Green Beans,Reduce the Risk of Cardiovascular Diseases (CVD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of diseases associated with blood vessels and heart muscle.

Depending on the types of blood vessel damage or blocked, and heart muscle damage, CVD can be a coronary artery disease caused by the hardening of the arteries that interfere with the blood flow to the heart or stroke caused by reducing oxygen supply to the brain cells.

Heart disease is a class of conditions associated with blood vessels and heart muscle that affect the heart functioning, including coronary artery disease; heart rhythm problems (arrhythmias); and heart defects.

Coronary artery disease is a condition in most cases associated with an inflammatory cholesterol-containing plaque in the arteries.

Stroke can be caused by reduced blood flow or small blood vessel bleeding, leading to the death of neurons that affect parts of the brain functioning.

Heart failure, a major health problem associated with the reduced function of the heart affects more than 6.5 million Americans, a leading cause of hospitalization in people older than age 65.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, every year, heart disease causes the death of 610,000 people in the United States. In other words, every year, 1 in every 4 deaths in the US are caused by heart disease.

Believe it or not, every year about 735,000 Americans have a heart attack including the first attack of 525,000 patients.

There are many prevalent factors associated with cardiovascular disease including family history, age ethnicity, gender, medical conditions such as cholesterol high blood pressure and diabetes.

Some researchers suggested overconsumption of carbohydrate over the long-term may be one major condition that causes the onset of CVD.

Dr. Norman J. Temple in the examination of the effect of fat, sugar, whole grains in the risk of heart disease wrote, " The evidence linking carbohydrate-rich foods with CHD has been steadily strengthening. Refined carbohydrates, especially sugar-sweetened beverages, increase the risk of CHD. Conversely, whole grains and cereal fiber are protective. An extra one or 2 servings per day of these foods increases or decreases risk by approximately 10% to 20%.".

In other words, the intake of the high amount of carbohydrate is associated with the increased risk of CVD.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a portent compound or the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers compared
the antithrombotic activity in participants in central Chile.

The study included extracts samples of 19 fruits and 26 vegetables of the local diet.prepared from each sample included an aqueous (juice or pressed solubles) and/or methanol-soluble fraction.

According to the results of differentiation, green beans and tomatoes extracts inhibited the platelet aggregation induced by ADP and arachidonic acid, in a concentration-dependent manner.

However, green beans and tomatoes extracts showed a lesser effect comapred to the methanolic extracts of grapes on prolonged the prothrombin time (PT), diluted prothrombin time (dPT).

Moreover, extracts of raspberry are more effective in prolonged the activated partial thromboplastin time (APTT), and fibrinolytic activity comapred to the green beans extracts.

Taken altogether, green beans used combined with tomato may be considered a remedy for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Plus Cauliflower Protects the Skin Integrity Against the Onset of Acne

By Kyle J. Norton

Acne is a skin condition characterized by dirt in oily skin pores.

Believe it or not, acne can also be caused by the hormone testosterone. Other forms of acne can also be found in women's pregnancy or the menstrual cycle due to hormone change.

Holistically, acne is also induced by the system of toxins in the body, if the liver and kidney can not cleanse all toxins in the body, toxins will have to eliminate through the skin, leading to skin disease such as acne.

In general, acne is naturally preventable, some researchers suggested if you are following the below strategies
* Acne care treatment: cream and lotion
Be sure before applying skin cream or lotion in acne affected area, wash it with mild soap and tepid water because water too hot or too cold might cause the breaking of capillaries (small veins).

The best choice of acne cream and lotion is the one made by using ingredients of natural remedies that exist in the kitchen of your home for cost-effectiveness with little or no side effect.

Although there are plenty of acne creams and lotions in pharmacy drug stores, you might only choose those that do not contain chemicals that may cause side effects to your sensitive skin.

Asking the pharmacist in the drug store is the best approach. Please note that chemicals preserve the product might cause side effects to your sensitive skin.

*  Reducing intake of saturated fat
Saturated fat intake causes the build-up of cholesterol in capillaries, the small veins in your skin. Without giving enough oxygen to the skin cells, your skin becomes oily and easy to attract dirt, causing acne. To avoid this, you should substitute your red meat intake by 4- 8 servings every week with fish.

