Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit the Onset of Glioblastoma, in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Glioblastoma or glioblastoma (also called GBM) caused mostly by the abnormal astrocytic cells and dead cells (necrosis) is considered one of the most aggressive cancers induced by the alternation of cells originated from the brain, including the cerebral hemispheres.

In other words, primary glioblastoma may arise as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

Most patients with GBM experience symptoms of brain swelling caused by the overexpression of the fluid surrounding the tumor.

Conventionally, due to the nature of rapid growth, surgery is necessary to relieve the brain pressure and remove the tumor as much as possible, followed by radiation and chemotherapy.

Most cases of GBM are diagnosed at an older age with a median age of 64. Some researchers suggested that aging with the change of body function may be one of the major risk factors that cause the incidence.

In the US, the median age of glioblastoma diagnosed is 64 years and the incidence of the disease onset is 1.6 times higher in males compared to females.

Furthermore, the condition is 2 times higher in Caucasians compared to Africans and Afro-Americans.

GBM is deadly, patients with GBM have a median survival of less than one year and less than 2% of patients survive three years or more.

According to statistics, most patients diagnosed with cancer die within 12 to 15 months. Less than 5% of patients are survived longer than five years.

If you are male you are at 1.5 higher risks of glioblastoma, compared to the female's counterpart.

The causes of glioblastoma are unknown, some researchers suggested that genetic preposition and environmental factors, previous radiotherapy, a weakened immune system may be some risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

On finding a potential plant that process neuro-protective researchers compared the effects of
Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate (ITC) derived from cruciferous vegetables on glioblastoma.

According to the differentiation,
* SFN can rapidly cross the BBB and accumulate in the CNS after i.p. administration [76,77] to exert its anti-cancer activity.

* Furthermore, the application of SFN induces apoptosis and inhibits both growth and invasion of GBM cells.

SFN can overcome the chemoresistance of tumor cells.

More precisely, the effects of SFN inhibited the profession by focusing on pro-apoptotic, anti-invasion, anti-proliferative, and anti-chemo/radioresistance activities.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables consisting of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of atherothrombotic diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Protects the Risk of Pre-Diabetes in Health Individuals and Type 2 Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Glycemic response is a change in blood glucose after consuming carbohydrate-containing food compared to the Glycemic Index (GI) which is a ranking of carbohydrate-containing foods according to their effect on blood glucose levels.

Some researchers suggested that the glycemic response is the change of blood glucose after the intake of a food or meal.

Most healthy individuals have normal blood glucose and insulin levels that rise within the range after eating, then return to the fasting levels over a short period of time.

According to the epidemiological studies, controlling the glycaemic response with the healthy range, can reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Including additional fiber into a meal or food may have a strong implication in reducing the levels of glucose shortly after intake.

Insulin resistance, a hallmark in patients with type II diabetes is the condition in which the cells in tissues that start to resist or ignore the signal of the hormone insulin.

In other words, the insulin produced by the body no longer can convert glucose to energy even with the presence of the hormone insulin, leading to high levels of glucose in the bloodstream.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, approximately, 1 in 3 people in the United States have prediabetes, including half of those age 60 and older.

People with insulin resistance have been found to increase the risk for prediabetes, type 2 diabetes and other serious health problems, such as cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Although researchers do not know the exact cause of insulin resistance, they do not certain risk factors such as genetic preposition, aging, and ethnicity are associated with the onset of the condition.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle that causes excess body weight, too much belly fat, smoking and lack of exercise are the most prevalent factors in the Western world.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for reducing the risk of diabetes researchers examined the effects of two fig fruit extracts (FFEs) on postprandial glycemic and insulinemic responses.

The standard glucose drink and randomized, double-blind crossover study included 10 healthy adults consumed 4 test beverages containing FFE with postprandial glucose and insulin assessed at regular intervals over 2 h to determine GI and II responses.

According to the experiemnetal reslultd, test beverages containing 200 mg FFE-50× and 1200 mg FFE-10× significantly reduced GI values by -25% tP = 0.001) and -24% (P = 0.002), respectively.

Furthermore, two lower doses of FFE also reduced GI values compared with the reference drink (by approximately -14%), with no statistical significance.

