Hibiscus, the Natural Anti Bacterial Infection Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

A bacterial infection is an infected caused bacteria.

Infection can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, after receiving the messages from the central nervous system related to the danger of microbial infection, the immune macrophages in the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to the cover the wound and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of the infection to kill off pathogens which try to enter the body.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the acute phase of infection has also killed off or damage to the nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of scars.

In most cases in a healthy individual, depending on the size of the wound, the immune system can easily eradicate all foreign invaders and the wound is recovered within days and weeks.

Symptoms of the acute infection include gastrointestinal discomforts, such as congestion vomiting or nausea, and diarrhea, short term joint or muscle pain, fever, headache, skin rash and cough, Some patients with acute infection also experience symptoms of swollen lymph nodes, an indication of the body is fighting infection.

The most common types of bacterial infections are bacterial meningitis, otitis media, pneumonia, and tuberculosis.

Roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) is a species of Hibiscus probably native to West Africa used in traditional Chinese medicine to resolve phlegm and food stagnation and regulate the Liver to aid digestion, promote weight loss, reduce cholesterol, improve circulation, lower blood pressure.

With an aim to find natural food for the treatment of infectious diseases,, researchers compared the effects of rude, phenolic-rich extracts (CPREs) isolated from different sources, such as Hibiscus sabdariffa (H. sabdariffa, Roselle), Brassica oleracea var. capitata f. Rubra (B. oleracea, red cabbage) and Beta vulgaris (B. Vulgaris).

According to the tested differentiation, the administration of CPREs showed potential antibacterial and antifungal activities.

According to chemical analysis, total anthocyanins content (TAC), total phenolic content (TPC) and total flavonoid content (TFC) and other compounds found in all three CPREs demonstrated strong antimicrobial effects against pathogenic bacteria and fungi.

Hibiscus sabdariffa CPRE (HCPRE) at a dose of 50 μg/mL exhibited signs of asymmetric, wrinkled exterior surfaces, cell deformations and loss of cell shapes against Staphylococcus aureus DSM 1104 and Klebsiella pneumonia ATCC 43816.

The injection of CPRE also led to cell clumping, malformations, blisters, cell depressions, and diminished cell numbers.

In other words, CPRE induced the death of bacterial cells and loss of cell contents.

Taken altogether, Hibiscus sabdariffa may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of infectious diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brassica Oleracea Vegetables and Juices Inhibits the Onset of Breast Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

The prevalence of breast cancer has been acknowledged in the scientific community worldwide. Breast cancer widespread in women in Southeast Asian as a result of over 2 decades of economic prosperity caused by an unhealthy diet is a major concern.

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

Breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by the women themselves.

Breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

According to statistics, the risk of getting invasive breast cancer during the lifetime of a woman is 1/8.

People who inherited the genetic preposition of BRCA1 and 2 are associated with over 60% of the risk of breast cancer.

However, an unhealthy diet and lifestyle are some of the preventable risk factors that form a major cause of breast cancer onset.

In postmenopause, weight control is the major factor throughout life that appears to prevent breast cancer after menopause.

Daily physical activity and reduced intake of alcohol throughout life are associated with reduced risk of developing pre- and postmenopausal breast cancer, however, smoking during adolescence or early adulthood increases later risk of breast cancer.

Interestingly, in the depth discussion of the diet pattern in the risk of breast cancer, researchers do not find the direct link to breast cancer risk.

These results suggested by actively following a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise, the risk of breast cancer can be decreased substantially.

Kale is a species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to coastal southern and western Europe. The veggie leave is highly nutritious cultivated as foods in most part of Europe.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of cancers, researchers examined the antiproliferative activity of juice obtained from leaves of several varieties of Brassica oleracea on both estrogen receptor (ER)-positive (ER+; MCF-7 and BT474) and ER-negative (ER-; MDA-MB-231 and BT20) human breast cancer cell lines.

At low concentrations to final concentration 5-15 mL/L,
* All cauliflower varieties tested suppressed cell proliferation in a dose-dependent manner.

* Although no evidence of apoptosis was found, cancer cell growth inhibition was accompanied by significant cell death at the higher juice concentrations.

