Chinese Celery, A Potential Herbal Medicine for Dementia

Celery may have a potential effect in the protection of neuron integrity against the onset of dementia, scientists found.

Dementia is a group of diseases associated with the decline in memory or thinking skills severe enough to affect a person's ability to perform everyday activities and quality of life.

According to the statistic provided by the UK Alzheimer's Association, 1 in 3 people born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. 

Today, dementia affects over 850,000 people in the UK and this number will increase to over one million by 2025 and over two million by 2050.  Alzheimer's disease accounts for 60 to 80 percent of all cases.

There are many types of dementia, depending on the specific regions damaged which are responsible for differentiation of the functions (for example, memory, judgment, and movement) in the brain. Dementia patients may experience different types of symptoms as cells in that particular region can no longer carry out its functions normally.

Alzheimer's disease
Alzheimer's disease is a brain disorder named for German physician Alois Alzheimer. Alzheimer's destroys brain cells, causing problems with memory, thinking, and behavior severe enough to affect language communication, memory, lifelong hobbies or social life. Alzheimer's gets worse over time, and it is fatal.

Absence of acetylcholine
Diminished quality of acetylcholine may result in cognitive dysfunction, causing language difficulty, memory loss, concentration problem, and reduced mobile skills because of lacking reaction in muscular activity and refection.

Multi-infarct dementia
Also known as vascular dementia, is the second most common form of dementia after Alzheimer's disease in older adults, caused by different mechanisms involved all vascular lesions in the brain.

Parkinson's disease
Parkinson disease (PD) is a disabling, progressive condition, caused by the interruption of frontal-subcortical loops that facilitate cognition and parallel the motor loop due to loss of substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) dopamine (DA) neurons.

Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease
Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a quickly progressing and fatal disease that consists of dementia, muscle abnormal functions.

There are many risk factors associated with the prevalence of dementia. In the Western World, some researchers suggested that the widespread of dementia over the last many decades was probably attributed to the promotion of a poor diet.

Dr. P.J. Smith, the lead scientist in the examine the risk of cognitive decline associated with a poor diet said, " It has been recognized that lifestyle factors including dietary patterns, may be important in the prevention of cognitive decline and dementia in later life".

These results clearly suggested that people who follow the poor diet pattern are at substantial risk to develop dementia when they get older.

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae. The plant is cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

With an aim to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of dementia with no side effect, researchers at The Chinese University of Hong Kong looked into the 3-n-Butylphthalide (NBP), a compound extracted from Chinese celery used as an anti-hypertensive herbal medicine for treating stroke patients.

In vitro and in vivo, 3-n-Butylphthalide (NBP) enhanced cell survival regardless of whether they are added before, simultaneously with or after the addition of H(2)O(2).

In spontaneously hypertensive rats and Wistar Kyoto control rats with chronic cerebral ischemia, application of NBP showed a significantly improved the performance in the place navigation test and spatial probe test, compared to the untreated animals.

Additionally, in the chick's embryonic chorioallantoic membrane researchers found that NBP, enhances the development of new blood vessel to the affected area accompanied by increased expression of growth factors, VEGF, VEGF-receptor and bFGF, potent angiogenic inducers.

Dr. Zhang L, the lead author said, "one of the mechanisms of DL-NBP might be ameliorating vascular dementia and promoting angiogenesis".

In Alzheimer's disease (AD), application of L-3-n-butylphthalide (NBP), an extract from seeds of Apium graveolens Linn (Chinese celery), showed a strong neuroprotective effect on ischemic, vascular dementia, and amyloid-beta (Abeta)-infused animal models.

In a triple-transgenic AD mouse model (3xTg-AD) that develops both plaques and tangles with aging, and cognitive deficits, 15 mg/kg L-NBP by oral gavage for 18 weeks significantly improved learning deficits, and long-term spatial memory, compared to control.

NBP treatment significantly reduced total cerebral Abeta plaque deposition and lowered Abeta levels in brain homogenates probably through enhancing the soluble amyloid precursor protein secretion (alphaAPPs), alpha-secretase.

More importantly, L-NBP treatment in 3xTg-AD mice also reduced glial activation in the induction of pathological pain and oxidative stress compared to control.

The findings indicated NBP can be a promising preclinical potential of a multitarget drug for the prevention and/or treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Taken altogether, Chinese celery processed a major compound 3-n-Butylphthalide (NBP) may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of dementia, particularly in the AD with no side effects.

