Lycopene Protects the Bone Density Against Osteoporosis (Osteoblastogenesis)

By Kyle J. Norton

Osteoblastogenesis are many factors associated with bone remodeling. In other words, osteoblastogenesis promotes an anabolic state (6 anabolic ingredients) of bone metabolism that protects the bone density against the bone reabsorption.

Osteoporosis is a chronic condition characterized by the thinning of bone and bone tissues due to the loss of bone density over time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

Patients with osteoporosis may experience symptoms of lower back pain, as a result of the fractured or collapsed vertebra, loss of height over time, a stooped posture, easy bone fracture, neck pain, and psychological symptoms of depression.

In women, osteoporosis may also induce psychosomatic, gastrointestinal and swelling and vasomotor symptoms, especially depressive symptom.

Most common complications of untreated osteoporosis are
* Bone fracture
Bone fracture is one of the most serious complications of osteoporosis, due to loss of bone mineral density. Even minimum mechanical stress can easily head for fracture.

* Chronic pain
Chronic pain is often induced poor quality of life in patients with osteoporosis, affecting daily living and functional status, in some cases, causing mental health, such as anxiety and depression to certain patients.

* Bone Deformity
Deformity, dysmorphism, or dysmorphic feature is a major abnormality in the shape..

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to find a potential phytochemical to protect the bone mineral density, researchers examined the bone metabolism of lycopene.

According to the tested differentiation
* Lycopene after the ingestion of lycopene-containing products such as tomato inhibited the bone oxidative-stress by enhancing the production of osteoblasts associated with the improvement of bone health

In other words, lycopene protected the bone density by inhibiting the bone reabsorption and increasing forming of new bone cells.

* Lycopene not only did not affect cell density/survival; but also protected the bone by decreasing the calcium-phosphate resorption.

* Lycopene also acted as NF-kB signaling inhibitors to inhibit osteoclast formation and bone resorptive activity against the bone formation.

Based on the findings, lycopene protects bone mineral density by stimulating osteoblastogenesis.

Researchers after taking into account of co and confounders said, "This information might be relevant for the prevention and delay in the progression of osteolytic bone conditions".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the promotion of osteoblastogenesis,  pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Pea, the Anti Allergic Asthma Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory disease is a class of medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues. The most common respiratory diseases are inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, and respiratory tract infections.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

The medical condition affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

Besides episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, patients with asthma also experience symptoms of reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma in some cases can interfere with daily activities and may lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Allergic asthma is the most common form of asthma, triggered by inhaling allergens such as dust mites, pet dander, pollen or mold.

The condition in most cases is involved in the overreaction of the immune system against the unharmful allergens, leading to tightening the muscle of the airway.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of asthma, researchers investigated the impact of amine oxidase green pea (GP) effects on allergic asthma shock.

According to the tested analysis, the plant amine oxidase (Cu-AO, histaminase, EC1.4.3.6) purified from pea seedling showed strong activity against the onset of allergic asthma by modulating IgE-mediated allergic reactions.

Where the IgE antibodies formed to an antigen (or allergen) are determined by many factors including genetic, flea, food, and environmental allergens.

In other words, plant amine oxidase purified from pea seeding mediates the hypersensitive response of immune functioning against allergic asthma shock.

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of allergic asthma,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Food Broccoli, the Potential Tumor Suppressor

By Kyle J. Norton

Tumor suppressor proteins are types of genetic materials that protect the body against cell proliferation by regulating the activity of a variety of cellular genes involved in growth and cell cycle progression.

In other words, tumor-suppressor genes encode proteins that slow or inhibit progression through a range of mechanisms to protect the cell integrity against mutation including inhibiting proliferation, programming cell death and involving cell cycle arrest.

Proteins found in the cells of organisms are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in maintaining the structure, function, and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs.

Proteins are made up of hundreds or thousands of smaller units called amino acids, attaching one to another in long chains.

The most common types of tumor-suppressor proteins are
* The retinoblastoma protein (Rb) is a tumor suppressor protein that has been found to induce dysfunction in several major cancers by preventing excessive cell growth and inhibiting cell cycle.

* p53 is also a tumor suppressor protein that plays a critical role in the regulation of cell division through its anti-proliferative activity.

In many cancer,  the loss or inactivation of the tumor suppressor genes has shown to contribute to the abnormal proliferation of tumor cells.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of Indole-3-Carbinol (I3C), a dietary compound found naturally in cruciferous vegetables, including broccoli and brussels sprouts on cell arrest of human reproductive cancer cells.

