Health Food Onion Processes Anti-Atherogenic Property

By Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a condition characterized by the accumulated plaque on the arterial wall. Over time the condition can cause stiffening and hardening of the arteries, leading to cardiovascular disease.

Anti-atherogenic activity is the process to prevent or inhibit atherogenesis associated with the reduced formation of fatty plaques in the arteries.

In other words, anything, including the use of substances such as herbal remedy that prevents the blockage or narrowing of the arteries is considered atheroprotective effects.

Plaque in the arteries is formed by substances including fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood in the bloodstream. However,  most cases of atherosclerosis are also involved in the amount of cholesterol which normally returned to the liver in healthy individuals remaining in the blood due to low levels of good cholesterol (HDL) or overexpression of bad cholesterol (LDL).

In other words, an unhealthy ratio of low and high-density lipoprotein is also one of the major risk factors of atherosclerosis.

The healthy ratio of blood cholesterol is any number that is less than 4 (LDL)/ 1 (HDL).

Some researchers suggested by increasing the levels of good cholesterol in the blood, the risk of atherosclerosis can be reduced.

Dr. Feig JE and colleagues wrote, "Pharmacologic agents, such as fibrates and niacin that increase HDL cholesterol levels have been associated with decreased cardiovascular events and beneficial effects on the coronary and carotid arteries".

And, "...potential mechanisms by which HDL may exert these anti-atherogenic effects, namely through its role in reverse cholesterol transport, its effects on endothelial cells, and its anti-inflammatory/antioxidant activities".

The results strongly suggested a healthy diet including nuts, coffee, cocoa, grapes, and berries with high levels of HLD may have a profound effect on the prevention of atherosclerosis.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent ingredient which processes cardioprotection researchers examined the quercetin and polyuronide contents of rapidly dried onion (Allium cepa L. cv. Momiji No. 3) powder (OP) prepared from the outer layers (from second to the fourth scale leaves from the surface) of onion bulbs anti-atherogenic effect.

The study included rats fed a high-fat diet treated by quercetin 4'-glucoside (50%), free quercetin (30%) and quercetin 3,4'-glucoside (20%) as quercetin derivatives in boiling-water extraction.

According to the tested differentiation, in high-fat diet Wistar rats, additional OP did not show a significant difference in total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol and triglyceride concentrations compared to rats fed a high-fat diet without OP.

However, the atherogenic index (AI) associated with cardiovascular disease risk of Wistar rats fed an OP-added high-fat diet was lower compared to those fed with a diet without OP.

Moreover, the incremental elastic modulus (IEM), a measurement of the stiffness of the larger arteries from rats fed the OP-added diet was also significantly lower compared to rats fed by diet without OP.

Additionally, both rat groups were found to exert similar AI and IEM values if the rats fed the diet without OP were allowed spontaneous exercise.

In other words, OP protected the cardio-tissue by exerting an anti-atherogenic effect through other unknown mechanisms associated with regular exercise, without affecting the parameters of cholesterol.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "These results suggest that OP intake is effective for decreasing the risk of arteriosclerosis".

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of arteriosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Bioactive compound Curcumin, the Potential Treatment for Reducing Radiation Dermatitis Severity in Cancer Patients

By Kyle J. Norton

Radiation dermatitis is skin damage caused by exposure to radiation. The condition is often found in patients with radiotherapy for the treatment of cancer.

According to statistics, approximately 85% of patients with radiotherapy are affected by the symptoms of moderate-to-severe skin reactions, particularly in the first 2 weeks of the treatment.

Depending on the period of exposure and levels of skin damage, some patients with radiation of dermatitis may experience symptoms of mild skin redness, itchiness, peeling, moistness,... and blistering

In severe cases, patients may also induce painful broken skin, that prone to infection.

If you are treated with radiotherapy, you make sure that you know all the side effect for preventive measure.

