Lycopene Improves the Lung Function Against Allergic Airways Disease (AAD)

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs are a pair of organs located on either side of the chest (thorax) with a function to bring fresh oxygen into the body and remove the carbon dioxide and other waste gases from the body.

According to the statistics provided by the Lung Association over 3 million Canadians are affected by one of five serious respiratory diseases – asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), lung cancer, tuberculosis (TB), and cystic fibrosis.

In 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, represented 14% of all new cancer cases. Lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians in the same year.

The exact causes of lung disease are not identified. However, epidemiological studies suggested
being overweight, smoking, family history, smoking are some of the most prevalent factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Most common lung diseases in North America including asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), interstitial lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and cystic fibrosis.

Allergic airways disease (AAD) is an inflammatory disease associated with the immune response to the allergies.

In other words, allergic airway inflammation is an abnormal reaction of the immune system towards unharmfully common and environmental factors, such as pollen grains or dust mites.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system which protects our body against the stimuli of invasive pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a result of the immune white blood cell response to tissue damage or injury by stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines during the acute phase of infection.

Most common diseases associated with allergic airway inflammation are asthma and allergic rhinitis.
* Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing. The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.
*Allergic rhinitis, also known as hay fever, is a type of inflammation in the nose associated with the overreaction of the immune system against allergens in the air.

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of allergic asthma, researchers examined the effects of lycopene, on allergic inflammation in a mouse model of AAD.

The study included BALB/c mice received lycopene supplement or control induced AAD. by ovalbumin (OVA).

Based on the tested differentiation, lycopene supplementation reduced eosinophilic infiltrates associated with an inflammatory response in the bronchoalveolar lavage fluid, lung tissue, and blood, and mucus-secreting cell numbers in the airways.

The T helper cells (Th2) associated with the immune response in the production of pro0inflamamtory cytokines such as cytokines IL-4 and IL-5 were also significantly reduced by the administration of lycopene.

In other words, lycopene protects the airway cell integrity against the onset of allergic airway inflammation, particularly in allergic airways disease (AAD).

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Supplementation with lycopene reduces allergic inflammation both in the lungs and systemically, by decreasing Th2 cytokine responses. T" and " lycopene supplementation may have a protective effect against asthma".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato  may be considered a remedy for the prevention of allergic airways disease (AAD), pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Processes Anti-diabetes and Immunomodulatory Activities

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

The most common symptoms of diabetes are excessive thirst and hunger, frequent urination, unintended weight loss or gain, frequent fatigue, irritability and gastrointestinal symptoms such as nausea.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of blurred vision and slow wound healing or ulcer.

Prediabetes is caused by unhealthy diets with high saturated fat, smoking, and excessive alcohol drinking. Therefore, understanding prediabetes is a very important issue for prediabetics, because with proper diets, quit smoking, controlled alcohol intake and exercises, prediabetes can be reversed or delayed.

People with the glucose level between 111mg/dl-125 mg/dl are considered  pre-diabetics

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes has been found to induce diabetics complications, including neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy).

According to statistics, diabetes is one of the most common diseases in the US. Approximately 10% or 29.1 million people in the United States have diabetes, accompanied by 8.1 million that are undiagnosed and unaware of their condition.

About 1.4 million new cases of diabetes are diagnosed in the United States every year. More than one in every 10 adults who are 20 years or older has diabetes.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprise the body's defense system against diseases.

Immunomodulatory activity is an action that improves the underactive immune function that is susceptible to the invasion of the foreign microorganism and inhibits the overactive immune system that causes autoimmune diseases.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

On finding a herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of diabetes, researchers investigated the effects of the decoction HemoHIM  on hyperglycemia and the immune response in diabetic mice.

Mice selected to the study were divided into nondiabetic and diabetic mice induced by a single injection of streptozotocin (STZ, 200 mg/kg, i.p.) orally administered HemoHIM (100 mg/kg) once a day for 4 weeks.

Diabetic mice with HemoHIM showed improved hyperglycemia and glucose tolerance as well as elevated plasma insulin levels with the preservation of insulin staining in pancreatic β-cells, compared to the diabetic control group.

Furthermore, HemoHIM treatment restored parameters associated with the onset of diabetes including thymus weight, white blood cells, lymphocyte numbers, and splenic lymphocyte populations (CD4(+) T and CD8(+) T), which were reduced in diabetic mice.

Moreover, HemoHIM also animalized the IFN-γ production associated with innate and adaptive immunity in response to Con A stimulation in facilitating mediated T cell proliferation.

