Bilberry Protects Your Vision Against Eye Strain (Asthenopia), According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a whole fruit for the prevention and treatment of asthenopia (eye strain), according to studies.

Asthenopia is a condition characterized by nonspecific symptoms such as fatigue, pain in or around the eyes, blurred vision, headache, and occasional double vision.

Symptoms occur mostly in the people who have spent a long time in the visual task focusing, such as prolonged reading on the screen or newspaper.

Some researchers suggested by giving the eye some rest such as looking on a distant object at least once an hour can be helpful in alleviating the problem.

Mechanically, eye muscle imbalance or uncorrected vision can also cause asthenopia.

Symptoms of asthenopia include sore or irritated eyes dry or watery eyes,  blurred or double vision and increased sensitivity to light.

Some people may also experience symptoms of trouble focusing and pain in the neck, shoulder, and neck.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have asthenopia, please make sure you check with your doctor for preventive measure.

Some researchers suggested that asthenopia may also be a symptom in people with a chronic headache.

Dr. Vincent AJ, the lead scientist in the investigation of a chronic headache asthenopia wrote, "Sensitivity to light in the absence of a headache was reported by 27.8% of controls and 44.7% of headache sufferers (p less than 0.05)" and "The latter figure increased to 71.3% when a headache was actually present (p less than 0.001)".

These results indicated a strong correlation between a chronic headache and asthenopia.

Bilberry is a species of low-growing shrubs in the genus Vaccinium, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern Europe.

The plant has been used as herbs in traditional medicine for the treatment of acute and chronic diarrhea, gastritis, gastric ulcer, and duodenal ulcer, enterocolitis, ulcerative colitis, anemia, cystitis, kidney disease, and psoriasis, diabetes, etc.

Researchers with an aim of finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of asthenopia examined the effects of dietary supplementation with a combination of fish oil, bilberry extract, and lutein on subjective symptoms of asthenopia in humans.

A double-blind, randomized, parallel-group and the placebo-controlled trial was conducted by the Human Life Science R&D Center,
* In the Active group, eleven subjects were given a supplement containing omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish oil (docosahexaenoic acid 783 mg/day, eicosapentaenoic acid 162 mg/day), bilberry extract (anthocyanidin 59 mg/day), and lutein (17.5 mg/day) in soft gel capsule form, every day for 4 weeks.

* In the Placebo group, nine subjects were received placebo capsules.

According to the questionnaires taking before and after the experiment, researchers found that
* Asthenopia symptoms such as "stiff shoulder, low back pain", "frustration", "dry-eye", and "stuffy head" were improved in the Active group compared to the placebo.

* Subjected received the supplement also demonstrated a significant improvement od mental symptoms such as fatigue after 4 weeks.

No side effects were reported in the active group at the 2 and 4 weeks of supplemental injection, according to the return questionnaires.

The results strongly supported the use of dietary supplementation with the combination of omega-3 fatty acid-rich fish oil, bilberry extract, and lutein for the treatment of asthenopia.

Taken altogether, bilberry used alone or combined with other supplements may be considered functional remedies for the prevention and treatment of asthenopia with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Taken altogether, bilberry processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a natural remedy for the treatment of dry eye with no side effects, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Artichoke May Cure Non Alcoholic Liver Disease (NAFLD), Human Studies Suggest

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic liver disease (NAFLD), according to studies.

Nonalcoholic liver disease is a chronic condition caused by fat accumulated over time in the liver, affecting people who drink little to no alcohol.

In other words, if you have fat that makes up over 5% of the liver, you are considered to have fatty liver disease.

Nonalcoholic liver disease can be classified into noninflammatory fatty liver and inflammatory liver steatohepatitis.

Most patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic. However,  in the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of enlarged liver, persistent fatigue and pain in the upper right abdomen, depending on the formation of scars.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Liver Foundation, more than 50% of Canadians are overweight and 75% of obese individuals are at risk of developing a simple fatty liver, including 23% of them will develop fatty liver with inflammation sometimes during their lifetime.