Herbal Butterbur, the Natural Anti High Blood Cholesterol Remedy, Scientists Say

Herbal Butterbur may have a potential and positive effect on reducing the levels of blood cholesterol with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance needed for our body to build cell walls, make hormones and vitamin D, and create bile salts that help you digest fat.

However, too much cholesterol can be dangerous because cholesterol cannot dissolve in your blood.

The special particle called lipoprotein moves this waxy, soft substance from place to place, leading to cholesterol accumulation in the arterial wall that disrupt the risk oxygenic blood transportation to the heart, a major cause of cardiovascular disease.

There are 2 types of cholesterol. The high-density lipoprotein which returns the blood cholesterol to the liver for future use and the low-density lipoprotein which processes a number of aforementioned functions.

The healthy ratio that maximizes the body functions is 4 (low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol) to 1 (high-density lipoprotein or good cholesterol. Any numbers less than 4 are considered healthy.

Some researchers suggested although there are many risk factors associated with the onset of high blood cholesterol, an unhealthy diet is one major and accumulated risk of the syndrome.

Dr. Robert L. Rosenthal in the study "Effectiveness of altering serum cholesterol levels without drugs" wrote, "Drug therapy with statins and other agents can result in dramatic lipid-lowering effects. Despite the wealth of data supporting the beneficial effects of pharmacologic therapy on cardiovascular risk, patients often express a desire to accomplish similar goals with diet alone".

And, "... a variety of dietary strategies designed to lower lipid levels, including the American Heart Association diet, the Ornish diet, the Mediterranean diet, exercise, phytosterols, fiber, soy products, and fish oil".

These results strongly suggested you can lower your blood cholesterol by following a healthy diet and moderate exercise without using drugs.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riverside, forest, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herbal medicine has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including stomach, bile ducts,, and duodenum, etc.

The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin, and iso-S-petasin, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers at the Chungnam National University, Gyeongsan examined the effect of the butanol fraction from the methanol extract of butterbur (Petasites japonicus Max.) (BMP) on the plasma lipid profile and oxidative damage of liver in mice challenged with monosodium l-glutamate (MSG).

The study included ICR mice (6-8 weeks old, male) fed with BMP (0.1% or 0.3%) for 1 week, and on day 7,  MSG (4 mg/g) administered intraperitoneally.

Before application of BMP, administration of MSG showed a significant decrease of antioxidant biomarkers such as total glutathione level and antioxidant enzyme activities such as glutathione reductase (GR), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), glutathione S-transferase (GST), and quinone reductase (NQO1) and increase of the levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS).

After the injection of BMP supplementation, treated mice markedly enhanced the hepatic antioxidant enzyme activities.

Furthermore, BMP supplementation decreased total cholesterol, atherogenic index, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol, compared to the MSG-treated group.

Dr. Park CH the lead author in the hear team wrote, "Based on these results, it was proposed that BMP improve the plasma lipid profiles and decrease the oxidative stress by up-regulating the hepatic antioxidant enzymes in mice challenged with MSG.".

Additonally, the review of the anti-obesity effect of an extract of Petasites japonicus (a culinary vegetable from Eastern Asia) (PJET) on a murine adipocyte cell line (3T3-L1) and on diet-induced obesity-prone mice, researchers showed PJET lowered the body weight gain and visceral fat tissue accumulation and ameliorated the plasma cholesterol concentration. 

Furthermore, PJET significantly attenuated three adipogenic transcription factors, which play a crucial Role in adipogenic induction associated with adipocyte differentiation and cholesterol homeostasis and genes involved higher levels of total cholesterol.

These results indicated herbal  Butterbur inhibited levels of bad cholesterol through many mechanisms, including genes expression, transcription factors, and levels of antioxidants

Taken altogether, herbal Butterbur processed a number of bioactive compounds may be considered a function remedy for the prevention and treatment of high blood cholesterol with no side effect, pending to the large sample size and multi-center human study.

Honey, the Natural Remedy for Influenza with No Side Effects

Scientists may have found a natural alternative for the treatment of Influenza, according to studies.
Influenza, also known as the flu, is an infectious disease caused by an influenza virus.

Most common symptoms include high fever, runny nose, sore throat, muscle pains, headache, coughing, sneezing. A healthy individual may recover from influenza without medication in a few days with the symptoms that may last for a week.

However, people with the weakened immune system may have a problem to recover themselves without the assistance of medication. In severe cases, influenza can induce complications of pneumonia, ear, and sinus infection and death.

