The bowel is divided into the small bowel (or small intestine) and the large bowel (or colon and rectum). The large intestine formed a part of the bowel in the digestive system is involved in the absorption of water from the small bowel contents and broken down of certain materials in the feces into substances of which some of them to be reabsorbed and reused by the body.

Colorectal cancer is a chronic disease associated with a malignant tumor in the colon or rectum that begins in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum before proliferating into deeper tissues to form a tumor due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed in developed countries, including the U.S. and Canada.
The disease also is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing with cancer with a tendency that is easy to predict.


According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society in 2019, approximately
101,420 new cases of colon cancer and 44,180 new cases of rectal cancer will be diagnosed in the US.

Furthermore, the overall, lifetime risk colorectal cancer of developing is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

Due to the slow growth in nature, most people with colorectal cancer do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.

The most common symptoms of colorectal cancer at the late stage can induce symptoms of change of bowel movement, bloody stool, and persistent abdominal discomforts, such as cramps, gas, or pain, accompanied by unintended weight loss, fatigue, and loss of appetite,

Ashwagandha also known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, the Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered an anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of colorectal cancer, scientists investigated the effects of Withaferin A (WA), an active steroidal lactone derived from the herbal plant Withania somnifera (Ashwagandha), on reactive oxygen species (ROS) induced colorectal cancer model.

According to the tested differentiation, withaferin A showed significant activity in inducing apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in human colon cancer cells.

ROS accumulation that causes mitochondrial dysfunction associated with a cellular network of organelles involved in cancer cell progression was also eradicated by the injection of withaferin A.


In other words, withaferin A-induced ROS-mediated cell cycle arrest and the expression of apoptotic proteins by promoting colorectal cancer cell death resulting in decreased mitochondrial membrane potential accompanying mitochondrial dysfunction.

On HCT-116 and RKO cells, WA exhibited cytotoxicity in a dose-dependent manner.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these results strongly indicated that WA directly inhibits cell growth and induces apoptosis in CRC cells through ROS-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction and c-Jun N-terminal kinases (JNKs) induced apoptosis)".


Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processed abundantly bioactive compound withaferin A may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to larger sample and multicenter human study.

Ginger may be considered a natural antibiotics alternative for the treatment of Candida albicans overgrowth without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast formed part of the commensal gastrointestinal mycobiota.

Candida albicans overgrowth is the most prevalent cause of fungal infections in humans.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that long-term users of antibiotics that cause an imbalance of the gut microbiome, weakened immune system, unhealthy diet, and women who are pregnant and hormone imbalance of hormone near menstruation are susceptible to the onset of the condition.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient or whole food for the replacement of conventional antibiotics without inducing any effects, researchers at the Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology investigated the effect of ginger against infection caused by Candida albicans.

4 preparations of the essential oils of young and mature rhizomes, air-dried and steamed rhizomes, and seed rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger) were compared in the study.
* All ginger essential oils processed a significant anti-Candida albicans activity.

* Essential oil from the seed and air-dried rhizomes, exerted the highest effect compared to other preparations.

* The seed and air-dried rhizomes essential oils also had a potent inhibitory activity compared to ginger oleoresins obtained by ethanol and hypercritical carbon dioxide extraction and essential oils of 5 other plants in the family Zingiberaceae.
According to the chemical constituents assay, [6]-shogaol was most active against filament formation and growth of C. Albicans, followed by citral and [6]-gingerol.


Furthermore, ginger oleoresin, especially that obtained by ethanol extraction, with a high [6]-gingerol content exhibited potent anti-growth of C. Albicans compared to essential oils of ginger and other Zingiberaceae plants.

Moreover, in a vitro joint study by the Institute of Science and Technology, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) isolated from ginger as an auxiliary chemical substance and intracanal medications on Candida albicans.