Believe it or not, patients with certain medical conditions, inclduing skin disease, obesity
malnutrition, infectious diseases, and diabetes are more prone to radiation dermatitis, compared to those who do not.

Most cases of radiation dermatitis are treated successfully by topical steroid cream often prescribed by radiologist. However, if the topical cream failed, antibiotics, silver leaf nylon dressing may be prescribed to reduce symptoms and prevent infection.

Dr. Benoîte Méry, the lead scientist in the examined the risk of skin damage in breast cancer patients who were treated by radiation wrote, "54 patients were enrolled in 2013. Eight patients (14.8%) had grade ≥2 toxicity. The average weight and chest sizes were 65.5 kg and 93.6 cm, respectively. Bra cup size is significantly associated with a risk of grade 2 dermatitis [odds ratio (OR) 3.46, 95% confidence interval (CI) (1.29–11.92), p = 0.02]. Anthropometric breast fat mass measurements, such as thickness of left [OR 2.72, 95% CI (1.08–8.26), p = 0.04] and right [OR 2.45, 95% CI (0.99–7.27), p = 0.05] axillary fat, is correlated with an increased risk".

And, "Breast size and its different anthropometric measurements (thickness of left and right axillary fat, nipple-to-pectoral muscle distance) are correlated with the risk of skin toxicity".

The results suggested that other parameters, such as the area treated with radiation must also be taken into account of radiation dermatitis.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a skincare product with no side effects, researchers reviewed the chemistry of turmeric on radiation dermatitis occurred in 95% of patients with radiation therapy (RT) for cancer.

The multisite, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial included 686 breast cancer patients received four 500-mg capsules of placebo or curcumin three times daily throughout their prescribed course of RT until 1-week post-RT.

According to the severity (RDS) at the end of RT, using the RDS scale, compared to placebo, oral curcumin did not reduce radiation dermatitis severity at the end of RT.

However, curcumin group showed an improvement in fewer patients with RDS > 3.0.

In other words, oral curcumin exerted a prominent effect in inducing a trend toward reduced severity compared to the non-curcumin treated group.

According to the reports from participants, curcumin also showed a change in pain, symptoms, and quality of life, although they were not statistically significant between arms.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for reducing radiation dermatitis severity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Beans Induces Weight Loss and Reduces Risk of CVD in Obese

By Kyle J. Norton

Obesity is a medical and chronic condition caused by long-term excessive body fat accumulated. Overweight is a condition of excess body weight relative to height.

According to the Body Mass Index(BMI), people who have a BMI between 25 to 29.9 is considered overweight and a BMI of over 30 is an indication of obesity.

According to the statistic, 68% of the American population is either overweight or obese. However,
in 2016, more than 1.9 billion adults, 18 years and older, were overweight, and over 650 million were obese worldwide.

Most common causes of obesity are associated with an increased intake of energy-dense foods that are high in saturated and trans fat, processed foods and red meat and physical inactivity.

The WHO in the explanation of the causes of obesity wrote, "Changes in dietary and physical activity patterns are often the result of environmental and societal changes associated with development and lack of supportive policies in sectors such as health, agriculture, transport, urban planning, environment, food processing, distribution, marketing, and education".

Certain medical conditions such as hypothyroidism, polycystic ovary syndrome, Cushing's syndrome,..., genetic preposition and use of certain medications that can cause weight gain or water retention, such as corticosteroids, antidepressants or some seizure medications, also increases the risk of overweight and obesity.

Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are a class of conditions associated with the dysfunction of the arteries and heart, affecting the heart functioning.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Men are associated with 1/2 of the deaths due to heart disease in 2015, comapred to women.

Believe it or not, more than 63),000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are caused by heart disease.

On another hand, stroke is a medical condition caused by poor blood flow to the brain, leading to brain cell death in the affected region.

