetables from the local diet. Prepared from each sample included an aqueous (juice or pressed solubles) and/or methanol-soluble fraction.

According to the results of differentiation, green beans and tomato extracts inhibited the platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner.

However, green beans and tomato extracts showed a lesser effect compared to the methanolic extracts of grapes on prolonged prothrombin time (PT), and diluted prothrombin time (dPT).

Moreover, extracts of raspberry are more effective in prolonged activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and fibrinolytic activity compared to the green beans extracts.

Taken altogether, green beans used combined with tomato may be considered a remedy for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Antioxidant #Cucurbitacin B (CuB) Isolated from #Cucumber (Cucumis sativus)Exhibits the Anti-#Melanoma Effects on Vitro, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Melanoma is a type of skin cancer associated with the alternation of DNA in the pigment-containing cells.
Melanin is a pigment that gives skin, hair, and eyes their color.

Malignant melanin cells (melanocytes) lead to the formation of moles on the skin usually brown or pink color.

Skin is the largest organ in the body which not only processes a unique function by protecting our body through its covering but also is a third detoxed organ that eliminates toxins from our body besides the kidney and liver.

Epidemiologically, certain risk factors such as exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UVR), genetic preposition such as CDKN2A gene mutation, people with light colored skin, and personal and family history of skin cancer are associated with the onset of melanoma.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have not developed melanoma.

Out of many risk factors, long-term contact with ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is the most common risk factor found in skin cancer in the US.

Dr. Wang SQ, the lead scientist at the New York University School of Medicine, wrote, "The incidence and mortality rates of melanoma have risen for many decades in the United States. Increased exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation is generally considered to be responsible. Sunburns, a measure of excess sun exposure, have been identified as a risk factor for the development of melanoma".

And, "Because sunburns are primarily due to UVB (280-320 nm) radiation, UVB has been implicated as a potential contributing factor to the pathogenesis of melanoma. The adverse role of UVA (320-400 nm) in this regard is less well studied".

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongs to the family Cucurbitaceae, and is native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effects of Cucurbitacin B (CuB), a triterpenoid compound isolated from cucumber, against melanoma B16 cells.

According to the tested assays, CuB exerted significant inhibitory effects on cell proliferation, colony formation, cell migration, and invasion potential of the melanoma cells.

In vivo, CuB significantly inhibited the growth of subcutaneous melanoma in mice compared to the control.

Furthermore, the injection of CuB treatment induced rapid cancer cell membrane blebbing and deformation and induced G(2)/M-phase arrest and cell proliferation.

Moreover, CuB also induced overexpression of ROS in facilitating the cytotoxic activity against the tested cell lines through rapid depletion of the protein involved in the formation of microfilaments.

Dr. Zhang Y, the lead scientist said, " These findings indicate that CuB induces rapid depletion of the G-actin pool through ROS-dependent actin aggregation in melanoma cells, which may at least partly account for its anti-tumor activity".

Additionally, CuB inhibited the proliferation of the cell line and was found to be in a dose-dependent manner, involving the induction of autophagy and exhibiting the function of a protein associated with anti-apoptosis.

Combined with chloroquine, a well-known autophagy inhibitor, the combination showed more sensitivity to the tested melanoma cells.

In other words, CuB improved the efficacy of chloroquine against melanoma while reducing the medicine's side effects.

Taken altogether, cucumber processed with a high amount of CuB may be considered a natural remedy for the prevention and treatment of melanoma, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study

Intake of CuB in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

#Onion, The Potential #Healthyfood in the Preventive and Treatment of #OvarianCancer, Researchers Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by irregular cell growth due to the alternation of the DNA.
After penetrating into deeper layer tissues of a specific organ, the proliferative tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

The most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patient.

The ovaries are an -shaped ovum-producing reproductive organ in part of a woman's reproductive system connected to the fallopian tubes and attached to the outer layer of the uterus via the ovarian ligament. Usually, the left and right ovaries take a turn to release an egg every month.

Ovarian cancer is a condition of abnormal cell growth of ovarian cells that start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue of the ovary and have become cancerous. Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers in the US, according to the statistics adapted from the American Cancer Society's publication,.

Cancer Facts & Figures 2010, an estimated 21,880 women in the United States will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer and 13,850 deaths.