* Lower your body toxins
If the liver and kidney are not able to get rid of toxins completely, the skin becomes an extra burden to remove them, causing acne. To avoid this, adding some delicious antioxidants super-foods in your diet will help to solve this problem quickly such as garlic, ginger, etc.

4. Eat foods that purify your blood
Foods that purify your bloodstream will increase the circulation of blood to the skin, leading to more healthy skin that is immune from any skin problems.

Cauliflower and broccoli are members of  the species Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae, native to Italy.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of Acne vulgaris, researchers examined the efficacy of two different plant extracts against in HaCaT cells, AE1-2.

Where AE1 consisted of Juglans regia (walnut husk), Myrtus communis (myrtle leaves), Matricaria chamomilla (chamomilla flowers), Urtica dioica (stinging nettle leaves), and Rosa damascena (rose flowers) and  AE2 contained Brassica oleracea var. botrytis (broccoli) and B. oleracea var. Italica (cauliflower).

According to the results of the tested analysis,
* The MIC values of the extracts were below 1/2048 µg/mL

* In gene differentiation, AE1 decreased the expression level of TNFα involved in systemic inflammation and suppressed the expression level of IL-1α involved in the activation of proinflammatory cytokine.

Furthermore, the gene hormone expression of SRD5A1 that converts testosterone dihydrotestosterone (DHT) induced elevated androgen levels seldom found in blood and urine from patients with acne were significantly reduced by the application of AE1.

*  AE2 suppressed gene expression level of all aforementioned parameters, similar to those of AE1, including IL-1α, SRD5A1, TNFα.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "Both herbal extracts demonstrated strong antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activity in this preliminary trial. In conclusion, the topical application of these botanical extracts can be good candidates for local acne treatment".

Taken altogether, broccoli combined with cauliflower may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of acne, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Betacyanins the Natural Free Radical Scavengers

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a medical condition caused the unbalanced ratio of the levels of free radical and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

In fact, free radicals exist everywhere including the airs we breathe, the thing we eat and the environment we contact, particularly, cell metabolism in the body.

Epidemiologically, overexpression of free radicals has been found to induce damage to the cell, lipid, proteins, and alternation of cell DNA, leading to chronic diseases, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes and particularly, cancer.

Other diseases such as hypertension, dyslipidemia, peripheral artery disease, metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and obesity are also found in patients with oxidative stress.

In spite of free radicals harmful effects, one must understand that cellular oxygen species (ROS), are necessary with a moderate amount to protect our body in the mediation of antimicrobial infection, detoxification of potentially toxic compounds, and elimination of cancerous and other life-threatening cells through cytotoxicity.

Free radicals are unstable atoms with unpair of electrons on the out ring of molecules. Therefore,  in order for them to become stable, they constantly seek to donate or intercept the electron from other stable atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all unpaired electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable molecules which inhibit free radicals.

Free radicals such as nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate (NADPH) oxidase, myeloperoxidase, superoxide dismutase, and glutathione peroxidase and antioxidants such as glutathione peroxidase, catalase, and superoxide dismutase (SOD) also act on specific oxidative pathways involving both pro-oxidant and antioxidant enzymes to maintain the healthy ratio in the body.

Normally, in a healthy individual, antioxidant enzymes produced by the liver are more than enough to counter levels of free radicals in the body. However, for people with weakened immune system intake of dietary antioxidant or antioxidant supplement may be necessary.

Dr. Pignatelli P. the lead scientist in the investigation of the relationship between oxidative stress and antioxidants in CVD wrote, " 1) the most relevant enzyme systems involved in the formation and detoxification of ROS, 2) the relationship between oxidative stress and cardiovascular risk, and 3) therapeutic implications to modulate oxidative stress".

In other words, by understanding the interaction of free radicals and antioxidant, diseases associated with oxidative stress may be preventable.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers assessed the antioxidant capacity of betacyanins as indole-derived plant pigments, such as betanin, phyllocactin and betanidin.

According to the tested from the peroxyl radical generating system, betacyanins exerted a significant peroxyl radical scavenging capacity at a dose-dependent in the low concentration range (25-100 nM).