According to the epidemiological studies, patients with nonalcoholic liver disease have elevated levels of liver enzymes gamma-glutamyl transferase (GGT), Aspartate Aminotransferase (AST) and Alanine Aminotransferase (ALT) which are the markers used to predict the severity of liver disease including fatty liver.

A blood test is required if your doctor suspects you might develop fatty liver disease, including NAFLD.

Other tests for diagnosis of liver fatty disease may include ultrasound, computed tomography (CT), proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-MRS), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).

The exact causes of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease are not identified. However, some researchers suggested unhealthy diet-induced obesity may be a major cause of the widespread NAFLD in the Western world.

Dr. Al-Dayyat HM, the lead scientist in the examination of the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease and associated dietary and lifestyle risk factors, said, "Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has emerged as the most common chronic liver disease worldwide with a reported prevalence ranging 20-30% depending on the studied populations".

And, "The high prevalence of NAFLD is probably due to the contemporary epidemics of obesity, unhealthy dietary pattern, and sedentary lifestyle. NAFLD patients are at increased risk of cardiovascular and liver-related mortality".

The findings strongly suggested if you are obese, you are at a substantially higher risk of fatty liver disease, compared to healthy weight individuals.

Artichoke is a perennial thistle of Cynara cardunculus species of the Cynara genus, belonging to the family Carduoideae native to Southern Europe around the Mediterranean.

The herbal plant has been used in traditional medicine as a liver protective and detoxified agent, and to treat digestive disorders, abdominal pain gas and bloating, etc.

In the course od finding a herbal remedy for the treatment of nonalcoholic liver disease (NAFLD), researchers evaluated the potential to attenuate lipid disturbances of Jerusalem artichoke (JA).

Selected Wistar rats included in the study were fed a control diet, a 60 % fructose-enriched diet (FRU), or an FRU with 10 % JA (n 6-7) for 4 weeks.

According to liver samples collected for biochemical and global gene expression analysis, pretreatment of dietary JA supplementation showed strong activity against hepatic TAG accumulation induced by the FRU.

Futhermore, JA also demonstrated significant inhibition of inflammation-inducing the expression of proteins associated with liver fatty acid synthesis, and development of liver fibrosis.

The results suggested that JA processes beneficial effects in the prevention of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease in molecular levels.

In order to collect more information about artichoke anti-non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, scientists investigated the artichoke leaf extract (ALE) potential hepatoprotective activity in patients with NAFLD.

100 subjects with ultrasound-diagnosed NAFLD randomized to either ALE 600 mg daily or placebo for a 2-month period were included in the randomized double-blind placebo-controlled parallel-group trial.

According to the results from 90 patients completed the study (49 ALE and 41 placeboes), intake of ALE did not exert any side effects.

ALE at the end of experiment displays a liver protective effect by increasing the hepatic vein flow reducing portal vein diameter (p < .001) and liver size (p < .001).

Injection of ALE also inhibited the liver damage and oxidative stress markers.

Moreover, the artichoke leaf extract also is found to reduce the levels of total cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, non-high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, and triglyceride concentrations, according to the assays.

Taken altogether, artichoke may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and treatment of non-alcoholic liver disease, pending to the confirmation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Honey Detoxes the Liver Against Toxicity in Vivo, According to Scientists

By Kyle J. Norton

On seeking natural therapy with no side effects, scientists may have a herbal remedy which detoxes the liver toxicity, according to studies.

The liver is a large organ in the human body that processes a number of function, including producing bile to aid digestion, detoxifying metabolites, synthesizing proteins, and filtering blood from the digestive tract before passing them to other parts of the body.

Symptoms of liver toxicity include gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and jaundice. Some patients with liver toxicity also experience the symptom of right upper quadrant abdominal pain.