Dr. Luma Akil, the lead scientist in the investigation the risk of CVD in obese wrote, "Obesity is among the leading causes of elevated cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality and morbidity. In the present study, the associations between the increase in body mass index (BMI) and the increasing rates of CVD and high blood pressure (HBP)".

And, " Data from Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System were obtained and analyzed for obesity rates, percent of myocardial infarction, stroke, and HBP from 2005–2009".

In other words, if you are obese, your risk CVD are substantially higher comapred to non-obese individuals

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belong to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods. It can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding a potent whole food which process anti-anti-obesity activity,  researchers examined the effect of edible dry bean consumption (Phaseolus vulgaris L. including green beans) modulates diet-induced obesity in rats and mice.

Sprague-Dawley rats and a diet-induced obesity model in C57Bl/6 mice included in the vivo suggested, cooked dry bean showed a positive modulation of plasma lipids and hepatic proteins that involves in lipid biosynthesis.

In both animal species, short-term feeding of a bean-containing diet demonstrated a reduced plasma total cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol without affecting HDL-cholesterol or total TAG associated with the target of cholesterol catabolism and excretion.

More importantly, bean-fed obese mice displayed a significant weight loss within a 12 d time frame.

In other words, dry beans injection in a short-term of 7-14 day ) not only had a strong effect on weight regulatory effects but also exerted a cardioprotective against CVD obese mice.

Taken altogether, green beans or other dried beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ashwagandha Inhibits Syndromes and Diseases Associated with Chronic Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic stress is the response to emotional pressure in demanding situations over a period of time, leading to the release of hormone cortisol and adrenaline.

Most common factors associated with stress incidence include psychological pressures, such as work deadlines, and exams, high-pressure jobs, and financial difficulties.

Overtime unresolved chronic stress can cause a wide range of symptoms and increase the risk of developing physical and psychological syndromes, including anxiety and depression.

Most common symptoms of chronic stress are irritability, difficulty concentrating, rapid, disorganized thoughts, fatigue, headaches, feeling helpless, low self-esteem and difficulty sleeping.

Some patients may also experience symptoms of digestive problems, changes in appetite and loss of sexual desire.

Dr. Mohd. Razali Salleh in the examination of the chronic stress in the risk of diseases wrote, "The relationship between stress and illness is complex. The susceptibility to stress varies from person to person. Among the factors that influenced the susceptibility to stress are genetic vulnerability, coping style, type of personality and social support".

And, "Stress also alters the acid concentration in the stomach, which can lead to peptic ulcers, stress ulcers or ulcerative colitis. Chronic stress can also lead to plaque buildup in the arteries (atherosclerosis), especially if combined with a high-fat diet and sedentary living. The correlation between stressful life events and psychiatric illness is stronger than the correlation between medical or physical illness".

In other words, chronic stress if untreated can cause a wide range of chronic diseases, inclduing psychiatric illness.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean. The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of chronic stress, researchers examined the effect of Ashwagandha Root Extract on obese patients with long-term stress and anxiety.

The double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial included a total of 52 subjects under chronic stress received either Ashwagandha (300 mg) or placebo twice daily.

According to the tested differentiation at the start and at 4 and 8 weeks, including the Perceived Stress Scale and Food Cravings Questionnaire, Ashwagandha treatment group showed a significant improvement of stress associated with poor eating behaviors, including feelings of disinhibited eating, binge eating, hunger, and more ineffective attempts to control eating.

Moreover, according to the Oxford Happiness Questionnaire, Ashwagandha treatment group are more satisfied including the body weight and happier than the control.

No adverse effect had been reported by participants.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "The outcome of this study suggests that Ashwagandha root extract can be used for body weight management in adults under chronic stress".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of chronic stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Modulates the Inflammatory Response Through It's Antioxidant Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system formed part of the body's defense plays a critical role in the protection of the body against infectious organisms.

The immune system executes the defense strategy through a series of the immune response by attacking foreign substances that invade body systems to cause disease.

Variety of factors have been found to trigger immune responses include pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.