In chemical analysis, betanidin, betanin, and phyllocactin demonstrated the antioxidant capacity at the order of 10.70, 3.31 and 2.83 mol-TEA/mol-compound respectively.

The IC₅₀ values (μM) of nitrogen radical scavenging activity of betanin, phyllocactin and betanidin.was 24.48, 17.51 and 6.81, respectively.

In other words, betanidin was the strongest antioxdant that exerted radical scavenging activity compared to those of betanin, and phyllocactin.

Furthermore, expression of free radical NO was reduced by the administration of betacyanin in the low concentration range of 2.5-20 μM.

Based on the results, researchers said, "These results indicated that betacyanins have a strong antioxidant capacity, particularly betanidin with a catechol group had higher activity than those of the glycoside of betacyanins".

And, "This study demonstrated that the betacyanins will be useful as natural pigments to provide defense against oxidative stress".

Taken altogether, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry Inhibits Parameters Associated with the Onset of Colitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a medical condition characterized by the inflammation of the large intestine, including the colon, caecum, and rectum.

Most cases of colitis are caused by infection, such as bacteria like C. difficile, viruses, and parasites and inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis (UC).

However, according to the study by the Catholic University of the Sacred Heart, depending to the causes, colitis can be classified into microscopic colitis, ischemic colitis, segmental colitis associated with diverticula, radiation colitis, diversion colitis, eosinophilic colitis, and Behcet's colitis.

Most common symptoms of colitis are abdominal pain and diarrhea, bleeding per rectum, distention with bloody diarrhea, abdominal bloating and flatulence, and changes in bowel habits.

In severe cases, patients may also experience symptoms of elevated liver enzymes, leukopenia, thrombocytopenia, severe peripheral arthralgias, and chronic watery diarrhea.

Believe it or not, fifty-five percent of patients stated that UC symptoms over the past year had affected their quality of life, while physicians and nurses estimated that 35% to 37% of patients would have a reduced quality of life.

Conventionally, treatments of colitis are total depending on the type and severity of the condition. For example, in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Self-care at home through home tele-management, Web-guided therapy and pain management are the most common approach accompanied by biological therapy, if necessary.

Some researchers suggested, the promotion of the Western diet over the past few decades may be the leading causes of colitis in patients with IBD.

Dr. Jimmy K. Limdi wrote, "The parallelism between “westernization” and particularly high dietary intakes of total fat (particularly animal fats, ω-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), milk fats), refined sugars, meat and lower intakes of fruit and vegetables, implicates diet in the great risk of developing IBD".

And, "Diet may influence intestinal inflammation through several biologically plausible mechanisms including dietary antigen presentation, alterations in the gut microbiome, the mucosal immune system and epithelial barrier function among others".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry is cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine for the treatment of wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of IBD, researchers examined the effects of cranberry products on preventing dextran sulfate sodium-induced murine colitis.

According to the tested differentiation, both cranberry extract and dried cranberries-fed groups had significant activity against the disease index.

However, dried cranberries were more effective in preventing colitis compared to that of cranberry extract.

Moreover, both cranberry application also showed a significant effect on preventing the shortening of colon length,

Biomarkers associated with inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) such as colonic myeloperoxidase activity were attenuated in animals fed dried cranberries compared to the controls.

Additionally, dried cranberries also inhibited much better results against the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines caused by the injection of dextran sulfate sodium, compared to the controls.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "The current report suggests that cranberries can be applied to prevent and reduce the symptoms of IBD".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of colitis in IBD patients, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Bromelain Promotes Enzyme and Evokes Antibodies Against the Progression of Lung Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by the irregular cell in the lung tissues caused by the alternation of cells DNA.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

According to the statistics, in the US, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths. In n  2007. lung caused the death of 158,683 Americans, including 88,329 men and 70,354 women i

There are several types of lung cancer including
1. Non-small cell lung cancer
Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer grown and spread methodically and predictably, includes
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung.

*Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube.

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

2. Small cell lung cancer
Small cell lung cancer is an aggressive type of lung cancer. The cells of small cell cancer have been found to spread to distant parts of the body in a relatively early stage.
* Small cell carcinoma in which the cells are small, round and resemble oats.

