Calendula (Calendula officinalis) Together with Eyelid Hygiene Are Effective for Patients with Chronic Blepharitis, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Calendula may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of chronic blepharitis, some scientists suggested.

Blepharitis is a condition caused by the eye inflammation of the eyelids or parts of the eyelids as a result of clogging of tiny oil glands located near the base of the eyelashes, affecting people of all ages.

Blepharitis can be classified into 2 types1. Acute blepharitis is referred to as eyelid infection by bacterial, viral, or parasitic pathogens.

2. Chronic blepharitis or lid inflammation is caused by staphylococcal, seborrheic, and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD) that lasts more than 3 months.

According to researchers, chronic blepharitis is difficult to treat due to persistently low-grade inflammation.

The most common causes of blepharitis are bacterial infections. However, the condition also can be caused by a skin condition, such as scalp dandruff or rosacea.

If you experience symptoms of itchiness, redness, flaking, and crusting of the eyelids, burning sensation, irritation, tearing, and red eyes, you may have acute blepharitis, please check with your doctor.

Untreated chronic blepharitis can lead to permanent alterations to the eyelid margin or vision loss from superficial keratopathy (abnormality of the cornea), corneal neovascularization, and ulceration.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Chemical ingredients
Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarines, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin and n-paraffins.

In the findings of the natural ingredient with potential for the treatment of chronic blepharitis without inducing any adverse effects, Dr. Prozornaia LP and Dr. Brzhevskiĭ VV.launched an investigation to examine the herbal Calendula anti chronic blepharitis activity.

In the total of 110 patients aged from 3 to 42 years old were examined to estimate the efficacy of chronic blepharitis treatment, 50 patients are with chronic blepharitis and dry eye syndrome (DES), 28 are with DES due to computer vision syndrome and 32 are with isolated chronic blepharitis.

All patients received eyelid massage and a complex of hygienic procedures was performed using phytoproducts ("Geltec-Medika", Russia): blepharoshampoo, blepharolotion, blepharogel 1 and 2.

After all the procedures were finished, moist warm pads (with blepharolotion and calendula extraction) were applied on the eyelids in 25 patients.

In comparison to massage, moist warm pads treatment exerts a significant effect in the improved efficacy of background therapy in patients with meibomian gland hypofunction but the insignificant effect in patients with excessive meibomian gland secretion.

These results suggested that Herbal Calendula may be effective in the treatment of chronic blepharitis caused by meibomian gland hypofunction if it is used in conjunction with eyelid hygiene.

Papaya Extract and Fermented Papaya Process Anti Diabetes Activity in Vivo and Clinical Diagnosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Papaya may be the next potential target of pharmacological companies to identify the ingredients for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, some scientists suggested.

Diabetes is a chronic and low-grade inflammatory disease caused the insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to neutralize the levels of glucose due to insulin resistance.

There are many causes that facilitate the insufficient levels of insulin produced by the body.

Some researchers suggested it is either caused by cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. and in some cases, insulin resistance is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Is diabetes a low-grade inflammatory disease, Dr. Yansong ZHENG, in the answer to the above question said, " Chemicals from the fat cells could lead to inflammatory response and the levels of certain inflammatory chemicals are often higher in people with T2D compared to people without diabetes as well. Inflammatory responses contribute to the development of T2D and some even insinuated that T2D is actually inflammatory disease".

Moreover, in this review of the interconnection between obesity, inflammation, and insulin resistance and pro-inflammatory cytokines cause insulin resistance in adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and liver by inhibiting insulin signal transduction., Dr. Carl de Luca, the lead author at the University of California, wrote, "The sources of cytokines in insulin-resistant states are the insulin target tissue themselves, primarily fat and liver, but to a larger extent the activated tissue-resident macrophages"

"While the initiating factors of this inflammatory response remain to be fully determined, chronic inflammation in these tissues could cause localized insulin resistance via autocrine/paracrine cytokine signaling and systemic insulin resistance via endocrine cytokine signaling all of which contribute to the abnormal metabolic state.

These results indicated a strong relationship between chronic low-grade inflammation and diabetes caused by the immune mistakenly targets the tissues of adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and liver in the initiation of insulin resistance, the major cause of diabetes onset.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belongs to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries

Chemical constituents of papaya include
Alkaloids, Cardenolides, Anthraquinones, Saponins, Tannin, phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin, Benzyl glucosinolate, benzyl isothiocyanate, 5-(Hydroxymethyl)-2-furancarboxaldehyde, 2,3-dihydro-3,5-dihydroxy-6-methyl-4H-pyran-4-one and 1,3-dihydroxy-2-propanone, etc.