The study included 48 single-rooted human teeth randomly divided into four groups (n = 12), according to intracanal medications used: (1) Calcium hydroxide + a pyrogenic saline solution (Ca(OH)2 + SS), (2) 20% ginger glycolic extract (GEN), (3) calcium hydroxide + 20% ginger glycolic extract (Ca(OH)2 + GEN), (4) a pyrogenic SS (control).


At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* CHX was effective in the complete elimination of E. coli and C. albicans.

* ChX also significantly reduced and then completely eliminated E. faecalis after intracanal medication.

* All other applications also revealed a reduction of endotoxins, the outer membrane of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria.

In the final report, the research team concluded, "CHX and intracanal medication used were able to eliminate the microorganisms from the root canal; the endotoxins were reduced, yet not completely eliminated".

These results strongly suggested that ginger bioactive compound processes a significant antibacterial activity, particularly in those of C. albicans.


Taken together, there is no doubt that ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of yeast infection with no side effects.

Fennel may have a potential and positive effect in reducing pain through its anti-antispasmodic property, some scientists suggested.

Anti-antispasmodic activity is an action that relieves, prevents, or lowers the incidence of muscle spasms, especially those of adnominal muscle in the uterus and smooth muscle such as in the bowel wall.

Certain hormones that have the function of controlling muscle contraction and relaxation are found to associate with the intensity of muscle spasms, if overexpressed.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of the genus, belonging to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean.

The herb has been used in traditional and herbal medicine as a warming, carminative, antispasmodic, and antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, regulate the menstrual cycle, and relieve PMS,...

In the findings, the natural antispasmodic ingredients with little or no side effects, Dr. Shamkant B. Badgujar, and colleagues launched an investigation to compare doses of 2.5 and 10.0 mL/L of an alcoholic extract with other Germanic medicinal plants, including Melissa officinalis, Rosmarinus officinalis, Mentha piperita, Matricaria chamomilla, Carum carvi, and Citrus aurantium.

The experiment was carried out on guinea pig ileum by using acetylcholine and histamine as spasmogens.

After taking into all account co and confounders account, researchers found that application-tested doses of alcoholic extract of the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare exert a significant anti-antispasmodic activity by inhibiting the acetylcholine and histamine-induced guinea pig ileal contractions.

Further analysis of the effects of n essential oil obtained from the fruits of Foeniculum vulgare at the doses of 25 μg/ and 10 μg/mL, researchers discovered that the injections also demonstrated a similar as of the extract but through the inhibition of the hormone oxytocin and prostaglandin activities.

Oxytocin and prostaglandin are hormones with a function that causes the contraction of the muscles of the uterus. Over contraction of muscles of the uterus is a major cause of abdominal pain in women.

Interestingly, in the study to investigate whether oral fennel drop has any effects on primary dysmenorrhea, the occurrence of painful menstrual cramps of the uterus, researchers conducted an experiment on sixty college students who suffer from primary dysmenorrhea.

The participants were randomly assigned to two groups and followed up for two cycles. The treatment group was given fennel drop and the control group was given non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) or oral contraceptive pills.

After assessing the final report, researchers suggested that both groups exert a clinically significant effect in reducing pain. However, a comparison of bleeding severity in the study group before and after the intervention on the first day, second day, third day, fourth day, and fifth day was 0.948, 0.330, 0.508, 0.583, and 0.890, respectively.

Dr. Bokaie M, the lead scientist said, "Fennel can be effective in reducing the severity of dysmenorrhea, but it has an unpleasant taste in view of most of the volunteers".

Taken all together, fennel may be considered a secondary and therapeutical form of treatment in reducing pain caused by the overexpression of hormones that control muscle contraction through its antispasmodic activity.

Cardiovascular disease is a general term for diseases associated with the blood vessels and heart, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) affected by obstruction of arteries and stroke-affected by the capillaries in the brain.

In other words, the disease in CVD is vary depending on the affected locations. Atherosclerosis is also the most common cause of cardiovascular disease.

The exact causes of CVD are not clear. However, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes mellitus, lack of exercise, obesity, high blood cholesterol, poor diet, and excessive alcohol consumption, are found to be associated with an increased risk of CVD.

