Neuro-toxicity is a condition of brain damage caused by exposure to toxic substances.
The toxic condition was found to reduce the brain function in transmitting and processing signals to other parts of the nervous system.
Symptoms of neurotoxicity are totally depending on the degree of toxicity. Some symptoms may take some time to develop. However, in most cases, symptoms may appear immediately after exposure.
Depending on the area and location of neuron damage, weakness or numbness, loss of memory, vision, headache change of cognitive and behavioral and sexual dysfunction are the most common symptoms found in people with neurotoxicity.
According to the statistics provided by the University of Ibadan, in the United States, for instance, out of 63 million youths under 18 years of age, about 10% have diagnosable neurobehavioural problems with only 20% receiving therapy and the magnitude affected by neurotoxicity is unknown.
The University continued, "The adverse effects of neurotoxicity are among the most feared ill health in humans because they adversely affect the quality of life", and "Undoubtedly, the magnitude and potential severity of neurotoxicity problems make it imperative to invest in resources required to strengthen the basis for preventive intervention, the forerunner of which is the development of biomarkers for neurotoxicity at the individual and population levels".
In other words, out of millions of people who have neurobehavioural problems, researchers do not know how many of them are actually caused by toxicity.
Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrub in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.
The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, psoriasis, diabetes, etc.
In the analysis of natural compounds with neuroprotective effects in patients with diabetes, researchers examined the antioxidants richly present in bilberry fruits' effects on diabetes-related brain dysfunctions.
The study included the differentiation of the expression patterns of αCaMKII in hippocampal neurons from non-diabetic, diabetic, and diabetic rats fed with an extract of bilberry fruit.
Where Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IIα (αCaMKII) plays a significant role in cognitive processes.
Diabetic rat's hippocampal neurons immunoreactive (ir) to αCaMKII were swollen and the lengths of the neuronal fibers were reduced compared to the significantly longer αCaMKII-positive nerve fibers in diabetic rats fed with bilberry fruit.
Injection of bilberry fruit also induced significant changes in the average larger diameter of αCaMKII-ir hippocampal neurons.
The results suggested that bilberry fruits exerted a neuroprotective effect on hippocampal neurons in diabetes through its antioxidants activity.
Furthermore, in order to find more information about the bilberry effect on the brain, researchers examined it's anthocyanoside (VMA) and/or its main anthocyanidin constituents (cyanidin, delphinidin, and malvidin) neuroprotective effect against retinal damage in vitro and in vivo.
In RGC cultures, VMA and all three anthocyanidins protected the brain against SIN-1 (chloride) toxicity and inhibited lipid peroxidation in mouse forebrain homogenates through the antioxidant property and NMDA-induced morphological retinal damage by allowing high levels of calcium ions (Ca2+) to enter the cells.
Moreover, VMA and all three anthocyanidins also protected the retinal damage by increasing the TUNEL-positive cells in the ganglion cell layer.
Dr. Matsunaga N, the lead scientist said, "VMA and its anthocyanidins have neuroprotective effects (exerted at least in part via an anti-oxidation mechanism) in these in vitro and in vivo models of retinal diseases".
Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases associated with neurotoxicity, pending the validation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Hypertension, a condition associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome is a medical condition associated with abnormally high blood pressure.Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood and changes constantly depending on activity. However, persistent hypertension due to poor management over time can lead to diabetes and cardiovascular disease.
According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association., nearly half of all adults in the United States live with high blood pressure, or 1 in 3 Americans are hypertensive.
Hypertension is a leading risk factor for heart disease and stroke that cause more death in the US
The most common prevalent factors associated with the condition onset are family history, aging, being male, being overweight or obese, ethnicity, physical inactivity, unhealthy diet, and medical condition such as chronic kidney disease.
Believe it or not, excessive alcohol drinking is also one of the major causes besides obesity in elevating the syndrome onset.
Depending on the levels of blood pressure, most people with mild hypertension are asymptomatic. However, unmanaged high blood pressure can induce complications of heart attack or stroke, heart failure, weakened and narrowed blood vessels, metabolic syndrome, and trouble with memory or understanding,
In severe cases, chronic hypertension can lead to dementia.