Moreover, addition of FFE to the glucose solution also was found to induce a significantly reduced  values at all dosages and display a clear dose-response reduction: FFE-50× at 100 mg and 200 mg (-14% (P < 0.05) and -24% (P = 0.01), respectively) and FFE-10× at 600 mg and 1200 mg (-16% (P < 0.05) and -24% (P = 0.01), respectively).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " FFE supplementation is a promising nutritional intervention for the management of acute postprandial glucose and insulin homeostasis, and it is a possible adjunctive treatment for glycemic management of chronic metabolic disorders such as prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus"

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of prediabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Fish Oils Process a Positive Effect on Plasma Lipids in Healthy Individuals

By Kyle J. Norton

Lipid refers to cholesterol and triglycerides.

Hypertriglyceridemia is a health issue associated with abnormally high blood levels triglycerides,
Triglycerides are body fat found in humans derived from glycerol and saturated, monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated fatty acid.

The triglycerides are stored in your fat cells to energy in the future when the body's needs.
if the levels of triglycerides are above 500 mg/dL (above 5.7 mmol/L), you have high blood triglyceride.

Abnormal high levels of triglycerides have been found to induce symptoms of gastrointestinal pain. difficulty breathing, memory loss, dementia and yellowish deposits of fat on or around the eyelids.

Hyperlipidemia is a medical condition of abnormally high levels of cholesterol and fat in the bloodstream.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million Americans and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

Cholesterol produced by the liver and absorbed through diet to build cell walls, produce steroid hormone and vitamin D and aid digestive, the primary of triglycerides function is to store as unused calories and provide your body with energy.

The healthy ratio of low-density lipoprotein (LDL)/high-density lipoprotein (HDL) is ant numbers that are less than 4.

Fish oil derived from the tissues of fishes, containing a high amount of the omega-3 fatty acids.
The three main components of omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic disease, researchers launch a first-in-human trial of LCMUFA-rich saury fish oil supplementation effect on plasma lipids.

The double-blind, randomized, crossover clinical trial included 30 healthy normolipidemic adults (BMI <25 kg/m2; mean TG, 84 mg/dL) who were treated by either 12 g of sauredy oil (3.5 g of LCMUFA and 3.4 g of omega-3 FAs) or identical capsules with control oil (a mixture of sardine and olive oil; 4.9 g of shorter-chain MUFA oleate and 3 g of omega-3 FAs).

According to the results, saury oil supplementation was safe and resulted in LDL particle counts 12% lower than control oil.

On a linear mixed effect model, saury oil also showed a minor effect on increasing HDL particle size (9.8 nm vs 9.7 nm; P < .05), compared to the control oil which increased LDL-C by only 7.5% compared with baseline.

Most importantly, saury oil exerted similar effects compared to  control oil on lowering plasma TG levels, VLDL, and TG-rich lipoprotein particle counts (by ∼16%, 25%, and 35%, respectively; P < .05), and increasing HDL-C and cholesterol efflux capacity (by ∼6% and 8%, respectively; P < .05) compared with baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Saury oil supplementation is well tolerated and has beneficial effects on several cardiovascular parameters, such as LDL particle counts, HDL particle size, and plasma TG levels".

Taken altogether, fish oil may be considered a functional food for the protection of cardiovascular parameters, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cocoa Processes Antiproliferative effects in Cancers

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer cell proliferation is a rapid reproduction of invasive cells in a malignant tumors.

In other words, instead of dividing with a number of times before replacing by new cells, the cancer cells can divide indefinitely.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ, caused by irregular cell growth in the tissue or specific organ in the body due to the alternation of cell DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Anti-proliferative activity is the process to inhibit cell growth antiproliferative effects on tumor cells.

The cocoa bean or simply cocoa is the dried and fully fermented seed of Theobroma cacao, which appeared in different cultures worldwide for hundreds of years, particularly in many ancient South American countries.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of different cocoa polyphenols extracts, alone or combined with beta-sitosterol, on two human prostate cancer cell lines (nonmetastatic 22Rv1 cells and metastatic DU145 cells) and a normal human prostate cell line (RWEP-1).