* Mixed small cell/large cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining components of small cell lung carcinoma with large cell lung carcinoma.

* Combined small cell carcinoma, the malignant tumor is found in combining of a component of small cell lung carcinoma with components of non-small cell lung carcinoma

Out of many risk factors associated with the onset of lung cancer, some researchers suggested smokers are at substantial risk of the disease.

Dr. Ozlü T the lead scientist wrote, "It is estimated that deaths attributable to tobacco use will rise to 10 million by 2025, and one-third of all adult deaths are expected to be related to cigarette smoking".

And, "Tobacco use has been reported to be the main cause of 90% of male and 79% of female lung cancers. 90% of deaths from lung cancer are estimated to be due to smoking. The risk of lung cancer development is 20-40 times higher in lifelong smokers compared to non-smokers".

The results strongly suggested that if you are a smoker, your risk of lung cancer developing is rocketing.

Bromelain, a proteolytic enzyme found in pineapples (Ananas comosus) has been used in traditional medicine as an inflammatory agent and to treat pains, strains, and muscle aches and pains and ease back pain and chronic joint pain, skin diseases, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient against lung cancer, researchers examined the effects of the antitumor effect of fastuosain, a cysteine proteinase from Bromelia fastuosa on the intravenous model of lung colonization in C57Bl/6 mice.

According to the tested assays, fastuosain showed reduced expression of the marker of cancer progression (CD44) and decreased invasion by inhibiting cancer cell communication and inflammation in tumor cells.

Furthermore, fastuosain also induced cancer apoptosis by blocking the function enzymes associated with cell proliferation.

Interestingly, in green fluorescent protein-chimeric animals, treatment with fastuosain did not change the number of cells that migrated to the lung, compared to PBS-injected control mice, but the number of positive major histocompatibility complex class II cells associated with antigens was increased significantly.

In other words, fastuosain anti-lung cancer activity is mainly involved in the direct effect of the enzyme and elicitation of protective antibodies.

Taken altogether, bromelain may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of bromelain in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Lycopene Protects the Lung Against Pulmonary Fibrosis (PF)

By Kyle J. Norton

Pulmonary diseases are a class of conditions associated with the lungs, including asthma, COPD, influenza, pneumonia and tuberculosis, and lung cancer.

In other words, any diseases involved in breathing problems that reduce the function of the lung are pulmonary diseases.

The lung formed part of the respiratory system with a function the primary organs of the respiratory system to absorb oxygen to the blood and shall carbon dioxide from the blood.

Pulmonary fibrosis (PF) is a condition associated with the formation of scars in the lungs. Over time, overexpression of scar tissue can destroy lung and interfere with the lung to take oxygen to the blood.

According to the American Lung Association, the most common PF is idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Approximately 50,000 new cases of IPF are diagnosed each year.

Most common symptoms of PF are shortness of breath, dry, and hacking cough, fast, and shallow breathing, tiredness, aching joints, and muscles and clubbing of the tips of the fingers or toes.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that do not heal in a short time, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Most cases of IPF are found in patients between the ages of 50 and 70 years old, particularly in men.

Dr. Selman M, the lead scientist in the joint study led by the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México wrote, "Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis is a chronic, progressive, and usually fatal lung disorder of unknown etiology. The disease likely results from the interaction of genetic susceptibility architecture, environmental factors such as smoking, and an abnormal epigenetic reprogramming that leads to complex pathogenesis".

And, "Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis occurs in middle-aged and mainly elderly adults, and in this context, age has emerged as its strongest risk factor. However, the mechanisms linking it to aging are uncertain".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease researchers examined the effects of lycopene extracted from tomatoes on pulmonary fibrosis PF induced by bleomycin BLM in rats.

The study included 60 Sprague-Dawley rats randomly divided into 3 groups of 20 rats each for a normal control group (group C), BLM-treated group (group M), and lycopene + BLM-treated group (group L).

More precisely, group L received lycopene diluted with olive oil at a dose of 5 mg/kg body weight once a day after BLM instillation, and groups C and M received the same amounts of olive oil.