Conventionally, blood pressure medications have been found to prevent many deaths from heart disease and stroke over the past 30 years, however, long-term intake of such medications has caused many side effects such as damaging the kidney.
Some researchers suggested, by making changes in lifestyle, maintaining an ideal weight, and eating a diet with low salt, you could do just fine without the drugs.
Dr. Myung Hwa Yang wrote, "Healthy eating, weight management, and appropriate physical activity are essential for the management of high blood pressure in adults since this lifestyle management has the potential to improve blood pressure control and even reduce the need for medication.23)"
And "Our findings indicate that to achieve better rates of blood pressure control, the clinician should advise lifestyle modifications such as adequate physical activity and low salt intake, in addition to prescribing medication and monitoring the patient for hypertension control".
The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation to garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in many recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.
Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild, or sweet.
On finding a potent ingredient that processes cardioprotection researchers examined the effects of onion on blood pressure in N(G)-nitro-L-arginine methyl ester (L-NAME) induced-hypertensive rats and stroke-prone spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHRSP).
The vivo studies included male 6-weeks-old Sprague-Dawley rats induced-hypertensive to receive tap water containing L-NAME of a concentration of 50 mg/kg BW/day and dried onion at 5%.
Onion application showed significant anti-hypertensive activity on the L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats and the SHRSP by decreasing the thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) associated with lipid peroxidation in blood plasma.
Furthermore, nitrate/nitrite (products of nitric oxide (NO)) involved in blood vessel relaxation excreted in urine and the NO synthase (NOS) associated with vascular tone activity in the kidneys in SHRSP were also increased by the onion injection.
Interestingly, the efficacy of onion that inhibits the onset of high blood pressure was not found to be similar to those in the L-NAME-induced hypertensive rats such as increasing the levels of NOS.
More precisely, onion promoted hypotension in L-NAME treated rats without inhibiting NOS activity by L-NAME, and decreased nitrate/nitrite excretion in urine may be associated with only the promotion of antioxidants activity
Dr. Sakai Y, the lead scientist said, "The mechanism of the antihypertensive effect of onion probably involves the increased saving of NO by the antioxidative activity of onion in L-NAME induced-hypertensive rats".
Taken altogether, onions may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

A mammary tumor is a medical and chronic condition originating from the milk-producing gland.
The mammary gland located in the breasts of females is responsible for lactation.
Most cases of mammary cancer are first found in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the milk-producing gland, before penetrating deeper into the layers.
At the advanced stage, the malignant cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.
Epidemiologically, mammary cancer has been found to spread to the colon and the liver.
Most common risk factors of mammary cancer are similar to those of breast cancer, including, aging, physical inactivity, being obese or overweight, family and personal history, having a dense breast, radiation therapy, pregnancy history, genetic proposition, particularly in women who had used drug diethylstilbestrol (DES).
Out of all the aforementioned risk factors, some researchers suggested that the promotion of high-fat-diet-induced a high percentage of obese US females may be the major culprit that causes the rise of mammary cancer.
Dr. Valeria Simone, the lead scientist in the examination of the molecule interconnection of obesity and breast cancer risk wrote, "Obesity is an important risk factor for breast cancer (BC) in postmenopausal women; interlinked molecular mechanisms might be involved in the pathogenesis. Increased levels of estrogens due to aromatization of the adipose tissue, inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-6, and prostaglandin E2, insulin resistance and hyperactivation of insulin-like growth factors pathways, adipokines, and oxidative stress are all abnormally regulated in obese women and contribute to cancerogenesis".
Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.
With an aim to find a natural ingredient against mammary carcinoma, researchers examined the bromelain autophagic phenomenon in mammary carcinoma cells (estrogen receptor positive and negative).
According to the tested assays, bromelain showed delayed growth inhibitory response and induction of autophagy, in MCF-7 cells.
Bromelain-induced cancer cell apoptosis was found in the sub-G1 cell fraction and apoptotic features associated with chromatin condensation change and cell division.
Interestingly, in the presence of an anti-apoptotic protein that augments the autophagy levels, bromelain inhibited morphological apoptosis but did not prevent cell death.
In other words, bromelain induced cancer cell death by inhibiting the expression of signaling cascade associated with the phosphorylation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase ½ (ERK½) and exhibiting the proapoptotic kinases (c-jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and p38 kinase).
