Healthy Food Cucumber's Cucurbitacin B (CuB), the Best Liver Detoxed Remedy Against Alcohol Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Alcohol toxicity is a result of excessive consumption of alcohol that leads to alcohol poisoning.

People with a high level of blood alcohol may experience symptoms of confusion, unresponsive, and disorientation.

If severe cases, patients may loss of conscientiousness or go into a coma.

Long- term excessive alcohol consumption may cause liver damage, leading to the symptoms of jaundice, cirrhosis, liver failure, and liver cancer.
Some people may experience symptoms of alcohol withdrawal symptoms after a day of heavy drinking day. Depending on the body response, some people may experience alcohol withdrawal symptoms as early as two hours after the last drink.

However, most people may experience the symptoms as soon as they wake up after a night of sleep. The symptoms will peak within the first 24 to 48 hours.

Most common alcohol withdrawal symptoms are a rapid heartbeat, changes in blood pressure, sweating, tremors, and fever.

The cucumber plant is a species of Cucumis Sativus, belongings to the family Cucurbitaceae and native to Western Asia. It is a creeping vine with roots in the ground and grows up with the support of frames.

With an aim to find a natural compound which processes anti-alcoholic toxicity, researchers investigated the heat-treated cucumber juice protective effect on blood alcohol levels and hepatic alcohol metabolic enzyme system in experimental rats.

The study included alcoholic toxicity rats orally dosed to 22% alcohol (6ml/kg body weight) along with different concentrations of heat-treated cucumber juice (10, 100 and 500mg/kg) and commercial goods for hangover-removal on sale (2ml/kg).

According to the tested results, after 7h, all concentrations of heat treated cucumber remarkable reduced the blood alcohol levels.

Furthermore, levels of dehydrogenase (ADH) and acetaldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) enzymatic activities associated with a detoxicity in rat liver at 9h after alcohol administration were also increased in the treated rats.

The effect of heat-treated cucumber juice on alcohol detoxification was observed only in the rats treated before 30min from alcohol administration may be involved in stimulated blood alcohol metabolism.

Based on the finding, researchers said, "These findings indicate that heat-treated cucumber juice has a significant protective effect on alcohol detoxification in experimental rats, suggesting its usefulness in the treatment of the liver injury caused by alcohol consumption".

Taken altogether, heat-treated cucumber may be used for the prevention and treatment of alcoholic toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric Suppresses the Formation of Plaque Against the Onset of Atherosclerosis

By Kyle J. Norton

Atherosclerosis is a condition caused by long-term plaques built-up on the wall of the arteries, leading to narrowing the arteries, a major cause of heart disease and stroke.

Plaque is made up of fat, cholesterol, calcium, and other substances found in the blood.

There are some stages of atherosclerosis, depending on the types of atheromatous plaques.

* In the early lesions or type I, foam cells of macrophage are localized to fatty deposits on blood vessel walls.

* Type II of atheromatous plaques are associated with contractile fibrils accumulated on the arterial wall that are not highly ordered and lipid infiltration.

* Type III is the stage caused by connective tissue deposition that is thicker and less cellular than the normal intima, leading to fluid motion characterized by chaotic changes in pressure and flow velocity in the artery.

The above development may take years to develop. Patients with hypertension, diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, and who smoke. are found to accelerate the time of onset.

* Type IV and V are stages that the condition in type III now has become a softer plaque with thinner fibrous cap, containing macrophages and smooth muscle cells.

At stage V, aterial plaques are more volnerble to disruption.

Some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet in the western world may be one of the major culprits that cause widespread atherosclerosis.

Dr. Zhao Y, the lead scientist said, " At 6 months, (high-fat diet fed group) plaque lesions appeared in the abdominal aorta and iliac artery, while at 8 months, they appeared in the coronary artery. At 12 months, atherosclerotic lesions could be found in all major arteries, while lipid core, cholesterol precipitation, and calcium deposition appeared in the most serious sites".

And, "The progression of arterial lesions and distribution of the lesions were highly consistent in the pigs".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

With an aim to find a potential ingredient for the treatment of atherosclerosis, researchers examined the effect of curcumin, a bioactive compound found in turmeric in modulating the expression of proinflammatory M1 and anti-inflammatory M2 macrophages against atherosclerotic plaques.