If you have some of the aforementioned symptoms, please check with your doctor immediately. Acute liver toxicity may be life-threatening.

Most common causes of liver toxicity in the Western world are excessive alcohol drinking and long term use of certain medications and overdoses of herbal supplements.

Dr. Victor Navarro, M.D. in the examination of the herbal and dietary supplement in risk liver toxicity wrote, "Herbal and dietary supplements (HDS) -induced liver injury now accounts for 20% of cases of hepatotoxicity in the United States based on research data".

And, "The major implicated agents include anabolic steroids, green tea extract, and multi-ingredient nutritional supplements (MINS)".

The results strongly suggested if you are currently using some of the herbal and dietary supplements, please make sure that you follow the direction and guideline set out in the products to prevent unnecessary live toxicity.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding the natural and potential ingredient for the prevention of liver toxicity, researchers investigated the honey protective effect against toxic materials.

The study included 24 male rabbits allocated into four groups six rabbits each given daily during 24 days of experimentation; group 1: control group, received distilled water (0.1 ml / kg.b.wt /daily); group 2: received oral lead acetate (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily); group 3: treated with oral honey (1g /kg.b.wt/daily) and oral lead (2 g/kg.b.wt/daily), and group 4: received oral honey (1 g/kg.b.wt/daily).

Injection of lead group induced hepatic injury and caused anemia during three weeks of the exposure.

Treatment with honey in the lead group not only prevented liver lead toxicity and but also ameliorated lead-induced anemia.

The results clearly suggested that honey has a protective effect against lead-induced blood, hepatic and toxic effects.

Furthermore, in order to reveal more information about honey liver protective activity, researchers examined the Manuka and Talh honey against cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity in a rat model.

Before injection of Manuka and Talh honey, rats treated with CISP induced liver dysfunction observed by liver toxicity.

Administration of Manuka honey prevented CISP-induced histopathological changes observed in the rat liver but not in the kidney.

Manuka and Talh honey also reduced the oxidative stress in the liver by stimulating the production of antioxidant enzymes from the treated rats.

In other words, both honey inhibited the expression of proinflammatory cytokines including COX-2 and NF-κB by the cisplatin (CISP)-induced hepatotoxicity.

Taken altogether, honey, particularly Manuka and Talh honey may be considered function remedies for the prevention and treatment of liver toxicity, pending to the validation of larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Isothiocyanates as Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a bioactive compound Dithiolthiones isolated from the cruciferous vegetables for the prevention and treatment of oxidative stress-related diseases, according to the studies.

According to the oxidative stress theory, aging and cardiovascular diseases [CVDs], chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, chronic kidney disease, neurodegenerative diseases, and cancers are most common conditions associated with oxidative stress.

Antioxidants are stable molecules which play a critic role to protect our body against oxidation.

There are 2 types of antioxidants, antioxidants produced by the host are called antioxidant enzymes and antioxidant came from dietary intake.

Under normal conditions, antioxidants produced by the host are good enough to keep the levels of free radicals in check.

Oxidative stress, a major cause of many chronic ailments is a result of overexpression of free radical in the body that overwhelms the levels of antioxidants enzymes. In other words, free radicals have started a chain oxidative reaction that has not been stopped, leading to oxidative stress.

Free radicals are atoms, molecules, or ions with unpaired electrons through chemical bonds with other atoms or molecules during a chemical reaction.

They may have positive, negative or zero charges. The unpaired electrons cause free radicals to be highly chemically reactive to induce oxidative stress that damage the cell structures, protein and lipid and the alternation of DNA.

According to the study by the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf, Universitätsstr in the examination of the risk oxidative stress in Alzheimer disease, "The protective role of antioxidants against the development of several diseases and conditions recognized as risk factors for Alzheimer's disease (AD)" and "A variety of health behaviors, including an adequate supply of antioxidant micronutrients with the diet might help preventing AD directly, or indirectly through the mitigation of pathologic conditions associated with AD, such as vascular disease and diabetes".