In the reaffirming of the use of unripe pawpaw (Carica papaya Linn) fruit for the management or treatment of diabetes mellitus in folklore medicine.,researchers launched an investigation to examine the inhibitory effects of the aqueous extract of different parts of unripe pawpaw fruit on key enzymes linked to type 2 diabetes (α-amylase and α-glucosidase) and sodium nitroprusside (SNP)-induced lipid peroxidation in rat pancreas in vitro.

All the extracts from papaya exerted a strong effect in the inhibition of α-amylase (IC50=0.87-1.11 mg/mL), α-glucosidase (IC50=1.76-2.64 mg/mL) and SNP-induced lipid peroxidation (IC50=1.99-2.42 mg/mL) in a dose-dependent manner.

The combination of the flesh, seed, and peel in equal amounts had the highest inhibitory effect on α-amylase and α-glucosidase activities compared to extract-treated rats.

Dr.Oboh G, after taking into account co and confounders, said, "Strong inhibitory activities of the unripe pawpaw fruit against key enzymes linked to type 2 diabetes and SNP-induced lipid peroxidation in rat pancreas could be part of the mechanism by which unripe pawpaw is used in the management/prevention of diabetes mellitus in folk medicine".

Furthermore, in the study involving diabetes induced in rats by intraperitoneal administration of 60 mg/kg of streptozotocin (STZ) followed by the administered aqueous extract of C. papaya in three different doses (0.75, 1.5, and 3 g/100 mL) as drinking water to both diabetic and non-diabetic animals during 4 weeks.

After examining the blood samples collected from the treatment group compared to the non-diabetic group, the researcher found that
* The aqueous extract of Carica papaya (0.75 g and 1.5 g/100 mL) significantly decreased blood glucose levels (p<0.05) in diabetic rats.

* Low plasma insulin levels did not change after treatment in diabetic rats, but they significantly increased in non-diabetic animals.

* Pancreatic islet cells were normal in non-diabetic treated animals, whereas in diabetic treated rats, C. papaya could help islet regeneration manifested as the preservation of cell size.

* In the liver of diabetic treated rats, C. papaya prevented hepatocyte disruption, as well as accumulation of glycogen and lipids.

* An antioxidant effect of C. papaya extract was also detected in diabetic rats.

Dr. Juárez-Rojop IE, the lead authors said, "aqueous extract of C. papaya exerted a hypoglycemic and antioxidant effect; it also improved the lipid profile in diabetic rats. In addition, the leaf extract positively affected the integrity and function of both liver and pancreas"

These results suggested that the aqueous extract of Carica papaya exerts a significant inhibitory effect in diabetes rats through mechanisms involving many aspects.

A short-term study by the University of Mauritius, also found that supplementation of fermented papaya also exhibited the antihyperglycemic effect in the management of diabetes and for those at risk for cardiovascular disease, neurological disease, and other conditions worsened by overt inflammation and oxidative stress.

Taken all together, papaya may be considered a functional food for the prevention and adjunct therapy for the treatment of diabetes through its antihyperglycemic activity without inducing any adverse effects

Banana, the Tasty Fruit Is Found to Process Anti-Hypertension Property, According to Clinical Diagnosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found an inexpensive whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects, some studies found.

Banana is the common name of a genus of tropical herbaceous plants. It can grow from 3 to 9 m and belongs to the family of the lily and the orchid.

Hypertension is a medical condition characterized by abnormally high blood pressure. one of the preventable risk factors of heart disease associated with the cluster of metabolic syndrome.

In other words, high blood pressure means raising the pressure in your heart. the condition can be acute or chronic.

Blood pressure is the force of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood.

Chronic high blood pressure epidemiologically can damage the arteries and causes blood clots to form in the arteries, blocking the blood flow and contributing to the onset of cardiovascular and neuro diseases.

Although certain chronic conditions such as kidney disease are found to associate with chronic hypertension which can only be treated by addressing the usable condition, the syndrome in the Western world is mostly a result of unhealthy diet and obesity.