The exact causes of ovarian cancer are unknown. However, the most common prevalent factors associated with increased risk of ovarian cancer are
*Age
The risk of ovarian cancer increases for women between 50 to 70 years of age.

* Genetic preposition
Women who carry certain mutation genes such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 account for 5%–13% of ovarian cancers.

* Family history
The risk of the disease increases if one of your direct member's family has a history of cancer.

* Never pregnant
Researchers found that the risk of ovarian cancer is lower with the number of pregnancies.

* Race
White women are associated with a higher risk than other races.

* Hormone therapy
Risk of ovarian cancer increase with the use of hormone replacement therapy in postmenopausal women.

* Chemical exposures
Certain chemicals such as asbestos also increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

* High-fat dietary
Researchers found that women who diet high in saturated fat and trans fat are at higher risk.

* Fertility medication
Drugs used to enhance fertility such as Clomiphene citrate may increase the risk of ovarian cancer.

* Milk
According to the BBC, researchers found that women who drank two or more glasses a day were at double the risk of those who did not consume it at all, or only in small amounts.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in many recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of onionin A (ONA) derived from the onion in the inhibition of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) in the M2 phenotype.

According to the tested analysis.* Onionin A (ONA )inhibits ovarian cancer cell proliferation induced by co-culture with human macrophages.

* Onionin A directly suppressed lung cancer cell proliferation.

* Onionin A enhanced the effects of anti-cancer drugs was also observed.

* In ovarian cancer cells. signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) involved in cell proliferation and chemo-resistance were significantly suppressed by ONA.

* Additionally, ONA inhibited cancer progression and prolonged the survival time in a murine ovarian cancer model under single and combined with chemo drug treatment conditions.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "ONA is considered useful for the additional treatment of patients with lung cancer owing to its suppression of the pro-tumor activation of tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) and direct cytotoxicity against cancer cells".

Taken altogether, onion processed with a higher amount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of ovarian cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Chamomile Protects the Liver Against the Onset of Liver Diseases, Researchers Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Chamomile is also known as camomile, the common name of many species of daisy-like plants in the family Asteraceae. The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory constituent to treat menstrual cramps and sleep disorders, reduce cramping and spastic pain in the bowels, relieve excessive gas and bloating in the intestine, etc.

Chamomilla Recutita flavonoids (chamiloflan) showed to exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects through the induced decrease of ceramide levels in the liver of old rats, according to the Kharkov Karazin National University(1).

Flavonoids of German chamomile also exhibited the hepatoprotective effect, through affect sphingolipid metabolism and reducing the elevated ceramide level in the aged liver by normalized activities of key enzymes of sphingolipid turnover (neutral SMase and ceramidase) and ceramide contents in the damaged liver and liver cells, and stabilized the hepatocyte membranes. Artichoke, The Herb that Regulates Insulin Response, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Insulin response is a process of your body that reacts to the dietary intake.
Insulin produced by the pancreas is a hormone that binds the insulin receptors in the promotion of cells of the intestines to convert glucose to energy for the body's needs.

Acute insulin response was used as the predictor of type 2 diabetes by diagnosing both regular fasting and 2-h plasma glucose concentrations.

Compared to a healthy individual with normal insulin response, most patients with prediabetes and diabetes have elevated fasting and 2 hours of plasma glucose concentration.

There are many risk factors associated with the abnormal insulinemic response. However, some researchers suggested that the gradual dying of the beta cells of the pancreas and insulin receptor sites clogging up by cholesterol are 2 of the major causes that affect insulin expression.

Some researchers suggested that abnormal insulin response may be correlated to the widespread obesity that leads to insulin resistance in the Western world.

Dr. Olga T. Hardy, in the evaluation of the causes of insulin resistance underlying obesity, wrote,

"The association between obesity and insulin resistance is an area of much interest and enormous public health impact".

And, "Visceral adiposity is correlated with the accumulation of excess lipid in the liver and results in cell-autonomous impairment in insulin signaling. Visceral adipose tissue is also prone to inflammation and inflammatory cytokine production, which also contribute to impairment in insulin signaling".

The results strongly suggested if you are obese, your risk of insulin resistance increased substantially compared to overweight or healthy-weight individuals.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas, bloating, etc.