Therefore, by enhancing antioxidant status in the body through regular physical activity and intake of fruits and vegetables which contain a high amount of dietary antioxidant to offset the free radical toxic effects, the risk of oxidative stress can be reduced substantially

Dithiolthiones are phytochemicals in the class of Organosulfides, found abundantly in cruciferous vegetables, garden sorrel, horseradish, etc.

In the concern of oxidative stress disorder that leads to age-related and gradual loss of corneal endothelial cells resulting in corneal edema and loss of vision. researchers at the Harvard Medical School, Boston investigated the antioxidant activity of sulforaphane (SFN) and D3T by targeting Nrf2-ARE in Fuchs endothelial corneal dystrophy (FECD).

Where Nuclear factor-like 2 (Nrf2-ARE) is a transcription factor which regulates the expression of antioxidant proteins that protect against oxidative damage triggered by injury and inflammation.

In human corneal endothelial cell lines (CEC) induced oxidative stress with tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP), injection of SFN decreased CEC apoptosis by 55% in the control group and by 43% in tBHP-treated specimens.

SFN enhanced nuclear translocation of Nrf2 in FECD specimens and decreased p53 gene in the cancer cells line under oxidative stress.

Where p53 is a protein that regulates the cell cycle and hence functions as a tumor suppression.

Futhermore, application of SFN protected the cell integrity and viability against injection of tert-Butyl hydroperoxide (tBHP), causing overexpression of free radicals in the initiation of oxidative stress.

These results clearly suggested SFN significantly promoted major ARE-dependent antioxidants and ameliorated oxidative stress-induced apoptosis in FECD.

Dr. Ziaei A said, " targeting Nrf2-ARE pathway may arrest degenerative cell loss seen in FECD".

Most importantly, in the review the anti-oxidant properties of isothiocyanates (ITCs), researchers found that The ITCs induces Phase II enzymes related to detoxification processes of chemical carcinogens to prevent the start of carcinogenesis and exhibits antitumor activity at post-initiation phase,

In other words, ITCs inhibited the substances which can cause cancers and cancers in the early and late stages.

In a dose-dependent manner, ITCs inhibit the cell viability of human cancer cell lines through its antioxidant activity.

The review showed support to the use of isothiocyanates such as sulforaphane for cancer and cardiovascular diseases treatments.

Taken altogether, there is no doubt that bioactive compound Isothiocyanates processed a significant antioxidant property may be used for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemicals Phytic Acid Anti Cancers Potency

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytic acid (Inositol hexaphosphate) may have a potential effect in reducing the risk and treatment of cancers, some scientists suggested.

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with the irregular cells growth that starts in the cells of the inner lining of a tissue or organ caused by DNA alternation.

At the advanced stage, cells of the invasive tumor may travel a distance away from the primary site to infect other healthy tissue of the organs, through lymph and blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Some cancers can be slow-growth such as prostate and colon cancer.

Primary cancer at stage 0 and 1 do not induce any symptoms. However, at the later stage, a larger size tumor can suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells leading to localized and severe symptoms and pain, depending on the types of cancer.

According to the statistics, in the US, the number of new cases of cancer(cancer incidence) is 439.2 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 cases). The number of cancer deaths (cancer mortality) is 163.5 per 100,000 men and women per year (based on 2011–2015 deaths).

Cancers which are diagnosed in the early stage have a 5 years survival rate closed to 100%. Therefore, the annual examination may be necessary for people who are classified to have a higher risk of cancer development.

The causes of cancer are unknown. researchers cannot explain why people with the same healthy condition, family history in the same family, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease while others do not.

Either they can explain why people who carry some of the risk factors associated with the development of cancer never have cancer, while others having no risk factor are diagnosed with cancer.

Conventionally, treatment of cancers completely depends on the types and grade of cancer. Some people with cancer at the early stage may only need one treatment. But most people with cancer in the later stage have a combination of treatments, including surgery with chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy.