According to the experimental analysis of cells treated independently with five products from 1 to 72 h: (1/) synthetic beta-sitosterol, (2/) a cocoa polyphenols extract supplemented with beta-sitosterol, (3/) three different cocoa polyphenols extracts naturally containing beta-sitosterol, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenols extracts induced a complete inhibition of growth of metastatic and nonmetastatic cancer cell lines.

Furthermore, cocoa polyphenols extracts alone were more active against local cancer cells than against metastatic cells,.

However, at the highest tested concentration, cocoa polyphenols extract alone is not effective on normal prostate cell lines.

On the other hand, beta-sitosterol induced low growth inhibition of both cancer cell lines, compared to cocoa polyphenols extracts which is significantly more active and showed strong and fast inhibition of cell growth than beta-sitosterol alone.

There is no synergy or addition that was observed when beta-sitosterol was tested together with the cocoa polyphenols extract.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Our results show that cocoa polyphenols extracts have an antiproliferative effect on prostate cancer cell growth but not on normal cells, at the highest tested concentration".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of stomach cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Kale (Brassica Oleracea) Reduces the Risk of Coronary Artery Disease in Patients with High Blood Cholesterol

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular diseases are a class of conditions associated with heart and blood vessels. Anything that affects the normal heart and blood vessel functioning is considered risk factors of the diseases, including the heart's muscle, valves or rhythm, and blockage of blood vessels.

According to the statistics, in the US, approximately, 610,000 people die of heart disease every year that's 1 in every 4 deaths. The disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the location that affects the functioning of the heart and blood vessels, including atherosclerosis caused by the blockade of the blood vessel due to the accumulation of plaques in the arteries and arrhythmias caused by abnormal heart rhythms.

Coronary artery disease is a condition of narrowing coronary arteries that lead to blockage of the blood flow in the arteries as a result of hardening arterial wall, cholesterol building up in the arteries, chemicals, such as cadmium clog up arteries, etc.

The disease has been found to affect the small blood vessels that supply blood and oxygen to the heart.

Coronary artery disease (CHD) is the leading cause of death in the United States.

According to statistics, coronary artery disease is the most common type of heart disease that causes the death of over 370,000 people every year, representing 28% of all death in the United States.

Sadly, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, approximately, 735,000 Americans have a heart attack each year.

What causes plaques building up on the arterial is debatable. However, researchers suggested that the Western diet is associated with a significantly increased risk of coronary artery disease.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belong to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. Since kale's leave is highly nutritious and easy to grow with a range of long season from the middle of winter through the beginning of spring, it is cultivated as foods in most parts of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers evaluated the effect of 3-month kale (Brassica oleracea acephala) juice supplementation on coronary artery disease.

The study included 32 men with hypercholesterolemia (> 200 mg/dL) recruited after annual health examinations among the faculty and staff at university and consumed 150 mL of kale juice per day for a 12-week intervention period.

Based on the blood samples used to evaluate biochemical profiles before and after supplementation, researchers found that
* Serum concentrations of HDL-cholesterol, and HDL- to LDL-cholesterol ratio were significantly increased by 27% and 52%, respectively.

* The LDL-cholesterol concentration and the atherogenic index were significantly reduced by 10% (P=0.0007) and 24.2% (P<0.0001), respectively without affecting body mass index, waist and hip circumferences, or nutrient intakes after three months of supplementation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Regular meals supplementation with kale juice can favorably influence serum lipid profiles and antioxidant systems, and hence contribute to reducing the risks of coronary artery disease in male subjects with hyperlipidemia".

Taken altogether, kale may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of coronary artery disease in patients with hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Kitchen Spice Turmeric Processes a Strong Antimicrobial Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Antimicrobial activity is a process that kills microorganisms or stops their growth. In humans, these actions are carried out daily by the immune system.

In other words, antimicrobial activity is the process of killing or inhibiting the disease-causing microbes, including the use of antibiotics for the treatment of infectious diseases caused by bacterias and fungi.

Infection is a processive condition caused by the battle of the invasion of microorganisms and the host immune white blood cells. Microorganism during the battle might produce toxins which can lead to the initiation of infection-related transmissible disease or communicable disease.