People with medical conditions such as heart, lung, kidney, liver disease, AIDs, severe anemia are at a higher risk of the onset of influenza, particularly in the elderly with the weakened immune system.

Children and adolescents who are receiving long-term aspirin therapy are at risk to be infected by the virus.

Furthermore, some researchers suggested that obese individual also are more likely to be infected by influenza, compared to non-obese individuals.

Dr. J Justin Milner, the lead scientists in examining the obesity and influenza infection severity said, "Obesity also increases susceptibility to bacterial and viral infections [2]. In 2009, the CDC identified obesity as a risk factor for hospitalization and death from pandemic H1N1 influenza virus infection".

And, "An association between obesity and severe influenza outcomes, including seasonal influenza, has since been corroborated in other epidemiological studies".

The finding strongly indicated the risk of influenza in obesity.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural whole food for the treatment of influenza, researchers examined the anti-influenza viral activity of honey from various sources.

Antiviral activities of honey samples were evaluated in MDCK cells. Injection of Manuka honey efficiently inhibited influenza virus replication (IC50 5 3.6 1.2 mg/mL; CC50 5 82.3 2.2 mg/mL; selective index 5 22.9).

Furthermore,. In the presence of 3.13 mg/mL manuka honey, the IC50 of zanamivir or oseltamivir was reduced to nearly 1/1000th of their single use.

The finding clearly suggested that Manuka honey processes a strong anti-influenza activity when used alone or by promoting the function of conventional medicine when used combinationally.

Some researchers suggested that manuka also inhibited the symptoms of influenza such as blocked sinuses, sore throat and coughs through its major compound Methylglyoxal (MGO).

Moreover, Manuka honey also inhibited the production of proinflammatory cytokines during the acute phase of influenza, thus providing the instant relief fa or a sore throat and cough.


In the immune perspective, Manuka honey also increased the expression of serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) which plays a critical role against the onset of infection by microorganisms.

Dr. Ogi M, the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "The relative risk for bacterial infection among patients with serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) levels below 600 mg/dL was 6.74 compared with that for patients with serum IgG levels over 600 mg/dL (95% confidence interval, 1.22 to 36.32; P = 0.029)"

And "In patients with serum creatinine levels over 2.0 mg/dL, the relative risk of bacterial infection was 5.31 compared with patients with serum creatinine levels below 2.0 mg/dL (95% confidence interval, 1.08 to 26.09; P = 0.040)". 

The finding also suggested that Manuka honey also can modulate the immune expression to prevent the infection caused by the influenza virus by increased production of immunoglobulin G.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that Manuka honey can be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of influenza, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Scientists may have a pungent spice which processes a potential for the promotion of healthy longevity, according to the study.

Compared to life expectancy which the average number of years remaining of a given age or living of a certain group's people, longevity is a long life out of the boundary of the life expectancy.
Truly, we all dream to live healthy longevity. However how many of us can maintain health and prevent the onset of chronic disease?

Some researchers suggested that by following a healthy lifestyle and moderate exercise healthy longevity can be achieved.

Dr. Mehta N in the study of the healthy lifestyle impact of life expectancy wrote, "Compared to the whole US population, those with such a favorable behavioral profile had a life expectancy at age fifty that was seven years longer, and they experienced a delay in the onset of disability of up to six years".

The results clearly suggested the massively damaging effects caused by unhealthy behavioral risks on health at older ages.

Furthermore, Dr. Vincent Gremeaux and colleagues on the differentiation of exercise and longevity said, "As the number of older individuals continues to increase, it is important to develop interventions that can be easily implemented and contribute to “successful aging”".

And, " In addition to a healthy diet and psychosocial well-being, the benefits of regular exercise on mortality, and the prevention and control of chronic disease affecting both life expectancy and quality of life are well established".

Regularly moderate exercise has been found to have partially reverse effects on the aging process on physiological functions and preserve functional capability in the elderly.  

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that healthy longevity can be achieved by maintaining a minimum quantity and quality of exercise,  preventing the development of certain cancers, lowering the risk of osteoporosis.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding a bioactive compound for the healthy longevity examined the shell ginger (Alpinia zerumbet (Pers.) B.L. Burtt & R.M. Sm) of the ginger family (Zingiberaceae) activity in the population in the Okinawa Islands of Japan.

