Healthy Foods Dried Peas and Dried Beans Ameliorate the Risk and Treatment of Colon Cancer in Vivo and Human Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Dietary factors can influence cancers formation and growth, intake of dried peas may have a potential effect in reduced risk of colon cancer, a recent study suggested

Dried pea is a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, genus Pisum belongings to the family Fabaceae with a healthy source of proteins, fibers, vitamins, and minerals.

Colon cancer is a condition characterized by cell growth disorderly and irregularly in the tissues of the colon.

A case-control designed study of 186 men and women with a mean of 58 years of age revealed that consumption of legumes such as dried beans, split peas, or lentils daily and regularly was inversely associated with reduced risk of colon cancer, after adjusting all potential confounding variables.

The relative risk odd ratio of colon cancer occurrence in these subjects was ameliorated substantially in comparison to control.

Researchers also indicated that the risk of colon cancer decrease may be attributed to legumes dietary fiber together with enormous presences of phytochemical compounds.
Dr. Agurs-Collins T, the led author said, "Nurses working with African-Americans should encourage consumption of these foods to decrease this risk".

Others, in the study of the same subject, suggested that by modifying diet and lifestyle habits, adenomatous polyps and 25-35% of colon adenoma risk could be avoidable. As consumption of legumes at least 3 times/wk reduced the risk of colon cancer by 33% after adjusting for meat intake.

Furthermore, the research result also postulated that a high frequency of consumption of cooked green vegetables, dried fruit, legumes, and brown rice was associated with a decreased risk of colorectal polyps.

Interestingly, in the investigated effect of consumption of standard diets supplemented with freeze-dried vegetables (peas, spinach, sprouts, and broccoli) and carotenoids (all-trans beta-carotene and palm oil carotenoid extract) on surrogate end-point markers for colorectal cancer in an azoxymethane-induced rat model, researchers at the Unilever Research Vlaardingen, illustrated that
peas, spinach, sprouts, and a mix of all vegetable diet expressed a significantly reduced the number of foci with >2 aberrant crypts/focus by 37, 26, 23, and 26%, particularly in the pea and spinach intervention groups.

After adjusting to other risk factors, researchers filed the following reports
1. Peas, spinach, sprouts, and a mix of all vegetable diet was beneficial effects in reduced risk of colorectal carcinogenesis
2. Consumption of several types of vegetables inhibits the early onset of colorectal carcinogenesis
3. and suggest that the vegetable-induced effect is more pronounced in advanced lesions.

Taking all together, dried peas may be used as therapeutic ingredients in reduced risk and treatment of colon cancer and diseases related to colon abnormalities.

Green Tea Decoction GTD (2/3 Epigallocatechin Gallate (EGCG)+1/3 Epigallocatechin EGC) Reduces Weight Gain and Promotes Weight Loss, Researchers Say

Kyle J. Norton

Green tea polyphenols may have a therapeutic effect in reduced weight gain through decreased hormone expression with function direct influence of excess energy deposit, some scientists opinionated.

Green tea, a precious drink processes numbers of health benefits known to almost everyone in Asia and the Western world. However, as yin in nature herbal medicine or food, long term injection of large amounts may obstruct the balance of yin-yang, induced "yin excessive syndrome" or "yang vacuity syndrome" including weaken immunity and painful case of GERD,... according to traditional Chinese medicine's Yin-Yang theory.

Weight gain is an increase in body weight, involved an increase in muscle mass, fat deposits, excess fluids.

In the compared green tea, polyphenols [epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC)] in a decoction of green tea leaves versus usual green tea extracts to evaluate the effect in weight gain in obese animal models fed with a high-fat diet, researchers after taking into account of other con-founders suggested that green tea decoction acute administration of GTD with 2/3 EGCG+1/3 EGC inhibited SGLT-1 activity involved distinct and complementing glucose homeostasis through absorbing glucose from the diet in the small intestine and by reabsorbing the filtered glucose in the tubular system of the kidney, thus reducing access energy being converted to glycogen or fat and deposit in liver, muscles and fat cells.

Additionally, green tea decoction not only improved glucose tolerance but also demonstrated a significant increase in GLUT2 protein in facilitated glucose movement across cell membranes in the regulation of glucose absorption in the distribution of dietary sugar to tissues to induce calorie restriction.