* All juices showed a preference in the inhibition of breast cancer cells compared with other mammalian cell lines, such as ECV304, VERO, Hep2, 3T3, and MCF-10A.

In the cell levels, all juices exerted the inhibition of proliferation associated with significantly reduced CDK6 expression and an increased level of p27 involved cell division and cell cycle arrest, respectively, in ER+ cells but not in ER- cells.

Based on the results, researchers said, "the edible part of Brassica oleracea contains substances that can markedly inhibit the growth of both ER+ and ER- human breast cancer cells, although through different mechanisms".

Taken altogether, kale, a member of cruciferous vegetables may be considered a functional food for the treatment of breast cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Not Cooked Potato but French Fried that Elevates the Risk of Obesity and Type 2 diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic diseases are medical conditions that last more than 3 months depending on the type of diseases.

In other words, chronic diseases generally cannot be prevented or cured by medication, nor do they just disappear.

According to the statistics, chronic diseases affect millions of people worldwide, leading to the death of 35 million people in 2005, including many young people and those in middle age.

The most common types of chronic diseases in the Western world are cardiovascular diseases and diabetes.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose due to either cell in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Some researchers also suggested that people with certain medical conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome. and high blood pressure is more prone to the onset of the disease.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

Obesity is a medical condition caused by excess body fat accumulated to some extent that impacts personal health. The hallmark of obesity is attenuated metabolism and structural cell changes in the obese fat observed by reducing metabolic activity.

Potato is a genus Solanum, belongs to the family Solanaceae. The veggie is a good source of protein and according to the statistic, the annual diet of an average global citizen is about 33 kg (72.6 Lbs) of potato. It now is growing worldwide in a suitable climate for commercial profits and health benefits, thus its consumption is extremely variable and rapidly changing.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers evaluated the relation between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, and CVD in apparently healthy adults.

According to the search of the databases of MEDLINE, Embase, the Web of Science, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials involved in the intervention and prospective observational studies that identified a total of 13 studies, including 5 studies that were related to obesity, 7 studies that were related to T2D, and one study that was related to CVD,
* The association between potatoes (not including french fries) and adiposity was neutral in 2 studies and was positive in 2 studies.

* For T2D, 2 studies showed a positive association, whereas 5 studies showed no or a negative association with intake of potatoes and T2D.

* For CVD, no association was observed.

Most importantly, French fries were positively associated with T2D and obesity in all studies.

Collectively, researchers said, "The identified studies do not provide convincing evidence to suggest an association between intake of potatoes and risks of obesity, T2D, or CVD"

And, "French fries may be associated with increased risks of obesity and T2D".

Lycopene Protects the Blood Vessels Against Vascular Complications in Type 2 Diabetics

By Kyle J. Norton

Vascular tissues are tissues with a lot of blood vessels, formed part of the circulatory system that carries blood to nourish the body tissues and organs including veins, arteries, and capillaries in the human body.

Vascular diseases are a group of diseases associated with an abnormal condition of the blood vessels (arteries and veins). In other words, vascular diseases are diseases that affect your circulatory system, such as peripheral artery disease.

Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

Most cases of diabetes are either caused by cells in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The vascular complications of diabetes can be either microvascular that induce
* Diabetic retinopathy, is a diabetic complication caused by damage to the blood vessels of the retina.

* Diabetic nephropathy is the diabetic complication that damages the kidneys.

* Diabetic neuropathy is the diabetic complication that damages nerves in the legs and feet.

Macrovascular diseases that include
* Diabetic coronary artery disease is is the most common type of heart disease associated with the hardening and narrowing arteries that supply blood to the heart muscle.

* Diabetic peripheral disease is a type of heart disease caused by narrowed arteries that reduce blood flow to your limbs.

* Diabetic cerebral vascular disease is a condition that affects the blood vessels of the brain and cerebral circulation.

Most cases of diabetes are the results of longer-term hyperglycemia caused by an unhealthy healthy lifestyle such as uncontrolled diet and physical inactivity. Failure to maintain the right blood glucose over time not only induces vascular complications but also exacerbates the risk of mortality.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diabetes complications, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on vascular complications associated with endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs).