According to the review of the literature, culinary shell ginger may contribute to longevity among the population in Okinawa probably due to the procession of phytochemical content with antioxidant and its effects on anti-obesity properties.

Some researchers suggested that the longevity of the population may also be attributed to the shell ginger in the promotion of health in the reduced diseases by exhibiting anti-inflammatory, fungistatic, and antibacterial activities against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, and Bacillus cereus activity.

Shell ginger also is proven to have a positive effect neuraminidase enzyme and inhibition of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV-1).

Dr. Rolf Teschke in the  examination of the mortality rate of Japan general public compared to the population on the island wrote, "cardiovascular disease as the top cause of death for both sexes, and neoplasms as the second leading cause of death in Japan nationally, with major variations among the prefectures"

And, " Comparing Japan overall with Okinawa, the mean mortality rates from ischaemic heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and oesophageal cancer were not remarkably different. However, for Okinawa, four death categories were significantly lower, including ischaemic stroke, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, and liver cancer due to hepatitis C.

The finding clearly suggested that intake of shell ginger which was not found in other areas in Japan may contribute to the healthy longevity to the population in the Okinawa Islands of Japan.

In the joint study led by the Woosuk University, the Korean scientists evaluated the compound 6-gingerol longevity-promoting activity.isolated from the most active ethyl acetate soluble fraction on Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans).

Injection od 6 gingerol elevated the survival rate of worms against stressful environment including thermal, osmotic, and oxidative conditions.

The bioactive compound elevated the antioxidant enzyme activities of C. elegans and showed a dose-depend reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in worms.

Furthermore, 6 gingerols also demonstrated increased stress tolerance, leading to the promotion of stress resistance proteins.

The findings strongly suggest that 6-gingerol exerted longevity-promoting activities independently of these factors and could extend the human lifespan.

Taken altogether, ginger and shell ginger may be considered functional foods for the promotion of healthy longevity with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Psychological stress is the expression of emotion and physiology when the events happened to an individual going beyond his/her coping ability.

However, the coping resources for coping with the stress of each individual are quite different. Some can cope better than others when dealing with the same unfortunate events.

Psychologic stress was found to induce physiologic responses, leading to physical symptoms and disease. In some cases, the impacts of psychologic stress can result in the worsening of individuals' medical conditions.

According to the epidemiological studies, chronic psychological stress can cause symptoms anxiety and nervousness, panic attacks, physical sensations of anxiety, tendencies to predict the worst, conflict avoidance, muscle tension, tremors, headaches, low/excessive motivation.

Some of these stress responses can lead to endocrine disorders like Graves’ disease, gonadal dysfunction, psychosexual dwarfism, and obesity. Stress can also alter the clinical status of many preexisting endocrine disorders such as precipitation of adrenal crisis and thyroid storm".

These results suggested clearly that people under long-term stress are susceptible to the onset of abnormal hormone-related diseases and syndrome.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on finding natural ingredients for the improvement of fat and glucose metabolism examined the effects of individual spice including ginger physiological responses to high-fat meals.

These results strongly suggested that a meal containing a high antioxidant spice blend attenuated postprandial lipemia by 30% compared to a low spice meal through the influence of acute psychological stress on fat metabolism.

The a 2 x 2, randomized, 4-period crossover design  in 20 healthy but overweight adults, researchers compared the effects of 14.5 g spices (black pepper, cinnamon, cloves, garlic, ginger, oregano, paprika, rosemary, and turmeric) vs. placebo incorporated into a high fat meal (1000 kcal, 45 g fat), followed by psychological stress (Trier Social Stress Test) vs. rest on postprandial metabolism.

According to the blood sample collected at baseline and at 105, 140, 180, and 210 minutes for analysis of triglycerides, glucose, and insulin, the levels of serum triglycerides, glucose and insulin were elevated following the meal.

Application of spices, including ginger reduced post-meal triglycerides by 31% followed by the rest condition (p = 0.048), however, this effect was not presented during stress.

Furthermore, the significant increase of acute stress of the tested subjects also had a strong impact to negate the activity of spice on levels of glucose or insulin.

Moreover, The spice blend and several of the individual spices dose-dependently inhibited PL and PLA2activity in vitro.

Where Phospholipase (PL) and Phospholipase A2 (PLA) are associated with the development of stress and inflammation.

Dr. the lead scientist after taking into account co and confounders said, "spices may attenuate postprandial lipemia via inhibition of PL and PLA2. However, the impact of psychological stress negates any influence of the spice blend on triglycerides, and further, increases blood glucose and insulin".