Chronic administration of green tea decoction GTD for 6 weeks, in the same experiment models, also displayed a huge reduction of body weight gain, circulating triglycerides and cholesterol, and improved glucose tolerance, through significantly reduced SGLT-1 as seen in an acute application and increased GLUT2 mRNA levels in the jejunum mucosa with function in increase the surface area of tissue available to absorb nutrients from ingested foodstuffs for decreased fat accumulation and glucose in the liver.

Dr. Snoussi C, the lead author said, "GTD-treated rats for 6 weeks display significantly reduced SGLT-1 and increased GLUT2 mRNA levels in the jejunum mucosa". This result showed that green tea decoction with polyphenols such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC) may have a certain effect in reduced weight gain through decreased fat deposit in the liver and promoted calorie restriction.

Further analysis of C57BL/6J mice fed a high-fat/high-sucrose diet (HF/HS, 32% energy from fat; 25% energy from sucrose) or the same diet supplemented with 0.25% GTP or BTP or a low-fat/high-sucrose (LF/HS, 10.6% energy from fat, 25% energy from sucrose) diet for 4 weeks showed that treatment with decaffeinated green tea (GT) polyphenols inhibited weight gain in mice fed an obesogenic diet as indicated above, through the rearrange the relative proportions of Blautia, Bryantella, Collinsella, Lactobacillus, Marvinbryantia, Turicibacter, Barnesiella, and Parabacteroides is correlated with weight loss by a decrease of cecum Firmicutes and increase in Bacteroidetes in the gastrointestinal tract.
Indeed, GTP not only induces weight loss in association with alteration of the gut microbiota but also increased hepatic AMPK in reaction in sugar metabolism, and energy storage and release.

Interestingly, according to the START Clinic for the Mood and Anxiety Disorders, oral administration of green tea extract induced an unexpected decrease in total body fat mass, a decrease in body fat percentage, and an increase in lean body mass in patients with weight gain induced by psychotropic medications.

Taken together, green tea, bioactive active polyphenols epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), epigallocatechin (EGC) may be used as a functional food in reduced weight gain induced by all sources and increased weight loss through regulation of energy metabolism in fat accumulation.

Herbal Anise's Anethole Reduces the Risk, Progression and Treatment of Osteoporosis, Scientists Suggest

Kyle J. Norton

Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of osteoporosis, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the investigation of the herbal selective estrogen receptor modulators or SERMs effect in risk of osteoporosis, in comparison of plant aqueous extracts derived from Greek flora (Sideritis euboea, Sideritis clandestina, Marticaria chamomilla, and Pimpinella anisum), researchers at the Medical School, University of Athens found that all extracts exert profound activities in stimulated the differentiation and mineralization of osteoblastic cell culture.

Further analysis, also discovered that all plant extracts at concentration range 10-100 microg/mL, including Anise induced osteoblastic cell differentiation in formation of bone and improved bone density.

These results indicated that Anise and other plant extracts may comprise a substantial anti-estrogenic effect in reduced risk of osteoporosis in a dose-dependent manner.

Also, in the evaluation of (E)-anethole, a major bioactive compound isolated from Anise protective effect on H2O2-induced alterations in collagen metabolism, researchers showed that application of anethole of 0.5 µM for 1 h completely prevent the alternation of cells treated with 300 µM H2O2 in displayed a decrease in collagen biosynthesis of 54 %, correlated with alterations of type I collagen mRNA expression in the osteoblasts in initiated higher bone turn over.

Additionally, differentiation also revealed that Anise anethole administration at 10 µM, exerts the most efficient suppression in the ameliorated expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 caused by H2O2 induced alterations in collagen metabolism, in contributing to the 8 % decrease in the amount of collagen secreted into the medium.

The result suggested that the application of H2O2 not only directly activates MMPs but also causes a decrease in the expression of their inhibitors, such as TIMP2, a metastasis suppressor in initiated alterations of collagen metabolism in bone.