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, over 84 million people in the US suffer from some form of cardiovascular disease, causing the death of 2,200 people a day.

Sadly, approximately 15 million U.S. adults have coronary heart disease.

Out of many risk factors, some researchers suggested that high blood pressure found in 103 million U.S. adults one of the major causes of CVD. Believe it or not, approximately 54% of strokes and 47% of coronary heart diseases, worldwide, are attributable to high blood pressure.


Dr. Chen-Yi Wu, the lead scientist said, "The cardiovascular and expanded-cardiovascular mortality risks were lowest when systolic blood pressures were 120 to 129 mm Hg, and increased significantly when systolic blood pressures (SBPs) were ≥160 mm Hg or diastolic BPs were ≥90 mm Hg".

And, " The impacts of stage 2–3 hypertension on mortality risks were significantly increased among women. The mortality risks of hypertension were not attenuated with older age".

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer,

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), a leading cause of death researchers examined the bilberry's beneficial effects on CVD risk reduction.

The study included women (n=25) and men (n=11) who consumed 150 g of frozen stored bilberries 3 times a week for 6 weeks.

According to the tested assays, consumption of bilberries showed a decrease in total cholesterol, LDL-C, TG, glucose, albumin, γ-glutamyltransferase, and a positive increase in HDL-C.

All parameters associated with the risk of CVD were decreased substantially at the end of the study. In other words, bilberry reduced the risk of CVD by promoting the blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.

Interestingly, in men, favorable changes were observed in total cholesterol, glucose, albumin, aspartate aminotransferase, γ-glutamyltransferase, and HDL-C compared to women.

The results strongly support the regular use of bilberries as a dietary source of fruit to reduce the CVD risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C.

Dr. Habanova M, after taking into account co and confound wrote in the final report, "Changes in other parameters were not significant, for both women and men. Thus, the regular intake of bilberries can be important to reduce CVDs risk, by decreasing LDL-C/TG and increasing HDL-C".

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functioning remedy for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidant 3,3'-#Diindolylmethane Isolated From #CruciferousVegetables Gobbles UpTriple Negative #BreastCancer Cells, Researchers Say

Unlike general breast cancer which processes either receptors for estrogen or progesterone and/or receptors with a protein called HER2, triple-negative breast cancer is a form of breast cancer that does not share the aforementioned characteristics.

In other words, triple-negative breast cancer does not have receptors of estrogen or progesterone or genetic preposition.
More importantly, triple-negative breast cancer was found to infect women under the age of 40 and women of African or Asian ancestry in the US, compared to breast cancer in the White.

Particularly, according to the epidemiological study, younger women and women of African ancestry are susceptible to a higher risk of basal-like triple-negative breast cancers.

Compared to the malignant nature, triple-negative and basal-like breast cancers are highly invasive and can grow and spread quickly to other tissues and organs through lymph and blood.

Also compared to other breast cancer, with decreased risk after 5 years, triple-negative breast cancers have a substantially higher recurrent rate within 5 years after treatment.


Triple-negative breast cancer shares symptoms similar to those of breast cancer and risk factor except in the form of the genetic preposition.

According to Dr. Shimelis H, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Mayo Clinic, said, "Pathogenic variants in BRIP1, RAD51C, and TP53 were associated with moderate risk (odds ratio > 2) of TNBC. Similar trends were observed for the African American population. Pathogenic variants in these TNBC genes were detected in 12.0% (3.7% non-BRCA1/2) of all participants".

And, "Multigene hereditary cancer panel testing can identify women with an elevated risk of TNBC due to mutations in BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, and RAD51D".

In other words, if you carry the mutated genes BARD1, BRCA1, BRCA2, PALB2, and RAD51D, you are at a higher risk of triple-negative breast cancer.

In seeking a potential compound for the treatment of breast cancer, researchers reexamined the promising anticancer effects of novel C-substituted diindolylmethane (DIM) derivatives DIM-10 and DIM-14 in aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC, MDA-MB-231) models.