Based on the results, researchers said, "HemoHIM may have potential as a glucose-lowering and immunomodulatory agent by enhancing the immune function of pancreatic β-cells in STZ-induced diabetic mice".

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica used in the combination with other herbal medicines for the treatment of diabetes, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry, a Natural Antioxidant Whole Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibited free radicals that cause oxidative stress if overexpressed.

Oxidative stress-related conditions are the class of diseases associated with cellular damage, including the alternation of cell DNA, and damage of lipid and protein.

Oxidative stress can be acute or chronic. Acute oxidative stress caused by suddenly burst of free radical due to stress or external sources, in most cases can be inhibited by increasing antioxidant enzymes by the lung.

Chronic oxidative stress is caused by the unbalanced ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by our body. The condition is either caused by oner expression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidants enzymes or both.

There are many risk factors that cause oxidative stress. However, in the concerns of the prevalence of chronic diseases associated with the Western diet, some researchers suggested that the link of the oxidative diseases in the Western world may be resulted by the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades.

The list of chronic diseases caused by cell oxidation is very long, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial infarction, cardiovascular diseases, chronic inflammation, stroke.

Most common causes of oxidative stress are overexpression of free radicals in the induction of a chain reaction.

Due to the unstable nature of free radicals with unpaired electrons in the outer ring, free radicals are ready to donate or intercept the electrons from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction which can not be stopped until the outring electron are either paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Contrast to the general belief, the damage caused by free radicals are overly exaggerated, under normal condition, free radicals produced by the internal or external source are needed by our body on cellular responses and immune function.

However, overexpression of free radicals also known as oxidative stress can be a danger to our health.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the effect of cranberry juice (CJ) antioxidant activity.

According to the tested analysis on the consumption of high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and ascorbate with CJ antioxidants or without CJ (control) given to 10 normal individuals after an overnight fast that was measured 6 times over 7 h after the consumption of a single 240 mL.
* People who consumed HFCS and ascorbate showed a slight decrease in plasma antioxidant capacity at all time points and increase of oxidative stress.

* Compared to high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and ascorbate, CJ increased the plasma antioxidant capacity significantly at all time points.

* Most importantly, levels of postprandial triglycerides associated with oxidative stress and antioxidant activity was significantly lower in the CJ group compared to.the high fructose corn syrup (HFCS) and ascorbate group.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Cranberries are an excellent source of high-quality antioxidants and should be examined in human supplementation studies".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the enhancement of the antioxidant activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects in Post-Ischemic Reperfusion Injury in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Acute brain infarction is the medical condition characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local death of the brain tissue.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are asscoaited with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

Myocardial infarction (MI), or heart attack is a condition caused by the decrease or blockage of blood flow to a part of the heart that damage the heart muscle.

Reperfusion injury or ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) or reoxygenation injury, when blood supply returns to damaged tissues after a period of ischemia or lack of oxygen (anoxia or hypoxia). caused by the decrease or blockage of blood flow to a part of the heart.

Atherosclerosis, one of the major cause of the cardiovascular disease is a medical condition caused by the accumulation of plaque on the arterial wall. Over time, the condition can lead to narrowing the arteries or blocked arteries, leading to reduce oxygenated blood flow to the heart and other parts of the body.

Arteries are blood vessels carried the oxygen-rich blood to the heart before passing them to the tissues and organs.

Plague is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood. In other words, cholesterol that cannot be returned to the liver for reuse may have a strong impact to induce plaque accumulation.

There are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. However, aging may have a strong and negative implication on acute infarction.

Dr. Mehta RH, the lead scientist wrote, "Older age was associated with a greater proportion of patients with functional limitations, heart failure, prior coronary disease, and renal insufficiency and a lower proportion of male and diabetic patients".

And, "...age-associated differences in clinical characteristics in elderly patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), which account for some of the age-associated differences in mortality".

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the promotion of heart health, researchers evaluated the cardioprotective mechanisms of Withania somnifera (Ws), in the setting of ischemia and reperfusion (IR) injury.

In vivo, selected Wistar rats were divided into three groups received orally saline (sham, control IR) and Ws-50 mg/kg (Ws-IR), respectively, for 1 month. Then, at the day 31, rats of control IR and Ws-IR group, LAD coronary artery occlusion was undertaken for 45 min followed by 1 h reperfusion.

Based on the tested analysis, post-ischemic reperfusion injury was found to induce significant cardiac necrosis, apoptosis, and decline in antioxidant status.

Furthermore, elevation in lipid peroxidation was also found in the IR control group, compared to the sham group.