In Other words, anethole isolated from Anise attenuated ROS causes increased activity of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in degraded collagen in fibroblasts.
Some researchers suggested, "the loss of MMP-9 improved the connectivity density of the trabeculae, whereas the loss of MMP-2 reduced this parameter. Similar differential effects in architecture were observed in the L5 vertebra, but bone volume fraction was lower for both MMP-2 and MMP-9 (in mice study) "

Taken together, Anise and its bioactive anethole may be considered as a functional herb for reduced risk and treatment of osteoporosis caused by collagen loss in skin and bone. However, intake of Anise supplement should be taken with extreme care in prevented toxicity.

Mixture of Kale (Brassica Oleracea) and Payapa Shows Promising Results for the Treatment of Colitis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is medical a condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

There is no exact cause of colitis. Certain risk factors such as colon infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis have been found to increase the risk of the onset of the condition.

The most common symptoms of colitis are totally depending on the types, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Types of colitis according to the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, are including
Depending on the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis, particularly in those associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), such as ulcerative colitis (UC).

Some cases of colitis are also induced by the overactive immune system in the response of unharmful allergens.

Most common symptoms of colitis depending on the cause of the disease, including abdominal pain, cramping, diarrhea, with or without blood in the stool.

Some patients in the early phase of colitis may also experience symptoms of fever, chills, fatigue, and skin inflammation.

If you experience some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure that you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Treatment of colitis is totally depending on the causes. Infected colitis is treated with antibiotics.

However, treatment of non-infection colitis is focusing on symptoms relief, supportive care, and maintaining adequate hydration and pain control.

If you are taking antibiotics for the treatment of colitis, please discuss the side effect with your doctor.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belonging to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of colitis researchers examined the evaluate the effect of dried vegetables as a prebiotic and as an intestinal anti-inflammatory in the rat colitis model.

Rats selected to the study were given orally, 500 mg/kg of rat weight of three treatments of dried vegetables: papaya, kale and the mixture of both vegetables (60% of kale plus 40% of papaya) with colitis were induced by intracolonic administration of trinitrobenzene sulfonic acid (TNBS) after the two weeks of treatment.

According to the prebiotic assay, administration of the mixture showed to modulate the bacterial flora in both the healthy rats and rats with colitis induced by TNBS compared to the veggie individual treatment

Furthermore, the application of the mixture showed a strong intestinal anti-inflammatory effect in the colitic rats observed by the reduced levels of pro-inflammatory colonic iNOS, TNFa and IL-1b  expression

Taken altogether, kale used a combination with  papaya may be considered a mixture for the treatment of colitis

Phytochemical Omega -3 Fatty Acids Process Anti-Hyperglycemic Activity, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Although hyperglycemia is a hallmark in patients with diabetes, the condition can also occur to people without diabetes due to a certain medical condition such as pneumonia in the elderly.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition caused by your body's inability to make enough insulin.

The most common causes of hyperglycemia are associated with an uncontrolled diet, improper use of insulin and skip diabetic medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst frequent urination, fatigue (weak, and unintended weight loss. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms of headaches, trouble concentrating and blurred vision.

Most cases of hyperglycemia can be controlled by the following diabetes guidance.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diabetic complications, researchers examined a combination of plant sterols (PS) and omega-3 fatty acids synergistic effect on impaired glucose regulation (IGR).

A total of 200 participants were randomized to receive PS and omega-3 fatty acids (n = 50), PS alone (n = 50), omega-3 fatty acids alone (n = 50), or placebo soybean powder plus placebo capsules (n = 50) for 12 weeks.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Compared to the placebo group, the group receiving the combined intervention exhibited significantly decreased TG, HDL-C, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c).

* Omega-3 fatty acids alone were associated with significant reductions in waistline, TG, FBG, HOMA-IR, and Hs-CRP.

* The combined ap[plication also exerted no significant changes in body weight, BMI, blood pressure, FINS, body fat percentage, visceral fat rating, TC, LDL-C or IL-6.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " this study has demonstrated for the first time that PS, omega-3 fatty acids or the combination thereof significantly improved inflammation, insulin resistance, as well as glucose and lipid metabolism in IGR individuals".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with plant sterols (PS)  may be considered a supplement for the treatment of hyperglycemia-induced by IGR,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Queen Herb Chaste Tree Berry Protects and Restores Internal Eye Structures Against Cataract Formation, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Today, many whole herb ingredients worked together in herbal plants were proven effective in reduced risk and treatment of various diseases with little or no side effects by many respectable scientists through intensive research and studies. However, intake of synthetic versions of single-ingredient isolated from such plants may produce opposite outcomes.