Based on the findings, researchers said, "bromelain-induced autophagy was positively regulated by p38 and JNK but negatively regulated by ERK½. Autophagy-inducing property of bromelain can be further exploited in breast cancer therapy".
In order to reveal more information about bromelain anti-mammary carcinoma properties, researchers examined the enzyme effect on GI-101A breast cancer cells.
According to the results from GI-101A cells treated with increasing concentrations of bromelain for 24 hours, bromelain induced cancer cell death via activation of the apoptosis mechanisms.
Observation of the results from the caspase-9 and caspase-3 assays, bromelain exhibited a prominent effect to induce cancer cell apoptosis correlated with the elevation of plasma cytokeratin 18 (CK-18) fragment levels, a marker of cell death.
The inhibition of bromelain against cancer cell proliferation was also evident by the DNA fragmentation analysis and 4,6'-diamino-2-phenylindole dihydrochloride fluorescence staining of the nucleus.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of mammary carcinoma, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Scientists may have found a sweet functional food that processes the potential for the prevention and treatment of cancer, some studies suggested.
Cancers are a group of chronic diseases, caused by cell growth disorderly and uncontrollably in some specific tissue and organs.
Most primary cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue caused by the alternation of DNA.
At the later stage, after penetrating deep into the tissue of the infected organs, most primary cancer can travel a distance away from the original site to damage other healthy tissue and organs.
As they grow large enough, they can also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells, causing severe pain and localized symptoms.
Researchers do not know the exact causes of colon cancer. Neither do they know why some people with the same health conditions, diet pattern and ethnicity, and family history, are susceptible to the early onset of the diseases, while many others do not.
The most common risk factors, epidemiologically are associated with the types of cancer. The National Cancer Institute suggested that aging, tobacco, long-term sun and radiation exposure, chemicals and other substances, some viruses and bacteria, certain hormones, family history of cancer, alcohol, poor diet, lack of physical activity, or being overweight are the common causes of cancer.
In the challenges, the idea that cancer cannot be prevented among older adults, researchers at the National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion launched a study by examining different aspects of the relationship between age and cancer said, "Although the sequential patterns of aging cannot be changed, several age-related factors that contribute to disease risk can be".

* Gelam honey markedly enhanced 5-FU inhibiting effects on the growth of HCT 116 cells.
Subsequent analysis on the induction of cellular apoptosis also suggested the individual treatment of ginger and Gelam honey produced higher apoptosis compared to 5-FU alone.
These results once again suggested that Gelam honey and ginger extract used alone or in combination could potentially enhance the chemotherapeutic effect of 5-FU against colorectal cancer.
Taken altogether, honey used alone or combined with ginger might process significant and profound effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of colon cancer.

Liver oxidative stress caused by a toxic substance such as an overdose of the supplement has been found to constitute most cases of acute liver damage.
The liver is the largest internal organ that not only filters the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body but also plays a critical role in the production of cholesterol, a waxy substance that aids digestion, builds cell membranes, and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.
Liver stress is a condition in which the function of the liver is partly reduced. Hepatic stress can be observed by the levels of liver stress-makers, including transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT).
Abnormal high levels of transaminases aspartate transaminase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) are early indications of liver damage or injury.
Epidemiologically, drugs that induce liver injury are nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), anti-infective drugs (anti-tubercular drugs), anti-cancer drugs, hormonal drugs, immunosuppressive agents, and sedative and neuropsychiatric drugs.

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world's diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.
On finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver injury, researchers investigated the potential oxidative damage of 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) in hepatic microsomal fractions in an animal model.
The study included rat liver microsomes that were divided into four groups.
* Group I served as a control and is incubated with vehicle (toluene).
* Groups II and IV incubated with 20 µM lycopene for 1 h before further incubating; and
* Groups III and IV with 15 nM of TCDD for a further 1 h.
Based on the tested analysis, groups treated with TCDD showed a significant increase in liver oxidative stress observed by increasing levels of Hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) production, lipid peroxidation (LPO),
Protein carbonyl content and activities of uridine 5'-diphosphate-glucuronyltransferase (UDPGT) and P450 associated with liver damage also increased substantially in the TCDD treatment groups.