According to the I3C treatment on the tested cancer cell line, the bioactive compound increased both the transcripts and protein levels of the CDK2 inhibitor p21 associated with a tumor-suppressive gene linking to DNA damage cell cycle arrest through tumor protein p53, another tumor suppressor.

In other words, ablating p53 production prevented the I3C function to induce G1 arrest and p21 expression.

In cell division assays, the anti-proliferative activity of I3C was attributed to p53 protein stability and greater transactivation of p21 potential.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " I3C induced G1 arrest of human prostate cancer cells requires the induced production of the activated phosphorylated forms of p53, which stimulate transcription of the CDK2 inhibitor p21".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of Indole-3-Carbinol  may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of  I3C in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cabbage inhibits the Onset and Progression of Liver Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Furthermore, the liver produces bile that not only aids the digestive function in food absorption but also builds strong cell membranes, produces vitamin D and steroid hormone.
Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage no not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus. However, in North America, due to overexpression of overweight and obese of the population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

The highest mortality rates occurred observed in East Asian countries probably due to the high incidence of hepatitis virus.

The world standardized mortality rate for liver cancer is 9.5 per 100,000 people (14.3 in males and 5.1 in females).

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belong to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.
On finding a potential wholefood for the treatment of cancer, researchers compared the effect of isolated Sulforaphane (SFN) from red cabbage (Brassica oleraceae var rubra) and the antiproliferative activity of various fractions.

In the inhibitory assays, sulforaphane (SFN) showed significant activity to induce cancer cell apoptosis.

Std SFN and purified SFN concentration found to have closer IC50 which is equal to 58.96 microgram/ml (HEp-2 cells), 61.2 microgram/ml (Vero cells), compared to the extract of 113 microgram/ml (HEp-2 cells) and 125 microgram/ml (Vero cells), respectively.

More precisely, the application of SFN induced both cancer cell death by increasing the function of the expressions of the proteins (p53, caspase 3 and Bax) associated with pro-apoptosis and tumor suppression and inhibiting the expression of the anti-apoptotic protein (bcl-2),

Based on the results, Dr. Devi JR, the lead scientist said, "purified SFN possesses antiproliferative effects the same as Std SFN and its apoptotic mechanism in HEp-2 cells could be mediated through p53 induction, bax and bcl-2 signaling pathways".

Taken altogether, cabbage processed a high amount of SFN may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cruciferous Vegetables Inhibit the Expression of Oxidative Stress in Parkinson's disease (PD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules with a unique function in the inhibition of oxidation.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radical or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Overexpression of free radicals is known to cause damage in contributing to the etiology of many chronic health problems such as cardiovascular and inflammatory disease, cataracts, and cancer.

Long-term oxidative stress presented in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

More precisely, exogenous factors, such as cigarette smoke, and endogenous factors, such as the oxidative burst from activated macrophages are some of the factors involved in the risk of oxidative stress.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.
Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects movement caused by the gradual death of neurons that produce a chemical messenger in the brain called dopamine.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the antioxidant Dithiolethiones, a group of sulfur-containing heterocyclic compounds found in cruciferous vegetables protective effects against oxidative stress.

According to the tested analysis, in 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) Parkinson's disease (PD) model
* Before treatment of ACDT, cells treated by 6-OHDA showed to induce cell death, reduce the cell respiration, elevate the caspase associated with apoptosis, and increase of the levels of reactive oxygen species.

In other words, 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) reduces neuron integrity and promotes neuron apoptosis to induce PD neurodegenerative disease.

* Pretreatment of SH-SY5Y cells with dithiole-4-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (ACDT), a derivative of  Dithiolethiones induced the production of the levels of the antioxidant glutathione (GSH) in a time-concentration-dependent manner by inhibiting the GSH-synthesizing enzyme glutamate-cysteine ligase catalytic subunit (GCLC).

* Furthermore, the application of ACDT also promoted the expression of antioxidant through the activity of nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor (Nrf2), that protect the cells against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Collectively, the data demonstrated ACDT to be a promising new dithiolethione for the treatment of PD, with two modifiable functional groups offering additional avenues for enhanced pharmacological application",

Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables processed abundantly phytochemical dithiolethionede may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of PD, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Beta-Sitosterol Promotes the Smooth Muscle Functioning

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperproliferation is a progression of highly invasive tumors associated with an abnormally high rate of cancer cell division, leading to rapid overgrowth of the tumor.

Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) are muscle cells that line the insides of hollow organs such as arteries, lungs, bladder, the digestive system, and the reproductive system.

The proliferation of smooth muscle cells (SMCs) is important process in vascular lesion formation by remodeling the vessel wall in response to injury.