Researchers on finding a potential natural ingredient for the modulation of insulinemic response, researchers investigate the impact of the supplementation of a pre-biotic compound [Jerusalem artichoke meal (JAM)] on the glycaemic and insulinemic response in healthy, non-obese warm-blooded horses.

The study included 6 adult mares fed with crushed oat grains (1 g starch/kg bwt per day) and meadow hay (2 kg/100 kg bwt per day) together with either 0.15 g fructooligosaccharides and inulin (FOS+INU)/kg bwt per day via commercial JAM or maize cob meal without grains as control (CON) in 2 × 3-week periods according to a crossover design.

According to the sample collected at the postprandial (PP) time points (-60, 0, 30, 60, 90, 120, 180, 240, and 300 min), and the plasma glucose and serum insulin levels, JAM vs. CON did not change the PP peak of glucose or insulin (glucose: 6.3 ± 0.40 vs. 7.0 ± 0.87 mmol/l.

However, following JAM feeding, glucose and insulin levels declined more rapidly until 240 min PP compared to animals fed with CON.

The finding suggested that JAM exerted a significant effect on postprandial (PP) glucose and insulin levels on and after the time points of 240 min.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about JA insulinemic response, researchers compared the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosus Linne, HTL) and chungkookjang (CKJ; fermented soybeans) in energy and glucose metabolism.

The study included rats divided into partially pancreatectomized (Px) diabetic rats and sham-operated non-diabetic control rats and all fed high-fat diets. Additionally, diabetic rats were subdivided into an untreated diabetic control group and those fed with 5% HTL, 5% CKJ, or 5% HTL+5% CKJ for 8 weeks. HTL+CKJ treatment reduced visceral fat without modulating energy intake compared to diabetic control.

According to the hyperinsulinemic-euglycemic assay, rats treated with HTL, HTL+CKJ showed an improvement in glucose tolerance, compared to the diabetic normal-control group.

CKJ and CKJ+HTL but not HTL, injection groups increased first and second-phase insulin secretion compared to diabetic control.

Moreover, the glucose infusion rates (mg/kg bw/min) and hepatic insulin sensitivity were increased and CKJ+HTL (13.5), but not HTL (9.4) or CKJ (9.5) alone, and HTL and CKJ+ HTL decreased hepatic glucose compared to diabetic control.

Dr. Yang HJ, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "HTL and CKJ enhanced glucose tolerance in different manners, and exhibited partially additive and complementary effects by reversing insulin resistance and enhancing β-cell function in diabetic rats".

Taken altogether, artichoke used alone or combined with another herbal remedy may be considered functional food for the enhancement of insulinemic response against the onset of diabetes, pending to the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Herbal #Ashwagandha In Reducing the Risk of #ColorectalCancer, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

The bowel is divided into the small bowel (or small intestine) and the large bowel (or colon and rectum). The large intestine formed a part of the bowel in the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a chronic disease associated with a malignant tumor in the colon or rectum that begins in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
The disease also is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing with cancer with a tendency that is easy to predict.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Due to the slow growth in nature, most people with colorectal cancer do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.

The most common symptoms of colorectal cancer at the late stage can induce symptoms of change of bowel movement, bloody stool, and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas, or pain, accompanied by unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss of appetite,

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please contact your doctor to rule out the possibility of colorectal cancer.

At this advanced stage, colorectal cancer cells can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to a second metastasis.

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of colorectal cancer, scientists investigated the effects of Withaferin A (WA), an active steroidal lactone derived from the herbal plant Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), on reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced colorectal cancer model.

According to the tested differentiation, withaferin A showed significant activity in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in human colon cancer cells.

ROS accumulation that causes mitochondrial dysfunction associated with a cellular network of organelles involved in cancer cell progression was also eradicated by the injection of withaferin A.

In other words, withaferin A-induced ROS-mediated cell cycle arrest and the expression of apoptotic proteins by promoting colorectal cancer cell death resulting in decreased mitochondrial membrane potential accompanying mitochondrial dysfunction.

On HCT-116 and RKO cells, WA exhibited cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these results strongly indicated that WA directly inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in CRC cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) induced apoptosis)".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly bioactive compound withaferin A may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to larger sample and multicenter human study.