According to a joint study led by the Tecnológico de Monterrey, that examined the effects of Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns and the incident hypertension in Mexican women, the comparison of participants who followed the diet loaded heavily with vegetables, fruits, and legumes and who follow the Western and Modern Mexican dietary patterns loaded heavily with processed meats, fast foods, and red meat; and finally the third component was loaded heavily with corn tortillas, hot peppers, and sodas suggested that

* The multivariable-adjusted odds of hypertension in the highest quartile of the W pattern were 24% higher than the odds for individuals in the lowest quartile.

* Women in the highest quartile of the MM pattern had 15% higher odds than women in the lowest quartile.

* And The Fruits & Vegetables (FV) pattern was not significantly associated with hypertension.

These results strongly indicated high blood pressure can be prevented by following a healthy diet with high fruits and vegetables, whole grain and low saturated and trans fat, red meat, and processed foods.

On finding a natural chemical compound or whole food for the prevention and treatment of hypertension, researchers evaluate the corosolic acid (CRA) antihypertensive activity, a constituent of banana leaves.

The experiment included Six-week-old male SHR-cp rats, an animal model of metabolic syndrome were fed a high-fat diet containing 0.072% CRA for 14 weeks.
Treatment with CRA lowered blood pressure, which was elevated in control animals, by 10% after 8 weeks, and serum-free fatty acids by 21% after 2 weeks.

Oxidative stress markers thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances and 8-hydroxydeoxyguanosine in the tested animal were also decreased by 27% and 59%, respectively, after 2 weeks.

Furthermore, CRA treatment also reduced the levels of myeloperoxidase markers, 3-nitrotyrosine, and 3-chlorotyrosine, by 38% and 39%, respectively, after 10 weeks, and decreased the levels of high sensitivity C-reactive protein, markers of inflammation, after 6 weeks.

The presence of a marker of inflammation is the indication of inflammation.

These results clearly suggested that CRA ameliorate hypertension, and oxidative stress caused by the inflammation in SHR-cp rats.

Dr. Yamaguchi Y, the lead scientist said, "CRA can be beneficial for preventing atherosclerosis-related diseases that are an increasing health care problem worldwide".

Moreover, In a human study to test the effect of banana on cold stress-induced hypertension, peak expiratory flow rate, and plasma ACE activity, researchers showed that

*Banana treatment reduced the systolic blood pressure (P < 0.005), diastolic blood pressure (P < 0.025), and mean arterial blood pressure (P < 0.005) during cold stress in healthy volunteers compared to controls.

* There were no significant changes in heart rate and peak expiratory flow rate but only a significant decrease in plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme activity after banana treatment.

Levels of plasma angiotensin-converting enzyme are high in patients with hypertension.

Dr. Sarkar C, the lead scientist said' "Banana decreased the rise of systolic blood pressure and diastolic blood pressure in healthy volunteers subjected to cold stress test without much effect on heart rate and peak expiratory flow rate".

Taken altogether, bananas may be considered a functional fruit for the prevention and treatment of hypertension with no side effects.

Herbal Calendula May Process Anti Cancers Property, Scientists Find

Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of cancer, according to the studies.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in some specific tissues and organs due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Depending on the stage and specific types of cancer, some cancers do not cause any symptoms such as liver cancer.

However, at the later stage, the larger size of the tumor may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to localized bleeding and pain accompanied by the general symptoms shared by other types of cancer.

At this stage, cancer cells may also travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs through fields and blood circulation, leading to secondary metastasis.

There are some common factors shared by many types of cancer such as family and personal history, ethnicity, and gender, some researchers found that an unhealthy lifestyle is one of the major risks in the induction of the diseases.

Dr. Katzke, Verena A Ph.D., the lead scientist in the concern of lifestyle and cancer risk, wrote, "Lifestyle factors, such as smoking, alcohol consumption, obesity, diet, and physical inactivity, and also reproductive and hormonal factors are considered as causes of cancer and main targets for primary prevention".

And, " While smoking, which may be responsible for around 20% to 30% of all incident cancers, is clearly the strongest lifestyle-related risk factor overall, followed by alcohol consumption and obesity, the importance of specific factors for individual cancer types and subtypes varies greatly.".

In other words, by changing to a healthy lifestyle, the risk of cancers can be reduced substantially.

Calendula is also known as pot marigold, annual or perennial herbaceous plants of about 12–20 species of genus Calendula, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Southern Europe.

The herb medicine has been used in herbal medicine as spasmolytic, spasmogenic, inflammatory effects and to treat abdominal cramps, wound healing, skin diseases, colitis, constipation, etc.