A recent study suggested that chaste Tree Berry may be used to protect the internal structures of the eyes against selenite-induced cataractogenesis.

Selenite cataract is a rapidly-induced, convenient model for the study of age-related (senile) cataracts.

Selenite, named from the Ancient Greek word for the Moon. is a crystal-like substance of mineral gypsum, composed of calcium sulfate dihydrate. It is one of the Chinese herbs used for the treatment of heat and fire syndromes.

Long-term contact with the crystal may cause side effects of headache, unstable emotional expression,..... and dizziness.

Cataractogensis is a process of cataract formation.

Cataract, one of common vision loss in people over age 40 and a leading cause of blindness, is a condition of blur vision caused by clouding of the lens in one or both eye(s).

According to statistics provided by Laser Eye Surgery Hub, In England, 30% of people 65 years or older have a visually impairing cataract in one or both eye(s). 10% of people 65 or over had already had cataract surgery. 95% of cataracts are age-related, usually after age 40.

There are many causes of cataracts, some researchers suggested that aging and injury that cause the changes in the tissue made up the eye's lens, past eye surgery, or medical conditions such as diabetes are the common causes of the disease.

However, some inherited genetic disorders such as chromosome abnormalities, Lowe syndrome,,,,

and neurofibromatosis type 2, also are associated to increase risk of cataracts too.

Believe it or not, cataracts can also be caused by other eye conditions.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belongings to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

According to the University of Kerala, flavonoids found in the chaste tree berry exerted a cataract protective effect in prevented damage of lenticular membrane and abnormal fiber structure in patients with cataract viewed through electron microscopy.

Furthermore, the study also found that chaste tree berry expresses a significant improvement of chaperone property of α-crystallin and soluble protein levels in two-dimensional-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (2D-PAGE) and immunoblot analysis.

α-crystallin, a structural lens protein plays an important role in protecting the eyes against the formation of eye diseases, including cataracts.

Dr. Rooban BN, the lead author said, " FVN modulated selenite induced cataractogenesis in rat pups by preventing loss of chaperone property, various changes in lens proteins, and lens structure, further strengthening its protective role".

Some researchers suggested that the efficacy of chaste tree berry in reduced risk and treatment of cataract may be a result of phytochemical antioxidants activity in scavenging free radicals that cause oxidative stress, loss of calcium homeostasis, calpain activation, and protein insolubilization.

More importantly, in a study of eight-day-old Sprague-Dawley rat pups divided into four groups: Control (G I), Sodium selenite-induced (G II), Sodium selenite+quercetin treated (G III), Sodium selenite+flavonoids from Vitex negundo (FVN) (G IV), group fed with sodium selenite+flavonoids showed normal levels of expression of the lens of water-soluble proteins in compared to other groups.

In fact, pups treated with FVN was found to exhibit the antioxidant effects in modulating biochemical parameters against selenite-induced cataract, the University of Kerala insisted.

In support to the above differentiation, the Sprague-Dawley rat pups of 8 days old divided into control (G I), selenite induced (G II), and selenite + V. negundo treated (G III) with cataract induced by the single subcutaneous injection of sodium selenite (4 mg/kg body weight) on the tenth day and V. negundo (2.5 mg/Kg body weight) administered intraperitoneally from eighth to 15th-day study, researchers showed that group III exerts significantly reduced activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase, lower level of reactive oxygen species, Ca(2+), and thiobarbituric acid reactive substance.

Taking together, Chaste tree berry may process therapeutic potential used for prevention of changes of internal eye structures that stimulated onset of cataract and treatment of cataract with little adverse effects.

However, additional large sample size and multi-center clinical trials with human consumption during the course of the disease are necessary to re-confirm chaste tree berry anti cataract possibility.

Arnica's Bioactive Sesquiterpene Lactones Block the Spreading of Leukemia Cells, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Arnica may have a substantial and sustainable effect in reducing the risk, progression, and treatment of leukemia, some scientists suggested.