According to the assays from vitro and in vivo, researchers found that curcumin not only exerts lipid-lowering effects, and also can modulate the function of different macrophage subsets in various macrophage-involved diseases, including atherosclerosis.

In order to reveal more information about curcumin anti the development of atherosclerosis, researchers investigated the effect of a supplement containing Curcuma longa, silymarin, guggul, chlorogenic acid and inulin on NAFLD and atherosclerosis.

The study included C57BL/6 mice fed an HFD for 16 weeks followed by a treatment of a daily oral administration (os) of the NDS on half of the mice.

According to the PCR assay, NDS showed not only exhibited the genes involved in lipid metabolism and anti-inflammatory activity (Cpt2, Ifng) but also inhibited the genes involved in pro-inflammatory response and in free fatty acid uptake (Fabp5, Socs3).

Compared to the untreated group, injection of NDS also displays liver protective activity by significantly lowering hepatic angiotensinogen (AGT) and AT₁R mRNA expression (real-time PCR) and plasma angiotensin (ANG)-II levels (ELISA)plasma levels, the indication of hepatocellular impairment and overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in facilitating onset of M1 macrophages.

Additionally, NDS exerted a similar effect as seen in the aforementioned study by protecting the arteries against plaques accumulation caused by imbalanced levels of M1 and M2 macrophages in populated growing atherosclerotic lesions.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " these results suggest that NDS prevents NAFLD and atherogenesis by modulating the expression of different genes involved in NAFLD and avoiding RAS imbalance".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed a high amount of curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Red Cabbage Processes the Cardio-protective Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardioprotection is a process including the use of substances associated with the preserve of the function and viability of cardiac muscle tissue by the reintroduction of oxygenic blood flow back to the tissues.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a group of conditions caused by the underlying damage of blood vessels and the heart.

More precisely,  CVD can be coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina, myocardial infarction (commonly known as a heart attack) or stroke, depending on the location of the blockage or disruption,

According to the statistics provided by the American Heart Association, approximately 84 million people in this US living with some form of cardiovascular disease. The condition has also been found to cause the death of about 2,200 people a day.

The exact causes of CVD are not identified. however, the most prevalent factors that cause CVD are aging, family history, unhealthy diet, lack of exercise, being overweight and smoking.

Believe it or not, most patients who suffered from CVD are also associated with atherosclerosis, a condition caused by long-term plaque build-up on artery walls, that lead to narrow the arteries and reduce blood flow through your arteries to the heart.

Metabolic factors including hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are the most common syndromes that have been found to promote CVD.

Where hyperglycemia, hyperlipidemia, and hyperkalemia are conditions of abnormally high levels of sugar, cholesterol and potassium level in the bloodstream, respectively.

Dr. Gumbiner B, the lead scientist wrote, "Risk factors for cardiovascular disease (CVD) appear to cluster in individuals, possibly because of a single, underlying metabolic disorder".

And, " Abnormal metabolic risk factors were defined as (1) an abnormal glucose value (fasting blood sugar greater than 115 mg/dl); (2) abnormal lipids (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol under 35 mg/dl in men or under 45 mg/dl in women; or low-density lipoproteins of 160 or greater; or triglycerides greater than 250 mg/dl), and (3) hypertension (blood pressure systolic above 160 mmHg; or diastolic above 90 mmHg)".

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem with a crowded mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of cardiovascular disease, researchers examined the effects of Brassica vegetables such as red cabbage on the alleviation in experimentally induced myocardial infarction.

H2O2 induced rat neonatal cardiomyoblasts (H9c2 cells) treatment associated with cytotoxicity (48-50%) and apoptosis (57.3%), were reduced by the application of anthocyanin-rich red cabbage extract (ARCE).

Furthermore, in isoproterenol (ISO) induced rodent model of myocardial infarction, pretreated ARCE for 30 days recorded a significant increase of heart body weight ratio as compared to the ISO-treated group.

ARCE pretreatment also prevents the effect of ISO on the induction of the depletion of enzymatic antioxidants and apoptosis.