Hyperproliferation or excessive proliferation of vascular smooth muscle cells have been found to contribute to the etiology of some diseases, including atherosclerosis, restenosis, and pulmonary hypertension.

In contrast to excessive proliferation, hypo-proliferation is a process that lowers the rate of cancer cell division.

Dr. Sporn MB, the lead scientists, in the study of the proliferative diseases, wrote, "excessive proliferation of cells and turnover of cellular matrix contribute significantly to the pathogenesis of several diseases, including cancer, atherosclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis, idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, scleroderma and cirrhosis of the liver".

And, "As corollaries to this concept, the following topics are considered: (1) the role of polypeptide hormones and hormone-like mediators in the initiation, promotion and maintenance of proliferative responses; (2) alterations in collagen metabolism and collagenase activity; (3) the role of proteinases; (4) the potential use of inhibitors of proteinases for prevention of disease; and (5) the potential use of inhibitors of proliferative polypeptide hormones for prevention of disease".

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the effect of dietary PS on vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) growth and function.

The study included VSMC treated with 16 microM cholesterol, 25-hydroxycholesterol, campesterol, and beta-sitosterol (SIT) with ethanol as a vehicle.

According to the tested results,
* Cholesterol supplementation showed no effect on cell growth and proliferation and 25-Hydroxycholesterol decreased cell growth by 68% and DNA synthesis by 99% compared to SIT that inhibits VSMC growth more effectively than campesterol.

* SIT decreased cell growth by 30%, compared to only 16% of campesterol.

* Furthermore, SIT supplementation decreased DNA synthesis by 25%, compared to no effects of campesterol or cholesterol supplementation.

* SIT decreases the De novo cholesterol synthesis by 49% compared to was decreased 28% of campesterol, and 23% of cholesterol.

* Beta-sitosterol decreased VSMC cholesterol by 41% following supplementation and represented 49% of the total sterol amount.

Based on the results, researchers said, "dietary PS, especially SIT, may offer protection from the VSMC hyperproliferation found in atherosclerosis. Further in vivo research is needed to support these observations".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the protection of smooth muscle functioning, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Inhibits Liver fibrosis Caused by Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Hepatic fibrosis is a condition characterized by overly exuberant wound healing causing excessive connective tissue builds up in the liver. In other words, hepatic fibrosis is a portion of the liver which was affected by scars formation.

Since liver fibrosis is a very slowly progressive disease, people who carry the disease may not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage.

The exact causes of liver fibrosis are unknown. However, certain risk factors such as repeated liver injury caused by a virus infection, and a blockage in the bile ducts are found to elevate on the onset of liver fibrosis. However, not all people with the virus will develop liver fibrosis.

Long-term untreated liver fibrosis can lead to cirrhosis, a condition of the severe scarring of the liver and life-threatening liver disease.

The most common scale to grade the stage of liver fibrosis is the METAVIR scoring system. By examing the grade and stage of liver fibrosis of patients, their doctors can now determine the degree of severity to which patients' liver is affected.

According to a statistic from John Hopkins Medicine(2),
* Cirrhosis and other chronic liver diseases are common disease-related causes of death in the U.S. Approximately 31,000 people in the U.S. die each year from cirrhosis.

* Approximately 3.5 to 4.6 million people in the U.S. are chronically infected with the hepatitis C virus. About 2,000 people die of hepatitis C annually in the U.S.

And,

* Hepatitis B kills approximately 2,000 people in the U.S. annually, and 85,000 to 2.2 million people in the U.S. are infected with the virus.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the efficacy of combined administration of alpha-tocopherol (AT) and ascorbic acid (AA) in ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity.

Rats selected for the study were grouped into I-control rats, II-ethanol, III-alpha-tocopherol, IV-ethanol+alpha-tocopherol, V-AA, VI-ethanol+ascorbic acid, VII-alpha-tocopherol+ascorbic acid, VIII-ethanol+alpha-tocopherol+ascorbic acid for 90 days.

According to the tested analysis, all parameters associated with toxication which were elevated in the ethanol group were significantly reduced by the administered AT and AA in combination.

Furthermore, the levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the rats which were reduced by ethanol administration were enhanced on combined administration of AT and AA.

Hepatic fibrosis induced by the ethanol toxicity was over 20% lower in the AT and AA co-administered group compared with AT and AA alone treated groups.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Combined administration of fat-soluble AT and water-soluble AA was beneficial against ethanol-induced hepatotoxicity. This may be due to their different subcellular localizations".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver fibrosis caused by toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
