Herbal Turmeric, a Natural Prevention and Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome

By Kyle J. Norton

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions that increase the risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes, including too much fat around the waist, high blood pressure, triglycerides, and blood sugar, and low HDL cholesterol.

People who have 3 or more aforementioned conditions are at a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. However, most people with metabolic syndrome have never developed cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes.

Most common symptoms of metabolic symptoms are depending totally on the clustered conditions, including thirst and urination, fatigue, and blurred vision due to high blood glucose. However, in patients with no condition of hyperglycemia,  metabolic syndrome is asymptomatic.

Epidemiologically, aging, ethnicity, obesity, medical condition such as diabetes, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease, and polycystic ovary syndrome are most risk factors found in patients with the syndrome.

Conventionally, treatment of metabolic syndrome is totally depending on the cluster of condition. People with fat around the waist or obese are recommended to lose weight in a weight management program accompanied by diet change.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of the Western diet in the US over the past few decades may have a strong effect in inducing the widespread metabolic syndrome.

Dr. Drake I, the lead scientist wrote, "The 'Western' dietary pattern was inversely associated with HDL-cholesterol and positively with all other response variables (both at baseline and follow-up), but there was no association with LDL at follow-up".

And, " In conclusion, this study supports current food-based dietary guidelines suggesting that a 'Western' dietary pattern with high intakes of sugar-sweetened beverages and red and processed meats and low intakes of wine, cheese, vegetables, and high-fiber foods is associated with detrimental effects on cardio-metabolic health".

The results clearly suggested if you are following a traditional diet with high fruits and vegetable and fewer in processed food, saturated and trans fat, and red meat accompanied with moderate exercise daily, your risk metabolic syndrome can be decreased substantially.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound which processes an anti metabolic syndrome activity, researchers examined the Black seeds and Turmeric alone and its co-administration in lower doses among patients with metabolic syndrome (MetS).

The double-blind-randomized-controlled trial included a total of 250 healthy males with MetS randomized to either Black seeds (1.5g/day), Turmeric (2.4g/day), its combination (900mg Black seeds and 1.5g Turmeric/day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

Based on the analysis, compared to the baseline, at 4 weeks, Black seed and Turmeric alone showed improvement the parameters associated with the risk of MetS including the body-mass-index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), and body-fat-percent (BF%).

Furthermore, also at week 4, the combination improved all parameters involved in the risk of MetS, except HDL-cholesterol with lower fasting blood glucose (FBG) and LDL-cholesterol, compared to placebo.

Moreover, at 8 weeks, Black seeds reduced lipids and FBG, whereas turmeric reduced LDL-cholesterol and CRP, compared to placebo.

More importantly, the combination group with 60% dose of the individual herbs showed an improvement in all parameters from baseline, compared placebo.

In other words, the combination showed complete inhibition of all parameters associated with the onset of metabolic syndrome compared the selected inhibition of individual herbal medicine. Black seeds + Turmeric showed much better efficacy than the use of Black seed and Turmeric alone.

Based on the results, researchers said, " The combination of Black seeds and Turmeric can, therefore, be recommended with lifestyle modification as a starting point for patients with MetS to halt its future complications and progression".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be used alone or combination with Black seed for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Coltsfoot (Tussilago farfara) In Reducing the Risk and Progression of Lung Cancer In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases caused by cells growth and multiplication disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of the DNA.

After colonizing the entire tissues of the specific organ, the oversize tumor cell can travel a distance away from the originated site to invade other healthy tissues, via lymph or blood.

Most advanced stage of cancer may result in the death of the patients.

The lung is a vital organ located near the backbone on either side of the heart with major functions to inhale oxygen from the air to the bloodstream that nourishes the body cells and exhale carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a chronic condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the lung tissue.

Most cases of lung cancer caused by the alternation of calls DNA begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung.

At the advanced stage, the cancer cell from the lung can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of fluid and blood, leading to the secondary metastasis.

According to statistics, in 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Also in 2017, lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians.

Smoking although is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.

Some researchers suggested that lung cancer in many incidences are associated with oxidative stress as found in advanced lung cancer patients.

Dr. Filaire E the lead scientist in the examination of the oxidative stress in the risk lung cancer said, "Oxidative stress also plays important roles in the pathogenesis of many diseases, including aging, degenerative disease, and cancer. Among cancers, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer in the Western world".