Ws treatment group not only restored the myocardial oxidant-antioxidant balance but also inhibited the makers of apoptotic effects induced by ischemia-reperfusion injury.

Moreover, Ws protects additional post-ischemic reperfusion injury-induced further myocardial damage in the tested rats by increasing the levels of proteins associated with anti-apoptotic activity and decreasing the protein involved in pro-apoptotic activity, evidenced by histopathologic evaluation.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The antioxidant and anti-apoptotic properties of Ws may contribute to the cardioprotective effects.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the prevention and treatment of myocardial damage in post-ischemic reperfusion injury, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Phytochemical Betaxanthins the Potential Scavenger of Reactive Oxygen Species

By Kyle J. Norton

Free radical scavengers are antioxidants that gobble up free radical before they can cause a chain of reaction.

Most common types of free radical scavengers are catalase, glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), vitamin A, C, D, and E.

Free radicals are highly unstable molecules. Internally, free radicals are produced in our body during the process of cell metabolism. Externally, free radicals can enter our body from the environment sources, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.

In other words, any chemical compounds or molecules which process oxygen atom can be free radical after chemical interaction.

Lipid peroxyl radicals are free radical generated from the peroxidation of polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Lipoperoxyl radical scavengers are antioxidants that slow or inhibit the chain reaction of the lipoperoxyl free radicals before they can cause oxidative stress

Oxidative stress is a result of overexpression of free radical-induced by a chain reaction that can not be stopped due to reduced levels of antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

Overexpression of free radicals causes lipid peroxidation by oxidizing the polyunsaturated fatty acids and cholesterol through three distinct mechanisms, including free radical-mediated chain reaction, enzyme-mediated oxidation, and nonradical, non-enzymatic oxidation.

Over time, oxidative stress can damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA.

Antioxidants, the stable molecules have been found to protect polyunsaturated fatty acids against peroxidation by scavenging peroxyl radicals.

Dr. Authors: Maria A., the lead author wrote, "Aerobic life is characterized by a steady formation of reactive oxygen species and free radicals, which is almost entirely counteracted by endogenous primary and secondary antioxidant systems".

And, "Maintenance of these systems is then imperative to ensure a continuous defense to cells and to avoid conditions known as oxidative stress. Apart from antioxidant vitamins, many compounds from the plant kingdom are now considered very helpful to maintain a proper cell redox balance".
In other words, antioxidants with free radical scavenging activity may protect the body against the damage of various cellular components.

Betaxanthins are Phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, Sicilian prickly pear, etc.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of disease associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the antioxidant effects of red-violet betacyanins and yellow-orange betaxanthins.

According to the tested analysis,. betanin showed a scavenger of reactive oxygen species in the induction of free radical chain reaction in the promotion of oxidative stress.

Furthermore, betanin (betacyanins and betaxanthins) also exhibited gene-regulatory activity partly via nuclear factor (erythroid-derived 2)-like 2-(Nrf2) dependent signaling pathways associated with the expression of antioxidant defense.

Moreover, betanin also prevents LDL oxidation and DNA damage included by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes.

However, blood pressure lowering effects of red beet was not associated with the presence of betanin but dietary nitrate found in the beetroot.

Taken altogether, betaxanthins found in betanin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric, a Potentially Natural Prevention and Treatment of Esophageal Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The esophagus is the tube that leads foods from the pharynx to the stomach.

Esophageal cancer is not very uncommon caused by abnormal cell growth as a result of the DNA alteration of the cells.

Most cases of esophageal cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the tissue that lines the upper part of the esophagus or the lower part of the esophagus that connected with the stomach, before penetrating in the wall of the esophagus and spreading to the lymph node around the bottom of the esophagus, stomach and the chest, then to the distant parts of the body.

In the US, esophageal cancer accounts for only 1% of all cancers diagnosed every year.
I 2019, approximately the disease will cause the death of 16,080 Americans, including 13,020 men and 3,060 women,

Believe it or not, esophageal cancer is the seventh most common cancer cause of death among men.

The exact causes of esophageal cancer are unknown. Epidemiologically. most common risk factors associated with the onset of esophageal cancer include
* Age
Esophageal cancer is an aging disease, most patients are over 60.

* Sex
It is more common in men compared to women.

* Genetic passing through
The risk of esophageal cancer increased if a direct family was diagnosed with the disease.

* Smoking and heavy alcohol drinking
Heavy alcohol drinking and smoking that account for over 90% of all squamous cancer increase the risk and together appear to increase the risk more than either individually.