Besides major chemical constituents of triterpenoids, flavonoids, coumarins, quinones, volatile oil, carotenoids, and amino acids, the herb also contains loliolide (calendin), calendulin, and n-paraffins.

Researchers on finding natural chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer investigated the cytotoxic anti-tumor and immunomodulatory activities and in vivo antitumor effect of Laser Activated Calendula Extract (LACE), a novel extract of the plant Calendula Officinalis (Asteraceae).

The tumor cell lines included in the study are derived from leukemias, melanomas, fibrosarcomas, and breast, prostate, cervix, lung, pancreas, and colorectal cancer.

The LACE extract showed a potent in vitro inhibition of tumor cell proliferation in a wide variety of human and murine tumor cell lines, ranged from 70 to 100%.
The cancer cell inhibition was attributed to the protein associated with a cell cycle arrest in G0/G1 phase and induced apoptosis.

Furthermore, the intraperitoneal injection or oral administration of LACE extract in nude mice inhibits in vivo tumor growth of Ando-2 melanoma cells and prolongs the survival day of the mice.

However, human peripheral blood lymphocyte (PBL) and NKL cell lines, lACE extract exerted an opposite effect.

These results suggested that LACE aqueous extract has 2 potential anti-tumor therapeutic effects: cytotoxic tumor cell activity and lymphocyte activation on selected cancer cell lines.

Moreover, in male mice injected with B16F-10 melanoma cells through the tail vein and simultaneously treated with C.officinalis flower extract. researcher showed that
* Simultaneous administration of C. officinalis extract to tumor-bearing C57BL/6 mice reduced the lung tumor nodules by 74% with a 43.3% increase in lifespan

* Elevated levels of inflammatory expression including the proinflammatory cytokines were found to be significantly lowered in the C. officinalis treated animals.

* The extract also inhibited the expression of the matrix and enzymes associated with cancer proliferation and activated the family protein associated with the modulation of cancer cell transcriptional profile.

Taken altogether, herbal Calendula may be considered a safe functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of cancers with no side effects, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cascara Sagrada May Process Anti Breast Cancer Activity, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cascara sagrada may be the next generation of natural chemotherapy for the treatment of breast cancer, according to studies.

Breast cancer is a medical and chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue, including the milk ducts (Ductal carcinoma) or the lobules (Lobular carcinoma) that supply the ducts with milk.

At the advanced, the large tumor may press on the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, leading to bleeding and severe pain. Cancer cells from the breast can also travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs at this stage.

The most common breast cancer secondary metastasis is the liver, brain, bones, or lungs.

According to the statistics, in 2010, over 250,000 new cases of breast cancer were diagnosed in women in the U.S. alone and the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during a lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of breast cancer. However, family and personal history, women with dense breast tissue, use of hormone replacement therapy and oral contraceptives, genetic preposition, particularly BRCA1 and 2, tall adult heigh are some prevalent risk factors of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that the increase in the prevalence of breast cancer in overweight and obesity is also a major concern of the scientists' community.

Dr. Manuel Picon‐Ruiz, the lead scientists in the observation of obesity in the risk of breast cancer wrote, "Obesity is associated both with a higher risk of developing breast cancer, particularly in postmenopausal women, and with worse disease outcome for women of all ages" and "... the effects of obesity to increase local and circulating proinflammatory cytokines, promote tumor angiogenesis and stimulate the most malignant cancer stem cell population to drive cancer growth, invasion, and metastasis".

And, "The effects of recent lifestyle interventions to decrease sex steroids, insulin/insulin‐like growth factor‐1 pathway activation and inflammatory biomarkers associated with worse breast cancer outcomes in obesity also are discussed. Although many observational studies indicate that exercise with weight loss is associated with improved breast cancer outcome".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of breast cancer is significantly elevated in the obese population compared to healthy adults.

Cascara sagrada is a species of buckthorn, genus Rhamnus, belonging to the family Rhamnaceae, native to western North America, it's bark has been used in traditional medicine for gastrointestinal support. and it is thought to have a laxative and natural cleansing, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cascara Sagrada include Aloe-emodin, Anthrquinone glycosides (Barbaloin Cascarosides A, B, C, and D ChrysaloinFrangul), Chrysophanol, Emodin, Heterodianthrones palmidin A, B, and C, dianthrones, Oxanthrone, Rhein, Tannins, etc.