Moreover, ISO-induced infracted areas (10%) and derangement of the myocardium was also inhibited by the pretreatment of ARCE.

Additionally, ISO-induced heart cells membrane damage and heart calcium imbalance were also attenuated by the pretreatment of ARCE.

In other words, ARCE protected heart integrity against the isoproterenol (ISO) induced damage to the heart muscle.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Overall this study elucidates the mechanism of ARCE mediated prevention of experimentally induced myocardial damage".

Taken altogether, red cabbage may process cardioprotective activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Brocoli Inhibits the Symptoms of Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Type I diabetes is also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes associated with not enough or no insulin produced by the pancreas due to the die-off or gradual die-off the insulin-producing beta cells

The exact causes of type I diabetes are not identified. However,  the condition is a result of the body's own immune system mistakenly that destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

Type II diabetes is a chronic acquired medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas die-off or receptor sites clog-up by fat and cholesterol.

In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

The exact cause of type II diabetes is also unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the condition is most likely caused by genetic mutation and an unhealthy lifestyle.

Untreated and unmanageable type I and II diabetes may induce complications of cardiovascular disease, nerve damage (neuropathy), kidney damage (nephropathy), eye damage (retinopathy). foot damage and skin conditions.

Medication used for the treatment of diabetes is focused on alleviating the symptoms and improving quality of life, particularly, in type II diabetes in slowing down the progression of the disease.

Dr. Waqas Sami, the lead author in the study "Effect of diet on type 2 diabetes mellitus: A review" wrote. "Dietary habits and sedentary lifestyle are the major factors for the rapidly rising incidence of DM among developing countries. In type 2 diabetics, recently, the elevated HbA1c level has also been considered as one of the leading risk factors for developing microvascular and macrovascular complications".

 And, "Improvement in the elevated HbA1c level can be achieved through diet management; thus, the patients could be prevented from developing diabetes complications. Awareness about diabetes complications and consequent improvement in dietary knowledge, attitude, and practices lead to better control of the disease".

These results suggested changes in diet and lifestyle are the most effective method in the management of type II diabetes.

Other risk factors associated with the early onset of type II diabetes include overweight or obese, age 45 or older, family history, ethnicity, Alaska Native, high blood pressure and cholesterol and women with polycystic ovary syndrome

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower head surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

With an aim to find a potential wholefood for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the effect of broccoli on type 2 diabetes.

The study included SD rats induced type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) by a high-fat diet and injecting a low dose (35 mg/kg) of streptozocin were pretreated by treated broccoli extracts at a dose of 200, 400 and 800 mg/kg body weight for 28 days.

According to the tested assays at the 28-day, broccoli extracts showed an improvement in body weight, water, and food intake compared to diabetic control rats.

Compared to the doses viz., 200, 400, 800 mg/kg body weight demonstrated a significant attenuation in the blood glucose at 180 min in Streptozotocin (STZ) induced diabetic rats, also compared to control.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, "The study demonstrated that ethanolic extract of Brassica oleracea extract has potential antidiabetic activities. Thus Brassica oleracea as a vegetable or its extract can be useful to control hyperglycemia".

Taken altogether, broccoli may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of type 2 diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Turmeric Suppresses the Initiation, Progression, and Proliferation of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML)

By Kyle J. Norton

Leukemia is a condition characterized by an abnormal increase of white blood cells produced by the bone marrow and/or the lymphatic system. Depending to the malignant granulocytes or lymphocytes, leukemia is classified into myelogenous or lymphoblastic leukemia.

Bone marrow is soft tissue inside the hollow center of the major bone. including spine, pelvis, underarm, leg. etc.

Acute leukemia is a condition caused by a rapid increase in the numbers of extreme immature white blood cells which appear in the bloodstream in the other parts of the body, including tissue and organs, Acute leukemia can also be classified into
* Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL)
Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL) is a type of cancer of the abnormal growth of extreme immature lymphocytes overproduced by the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system. The condition has a tendency to multiply quickly, leading to the death to normal white blood cells in the bone marrow and/or lymphatic system.

In ALL, lymphocytes appear immature in the bloodstream. Acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) is the most common children forms of leukemia with about 80% of all cases.

* Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) is a cancer of myelogenous lining caused by the rapid growth of abnormal granulocytes accumulated in the bone marrow, interfering with the normal blood cells. In AML, granulocytes appear immature in the bloodstream.

Most common risk factors associated with the risk of AML are
*  Age
Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) occurs mostly in adults with increased risk with age.

* Gender
Men have an increased risk of Acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) than that of women.

* Radiation
Children with a previous high dose of radiotherapy and chemotherapy have an increased risk of acute lymphoblastic leukemia.

* Exposure to environment chemicals
Exposure to certain chemicals can increase the risk of the disease.

* Previous cancer treatment.
Previous cancer treatment of chemotherapy and radiation therapy increase the risk of AML.

* Smoking
AML is linked to cigarette smoke, as a result of cigarette carcinogens.

* Genetic disorders
Certain inherited genetic disorders, such as Down syndrome, Fanconi anemia, IgA deficiency, etc. increase the risk of the disease.

According to the statistic proved by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately 21,450 new cases of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) will be diagnosed in adults. The disease also causes the
of 10,920 deaths of American adults.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural compound for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia cancer, researchers examined the curcumin, a bioactive compound from turmeric, eliminated cancer stem cells (CSCs) in some cancers.

On acute myeloid leukemia cells treated with increasing concentrations of curcumin showed a significant decrease in the markers associated with CSCs.

ALDH activity as a common marker that mediates the metastasis is also inhibited by the injection of curcumin through a decrease in the percentage of ALDH-positive cells.

Colony formation associated with cancer cell proliferation and progression was also suppressed by the activity of curcumin.

Proteins involved in uncontrolled cellular proliferation and oncogene in several other cancers and promotion of cellular division were also inhibited by the administration of the phytochemical.

In other words, curcumin suppression the initiation, progression, and proliferation of acute myeloid leukemia through several mechanisms, including cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, and anti-proliferation.

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of acute myeloid leukemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Alliin Kills Colorectal Cancer Cells In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Colorectal cancer is a chronic and medical condition caused by irregular cell growth in the colon or rectum.

Most cases of colorectal cancer start in the alternation of cell DNA on the surface of the inner lining of the colon or rectum before penetrating deeper into the organs.

Rectal cancer is a slowest growing cancer. Therefore, most cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed at the advanced stage in the older population.

According to the statistic provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, Colorectal cancer is the 2nd most commonly diagnosed cancer in Canada, besides non-melanoma skin cancer.

In 2017,  over 26,000 Canadians were diagnosed with colorectal cancer representing 13% of all new cancer cases. Colorectal cancer also causes the death of over 9,000 Canadian, accounting for 12% of all cancer deaths.

In general, the 5-year survival rate for people with colorectal cancer is 65%. However, the 5-year survival rate of localized colorectal cancer is about 90%.

Although there are a number of risk factors associated with the onset of colorectal cancer, some researchers suggested the increased obesity in the general population induced colorectal cancer over the past few decades may have a strong implication by the promotion of Western diet.

Dr. Aleksandrova K wrote, "Current research indicates that there is a moderate but consistently reported association between general obesity (as determined by BMI) and colorectal cancer incidence and mortality".

And, "The relative risk associated with obesity is higher for cancer of the colon than for cancer of the rectum and it is higher in men than in women. By contrast, abdominal adiposity (as determined by waist circumference or waist-to-hip ratio) is similarly strongly associated with colon cancer in men and women, suggesting that abdominal adiposity is a more important risk factor for colon cancer than general adiposity, at least in women".

Alliin (S-allyl-L-cysteine-S-oxide) is a phytochemical compound sulfoxide,. a derivative of the amino acid cysteine, belonging to the class of sulfur compounds, found abundantly in fresh garlic and onion.

With an aim to find potential and natural ingredients for the treatment of colorectal cancer, one among the most common cancers in the world and a major cause of cancer-related deaths, researchers examined the s-allyl-l-cysteine-sulfoxide (SACS)/alliin against overexpression of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR).