Furthermore, the activity of antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase, catalase, glutathione-S-transferase, and glutathione reductase, and the microsomal thiol content produced by the rat liver microsomes was significantly decreased in the TCDD treatment groups.
Lycopene treatment group IV not only normalized the activities of the enzymes, thiol, and carbonyl content but also significantly reduced LPO and H2O2 production.
These results suggested that TCDD induced liver toxicity by increasing the levels of free radicals and decreasing the antioxidant activity in rat liver microsomes.
Based on the findings, researchers concluded, "TCDD induces significant oxidative stress in liver microsomes as manifested by increased LPO, H2O2 production, protein carbonyl content and activities of UDPGT and P450 and decreased antioxidant enzymes activities and thiol content".
Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomatoes may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of lycopene in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

The reduced levels of antioxidants enzymes and increased oxidative stress in the cardiac tissues induced by DOX such as glutathione (GSH) depletion and oxidized glutathione (GSSG), malondialdehyde (MDA), and protein carbonyls were significantly inhibited by the administration of CRAN.
Furthermore, the reduced cardiac activities of catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), and glutathione reductase (GR) induced by DOX were also inhibited by CRAN.
Moreover, CRAN also improved the cardiac myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity against infection compared to untreated rats.
Most important, CRAN also normalized the levels of enzymes associated with cardio muscle damage and injury caused by DOX such as troponin I, creatine phosphokinase (CK), and creatine kinase-MB.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "CRAN alleviated histopathological changes in rats' hearts treated with DOX. In conclusion, CRAN protects against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity in rats".
Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the protection of cardiovascular toxicity, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Skin cancer is a medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the skin tissues, due to the alternation of cell DNA.
Most cases of skin cancer in the US are associated with prolong-period of sun exposure. In other words, UV rays that damage the skin have been the main culprit that causes the onset of skin cancer.
Believe it or not, according to the statistics, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the US. one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime.
Every day, approximately 9,500 people in the U.S. are diagnosed with skin cancer due to a misunderstanding of the health benefits and risks of sun and tanning exposure.
Most common symptoms at the early stage, are a large brownish spot with darker speckles, a mole that changes in color, size, or feel or that bleeds, a small lesion with an irregular border, and portions that appear red, pink, and white, blue or blue-black.
There are 3 major types of skin cancer, including* Basal cell cancer
It is the most common type of skin cancer associated with the abnormal growth of the cells in the lowest layer of the epidermis. Cancer rarely spreads and kills but can cause significant destruction and disfigurement to the affected skin area, accounting for more than 90% of all skin cancer in the U.S.
* Squamous cell cancer
It arises from the uncontrolled multiplication of transformed malignant cells in the middle layer of the epidermis.
* Melanoma

In the urgency to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of skin cancer, researchers examined the bromelain (BL) effect in the form of nanoparticles (NPs) based delivery systems on skin cancer cells.
The formulated NPs with a mean particle size of 130.4 ± 8.81 nm exhibited sustained release of BL by observation of the analysis.
According to the tested assays, BL-loaded poly (lactic-co-glycolic acid) NPs enhanced anti-tumor effects compared to free BL.
In the tumorigenesis mice model, NPs reduced the average number of tumors by 2.3 folds), delayed tumorigenesis by 2 weeks), and inhibited the percent tumorigenesis by 4 folds.
Furthermore, the administration of NPs also exerted a significant effect on reducing the percent mortality rate and the average tumor volume.
More precisely, NPs demonstrated anti-cancer cell efficacy was attributed to their capability in modulating the expression of pro-apoptotic (P53, Bax) and anti-apoptotic (Bcl2) proteins.
Based on the finding, researchers said, "developed NPs formulation could be used to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy by exerting chemo-preventive effects against induced carcinogenesis at lower dosages".
Additionally, in another mouse skin tumorigenesis model, bromelain not only exerted a similar effect on the aforementioned study it also reduced tumor volume up to a tune of approximately 65%.
In this case, bromelain induced cancer cells apoptosis by stimulating the expression of proteins associated with tumor-suppressive and pro-apoptotic genes, inhibiting the gene involved in anti-apoptosis.
Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of skin cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of bromelain in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