*  Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
A chronic or prolonged period of reflux, leading to the changing of the lining of the esophagus.

* Diet
In some parts of the world included certain substance such as nitrosamines, nitrite, and dietary deficiency may also increase the risk of esophageal cancer.

* Previous head and neck injured
Previous head and neck cancers increase the risk of the same and esophageal cancer.

* Obesity
Obesity increases the risk of reflux.

* Thermal injury
Prolonged thermal injury to the esophagus due to the love of hot fluids or soups causes damage to the esophagus
and
* Achalasia
A health condition of esophageal motility disorder caused by uncoordinated or weaken muscular contractions interferes with swallowing of food down to the esophagus.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of esophageal cancer, researchers examined the anti-cancer effect of Theracurmin® (THC) which is highly bioavailable curcumin dispersed with colloidal submicron particles.

According to the tested analysis,
* THC showed strong cytotoxicity in ESCC cells and suppressed the growth of xenografted tumors compared to those of curcumin.

* Furthermore, THC increased ROS levels and activated the NRF2-NMRAL2P-NQO1 expressions associated with oxidative stress.

* Moreover, THC also Inhibited of NQO1 in ESCC cells.

Where increased levels of NQO1 has been found in patients with breast cancer.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These findings suggest the potential usefulness of THC and its combination with NQO1 inhibitor as a therapeutic option for ESCC".

Additionally, in the analysis of the natural polyphenol curcumin effects on esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), researchers found that polyphenols curcumin inhibited the gene expression associated with tumor growth or proliferation on such as STAT3 through growth arrest and apoptosis in culture.

More precisely, curcumin preferentially blocked the growth of primary ESCC-derived xenografts that activated the expression of STAT3.

Dr. Liu Y, after taking other factors into account wrote, "Curcumin is able to exert anti-tumor action through inhibiting the STAT3 signaling pathway. Giving its wide use in traditional medicines with low toxicity and few adverse reactions".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of esophageal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Reduces the Risk of Gingivitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Oral health is a process or activity that protects the oral cavity against diseases associated with regular brushing of the teeth and cleaning between the teeth.

Gingivitis or gingival inflammation is one of the most common conditions of oral inflammation of the gum caused by overexpression of plaques accumulated on your teeth that irritate the gingiva. Over time, the gum of an infected person has become swollen and bleed easily.

In severe cases, the condition can lead to periodontal disease, inducing tooth decay or loss of the tooth.

Most of the cases of gingivitis are associated with poor hygiene, particularly in people who smoke.
Gingivitis can be reversed by following a good oral health habit, including brushing at least twice a day, flossing daily and getting regular dental checkups.

Other causes of the oral problem are poor diet and hygiene, trauma, stress, alcohol use, and use of illegal substances.

However, chronic diseases also are found to induce poor oral health, including diabetes.

Most common symptoms of gingivitis including swollen gums with dusky red or dark red color and bleeding easily when brush or floss, particularly breath-breath.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, smoking is an important cause of severe gum disease in the US.

Some researchers suggested that long-term oral infection can place the patients at risk of certain chronic diseases.

Dr. Xiaojing Li, and colleagues wrote, "Recently, it has been recognized that oral infection, especially periodontitis, may affect the course and pathogenesis of a number of systemic diseases, such as cardiovascular disease, bacterial pneumonia, diabetes mellitus, and low birth weight".

And, "Periodontitis as a major oral infection may affect the host's susceptibility to systemic disease in three ways: by shared risk factors; subgingival biofilms acting as reservoirs of gram-negative bacteria; and the periodontium acting as a reservoir of inflammatory mediators".

On finding a potential compound for the improvement of oral health, researchers examined the effect of cranberry functional beverage (CFB) on gingival inflammation indices for eight weeks.

The two-arm randomized controlled study included 50 participants divided into an experimental group (CFB), administered daily with 750 ml CFB, or a control group administered the same amount of water.

During the experiment, researchers found that
* CFB shows a significant change in gingival (GI) and plaque (PI) but has no effects on not bleeding on probing (BoP) and approximal plaque (API) indices compared to the control group.

* Futhermore, Streptococcus mutans (SM) associated with oral infection was lower in the CFB group compared to control.

* However, there is no difference in serum or saliva antioxidant status (TAS), IL-1beta associated with inflammatory status, and serum malondialdehyde level (MDA), between groups.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " the consumption of CFB improves gingival and plaque indices without posing a risk of caries development. Thus CFB can be recommended as a safe adjunct for nonsurgical PT in patients with gingivitis".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gingivitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