Researchers on clarification of the effects of a bioactive ingredient emodin found abundantly in herbal Cascara Sagrada and Rhubarb. against breast cancer, examined the compound activity on estrogen receptor α (ERα).

The application of emodin demonstrated the capability in inhibiting breast cancer cell proliferation by suppressing the ER α protein levels, through blocking the ER α transcriptional activation.

Furthermore, emodin treatment led to the dissociation of heat shock protein 90 (HSP90) which plays a critical role in stabilizing the proteins against heat stress and ER α and increased ER α ubiquitination in initiation cell degradation.

Dr. Huang PH and colleagues in the final report wrote, "emodin,....specifically suppress breast cancer cell proliferation by targeting ER α protein stability through distinct mechanisms".

In order to reveal the additional information of emodin in the inhibition of breast cancer, researchers investigated the anticancer effects of emodin on growth inhibition, apoptosis induction, and the expression of apoptosis-related genes in MCF-7 cells.

Emodin showed significant growth inhibitory effects on MCF-7 cells with IC₅₀ = 7.22 µg/ml (∼30 μM) and exerted a concentration-dependent inhibitory effect on the colony-forming ability of MCF-7 cells with IC₅₀ = 7.60 µg/ml (∼30 µM).

The bioactive compound induced breast cancer death observed by the single-strand DNA breakage and DNA fragmentation, in emodin-treated MCF-7 cells.

Moreover, emodin efficacy in causing breast cancer cells apoptosis was attributed to the activation of the gene expression involved the modulation of the immune response to stress and inhibition of the proteins associated with cancer cell proliferation and survival.

Dr. Li WY, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "emodin could induce growth inhibition and apoptosis in MCF-7 cells through the modulation of the expression of apoptosis-related genes".

Taken altogether, herbal Cascara Sagrada (Rhamnus purshiana) processed bioactive emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for the treatment of breast cancer, pending the confirmation of a large sample size and multicenter human study.

Will Acadia Honey Be Used to Replace Prednisolone for Acute and Chronic Pain Relief?

By Kyle J. Norton

Antinociception is the process that blocks sensory neuron response to potentially damaging stimuli associated with pain.

Pain is a natural reaction with an aim to protect our body against danger or damage.

Acute pain is the pain that lasts less few weeks.

Chronic pain is pain that lasts more than 6 months.

Chronic pain has been found to be the most common reason for someone to see his/her physician.

Chronic pain in some cases was a major symptom of a medical condition that can only be treated physically and mentally through pain management.

However, most cases of chronic pain are associated with injury, such as a back sprain, or there may be an ongoing cause, such as illness.

Chronic pain can interfere with a person's quality of life and general functioning.

According to statistics provided by Dr. Donald Schopflocher, lead scientists in the evaluation of the prevalence of chronic pain in Canada, researchers wrote, "The prevalence of chronic pain for adults older than 18 years of age was 18.9%".

And, "Chronic pain prevalence was greater in older adults, and females had a higher prevalence at older ages compared with males. Approximately one-half of those with chronic pain reported suffering for more than 10 years. Approximately one-third of those reporting chronic pain rated the intensity in the very severe range".

Chronic pain according to the study is very common, affecting approximately 19% of Canadian over 18 years of age, mostly in older adults.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is a miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

Researchers on finding a potential natural whole food for pain relief examined the Tualang honey (Fēng Mì) and prednisolone on the nociceptive response in male Sprague-Dawley rats.

35 male Sprague-Dawley rats selected for the study were divided into 5 groups. Each group was given either distilled water, Tualang honey (0.2, 1.2 or 2.4 g/kg), or prednisolone (10 mg/kg) for 10 days.

Where prednisolone is a steroid medication used for pain relief.

According to the response to a noxious thermal stimulus using the tail-flick test on Day 10, the tail-flick latency time was significantly higher in the groups that received 1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg of Tualang honey and 10 mg/kg of prednisolone, compared to the control group.

Compared to the groups treated with prednisolone or distilled water, Tualuang honey treatments showed no effects on other parameters.

In other words, the Tualang honey treatment group showed signs of abnormal behavior, such as total food pellet intake or weight loss.

Dr. Aziz CB, the lead scientist at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, said, "preemptive administration of Tualang honey (1.2 g/kg and 2.4 g/kg) and prednisolone (10 mg/kg) had reduced the pain responses".