The organosulfur compounds showed an interaction ability in the active region of the EGFR gene, according to silico molecular docking studies and in vitro validation, leading to the inhibition of EGFR gene in facilitating the cancer cell growth and proliferation.

In other words,  s-allyl-l-cysteine-sulfoxide (SACS)/alliin prevented overexpression of the EGFR gene in the promotion of tumor initiation.

According to the results from the epidemiological studies in China, in the investigated a garlic powder preparation, a garlic extract (reported as 8-10% L(+)-alliin enriched), and a combination anticancer activity.
* Garlic powder failed to inhibit the growth of human colorectal carcinoma Caco2 cells at concentrations of up to 1000 micrograms/ml.

* Garlic extract, in which the alliin content was highly enriched was also unable to inhibit the growth of these cells.

* However, the garlic extract supplemented with garlic powder (to 10% final concentration) in a concentration-dependent clearly inhibited tumor cell growth with IC50 values of 480 micrograms/ml in the Caco-2 cells.

Additional analysis of the aforementioned results, researchers found that the efficacy of in the inhibition of colorectal cancer cell was attributed to the breakdown products of alliin, such as allicin or polysulfides, rather than alliin itself.

These results confirmed by examining the addition of an alliinase system (garlic powder) to an alliin enriched preparation without alliinase (garlic extract)  potentiated the effects.

Taken altogether, alliin used alone or combined with other herbal medicines may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of colorectal cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of alliin in the form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane Protects the Integrity of Liver Against Chronic Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

Chronic liver diseases are the medical condition that causes the reduce function of the liver. In a serious case, chronic liver disease can lead to liver failure.

In other words, chronic liver diseases are liver diseases that last more than 6 months, including liver viral inflammation, liver cirrhosis, and hepatocellular carcinoma.

The liver is a large organ in the human body that filters out the blood which comes from the intestines before passing them to other parts of the body.

The largest organ also produces cholesterol to aid digestion, build a strong cell wall and produce steroids hormones and vitamin D.

According to the statistics provided by the UK, liver diseases are ranked as the fifth most common cause of death in the UK and have a steady tendency to increase over the years.

In the US, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is the most common liver diseases which affect over 100 100 million Americans.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease is a medical condition caused fat accumulated in the liver over time probably due to poor diet and physical inactivity. The disease is one of the major cause of cirrhosis associated with liver cancer and liver failure.

Most common symptoms of chronic liver disease include loss of appetite, jaundice, persistent itching, fluid buildup in the belly, vomiting blood caused by the bleeding of often from bleeding in the esophagus.

3,3'-Diindolylmethane or DIM are phytochemicals derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol, belonging to the group of Indoles, found abundantly in broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, and kale, etc.

With an aim to discover a potential ingredient which process liver protective effect, researchers investigated the effect of indoles, including indole-3-carbinol (I3C) and its derivatives I3C polymerizes into 3, 3- diindolylmethane (DIM) on chronic liver disease.

In vivo and vitro, indoles showed to regulate transcriptional factors and their respective signaling pathways associated with the production of proteins involved in the pro-inflammatory expression.

Furthermore, indoles also promoted the production of antioxidant enzymes against overexpression of levels of free radicals induced oxidative stress.

Moreover, administration of indoles in vivo and vitro also inhibited microRNA to influence the activation, proliferation, and apoptosis of target liver cells.

In other words, indoles protect the liver integrity by modulating the enzymes involved in hepatitis viral replication, lipogenesis, and the metabolism of ethanol and some hepatotoxicity.

Additonally, the bioactive compound was also found to process immunomodulatory biofunction in improving non-alcoholic steatohepatitis.

Overall, the indole liver protective effects were attributed to its function as anti-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines to reduce microbial-induced liver injuries inhibitors.

Dr. Wang SQ, the lead scientist said, "Indoles, especially I3C and DIM as phytochemicals, exert anti-fibrosis, anti-tumor, anti-oxidant, immunomodulatory, detoxification and anti-inflammation effects on hepatic protection through pleiotropic mechanism".

Taken altogether, indoles, including 3,3'-Diindolylmethane derived from the digestion of indole-3-carbinol may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of chronic liver disease pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of 3,3'-diindolylmethane in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