And, "Distinct measures of primary and secondary prevention have been investigated to reduce the risk of morbidity and mortality caused by lung cancer. Among them, it seems that physical activity and nutrition have some beneficial effects".

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of year to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung disease, researchers examined the effects of purified a polysaccharide, TFPB1, from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara on lung cancer.

In vitro, TFPB1 not only inhibited cell proliferation but also induced cancer cell apoptosis in of A549 cells.

More precisely, TFPB1 kills lung cancer cells by inhibiting the expression of kinase and proteins such as phosphorylation of Akt and Bcl-2 expression involved in multiple cellular processes including apoptosis and exhibiting the protein associated with caspase involved in pro-apoptosis such as Bax expression.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "TFPB1 exhibited anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic effect partly depending on the suppression of Akt signaling pathway." and "These findings provided us a potential chemotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of human non-small cell lung cancer".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the treatment of lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Beans, the Best Antioxidants Against Diseases Associated with Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atoms which inhibit oxidation induced by free radicals.

Free radicals are highly unstable atoms. Internally, free radicals are produced by body cell metabolism. Externally, free radical can enter our body from the environment, such as the air we breathe, the food we eat and the water we drink.

In other words, any chemicals compounds or molecules which process an oxygen atom can be free radicals in a chemical reaction with other atoms.

Oxidative stress can either be caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

According to the epidemiological studies, free radicals are dangerous to human health in excessive amount. Overexpression of free radicals induced oxidative stress has been found to damage the lipid, and protein and induce the alternation of healthy cell DNA, inducing the pathogenesis of various disorders and diseases.

Some researchers suggested that by balancing the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.

Dr. Monica H Carlsen wrote, "A plant-based diet protects against chronic oxidative stress-related diseases. Dietary plants contain variable chemical families and amounts of antioxidants".

And, "there are several thousand-fold differences in antioxidant content of foods. Spices, herbs, and supplements include the most antioxidant-rich products in our study, some exceptionally high. Berries, fruits, nuts, chocolate, vegetables, and products thereof constitute common foods and beverages with high antioxidant values".

Beans are seeds of several genera of the flowering plant family Fabaceae, including the common bean, green bean, and French bean.

On finding a potent veggie for the prevention of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the effects of bean extracts antioxidant activity.

According to the tested differentiation on chemical analysis, polyphenols, such as gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, epicatechin, myricetin, formononetin, caffeic acid, and kaempferol found in the beans exerted a significant antioxidant activity (AA) against to the activity of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical by 50% (EC50) ranged from 1.568 ± 0.041 to 66.572 ± 3.197 mg.

Furthermore, the extracts also inhibited the proliferation of the human epithelial colorectal adenocarcinoma (Caco-2) cells, human breast cancer cells MCF-7, and A549 NSCLC cell line through its cytotoxic activity without affecting the nearby healthy cells.

Moreover, cooking beans has been found to reduce antioxidant activity only marginally.

Most importantly, all tested beans showed no significant differences in the biological activities within the same variety, before and after cooking.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " Qualitative and quantitative differences in phenolic composition between the groups of beans influenced the biological activities".

In other words, the antioxidant efficacy of beans was attributed by all chemical compounds that work synergistically to inhibit the diseases involved in oxidative stress.

Taken altogether, beans may be used as an adjunct therapy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Juice improves Quality of Life in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton

Rheumatoid Arthritis is a chronic disorder characterized by inflammation of the flexible (synovial) joints and tissues and organs in the body.

The disease affects more women than men and generally occurs after the ages of 40, causing the diminished quality of life of many elders.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) affects over 52 millions of adults in the US alone, including 294,000 children under age 18 with some form of arthritis or rheumatic conditions.

Rheumatoid arthritis was found to induce bone loss through elevating bone resorption without increasing bone formation.

Patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) often associate to valgus deformities of the feet and deformities of gait due to body function due to an effort to support the collapsing longitudinal arch of the foot.

Long-term bone damage and the prolonged onset of the disease can induce deformities of hand and wrist and small peripheral joints (such as fingers and wrist) due to chronic inflammation.

The effects of muscle strength in patients with RA may contribute to the prevalence of functional limitations physically that can affect daily living and quality of life.

Furthermore, rheumatoid nodules, lump on the skin, closed to the joint have been found to affect the joints of patients with RA.