Phytic acids (Inositol hexaphosphate) are phytochemicals of the organic acid found abundantly in nuts, sesame seeds, soybeans, wheat, pumpkin, beans, almonds, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the p[revention and treatment of cancers without inducing side effects, researchers examine the anticancer effects of phytic acid (IP6).

In vitro and in vivo phytic acid (IP6) exerted a strong anticancer activity by inhibiting the tumor growth and cell proliferation in a series of cancer cell lines, including colon, nipple, breast, prostate, cervix, liver, pancreas, melanoma and glioblastoma.

The efficacy of IP6 was probably associated with the promoted antioxidant production, improved signal transduction, enhance functions of the NK-cells and exhibited cell cycle arrest and activated proteins associated with cell death programming.

Furthermore, in the finding, the proper role for the treatment of cancer researchers looked into the concentration of IP6 and its lower phosphorylated forms (IP(1-5)),

At the 10 microM to 1 mM concentrations, IP6 and its lower phosphorylated forms (IP(1-5)) showed a potential activity in regulating vital cellular functions such as signal transduction, cell proliferation, and differentiation, similar to those of the previous study.

In vivo and in vitro, exogenously administered IP6 and internalized, IP6 and IP(1-5) inhibited cell growth.

Moreover, researchers found that application of IP6 not only decreased cellular proliferation but also causes differentiation of malignant cells often resulting in a reversion to normal phenotype.

The results strongly indicated that IP6 inhibits the cancer cell lines through a number of mechanisms, including cell cycle regulatory genes, differentiation genes, and tumor suppressor genes.

Taken all together, phytic acid (IP6) may be considered an anti-cancer bioactive compound for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Allicin, the Potent Anti Osteosarcoma Bioactive Supplement

By Kyle J. Norton

Phytochemical allicin isolated from garlic may be used for the prevention and treatment of osteosarcoma with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Osteosarcoma is a bone cancer found mostly in teenagers and people over age 60.

Most cases of osteosarcoma are associated with the genetic syndromes. In other words, the disease is the result of the conditions associated with inherited mutated genes from the parent.

However, an unhealthy lifestyle such as body weight, physical activity, diet, and tobacco, gender, age, height, ethnicity and exposure to bone radiation also use play a major role in many adult cancers.

According to the statistic,  in the US, osteosarcoma is rare and approximately 900 new cases of osteosarcoma are reported each year. and children and teens younger than 20 accounts for half of the numbers.

Dr. James J. Morrow, the lead scientist in the study of genetic risk of osteosarcoma wrote, "Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignancy of bone, typically presenting in the first or second decade of life"

And, " Increased risk of osteosarcoma is associated with a number of well-defined genetic syndromes: hereditary retinoblastoma (germline mutation of the Rb gene), Li-Fraumeni syndrome (germline mutation of the p53 gene), Bloom syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL2 gene), Werner syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL3 gene), and Rothmund-Thomson syndrome (germline mutation of the RECQL4 gene)"

These results strongly suggested that young teenagers with the genetic syndrome are more likely to be infected by the disease, compared to others.

Allicin is phytochemical containing sulfur in the class of organosulfur compound, found abundantly in onion and garlic.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the treatment of osteosarcoma with no side effects, researchers at the Wenling City Chinese Medicine Hospital looked into the anti osteosarcoma activity of the main biologically active compound derived from garlic.

The combined treatment significantly suppressed the invasion, motility and colony formation ability and activated the protein associated with a pro-apoptotic activity, compared to the lone treatment group.

Furthermore, in vivo.artesunate and allicin also inhibited the tumor growth and cell proliferation

Dr.Jiang W, the lead scientist said, "artesunate and allicin in combination exert synergistic effects on osteosarcoma cell proliferation and apoptosis".

