Phytochemical Betacyanins, the Best Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable molecules produced by the liver or from the intake of diet sources, including foods and supplementation.

The function of antioxidants is to protect the body against oxidation induced by free radicals.

Free radicals are a normal byproduct of oxygen metabolism. Certain environmental and behavioral factors such as exposure to radiation and toxic chemicals and smoking can dramatically increase the number of free radicals in the body.

Free radicals have an unpaired electron on the outer ring. Therefore, in order to maintain stable, free radicals must donate or intercept an electron from other atoms, causing the domino's reaction that can not be stopped until all single electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Oxidative stress is a result of the imbalanced ratio of the levels of free radical compared to antioxidants.

In other words, if the antioxidant enzymes no longer can perform the function to balance the free radicals in the body, oxidative stress occurs.

Epidemiologically, oxidative stress has been found to cause protein, lipid, and alternation of cellular DNA, leading to the incidence of chronic illness and cancers.

Dr. V. Hajhashemi, the lead scientist in the elevation of the effects of antioxidants for disease prevention wrote, "Free radicals are produced continuously in the cells as part of normal cellular function, however, excess production might play a role in pathophysiology of many disease conditions, including cancer, Alzheimer's disease, atherosclerosis and some of the drug-induced toxicity".

And, " Many basic research studies and observational epidemiologic studies in human suggest that antioxidants can prevent oxidative damage".

In other words, by maintaining the healthy ratio of antioxidants and free radicals, diseases associated with oxidative stress can be preventable.

Some researchers suggested, maintaining a balanced ratio free radicals and antioxidants are the best way for good health.

Betacyanins are phytochemicals in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a potential compound for the treatment of oxidative stress, researchers examined the on betacyanins phenol antioxidants activity against peroxyl radicals generated from the azo-initiated oxidation of methyl linoleate in methanol and of a heterogeneous aqueous/soybean phosphatidylcholine liposomal system

In major compound betanin, researchers found that the phytochemical, a weak retarder in methanol is an effective chain-breaking antioxidant in the liposomal model.

In other words, kinetic solvent activity and partition in lipid bilayers may affect betanin antioxidant property.

In betanidin, another bioactive compound shows a significant effect on chain terminating antioxidant in both models.

In ROS activity, betanidin demonstrated a stronger radical-scavenging activity compared to betanin, in terms of both radical-scavenging rates constant and stoichiometric factor.

The results suggest that betacyanins exert significant anti-ROS expression by blocking the initiation and progression and induce-termination of a free radical chain reaction through the bioactive compound betanin and betanidin.

Based on the finding, researchers said, " Either betanin or betanidin incorporated in liposomes with alpha-tocopherol had additive effects, supporting the partition of the pigments in the bilayer and lipoperoxyl radical reduction".

Taken altogether, betacyanins may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betacyanins in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli Protects the Neurons in Post Myocardial Infarction

By Kyle J. Norton

Acute brain infarction is the severe and medical emergency characterized by the obstruction of the blood supply to the brain, causing local death of the neurons in the brain. Prompt treatment can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

The occurrence and extent of brain infarction are associated with three basic factors, including the site of arterial occlusion, the rapidity of arterial occlusion, and the presence or absence of collateral circulation.

In other words, brain infarction can be classified into myocardial infarction due to plaque rupture and myocardial oxygen supply-demand imbalance secondary to other acute illnesses.

The exact causes of a blood clot that induce acute brain infarction are unknown. However, the trouble with speaking and understanding, confusion, sudden numbness, weakness or paralysis in your face, arm or leg, headache and the trouble with walking are some of the most common symptoms found in patients with post-myocardial infarction.

Depending on the severity of the acute infarction, in serious cases, patients may also experience symptoms, paralysis of the face, arm or leg, trouble with seeing in one or both eyes.

Although, there are many factors associated with the risk of acute infarction. some researchers suggested an unhealthy diet may have a strong and negative implication on the onset of the condition.