In acute infections, the systematic immune system responds properly to the invasive pathogen, leading to a brief battle after which the immune system is always victorious.

However, chronic infections occur when the immune cannot kill off the invasive stimuli in the acute phase of infection, leading to chronic infectious diseases.

The most common diseases associated with microbial infection include
* Diseases caused by bacteria are totally dependent on the types of bacterias, such as pneumonia, caused by Streptococcus and Pseudomonas, and foodborne illnesses caused by bacteria such as Shigella, Campylobacter, and Salmonella.
* Diseases caused by the virus include smallpox. the common cold and different types of flu. measles, mumps, rubella, chickenpox, and shingles. hepatitis. herpes and cold sores. polio. rabies, Ebola and Hanta fever.

* Diseases caused by parasites are malaria, trichomoniasis, giardiasis, cryptosporidiosis, and toxoplasmosis.

* Diseases caused by fungi aspergillosis usually occurs in patients with lung diseases or weakened immune systems and Candidiasis is caused by the yeast Candida.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of infectious diseases, researchers examined the effects of turmeric extract containing chitosan-based film produced with casting procedure and cross-linked with sodium sulfate antibacterial activity.

The application showed a strong antimicrobial activity against Salmonella and Staphylococcus aureus by plate count agar technique.

Chitosan films showed a better antimicrobial activity with turmeric incorporation, compared to lone turmeric injection.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " incorporated chitosan films with enhanced antimicrobial activity and film stiffness can be suggested as a promising application for food packaging".

Taken altogether, turmeric used alone or incorporated chitosan-based film may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment microbial infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Foods Brassica rapa vegetable Protects the Kidney Against Injury in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys, a pair of the bean-shaped organ in the human body not only filter out blood but also balances the body fluids by eliminating them and removes them through urinary secretion.

Additionally, the kidney accompanied by the liver and skin form also detoxes the toxins in the body.

Kidney disease is a medical condition associated with a gradually reduced function of the kidney.

Kidney diseases can be classified into 2 types
* Acute kidney disease is a sudden episode of kidney failure or kidney damage associated with reduced kidney function in keeping the right balance of fluid in the body, that lasts a few hours or a few days.

* Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a condition of kidney damage, leading to a decreased level of kidney function that lasts more than three months.

Depending on the severity of renal damage, patients may experience symptoms of decreased urine output, fluid retention, that lead to swelling in the legs, ankles or feet, fatigue, nausea, and physical weakness

Renal protection is a strategy that protects the kidney against injury or damage. In other words, renal protection is a process that maintains the function of the kidneys.

Renal toxicity or nephrotoxicity in most cases is toxicity in the kidneys caused by toxic chemicals and medications.

The most common symptoms of renal toxicity may cause reduced kidney function in eliminating toxins, leading to a reduced amount of urine. swelling of your legs, ankles, and feet from retention of fluids.

In a serious case, the condition can also result in unexplained shortness of breath. excessive drowsiness or fatigue. persistent nausea. confusion. pain or pressure in your chest.

Depending on the severity of kidney damage, kidney disease can range from mild to severe, including kidney failure.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of renal diseases, researchers examined the effect of 3,3'‑Diindolylmethane (DIM), a naturally derived indole compound found in the Brassica family of vegetables on kidney injury.

The study included male BALB/c mouse models of AKI that were established using intraperitoneal injections of 10 mg/kg LPS followed by the DIM (40 mg/kg) administered intraperitoneally 24 and 2 h before LPS exposure.
According to the tested analysis,
* DIM significantly mitigated histopathological changes in the kidneys and improved the levels of blood urea nitrogen and serum creatinine.

* DIM also suppressed the LPS‑induced production of reactive oxygen species in the induction of cell apoptosis.

* DIM treatment also significantly decreased the expression of NADPH oxidase 2 (NOX2) and NOX4 which results in oxidative stress in LPS‑treated mice.

More precisely, DIM protected the kidney cell integrity against all parameters expressed by the injection of LPS.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " Therefore, DIM may exert its renoprotective actions by inhibiting NOX‑mediated oxidative stress and the apoptosis of renal tubular epithelial cells"

Taken altogether, Brassica rapa vegetable may be considered supplements for the prevention of kidney injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