Moreover, morning stiffness, a marker of inflammatory activity that reflects functional disability and pain is a very common symptom of patients in the early stage of rheumatoid arthritis.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of inflammatory disease, researchers examined the effect of cranberry juice consumption on several inflammatory biomarkers and on the disease activity of patients with RA.

The prospective study included 41 women diagnosed with RA.randomly divided to control group (n = 18) maintained their usual diet and the cranberry group (n = 23) received 500 mL/d of low-calorie cranberry juice.

Compared to baseline values, the cranberry group showed a decrease in the values of Disease Activity Score 28 (DAS28) (P = 0.048) and anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP), the antibody present in most rheumatoid arthritis patients (P = 0.034) after 90 d of treatment without affecting the inflammatory biomarkers.

The results strongly suggested that cranberry juice improves the rheumatoid arthritis symptoms and decrease the disease activity that benefits RA patients.

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the improvement of rheumatoid arthritis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene, the Phytochemical that Protects Us Against Chemical and Natural Toxins

By Kyle J. Norton

Natural toxins are toxic chemical produced by living organisms with an aim to protect themselves from predators. Therefore, these types of toxin do not cause harm to the host but can be very deadly to other organisms if they are consumed.

Most common types of natural toxins produced by plants are alkaloids such as pyrrolizidine alkaloids and glycoalkaloids, cyanogenic glycosides, lectins, saponins, and antinutrients.

Chemicals toxins are chemicals or substances that not only are harmful to the environment but a hazard to human health if inhaled, ingested or absorbed through the skin.

Most common types of chemical toxins are inorganic compounds such as mercury and carbon monoxide, and organic compounds, such as methyl alcohol.

The Institute of Natural Medicine suggested that exposure to chemical and natural toxins may cause
* Enzymes dysfunction, including antioxidant enzymes that prevent the free-radical damage that causes damage to protein, lipid and cell DNA.

* Reduced mineral absorption that can induce bone disease.

* Damage to the organs, particularly in the detox organs, such as the liver and kidney

* Damage cells DNA and modify genetic expressions of the host that initiates the onset of cancer.

* Alternation of the body hormones by inducing, inhibiting, mimicking, and blocking hormone production.

Lycopene is a phytochemical in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and perform various functions in photosynthesis.

With an aim to protect the body against environmental, occupational, and therapeutic toxins, researchers examined the lycopene anti-toxic agents activity.

High-intake of lycopene administration has been effective in decreasing the risk of both natural toxins including mycotoxins, bacterial toxins, and chemical toxins including heavy metals, pesticides as well as herbicides.

Phytochemical carotenoids processed abundantly bioactive compound lycopene have also found to process antioxidative activity against long-term overexpression of free radicals, antiapoptotic activity against cancer cells, radical scavenging activity against the initiation of free radical chain reaction, and chelating activity against chemical toxins.

Furthermore, lycopene also played a critical role in the modulation of inflammatory pathways that facilitate the onset of protein, lipid, and cellular DNA damage.

Based on the results, researchers said, " This review summarizes available data from several recent studies about lycopene and its role against chemical and natural toxicants".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in carotenoids may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with chemical and natural toxins, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Onion, the Anti- Platelet Aggression Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Antiplatelet activity is an action that prevent and treat blood clots.

Platelets are tiny blood cells that protect the other to prevent injury and infection by forming clots to stop bleeding.

Platelets are made in the bone marrow that also produces white and red blood cells.

Diseases associated with low and abnormal blood platelet include
* Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by low blood platelet due to abnormal function of the bone marrow that makes platelets. patients with thrombocytopenia due to the low quantity of blood platelets may experience symptoms of a bruise, internal bleeding, nosebleed.

Long-term untreated thrombocytopenia has been found to increase the risk of cancer, liver disease, pregnancy, infections, and an abnormal immune system.

* Essential thrombocythemia is a disease associated with overproducing blood platelets by the bone marrow, leading to symptoms of  blood clots that form and block the blood supply to the brain or the heart.

* Secondary thrombocytosis is also another condition caused by too many platelets produced by the bone marrow.

Most cases of secondary thrombocytosis are associated with other medical conditions such as anemia. Most common symptoms of secondary thrombocytosis are an infection, inflammation, some types of cancer, and reactions to medicines.