In the acute phase of tissue damage or wound, the immune white blood cells of the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound or damage and production of pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection against microbial invasion.

Most cases of microbial invasion are stopped in the acute phase of infection, and the damaged tissue is slowly healing itself. However, at this phase, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead nearby cell death and the formation of scars.

If the immune system fails to destroy all microbial invasion in the acute phase of infection within a set period in 3 to weeks, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

The continued production of low levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines overtimes regardless of the causes can induce damage to organ tissues, and irreversible chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

The Research Center for Molecular Medicine of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (Ce-M-M) wrote, "Humans have evolved highly complex immune systems that are composed of specialized immune cells that protect the host from infection and damage. But an uncontrolled immune response such as chronic inflammation can itself inflict damage".

And,  "when the immune system is compromised by a genetic mutation, individuals become more susceptible to diseases such as autoimmune disease".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention and treatment of disease associated with inflammation, researchers examined the anti-inflammatory activity of lycopene from guava (Psidium guajava L.).

The study included paw edema induced by Carrageenan, Dextran, Compound 48/80, Histamine and Prostaglandin E2 in Swiss mice treated by extract (LEG) and purified (LPG) lycopene.

According to the tested analysis, oral and intraperitoneal administration of LEG and LPG inhibited carrageenan-induced inflammation.

Furthermore, LPG (12.5mg/kg p.o.) showed significant inhibition of the edema formation induced by different phlogistic agents and immunomodulation of proteins and enzyme associated with the production of free radicals induced inflammation.

Leukocytes migration in paw tissue and the peritoneal cavity associated with inflammatory response was reduced. MPO concentration and GSH levels were also increased. by the application of LEG and LPG.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "lycopene-rich extract from red guava has a beneficial effect on acute inflammation, offering protection against the consequences of oxidative stress by downregulating inflammatory mediators and inhibiting gene expression involved in inflammation".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of acute inflammation, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Onion Protects the Upper Aerodigestive Tract (UADT) Against the Risk of Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Aerodigestive tract is the combined organs and tissues of the respiratory tract and the upper part of the digestive tract including the lip, tongue, major salivary glands, gums and adjacent oral cavity tissues, floor of the mouth, tonsils, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx and other oral regions, nasal cavity, accessory sinuses, middle ear, and larynx.

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissue of a specific organ due to the alternation of cell DNA.

The upper aerodigestive tract cancer a type of invasive cancer that starts in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the aerodigestive tract before proliferating to deeper layer to form a tumor.

According to the statistics provided by the Scottish Health Service, upper aerodigestive tract cancer accounts for approximately 4% of all malignancies with cancers of salivary glands, gums, nasopharynx, and nasal cavity and accessory sinuses. Epidermoid carcinomas account for greater than 95% of all cases.

Epidemiologically, aging, male gender, ethnicity are some of the most common prevalent factors associated with the incidences.

The 5-year relative survival rate of upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) was approximately 50%, depending on the type of UADT.

Dr. F. Bravi, the lead scientist in the examination of the diet patterns in the risk of UADT wrote, "
The most consistent findings are the beneficial role of a dietary pattern based on fruit and vegetables or nutrients mostly contained in such foods, and the unfavorable role of an alcohol drinker pattern. A possible unfavorable role of patterns based on meats and animal products emerged as well".

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potent compound for the prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal tract cancer, researchers examined the effect of total allium, garlic, and onion intake on the risk of cancer of the upper aerodigestive tract (UADT).

The study identified 21 case-control and four cohort studies through the searching data of published observational studies, using a meta-analytic approach and random effects models.

* The overall relative risks (RR) for the squamous cell carcinoma of the UADT were 0.72 (95% CI 0.57-0.91) for onion for the highest versus the lowest consumption.

* Onion showed a strong inverse relation in case-control studies with the RR of 0.56.