Dr. Guo J, the lead scientist at the Peking Union Medical College & Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences wrote, "Some dietary patterns are risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI)".
And, "Several dietary frequencies (serves per week) including vegetables, fruits and tofu were closely associated with a decrease of AMI risk. Carbohydrate pattern showed a weak relationship with AMI. We observed a U-shaped association between frequencies of fat and protein pattern and AMI risk. Excessive fat intake increased the AMI risk.".

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention and treatment of heart disease, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane found in broccoli against myocardium from ischaemic reperfusion injury by comparing the fresh broccoli and cooked broccoli cardioprotection.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

The study compared the two groups of rats were fed with fresh (steamed) broccoli or cooked broccoli for 30 d, while a third group was given vehicle only for the same period of time.

Based on the differentiation of isolated working hearts that were subjected to 30 min ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion. 30 min ischemia followed by 2 h of reperfusion, both cooked and steamed broccolis displayed significantly improved post-ischemic ventricular function and reduced myocardial infarction and cardiomyocyte apoptosis compared to control.

Additionally, both cooked and steamed broccolis demonstrated significantly enhanced the induction of the survival signaling proteins and inhibition of death signaling proteins associated with heart tissue damage.

Furthermore, both cooked and steamed broccoli also protected the heart cells against overexpression of free radicals by enhancing the levels of antioxidants.

However, steamed broccoli was found to be more cardioprotective abilities compared to those of cooked broccoli.

Moreover, levels of Trx2 and Trx reductase associated with redox activity were only enhanced in the steamed broccoli group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " The results of the present study documented superior cardioprotective properties of the steamed broccoli overcooked broccoli because of the ability of fresh broccoli to perform redox signaling of Trx".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed abundantly SFN may be considered supplements as a cardioprotective remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cranberry, the Anti Candida Albicans Overgrowth Natural Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

The fungus is a class of primitive organism, including mushrooms, mold, and mildew.found in the air, in the soil, on plants, and in water.

Fungi reproduce through tiny spores in the air if you inhale the spores, it may spread to cause fungal infection, often starting in the lungs or on the skin.

Similar to other bacterias, there are millions of different fungal species on Earth, but only about 300 are known to infect people.

Conventionally, fungal infection is treated with antibiotics, including topical antifungal ointments or oral medications, depending on the severity of the disease.

Candida is a class of yeasts that cause fungal infections worldwide.

Candida albicans is a member of a large group of an organism whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeast and mold that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

Under normal circumstances, Candida albicans do not cause harm to human, but overgrowth results in candidiasis.

Oral candidiasis is an oral condition infected by the fungal C. albicans found mostly in people with a weakened immune system including patients who are taking the immune-suppressive medicine.

Biofilms are microbial communities in which cells stick to each other and often also to a surface.

Symptoms of oral Candida overgrowth are worse in the damp day, including persistence drowsiness, lack of coordination, headaches, mood swing, loss of balance, rashes, bad breath, dry mouth, and postnasal drip.

There are many risk factors associated with Candida overgrowth including medical conditions that cause weakened immune system, inhalant medicine, low level of stomach acids, and pregnancy.

Some researchers suggested aging may be one of the major risk factors that cause Candida overgrowth

Dr. Aikaterini Flevari, the lead scientists said, "Candida species remain the most important cause of opportunistic infections worldwide, affecting predominantly patients over 65 years old, while they are considered to be the fourth most common cause of nosocomial bloodstream infections".

And, "The rapidly growing elderly population has specific physiological characteristics, which makes it susceptible to colonization and subsequent infection due to Candida species".

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of Candida albicans, researchers examined the effects of polyphenol-rich cranberry extracts on dual-species Streptococcus mutans-Candida. albicans biofilms.