Based on the number and the function of EPCs related to the advanced glycation end products (AGEs) generated in DM patients, researchers found that
* Lycopene injection exerted its natural antioxidant activity that protects EPCs under the microenvironment of AGEs from damage.

* At the concentration of 10μg/mL, Lyc improves cell proliferation and has low cytotoxicity in the presence of AGEs.

* Lycopene also protects the vascular cells against the S phase of the cell cycle arrest, apoptosis rate by decreasing autophagic reaction between ROS and mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) in the promotion of EPC survival associated with the activation of autophagy inhibitors,
3-Methyladenine (3-MA).

The results strongly suggested that Lyc promotes EPCs survival and protect EPCs from apoptosis and oxidative autophagy induced by AGEs against the vascular complications in diabetes subjects.

Dr. Zeng YC, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "This study provides new insights into Lyc protective mechanism of AGEs-induced oxidative autophagy in EPCs from DM patients and offers a new therapy for DM vascular complications".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention of vascular complications in type 2 diabetics, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lycopene Inhibited the Parameters Associated with Onset of Liver Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays an essential role that filters the blood from the digestive system but also produces bile to build strong cell membranes, produce vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Furthermore, the liver also aids digestive function to absorb nutrients from food intake, and protect the body against free radicals in the body through its antioxidant capacity.

Liver cancer is chronic a condition characterized by out of controlled growth of hepatocellular cells in the liver due to DNA alternation.

Since the organ is a soft tissue with less nerve, most liver cancer patients are diagnosed in the later stage of cancer.

Liver cancer remains the fifth most common malignancy in men and the eighth in women worldwide. According to the statistic, in the US, approximately, 42,030 new cases of liver cancer will be diagnosed in 2019, including 29,480 in men and 12,550 in women.

Sadly, liver cancer also will cause the death of approximately 31,780 people, including 21,600 men and 10,180 women in 2019. Believe it or not, liver cancer death rates have increased by over 2% per year since 2007

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a common form of primary liver cancer.

The grade of liver cancer is depending on the tendency of spreading. Low-grade cancers usually grow more slowly and are less likely to spread while high-grade cancers indicate otherwise.

Out of many risks associated with the onset of liver cancer, some researchers that long-term excessive alcohol drinking may be the culprit which causes the rise of liver cancer in the US.

Linda Carroll wrote on the NBC news." Severe alcohol-related liver disease is on the rise, a new study suggests. Experts say the increase may be due to heavy binge drinking, especially in young adults.

And, "...while there has been little change in the rate of people developing alcoholic fatty liver disease, there appears to be an increase in those who are at greater risk of cirrhosis, liver cancer, and death, according to the study published in JAMA"

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of liver cancer, researchers examined the effects of lycopene extracted from tomatoes (LycT) on N-Nitrosodiethylamine (NDEA)-induced hepatocarcinogenesis.

In a study of female BALB/c mice randomly divided into four groups, the Control, NDEA (200 mg NDEA/kg b.w. given i.p.), LycT (5 mg/kg b.w. given orally on alternate days) and LycT + NDEA group, researchers found that
* Lycopene treament inhibited the uncontrolled proliferation in the liver of NDEA associated with the high expression of cell-proliferation (P ≤ 0.001) in NDEA mice observed by the increased expression of genes (PCNA, Cyclin D1, and p21) associated with tumorigenesis compared to control.

* Furthermore, elevated expression of parameters associated with cancer expression in NDEA mice were also inhibited by the injection of lycopene extract compared to control.

* The aforementioned parameters correlated to the alterations in hepatic ultrastructure in the NDEA group were also inhibited by the lycopene extract.

* Moreover, according to the hepatic electron micrographs, LycT + NDEA group showed also increased macrophages, apoptotic bodies and well-differentiated hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), compared to undifferentiated HCC observed in the NDEA treated group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study demonstrates that dietary supplementation with LycT has a multidimensional role in preventing HCC development".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention of liver cancer pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens), the Anti-Inflammatory Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is the natural response of the immune system macrophages, the first line of defense in stimulating the production of inflammatory cytokines to protect our body against the infection caused by foreign microorganisms during the acute phase of body damage and injury.

Truly, the main focus of inflammation is to repair damage and injury.