The results of these reports were conducted by a number of respectable institutes, including the Chonnam National University and Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität, and published online on the database of medical literature.

Leukemia is a medical condition characterized by cell growth uncontrollable and disorderly produced by the body's blood-forming tissues, including the bone marrow and the lymphatic system. In most cases, it is the result of abnormal white blood cells, which don't function properly.

According to reliable statistics, approximately every 3 minutes one person in the United States (US) is diagnosed with leukemia. New cases of leukemia, lymphoma, and myeloma are expected to account for 10 percent of 1,735,350 new cancer cases diagnosed in the US in 2018.

The exact causes of leukemia are unknown. However, certain risk factors including smoking, mutation gene inherited from parents such as Down syndrome. blood disorders such as myelodysplastic syndrome are associated with an increased risk of the disease.

Some researchers also suggested that people who have previous treatment for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation are at higher risk of cancer development.

Most common symptoms of leukemia include fever or chills, persistent fatigue and weakness frequent or severe infections due to dysfunction of the immune system caused by immature white blood cells produced.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of unattended weight loss, swelling lymph nodes,... and enlarged liver or spleen.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Arnica is a herbaceous species, genus perennial, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine for centuries to treat strains, sprains, and bruises.
Wound healing is a process of repairing after the damage of the skin, tissues, organs, etc.

Leukemia is a chronic condition characterized by high numbers of abnormal white blood cells in the bone marrow.

The ingredients
Helenalin, chamissonolid, Sesquiterpene lactone, lignans of the furofuran, dibenzylbutyrolactone, dibenzylbutyrolactol types, pinoresinol, epipinoresinol, phillygenin, matairesinol, nortrachelogenin, and nortracheloside, six dibenzylbutyrolactol derivatives.

In the investigation of the effect of helenalin, a bioactive chemical compound isolated from Arnica on the human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cell line, researchers found that application of the compound exerts a significant effect in induced HL-60 cell differentiation through the expression of granulocytes, white blood cells with secretory granules in its cytoplasm, at a concentration-dependent manner.

Further analysis, injection of helenalin inhibited HL-60 through activating the protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitor with a function to act as ruboxistaurin in signaling molecules that link to multiple cellular processes of cancer.

Moreover, researchers also found that helenalin also inhibits HL-60 proliferation through activating the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) inhibitors which are used in some cancer therapy in controlling diverse tumor cellular processes such as proliferation, survival, and motility.

Protein kinase C (PKC) is a family of protein kinase enzymes with the function of controlling the expression of other proteins through certain mechanisms.

Additional differentiation also suggested that helenalin induced expression of protein kinase C (PKC) inhibitors without interfering with PKC activity and protein level of PKC beta I and PKC beta II isoforms activities which have been found to promote progression of human cancer.

Interestingly, helenalin also inhibited HL-60 through increasing levels of protein kinase R-like endoplasmic reticulum kinase (PERK) with the function of triggering cancer cell death in a concentration-dependent manner.

Finally, researchers also indicated that the inhibition of HL-60 by helenalin is also carried out through ameliorating levels of NF-kappa, with aberrant activity in enabling leukemia cells to evade apoptosis and stimulate proliferation.

High levels of NF-κB have been detected in most of the patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML).

These results postulated that helenalin isolated from Arnica inhibits the expression of human promyelocytic leukemia HL-60 cell line through many different pathways involved several aspects in tumor cellular differentiation.

More importantly, in the different aspects of the study, Dr. Dirsch VM and colleagues found that sesquiterpene lactones also exerted a significant cytotoxic effect in triggering leukemia cell apoptosis.

According to cell morphology, four compounds found in sesquiterpene lactones, including ambrosin, alantolactone, hymenin, and helenalin induced apoptosis of Jurkat leukemia T cells, individually, through inducing apoptosis of nuclei and the outer surface of the cell membrane.

Taken together, Arnica and its bioactive sesquiterpene lactones, particularly helenalin may be used to ameliorate the risk, progression, and treatment of Leukemia.

However, additional data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of herbal arnica or its' bioactive sesquiterpene lactones during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of garlic anti-leukemia possibilities.