* In Chinese studies onion showed a lesser effect compared to garlic for esophageal than for head and neck cancers.

* Believe it or not, there was no relation between allium vegetable intake and adenocarcinoma of the esophagus.

These results strongly suggested that onion process a significant anti-upper aerodigestive tract (UADT) cancer effect, depending on the types of gastrointestinal tract cancer.

Collectively, researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "We found a moderate inverse association between allium vegetable intake and the risk of squamous cell carcinoma of the UADT in case-control studies".

Taken altogether, onion processed a higher mount of onionin A (ONA) may be considered a remedy for the treatment of upper aerodigestive tract cancer effect, depending on the types of UADT, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Lycopene Protects the Liver Cells Against the Risk of Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a medical and chronic liver condition associated with fat accumulated over time, without the presence of excessive alcohol use.

NAFLD can be classified into the non-inflammatory fatty liver (NAFL) and inflammatory nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH).

Untreated Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has been found to induce cirrhosis, a major cause of liver cancer.

According to world statistics, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is normally known as a disease of the Western world. However, today, due to the economic prosperity of Southeast Asia over the past few decades,, the disease also was found in a large number of population in the cities, causing concerns of many scientists in the region.

The prevalence rate of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) among the more affluent regions of China,  is approximately 15%. The number may decrease substantially if the poor rural populations where obesity is non-existence are also taking into account.

In the US, over 100 million people have non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and the condition is more double over the past 20 years. Today, the disease also is also prevalent liver disease in children.

Most people at the early stage NAFLD are asymptomatic. However, as the disease progression into the later stage, most patients experience symptoms of right upper abdominal discomfort, fatigue, and/or malaise, and jaundice(20) with yellowing of the skin and eyes.

The exact causes of NAFLD are not identified. Some researchers suggested that certain risk factors such as long-term use of certain medications, genetic preposition, insulin resistance, high cholesterol and triglycerides, polycystic ovary syndrome, metabolic syndrome, obesity, and type 2 diabetes are associated with the onset of the disease.

Some researchers suggested that unhealthy diet such as the promotion of a high-fat diet the Western world over the last few decades may also have a strong implication on NAFLD.

Dr. Jensen VS, the lead scientist in the study high-fat diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, wrote, "In humans and animal models, excessive intake of dietary fat, fructose, and cholesterol have been linked to the development of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD)".

And, " Only HFr-fed rats developed dyslipidemia as characterized by higher levels of plasma triglycerides compared to all other groups (p < 0.0001). Hepatic dysfunction and inflammation was confirmed in HFD-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.0001), TNF-alpha (p < 0.001) and plasma β-hydroxybutyrate (p < 0.0001), and in NASH-fed rats by elevated levels of hepatic MCP-1 (p < 0.01), increased hepatic macrophage infiltration (p < 0.001), and higher plasma levels of alanine aminotransferase (p < 0.0001) aspartate aminotransferase (p < 0.05), haptoglobin (p < 0.001) and TIMP-1 (p < 0.01) compared to Control".

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potential compound for the prevention of alcoholic fatty liver disease, researchers evaluated the effect of lycopene (LYC) on chronic or excessive alcohol intake-related liver injury.

Lycopene inhibited the expression of cytochrome P450 2E1 (CYP2E1) enzyme associated with chronic and excessive alcoholic drinking.

Where cytochrome P450 2E1(CYP2E1) not only represent the major enzymes in the CNS that catalyze ethanol oxidation but also plays a vital role in alcohol, drug, toxin, lipid, and carcinogen metabolism associated with reactive oxygen species-induced oxidative stress that promotes hepatocyte injury and death.

In other words, excessive alcohol drinking induced production of free radicals that lead to liver damage in the initiation of inflammation, fibrosis, and lipid peroxidation.

More precisely, lycopene prevented liver injury in the induction of alcoholic fatty liver disease by targeting the expression of CYP2E1 induction.

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of alcoholic fatty liver disease, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