Most cases of infection associated with inflammation are stopped at the acute phase. The wound or injury is slowly recovered.

However, overexpression of inflammatory cytokines in most cases can cause improper healing with scar formation or the death of nearby cells.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Diseases associated with low-grade inflammation include diabetes and cardiovascular.

Conventionally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common medical drugs such as aspirin. ibuprofen in reducing inflammation associated with pain-relieving.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, scientists investigated the prepared an extract of Euphrasia officinalis, a traditional folk medicine, to synthesize gold nanoparticles (EO-AuNPs) anti-inflammatory effects on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages.

Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys conditions, etc.

According to tested analysis, the successful synthesis of AuNPs by E. officinalis showed significant anti-inflammatory activities detected by a model of LPS-induced upregulation of inflammatory mediators and cytokines.

More precisely, AuNPs by E. officinalis inhibited the levels of nitric oxide (NO), nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), IL-1β, and IL-6 in RAW 264.7 cells.

Furthermore, EO-AuNPs exhibited little cytotoxicity in RAW 264.7 cells at 100 µg/mL concentration after 24 hours.

Pretreatment with EO-AuNPs also significantly reduced the phosphorylation and degradation of inhibitor kappa B-alpha and inhibited the nuclear translocation of NF-κB p65 involved the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Additionally, EO-AuNPs suppressed LPS-stimulated inflammation by blocking the activation of JAK/STAT pathway associated with cytokines and growth factors.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "The synthesized EO-AuNPs showed anti-inflammatory activity in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 cells, suggesting they may be potential candidates for treating inflammatory-mediated diseases".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Cleaver(Galium aparine), inhibits the Melanoma Cell Metastasis in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Skin melanoma is a skin cancer characterized by the alternation of the pigment-containing cells known as melanocytes. However, in rare cases, melanoma can also occur in the mouth, intestines, or eye.

Most cases of melanoma start in melanocytes on skin before spreading to the nearby tissue. In the advanced stage, the cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the originated site to infect other tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis, through the circulation of blood and fluids.

The most common sites of melanoma metastasis are the lung and breast.

The most common symptoms are visible by examing the change of skin, including the sores that can not heal itself, redness or swelling, persistent itching, tenderness and pain and particular, change of skin color and bleeding off of a mole compared to the normal moles.

The 4 most common types of skin melanoma include
* Superficial spreading melanoma, the type of cancer has a tendency to spread grow outward and spread across the surface of the skin, accounted for 70% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Nodular melanoma normally grows down into the skin and has a tendency to spread more quickly than other types of melanoma skin cancer.

* Lentigo malignant melanoma, most common in the older population, making up approximately 15% of all melanoma skin cancer.

* Acral lentiginous melanoma, most common in people with darker skin. Cancer first moves outward before spreading deeper into the skin.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 96,480 new melanomas will be diagnosed (about 57,220 in men and 39,260 in women) in the US. The condition also causes the death of 4,740 men and 2,490 women.

Believe it or not. most cases of melanoma are found in older adults. The average age diagnosed with melanoma is 63.

Cleaver is a herbaceous annual plant, genus Galium, belonging to the family Rubiaceae, native to North America and Eurasia. The herb has been used over thousands of years in herbal and traditional medicine as mild diuretic and blood and lymphatic cleanser and to treat psoriasis, skin conditions, glands, tonsillitis, bladder infections, prevent small kidney stone, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers investigated the Gallic acid (GA) found in herbal Cleaver in the inhibition of the growth of human cancer cells in vitro and in vivo.

GA decreases the expression of MMPs MMPs mRNA levels in A375.S2 human melanoma cells in stimulating the cancer cell metastasis.

Furthermore, GA processed antimetastatic potential by decreasing the invasiveness of cancer cells.

Moreover, this action of GA was involved in the Ras, p-ERK signaling pathways with function to communicate a signal from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell to induce the inhibition of MMP-2 associated with cancer spreading in A375.S2 human melanoma cells.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " These data, therefore, provide evidence for the role of GA as a potential cancer chemotherapeutic agent, which can markedly inhibit the invasive capacity of melanoma cells".
 o
Taken altogether, Comfrey may be considered a remedy to inhibit cancer call spreading, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