The finding strongly suggested ginger showed no effects in inhibiting triglycerides and modulating the levels of glucose and insulin in people who are under constant psychological stress.

Interestingly, in order to reveal more information about ginger against psychological stress, researchers evaluated the activity 6-gingerol on C. elegans.

The bioactive compound 6-gingerol was isolated from the most active ethyl acetate soluble fraction of ginger and showed an elevated survival rate of worms against stressful environment including thermal, osmotic, and oxidative conditions.

The results were attributed to the 6-gingerol activity in the elevated the antioxidant enzyme activities of C. elegans, in the reduction of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) accumulation in worms in a dose-dependent manner.

More importantly, the injection of 6-gingerol demonstrated that the increased stress tolerance of 6-gingerol-mediated worms could result from the promotion of stress resistance proteins such as heat shock protein (HSP-16.2) and superoxide dismutase (SOD-3). 

Taken all together, ginger exerted significant antioxidative stress through its bioactive compound compared to no effects in modulating the triglycerides, blood glucose, and insulin if a person is under acute psychological stress.

Ginger, the Natural Antibiotics Alternative Functional Spice

Ginger may be considered a natural antibiotics alternative for the treatment of Candida albicans overgrowth without inducing any side effects, some scientists suggested.

Candida albicans is an opportunistic pathogenic yeast formed part of the commensal gastrointestinal mycobiota.

Candida albicans overgrowth is the most prevalent cause of fungal infections in human.

Epidemiological studies strongly suggested that long-term users of antibiotics that cause an imbalance of the gut microbiome, weakened the immune system, unhealthy diet, and women who are pregnant and hormone imbalance of hormone near menstruation are susceptible to the onset of the condition.

And, "Both inflammatory bowel disease and gastrointestinal Candida colonization are associated with elevated levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-17. Therefore, effects on IL-17 levels may underlie the ability of Candida colonization to enhance inflammation".

These results strongly suggested, inflammation flames the overgrowth of Candida colonization in return, the overgrowth of Candida albicans induces persistently low-grade inflammation.

With an aim to find the natural ingredient or whole food for the replacement of the conventional antibiotics without inducing any effects, researchers at the Teikyo University Institute of Medical Mycology, investigated the effect of ginger against infection caused by Candida albicans.

 4 preparations of the essential oils of young and mature rhizomes, air-dried and steamed rhizomes, and seed rhizomes of Zingiber officinale Roscoe (ginger) were compared in the study.

* All ginger essential oils processed a significant anti-Candida albicans activity.

* Essential oil from the seed and air-dried rhizomes, exerted the highest effect compared to other preparations.

* The seed and air-dried rhizomes essential oils also had a potent inhibitory activity compared to ginger oleoresins obtained by ethanol and hypercritical carbon dioxide extraction and essential oils of 5 other plants in the family Zingiberaceae.

According to the chemical constituents assay, [6]-shogaol was most active against filament formation and growth of C. albicans, followed by citral and [6]-gingerol.

Futhermore, ginger oleoresin, especially that obtained by ethanol extraction, with a high [6]-gingerol content exhibited potent anti the growth of C. albicans compared to essential oils of ginger and other Zingiberaceae plants.

Moreover, a vitro joint study by the Institute of Science and Technology, researchers launched an investigation to evaluate the antimicrobial activity of 2% chlorhexidine gel (CHX) isolated from the ginger as auxiliary chemical substance and intracanal medications on Candida albicans.

The study included 48 single-rooted human teeth randomly divided into fourr groups (n = 12), according to intracanal medications used: (1) Calcium hydroxide + apyrogenic saline solution (Ca(OH)2 + SS), (2) 20% ginger glycolic extract (GEN), (3) calcium hydroxide + 20% ginger glycolic extract (Ca(OH)2 + GEN), (4) apyrogenic SS (control). 

At the end of the experiment, researchers found that
* CHX was effective in the complete elimination of E. coli and C. albicans.

* ChX also significantly reduced and then completely eliminated E. faecalis after intracanal medication.

* All other applications also revealed a reduction of endotoxins, the outer membrane of the cell wall of Gram-negative bacteria.

In the final report, the research team concluded, "CHX and intracanal medication used were able to eliminate the microorganisms from the root canal; the endotoxins were reduced, yet not completely eliminated".

These result strongly suggested that ginger bioactive compound processes a significant antibacterial activity, particularly in those of C. albicans.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of yeast infection with no side effects.