On S. mutans-C. albicans biofilms grown on saliva-coated hydroxyapatite discs (s-HA) mounted on the high-throughput Amsterdam Active Attachment model, cranberry extracts(ACE)/vehicle control was applied at the five minutes just before biofilm growth and subsequently, for similar exposure times, after 12 hours and 24 hours of biofilm growth.

Based on the analysis, treatment of ACE at doses of 500 to 1,000 μg/mL showed significant reductions in acidogenicity and metabolic activity, compared to the control.

Biovolumes of the EPS (P=0.003) and microbial biofilm components associated with the overgrowth of Candida albicans were significant decreased by the application of ACE.

According to the qualitative assessment of confocal biofilm images, cranberry extract disrupted biofilm structural architecture that causes Candida albicans.

Moreover, ACE showed a significantly fewer S. mutans (P=0.006) and C. albicans (P=0.036) compared to control.

Based on the findings, researchers aid, "Cranberry extracts inhibited cariogenic virulence properties of S. mutans-C. albicansdual-species biofilms in an in vitro model".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered a remedy for the treatment of Candida albicans,, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Lycopene Protects the Kidney Cell Integrity Against Damage

By Kyle J. Norton

The kidneys are a pair of kidney-shaped organs located on either side of your spine with a function to filter out the wastes from the blood before passing the wastes through urinary secretion.

Besides accompanied by liver and skin to form a detox system in the body,  the kidneys also process significant effects that maintain the body fluid balance, regulate the production of red blood cell and high blood pressure.

Kidney damage can be acute such as an overdose of toxin or chronic. Acute kidney diseases can be cured if the underlying cause is found.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a slow and progressive disease which can lead to kidney failure over time.

CKD can cause the dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and wastes build up in the body.

According to statistics, approximately 14 percent of the US general population suffer from CKD.  More than 661,000 Americans are living with kidney failure, inclduing 468,000 individuals on dialysis.

People with reduced kidney function do not experience any symptoms until the advanced stage. In other words, kidney disease in the advanced stage can lead to dangerous levels of fluid, electrolytes and building toxins in the body.

Out of many risk factors associated with CKD, some researchers suggested high blood pressure is one most prevalent factor found in most patients.

In this advanced stage, patients also experience symptoms of gastrointestinal discomforts, weakness,
sleep problems, changes of urination, decreased mental sharpness, muscle twitches and cramps and swelling of feet and ankles, particularly the persistent itching.

Some researchers suggested high blood pressure is one of the major causes of CKD.

The Natural Kidney Foundation wrote, "More than half the people with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have high blood pressure. High blood pressure increases the chance that kidney disease will get worse"

And "Following your treatment plan carefully and keeping your blood pressure under control can help to prevent these complications".

Lycopene is a phytochemical found in tomato in the class of carotenoid, a natural pigment with no vitamin A activity found abundantly in tomatoes and other red fruits and vegetables, such as red carrots, watermelons, and papayas,

Tomatoes provide about 80% of the lycopene in the world diet. In plants, lycopene protects the host against excessive photodamage and performs various functions in photosynthesis.

On finding a potent ingredient for the protection of kidney damage, researchers examined the effect of lycopene on the nephrotoxicity of deltamethrin.

The study included male albino rats that were divided into four groups with10 animals each: group I served as control, which received standard diet; group II received oral administration of deltamethrin (1.28 mg/kg per day) for 30 days; group III received both deltamethrin and lycopene (1 mg/kg per day); group IV received lycopene (1 mg/kg per day).

According to the results of at the end of the experiment, deltamethrin treated group not only showed significantly increased expression of the pro-inflammatory cytokine, TNF-α but also caused mild necrotic changes of the kidney associated with localized cell death due to interruption of the blood supply.

Renal proximal tubules in the deltamethrin treated group also showed an increased number and irregular shape of mitochondria causing the reduced function of the cell in the kidney to take nutrients from the cell breaks it down and turns it into energy.