In vitro studies, novel C-substituted diindolylmethane (DIM) derivatives DIM-10 and DIM-14 demonstrated strong anti-cancer effects.

NLC formulations. including DIM-10 and DIM-14 extended significant increase in oral bioavailability compared to poor permeability and poor oral bioavailability of DIM-10 and DIM-14 used alone in pharmacokinetic studies.

Furthermore, compared to DIM-10, DIM-10 used alone, the NLC formulation showed an increase in Cmax and AUC values by 4.73 and 11.19-folds.

Similar increased anti-aggressive triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) efficacy was also found in the DIM-14 NLC formulations.

In dogs, the DIM-10 NLC formulations showed an increase of 2.65 and 2.94-fold in Cmax and AUC, against triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) respectively.

Moreover, DIM-10 or DIM-14 NLC formulations demonstrated significant a reduction in tumor volumes in TNBC models and treated animals.

Dr. Godugu C, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders wrote, "NLC formulation of both DIM-10 and 14 is effective in TNBC models".

Taken altogether, 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of triple-negative breast cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cognition is the process of the brain functioning associated with the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision-making.
A cognitive deficit is a medical condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding,, or memory. The cognitive deficit can be acute or chronic.

Acute cognitive deficit is a short-term health problem caused by drug toxicity and withdrawal, electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensor input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction, or myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary. An acute cognitive deficit may be recovered if the cause is found.

Chronic cognitive deficit is a permanent medical condition caused by the gradual or permanent loss of neurons, leading to problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.

There is no single cause of the chronic cognitive deficit. An increase in age, genetic preposition, certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, being obese, and lack of exercise are some prevalent factors found in patients with chronic cognitive deficits.

Some researchers suggested that depending on the locations of the brain that were affected, patients may be at risk of Alzheimer's disease such as brain change caused by the abnormal clumps of beta-amyloid protein (plaques).


Small strokes or reduced blood flow through the brain can also cause a chronic cognitive deficit.

According to the observation of the patient's MRI, the patient's brain with cognitive impairment also showed shrinkage of the hippocampus, a brain region important for memory, enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces (ventricles), and reduced use of glucose, the sugar that's the primary source of energy for cells.

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of the condition, obesity is also one of the major risk factors of cognitive impairment in the Western world.

Dr. Jason C. D. Nguyen, the lead author on the neurological team wrote in the final report, "The incidence of obesity in middle age is increasing markedly, and in parallel, the prevalence of metabolic disorders including cardiovascular disease and type II diabetes is also rising. Numerous studies have demonstrated that both obesity and metabolic disorders are associated with poorer cognitive performance, cognitive decline, and dementia".

Brussels sprouts are a species of wild cabbage (Brassica oleracea), that belongs to the family of Brassicaceae and was cultivated since ancient Rome.


With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment, researchers examined the effects of dietary intake of sulforaphane-rich broccoli sprout extracts against parameters associated with the risk of cognitive dysfunction in patients with schizophrenia.

According to the results of the experiment, sulforaphane (SFN) derived from broccoli showed a strong effect in the activation of the transcription factor Nrf2 regulated by Keap1, a cytoplasmic protein that plays a central role against the stimulation of oxidative stress.

Moreover, pretreatment with SFN attenuated cognitive deficit, the increase in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells, and the decrease in PV-positive cells in the medial prefrontal cortex and hippocampus found in patients with a neurodegenerative disease caused by oxidative stress induced by administration of phencyclidine (PCP).

In other words, PCP-induced cognitive deficits were inhibited by the subsequent subchronic administration of SFN.

Believe it or not, chronic dietary intake of glucoraphanin (a glucosinolate precursor of SFN) during juvenile and adolescence not only prevented the onset of PCP-induced cognitive deficit but also increased in 8-oxo-dG-positive cells and the decreased in PV-positive cells in the brain at adulthood.