* Platelet dysfunction is a rare condition that links to poor platelet function. In other words, it is a disease caused by abnormal function of blood platelets without affecting the numbers of platelets in the blood.

This means the number of platelets is normal, but the platelets don't work as they should. Medicines such as aspirin can cause this.  It's important to know which medicines affect platelets. Know that while taking these medicines you have an increased risk of bleeding.

Antiplatelet agents used in conventional medicine that process the main function to prevent platelets from clumping. However, they also exert a similar effect as of anticoagulation in the prevention of blood clots from forming and growing.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belonging to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of platelet aggression against the risk of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the pharmacological aspect of onion antiplatelet activity in  human subjects

The study included 12 human subjects received yellow hybrid storage onions that are steamed for 0, 1, 3, 6, 10, and 15 min.

According to the tested assay, steamed onions not only destroyed the antiplatelet activity between 3 and 6 min of steaming but also stimulated platelet activity at 10 min of steaming without affecting the polyphenolic concentration and soluble solids.

Furthermore, cooked onion extracts also reverse the inhibitory effect on blood platelets by 25%, compared to a steamed onion.

The findings were consistent across all donors.

The results strongly suggested that cooked onion preparations may result in destruction or reversal of antiplatelet activity.

Moreover, in examining the anti-blood platelet activity of f2 different cooking systems of a convection oven and microwaves) in several time-temperature variables, researchers also found that
* Whole", "quarters", and "crushed" onions lost their antiplatelet activity after 30, 20, and 10 min of oven heating, respectively.

* Extensively cooked onions may stimulate platelet aggregation instead of antiplatelet aggregation.

Collectively, raw onion processed anti antiplatelet activity compared to the cooked and extensive cooked onion in the promotion of platelet aggregation

Taken altogether, raw onion may be considered an antiplatelet remedy for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Protects the Cardiac Fibroblasts (CFs) of the Heart

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart formed part of the circulatory system pumps blood through the blood vessels. The blood provided not only nutrients to cell metabolism but also remove waste during the process.

Heart disease is a class of disease associated with blood vessels and the heart.

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Approximately, over 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are from heart disease.

A fibroblast associated with wound healing is a type of biological cell that produces collagen, and the structural framework (stroma) for body tissues.

Cardiac fibroblasts accompanied by myocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells are the permanent cellular constituents of the heart.

Cardiac fibroblasts play a critical role in the structure and function of the heart tissues involved in blood circulation to provide nutrients and fluids to the body daily functioning.

Under normal condition, cardiac fibroblasts are activated by the immune system following injury with the function to repair and remodeling tissues of the heart.

Activation of cardiac fibroblasts for heart tissue healing during the post-infarction has been found to involve several processes in the transition to the proliferative phase of infarct healing, including the stimulation of inflammatory reaction, followed by rapid suppression of proinflammatory cytokines and subsequent resolution of the leukocytic infiltrate.

Any disruption of the process may cause forming heart scars and reduce the function of the heart tissue to perform its normal function, leading to many cardiac pathologic conditions, including hypertensive heart disease and aortic stenosis.

Dr. Eva A Rog-Zielinska, the lead scientist, wrote, "Although myocardial infarction (MI) may be the most common cause of ventricular scarring in humans, scars also occur in non-ischaemic cardiomyopathies due to replacement fibrosis (see “Glossary”) during both pressure/volume overload [] and normal ageing [], although aging is not necessarily associated with fibrosis per se []".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings a potential compound for the treatment of myocardial infarction complications, researchers examined the efficacy of curcumin the role of curcumin on cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) after myocardial infarction (MI).

The study included MI induced by permanent ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery in adult mice received curcumin for 4 weeks.

Based on the results of the tested analysis, curcumin significantly attenuated collagen deposition associated with overgrowth, hardening, and/or scarring of various tissues in vivo.

Cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) proliferation and migration and expression of the matrix (MMP) associated with inflammation induced by MI were inhibited by the infection of curcumin.

Furthermore, curcumin pretreatment also activated the expression of a gene which was inhibited by MI involved in the regulation of apoptosis, autophagy, DNA repair, inflammation

Researchers after taking other factors into account wrote, "Our results provide new insights into the mechanism underlying the anti-fibrotic effects of curcumin in the heart".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of cardiac fibroblasts (CFs) after MI, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