Based on the tested analysis, group L showed a significantly reduced lung coefficient (day 14, P < .01) as well as the extents of alveolitis (day 7 and 14, P < .05) and pulmonary fibrosis PF (day 14 and 28, P < .05) compared to control.

The concentration of pro-inflammatory cytokines and oxidative stress markers in the lung also a significant decrease in the lycopene treatment group compared to control.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene can partially reduce the extent of PF induced by BLM in rats. These findings suggest that the suppression of oxidative stress, the reduction of plasma TNF-alpha and NO levels, and the down-regulation of TNF-alpha in lungs contribute to the alleviation of PF in rats administered lycopene".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of pulmonary fibrosis, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Antioxidant Indicaxanthin Processes Cytoprotective Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disordered and uncontrollable way in our body, due to change of cellular DNA.

Most cases of cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of tissue of the organ.

However, at the later stage of the tumor progression, if undetected, the large size of the tumor can suppress and break the nearby small blood vessel, leading to internal bleeding and severe if the tumor also suppresses the nearby nerve cells.

Also, at this stage cancer cells can also travel a distance away from the original site to affect other healthy tissue and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

Symptoms of cancer at this stage are totally depended on the affected area, including vomiting blood in oral and lung cancers blood in the urine in bladder cancer. hoarseness in throat cancer. ... Persistent lumps in the breast and lymph cancer and indigestion or difficulty swallowing in digestive related cancers.

Cytotoxicity is a process to induce the toxic agent to kill cells including healthy cells and cancer cells.

Cytotoxic drugs or cytostatics are cytotoxic chemotherapy that destroys cancer cells. Cytotoxic drugs have been found to induce healthy and cancer cell apoptosis by inhibiting cell division. The chemo-drugs also are transported by the bloodstream to kill cancer cells a distance away in case of distant spreading.

Some herbal medicines and phytochemicals have also been found to induce a cytotoxic effect on cancer cells by exhibiting the production of free radical toxic activity and protecting the nearby healthy cells through their antioxidant activity.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of cancers, but they do know, according to epidemiological studies that age, alcohol cancer, chronic Inflammation, genetic proposition, unhealthy diet, change of hormones use of immunosuppression, infectious agents, obesity, exposure to radiation and sunlight, use of tobacco are most common risk factors associated with the onset of some specific cancers.

People with a weakened immune function are at a higher risk of cancer, comapred to people with a normal or healthy immune system.

Dr. Candeias SM, the lead scientist said, "The immune system plays a pivotal role in the maintenance of the integrity of an organism. Besides the protection against pathogens, it is strongly involved in cancer prevention, development and defense".

And, "the immune system and developing tumors are intimately intertwined. Anti-tumor immune responses can be prominently boosted by multimodal therapies aiming at the one hand to induce immunogenic tumor cell death forms and on the other hand to actively counteract the immune suppressive microenvironment based on the tumor itself".
Indicaxanthin is phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

On finding a potential compound which processes cytoprotective activity, researchers examined the effect of Indicaxanthin effects on human beta-thalassemia RBCs.

In vitro, beta-thalassemia RBCs submitted to oxidative hemolysis by cumene hydroperoxide was inhabited by the indicaxanthin at 1.0-10 microM by enhancing the resistance of the destruction of red blood cells in a dose-dependent manner.

Further, administration of indicaxanthin not only prevented lipid and hemoglobin (Hb) oxidation) to induce cell death but also restored the levels of vitamin E and GSH depletion which was retarded by oxidative hemolysis.

In vivo, indicaxanthin also improves the levels of blood from thalassemia patients by recovering the soluble cell compartment of the RBCs.

According to the spectrophotometric study, comapred to Trolox or vitamin C, indicaxanthin are more effective in the inhibition the preferred-Hb generated in solution induced by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in the diagnosis of anemia.

In other words, the phytochemical protects the quality and quantity of blood in human beta-thalassemia RBCs.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "indicaxanthin can be incorporated into the redox machinery of beta-thalassemia RBC and defend the cell from oxidation, possibly interfering with preferred-Hb, a reactive intermediate in the hydroperoxide-dependent Hb degradation".

Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a cytoprotective effects, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