Based on these results, Tualang honey processes a strong antinociceptive better than those of corticosteroids (prednisolone).

In order to reveal more information about the honey antinociceptive activity, researchers compared several kinds of honey pain relief efficacy.

Acacia honey showed the most effective dose-dependent antinociceptive activity compared to the untreated group in tail-flick and paw-withdrawal tests, respectively.

Most tested honeys exerted antinociceptive activity of reaching the maximum at 60 min post-treatment then gradually decreased, whereas the activity of indomethacin was persistent at 120 min post-treatment.

Interestingly, the major constituents found in honey such as fructose, glucose, maltose, and sucrose used alone do not demonstrate any effect compared to the whole food.

The results strongly suggested that there must be other compounds in the honey that process a significant antinociceptive property or all active ingredients in honey work together to stimulate the pain relief activity.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly, Tualang and Acacia honey may be considered a functional remedy for acute and chronic pain relief, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Bilberry Maybe Effective Against Intestinal Cancer with No Side Effects, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Intestinal cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of the intestines.

Most cases of intestinal cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the internal tissue. At the advanced stage, after penetrating deep layers of the intestines, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the intestine to infect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Certain factors such as being overweight or obese, physical inactivity, certain types of diet. smoking excessive alcohol drinking, family and personal history, and the increase in age are associated with an increased risk of intestinal cancer.

Some researchers suggested that the increased incidence of intestinal cancer in the Western world may be associated with the promotion of a high-fat Western diet over the past many decades.

Dr. Manon D. Schulz, the lead scientist in the investigation of the effects of high-fat diet-mediated dysbiosis promotes intestinal carcinogenesis suggested, "Several aspects common to a Western lifestyle, including obesity and decreased physical activity, are known risks for gastrointestinal cancers. There is substantial evidence suggesting that diet profoundly affects the composition of the intestinal microbiota. Moreover, there is now unequivocal evidence linking dysbiosis to cancer development".

And, "Undoubtedly various factors contribute to the etiology of intestinal cancer, but there are compelling arguments to include high-fat diet (HFD) and composition of the gut microbiota as key risk factors".

The results strongly suggested that the risk of intestinal cancer can be decreased by changing the diet pattern from the Western diet to a traditional diet with higher fruits and vegetables with a lower intake of red meat and saturated and trans fat and processed foods.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The herbal plant has been used as foods and herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis examined the
intestinal carcinogenesis--relationship with tissue anthocyanin levels in an animal model.

Selected Apc(Min) mice ingested C3G or Mirtoselect at 0.03, 0.1, or 0.3% in the diet for 12 weeks, and intestinal adenomas were examined.

Where Mirtoselect, is an anthocyanin mixture from bilberry, and isolated cyanidin-3-glucoside (C3G) is the most abundant anthocyanin in the diet.

C3G and Mirtoselect at the highest doses decreased the adenoma numbers by 45% (p < 0.001) or 30% (p < 0.05), respectively, compared to controls.

According to the intestinal mucosa and urinary assays, anthocyanins were found at the analytical detection limit in the plasma and at quantifiable levels.

More precisely, the total anthocyanin levels in mice on C3G or Mirtoselect were 43 ng and 8.1 microg/g tissue, respectively, in the intestinal mucosa, and 7.2 and 12.3 microg/ml in the urine.
These results suggested that C3G and Mirtoselect in the Apc(Min) mouse processed a chemotherapeutic effect for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Moreover, in order to reveal more information about berries anti intestinal tumorigenesis, researchers examined the different phenolic profiles on intestinal tumorigenesis in multiple intestinal neoplasia/+ mice.

Mice selected for the study were fed a high-fat AIN93-G diet (Con) or AIN93-G diets containing 10% (w:w) freeze-dried bilberry, lingonberry (LB), or cloudberry (CB) for 10 wk.

All 3 berries significantly inhibited the formation of intestinal adenomas as indicated by a 15-30% reduction in tumor numbers.

According to Western blotting and immunohistochemistry, all 3 berries inhibited the levels of decreased levels of proteins associated with cell cycle division.

Additionally, all 3 berries exerted early protection of the cells in the intestine against the alternation of cell DNA to facilitate the onset of the disease.

The findings strongly suggested the use of berries as chemopreventive components for the treatment of intestinal carcinogenesis.

Taken altogether, bilberry may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of
intestinal cancer, pending the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter study.