Vacuolar degeneration in the epithelial cells, increased number of lysosomes and loss of apical microvilli associated with the reduced function of kidney cells in the absorptive and secretory function, may lead to the decrease of the detoxed function of the kidney.

Moreover, focal segmental thickening and the duplication of the glomerular basement membrane and podocyte changes involved in kidney damage. were also found in the deltamethrin treated group.

Pretreatment of lycopene demonstrated a strong effect either restored the kidney tissue damage or inhibited the parameters that cause the kidney disease.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Histopathological and ultrastructural study showed some protective effect of lycopene on kidney tissues".

Taken altogether, lycopene found in tomato may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of kidney damage, pending on the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of lycopene in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Not All Onions Process Antithrombotic and Thrombolytic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Antithrombotic activity is an action that reduces the formation of blood clots.
Antithrombotics are the medicines used therapeutically for prevention or treatment of dangerous coagulation, particularly in the acute thrombus.

Conventionally, medications that treat blood clots can be classified into anticoagulants and antiplatelet drugs
* Anticoagulants; The main function of anticoagulation is slow down clotting by reducing fibrin formation. However, they also used to prevent clots from forming and growing.

* Antiplatelet agents; the main function of antiplatelet agents is to prevent platelets from clumping together. However, they also exert a similar effect to those of anticoagulation.

Thrombolytic activity is an action that dissolves dangerous clots in blood vessels, improves blood flow, with an aim to prevents damage to tissues associated with heart diseases and stroke.

Thrombolysis, also known as thrombolytic therapy, are types of conventional medicine that performs the thrombolytic activity.

Most common agents of thrombolytic therapy are Eminase (anistreplase), Retavase (reteplase), and Streptase (streptokinase, kabikinase).

There are many factors associated with the risk of blood clots including bone fractures, major surgery, use of birth control pills and pregnancy.

Epidemiologically, obesity, cigarette smoking, cancer, chemotherapy and personal history of abnormal blood clotting are also the prevalent factors found in the patients with thrombus.

The onion is a plant in the genus Allium, belongings to the family Alliaceae, a close relation of garlic. It is often called the "king of vegetables" because of its pungent taste and found in a large number of recipes and preparations spanning almost the totality of the world's cultures.

Depending on the variety, an onion can be sharp, spicy, tangy, pungent, mild or sweet.

On finding a potential compound which promotes blood thinning, researchers examined the effects of onion extracts antithrombotic effect.

According to the results of the experiment
* Toyohira, one of onion variety, showed significant antithrombotic activity both in vitro and in vivo.

* Moreover, Toyohira not only exhibited thrombolytic activity but also promoted antiplatelet effect.

* Superkitamomiji, 2935A, and K83211, other varieties of onion showed only thrombolytic activity.

* More interestingly, quercetin, the richest flavonoid in onion, showed no correlation in the antithrombotic activity.

Based on the results, researchers strongly suggested that onion A. cepa can be classified into varieties with or without antithrombotic and thrombolytic effects.

In other words, only certain varieties of onion process antithrombotic and thrombolytic activity.

Taken altogether, certain onion variety may be as antithrombotic and thrombolytic agents,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Peas (Pisum Sativum), the Potential Treatment of Colitis

By Kyle J. Norton

Colitis is a general term associated with the inflammation of the inner lining of the colon.

The disease can be caused by infection, inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease (CD), ulcerative colitis(CD)), ischemic colitis, allergic reactions, and microscopic colitis.

Most cases of colitis are involved in the damage of the intestinal mucosal barrier, particularly to those of ulcerative colitis.

Epidemiologically, damage and a reduction of gut bacteria by dietary chemicals, such as antibiotics of the protective mucus layer and the underlying tissue by the poorly inactivated digestive proteases have been found to induce both UC and CD.

The intestinal mucosal barrier is the outermost inner layer of the lining of the intestines which plays an essential role to ensure the adequate containment of undesirable luminal contents within the intestine while preserving the ability to absorb nutrients.