Moreover, in the examined the effects of diallyl sulfide (DAS) derived from allicin in vitro and vivo on the proliferation of human osteosarcoma MG-63 cells, researchers found that in vivo, the nude mice MG-63 cells tumor-bearing model after twenty-one days treatment with DAS inhibit proliferation of MG-63 cells in a time- and concentration-dependent manner.

DSA groups (different concentrations) showed a significantly reduced the expression levels of VEGF mRNA, associated with stimulating the formation of blood vessels. compared with those in the control group.

At the dose of 20 and 40 μg/mL, cells migration was significantly lower in the DAS groups (91.4±8.3 and 81.8±7.4, respectively) compared to the control group (150.4±14.7, both).

Also at the dose of 20 and 40 μg/mL, DAS also decreased the microvessel density (MVD) of MG-63 tumor-bearing tissue.

Taken altogether, phytochemical allicin may be considered a bioactive compound for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of osteosarcoma.

However, intake of allicin as a form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose toxicity

Ginger, the Potent and Natural Therapy for Rheumatic Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent and kitchen spice for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated with rheumatism, according to studies.

Rheumatism is autoimmune and inflammatory diseases marked by inflammation and pain in the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue, especially rheumatoid arthritis.

In other words, rheumatic diseases are a medical and chronic condition characterized inflammation that affects your joints tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles, including a group of diseases associated with arthritis.

Depending on the types of rheumatic diseases, conventional treatment may include medication for reducing the symptoms, physiotherapy and stress management. The aim of the treatment is to alleviate pain and improve the quality of life. Sadly, none of the drugs has been found safe; all are known to produce from mild to serious side-effects.

Most common symptoms of rheumatic diseases are joint pain, reduced motion in a joint, particularly, joints inflammation that induces swelling, redness, on the affected area.

If you experience some of the above symptoms, you may have rheumatic diseases, please make sure you check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

There is no single cause of rheumatic diseases. Researchers believe groups of factors such as genes and environmental influences may be associated with the onset of the diseases, including the increase in age, gender, family history, exposure to environmental toxic substance and smoking.

However, the most common risk factor of rheumatic diseases in the Western world is obesity. Dr. the lead scientist, in the examination of the risk of obesity for the onset of rheumatic diseases, said, "The growing body of evidence recognizing the adipose tissue (AT) as an active endocrine organ secreting bioactive mediators involved in metabolic and inflammatory disorders, together with the global epidemic of overweight and obesity, rise obesity as a hot topic of current research".

" The chronic state of low-grade inflammation present in the obese condition and the multiple pleiotropic effects of adipokines on the immune system has been implicated in the pathogenesis of several inflammatory conditions including rheumatic autoimmune and inflammatory diseases".

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the prevention and treatment of rheumatic autoimmune and inflammatory diseases with no side effects, scientists at the Odense University examine the traditional use of ginger against rheumatism.

The study included 56 patients (28 with rheumatoid arthritis, 18 with osteoarthritis and 10 with muscular discomfort) randomly assigned to the use of powdered ginger against their afflictions.

Amongst the arthritis patients more than three-quarters experienced, to varying degrees, relief in pain and swelling. All the patients with muscular discomfort experienced relief in pain.

None of the patients reported adverse effects during the period of ginger consumption which ranged from 3 months to 2.5 years.

Further analysis of the results, researchers found that ginger exerts the similar effects of that of conventional medicine as an important mediator of inflammation.
Dr. Srivastava KC, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "at least one of the mechanisms by which ginger shows its ameliorative effects could be related to the inhibition of prostaglandin and leukotriene biosynthesis., i.e. it works as a dual inhibitor of eicosanoid biosynthesis".

Additionally, compared to conventional medicine such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and corticosteroids which treat rheumatic diseases through inhibiting the cyclooxygenase associated with the symptoms of inflammation and pain, ginger demonstrated the similar effects and improve quality of the life in patients with rheumatic diseases, without inducing any side effects during the course of the experiment.

These results clearly suggested that ginger may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of rheumatism with no adverse effects.