The results strongly suggested the NRF2 gene and the KEAP1 gene had an epistatic effect on gene reaction on cognitive impairment (e.g., working memory and processing speed) in patients with schizophrenia.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "SFN may have prophylactic and therapeutic effects on cognitive impairment in schizophrenia. Therefore, the dietary intake of SFN-rich broccoli sprouts during juvenile and adolescence may prevent the onset of psychosis in adulthood".

Taken altogether, broccoli sprouts processed abundantly SFN may be considered a functional food for the promotion of cognitive deficit, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

#Anise, the Herbal Medicine That Processes Anti-#Depression Properties, Scientists Show

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and treatment of depression, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belonging to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners, and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Depression is a condition of a mood disorder. affecting the patient's feelings, thinking, and handle daily activities.

According to the statistic of The National Institute of Mental Health, approximately, 16 million adults had at least one major depressive episode in 2012 in the United States, 6.9 percent of the population.

In the evaluation of the herbal Anise aqueous and ethanol extracts antidepressant-like effects in mice with several different doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg in compared to the standard medicine Fluoxetine at the dose of 30mg/kg and imipramine at the dose of 20mg/kg, researchers at the joint study lead by the Azad University showed that except for the dose at 50mg/kg of aqueous extract, application of other doses demonstrated a linearly significant improvement of mobility times.

Further analysis also found that all doses from Anise extract increased the swimming time dose-dependently, without any significant change in climbing time in tested mice similar to those of Fluoxetine and compared to aqueous extract.

Moreover, Fluoxetine and imipramine expressed a strong decreased immobility time in both tests in contrast to imipramine's increased climbing time without any significant change in swimming time.

The result suggested that both extracts in a dose higher than 50mg/kg display antidepressant-like activity similar to that of fluoxetine through improved mobility of depressed mice as inactivity is considered one of the major symptoms in patients with depression.

As the depression progressed, patients demonstrated behavior in making efforts to escape from society, eventually will exhibit immobility with the reflection of psychological despair.


Dr. Shahamat Z the lead author said, " P. anisum possesses an antidepressant-like activity similar to that of fluoxetine, which has a potential clinical value for application in the management of depression".

Additionally, in the testing essential (volatile) oil and essential oil of Piper laetispicum antidepressant activity in compared to Fluoxetine as standard antidepressant drug and other natural remedies including Leaves-Bay, Curry, Coriander and Mint; Fruits-Star anise, Pepper, Cardamom, Caraway and Fennel; Seeds of Fenugreek, Mustard, Nutmeg and Black Cumin; and Underground stem-Onion, Garlic, Ginger and Turmeric; Miscellaneous-Clove, Cinnamon, Capsicum, Tamarind and Asafoetida, researchers found that all participated essential oil, especially anise produced a significant reduction in immobility along with an increase in climbing behavior similar to those of fluoxetine.

The application of essential oil caused a dose-dependent reduction( probably in a dose less than 50 mg/kg) in immobility which is contracted to the above study and an increase in climbing at all studied doses in comparison to the control group.

However, the test may not take into effect in real-life patients who need to be treated for at least several weeks before they experience any relief from the expression of symptoms.

Furthermore, in the examination of the efficacy of anise oil, in removing the symptoms of mild to moderate depression in patients with irritable bowel syndrome a total of 120 randomly assigned into 3 equal groups received anise oil, Colpermin, and placebo, at the end of the study, scientists showed that application of anise group exerted a continuous improvement of the syndrome in compared to the other 2 groups with some unknown mechanisms.

Some researchers postulated that essential oil smell may have a profound effect on the brain in triggering an emotional reaction in stimulating the limbic system in regulated autonomic and endocrine function, particularly, in response to emotional stimuli in an expression of motivation and reinforcing behaviors.

Additionally, the application of essential oil scent also has a direct influence in calming the central nervous system in ameliorating the overproduction of certain hormones in reacting to unfavorably emotional behaviors.

Taken together, Anise essential oil may be used as a secondary therapy to standard medicine in the treatment of depression.