Papaya, the Potential Functional Food for the Treatment of Anemia

Scientists may have found a whole fruit for the treatment of anemia with no side effects, according to studies.

Anemia is a medical condition associated with a lack of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin in the blood.

Iron deficiency anemia is one of most common anemia, caused by poor iron levels in the blood, leading to the reduced delivery of oxygen throughout your body.

There are many risk factors involved the onset of the condition. Blood loss, such as from heavy menstrual bleeding, an ulcer, cancer and regular use of some over-the-counter pain relievers, especially aspirin are some of the most common prevalent risk factors.

People with a long-term deficiency of folate and vitamin B-12 which play a critical role in the production of healthy red blood cells are also at an increased risk of Amenia.

Also, people with the mutated gene inherited from the parent are at substantial risk of the disease. the Duliajan College study suggested that certain gene such as βE-Globin Gene is associated with the onset of anemia.

Dr. SK Sharma, the lead scientists in examine the anemia in India population surprisingly found that there is a high prevalence of anemia among children (78.9%), ever-married women (56.2%), pregnant women (57.9%) and ever-married men (24.3%) in India.

The doctor continued after observing the levels of hemoglobin in the tested subjects, Association of the lower level of hemoglobin,...., was observed in subjects carrying the βE-globin gene. The mean (± SD) hemoglobin levels of the subject with heterozygous and homozygous state of HbE was 10.9 ± 0.95 and 9.7 ± 0.64 g/dL, respectively, against 11.28 ± 1.42 g/dL observed in normal hemoglobin pattern (Hb AA)".

These results clearly stated that amenia may be a genetic preposition related disease that can be reversed in some people.

Papaya is a species of Carica Papaya, belonging to the family Caricaceae and native to the tropics of the Americas, and was first cultivated in Mexico and several centuries.


With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of anemia, with no side effect, researchers at the Covenant University, examined the papaya anti-anemia effect in subjects with sickle cell disease (SCD)

Sickle cell disease (SCD)is a genetic disease caused by an individual inheriting an allele for sickle cell hemoglobin from both parents. The disease is associated with unusual production of a large number of immature blood cells.

Application of Carica papaya seed oil (Cari-oil) showed significant effects in reducing the levels of sickle blood cells compared with that of untreated SCD patients.

RBCs in Cari-oil treated samples were significantly higher (P < 0.05) compared with VerMyg, antisickling plant-treated samples.

The Cari-oil extract significantly reduced (P < 0.05) lactate dehydrogenase activity,  in both in male (HbSSM) and female (HbSSF) human sickle cell blood.

Lactate dehydrogenase activity, LDH consistently increased in patients with anemia.

Furthermore, Cari-oil treated HbSSM and HbSSF blood had significantly increased (P < 0.05) peroxidase activity which was a significant decrease in patients with anemia, compared with controls.

Dr. the lead scientist suggested at the end of the experiment, "Methanolic extracts from... C. papaya seed oil exhibited antisickling properties coupled with the potential to reduce stress in sickle cell patients".

Moreover, in patients with beta-thalassemia major and intermedia and E-beta-thalassemia, researchers found that by ameliorating oxidative stress in red blood cells, the disease may be treatable.

In vitro and in vivo, oral administration of FPP to beta-thalassemic mice (50 mg/mouse/day for 3 months) and to patients (3 g x 3 times/day for 3 months), reduced all the above mentioned parameters of oxidative stress (p < 0.001 in mice and p < 0.005 in patients).

The results suggested that FPP, as a potent antioxidant, might alleviate symptoms associated with oxidative stress in severe forms of thalassemia.

In human studies, injection of fermented papaya preparation (FPP) on two groups of beta-thal patients: beta-thal, major and intermedia, (in Israel) and E-beta-thal (in Singapore) increased the production of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host and significantly decreased the levels of ROS.

In other words, fermented papaya preparation (FPP) increased the content of reduced glutathione (GSH) in red blood cells (RBC), and decreased their reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation, membrane lipid peroxidation, and externalization of phosphatidylserine (PS), indicating amelioration of their oxidative status, without a significant change in the hematological parameters.

The finding in human studies indicated it is possible that longer duration of treatment, probably with the addition of an iron chelator, is required in order to achieve a significant change in the hematological parameters.

Taken altogether, Papaya, particularly in fermentation, may be considered a functional for the prevention and treatment of anemia with no side effects.