Additionally, the intestinal mucosal barrier also processes various immunological mediators, including cytokines and chemokines stimulated by gut microbiota and host immune responses, thus maintaining a well-balanced relationship between gut microbes and the host immune system.

In other words, the intestinal mucosal barrier protects the colonic integrity by interacting with the gut microbiota and the immune response to prevent the inflammation of the colon that causes the onset of colitis.

Some researchers suggested the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades may be one of the most prevalent factors that increase the risk of colitis.

Dr. Max Gulhane, the lead scientist wrote, "Prolonged high-fat diets (HFD) induce low-grade chronic intestinal inflammation in mice, and diets high in saturated fat are a risk factor for the development of human inflammatory bowel diseases".

And, "HFD-induced endoplasmic reticulum (ER)/oxidative stress occur in intestinal secretory goblet cells, triggering inflammatory signaling and reducing synthesis/secretion of proteins that form the protective mucus barrier".

The finding strongly suggested the mucosal barrier dysfunction induces by a high-fat diet involved in the colitis developing.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient which processes anti-inflammatory activity with oxidative stress, researchers investigated the impact of green pea (GP) supplementation on the susceptibility of high-fat diet (HFD) in an animal model.

The study included Six-week-old C57BL/6J female mice randomly assigned into groups fed a 45% HFD or HFD supplemented with 10% GP. After 7-week dietary supplementation, following by colitis induced by adding 2.5% DSS in drinking water for 7 days followed by a 7-day recovery period.

According to the tested analysis, GP supplementation ameliorated the disease activity index score in HFD-fed mice by reducing the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, inflammatory markers associated with inflammatory proteins and enzymes such as interleukin (IL)-6, cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), IL-17, interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) in HFD-fed mice were also decreased by GP supplement.

Goblet cell differentiation markers in HFD-fed mice.associated with mucus secretion and function during the stage of inflammation were also increased by the administration of GP supplementation.

Furthermore, endoplasmic reticulum (er) stress-induced production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in HFD-fed mice was also inhibited by GP supplement.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, "GP supplementation ameliorated the severity of DSS-induced colitis in HFD-fed mice, which was associated with the suppression of inflammation, mucin depletion, and ER stress in the colon".

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of colitis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Ashwagandha Promotes The Healthy Neurons Activity and Brain Functioning

By Kyle J. Norton

The brain formed part of the central nervous system is the most complex organs made up of more than billions of nerve cells or neurons.

The functions of the brain are associated with the communication of trillions of connections called synapses and many specialized regions.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

* The motor neurons transmit information from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Believe or not, there are more than 600 diseases of the central nervous system, including brain tumors, epilepsy, dementia such as Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease and stroke.

The top 3 of neurological diseases include
* Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease in the elderly, associated with the worsening of memory, thinking and behavior that severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life

* Bell's Palsy is a condition caused by sudden weakness or paralysis of facial muscles on one side of the face.

* Cerebral Palsy is a neurological disorder of children affecting a child's movement, motor skills, and muscle tone.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound for the treatment of brain health, researchers examined the effects of Ashwagandha (WA) extracts (alcoholic and water) and their bioactive components for neuroprotective activities against oxidative stress in cultured glioblastoma and neuroblastoma cells.

According to the tested analysis, the extracts and one of the purified components at a low dose protected the glial and neuronal cells from oxidation, an important activity that promotes the neuron activity.

Furthermore, glutamate insult induced by the oxidative stress was also inhibited by the application of Ashwagandha (WA) extracts (alcoholic and water) and their bioactive components.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "the combinations of extracts and active component were highly potent endorsing the therapeutic merit of the combinational approach".

And, "Ashwagandha leaf derived bioactive compounds have neuroprotective potential and may serve as a supplement for brain health.s".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the promotion of brain functioning, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study
