Honey, the Potential Chemo Replacement for the Treatment Cancers, Scientists Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Honey may process certain chemical compounds which have a potential effect in the reducing risk and treatment of cancers with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Cancer cells are the type of cells which can grow indefinitely compared to normal cycle which can only survive after certain cycle division.

According to cellular biology, in a fully grown adult cell, the rate of cell proliferation is much less, and under normal circumstances and cell division in an adult can only occur when there is the need to replace cells that have been lost, damaged, or worn out.

Most cancers start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the tissue of the specific organ.

At the early stage, most cancer tumors do not induce any symptoms. However, after colonizing most tissue, the disorderly proliferative tumor can suppress the nearby tissue including nerve cells and blood vessel, causing localized pain and severe symptoms depending on the types of cancer.

Also, at this stage, malignant cells can also travel through lymph and blood to infect other healthy tissue, a distance away from the original site.

Although there are many risk factor associated with the onset of cancer, people with a genetic preposition are at highest risk.

Men who carry genetic mutation BRCA1, BRCA2, and HOXB13, inherited from the parents are at 70% risk of the prostate cancer, and women who carry the mutated genes BRCA1 and 2 have an increased risk breast cancer of over 55%.

Sadly, more than 12 percent of men with prostate cancer tested positive for hereditary mutations of cancer-causing genes, 87% of women reported BRCA testing by one-year post-diagnosis of breast cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cancer with no side effects, a joint study led by the Universiti Sains Malaysia was conducted to examine the role of honey in modulating the development and progression of tumors or cancers.

By searching the available data online literature, researchers found that there is available evidence (some of which is very recent) with regards to the antimetastatic, antiproliferative and anticancer effects of honey in various forms of cancer.

Honey was highly cytotoxic against tumor or cancer cells, while it was non-cytotoxic to normal cells.

Honey inhibited growth and proliferation of tumors or cancers.

Application of honey inhibited carcinogenesis by modulating the molecular processes of initiation, promotion, and progression stages.

Furthermore, in the study to examine the honey and royal jelly effects against cisplatin-induced nephrotoxicity in patients with cancer, researchers examined the results of patients with cancer assigned for cisplatin chemotherapy randomly divided into bee honey and royal jelly groups pretreated before the initiation and during cisplatin chemotherapeutic regimen and control group on cisplatin only and showed that
* Patients on crude bee honey and royal jelly capsules showed lower serum levels of renal injury products (creatinine and urea) compared to those in the control group.

* The changes in kidney parameters were significantly (p < 0.05) lower when compared within the bee honey group before and after cisplatin treatment.

These results indicated bee honey and royal jelly as natural compounds are effective in reducing cisplatin nephrotoxicity and may offer a promising chance for clinically meaningful prevention with no side effects.

Interestingly, Dr. the lead author in the examine the overwhelming evidence of the role of diet and lifestyle in cancer risk and prevention, suggested that there is a growing interest into the search for chemopreventative or chemotherapeutic agents derived from natural products.

And, honey is an important source of bioactive compounds derived from plants and recent years have been under the intensified study for its anticancer properties.

Recently, the role of honey in targeting key hallmarks of carcinogenesis, including uncontrolled proliferation, apoptosis evasion, angiogenesis, growth factor signaling, invasion, and inflammation has been presented. in numbers of conventional research.

Taken altogether, honey may be used as a functional food for the prevention of cancers and a secondary therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of cancers.

Ginger, The Spice Which Protects Our Body Against Inflammatory Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a pungent and kitchen spices which process a potential effect on the prevention and treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases without inducing any side effects.

Inflammation is a natural reaction of the immune system whose function is to protect our body against the invasion of the foreign stimuli and pathogens.

In the acute phase of tissue damage or injury, the white blood cells responsible for the first line of defense activate the production of the inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection with an aim to kill off the invasive agents.

However, in most cases, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines can damage the nearby cells and lead to improper healing with the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammation is an inflammation that lasts more than 3 months. The development and progression of chronic inflammatory diseases are the results of the immune system which can not kill off the invasive pathogens in the acute phase of infection or immune system mistakenly attacks the body tissue, leading to the persistently the low-grade inflammation.

In the further analysis of the evolution of physiological supersystems involved chronic inflammatory disease, Dr. Rainer H. Straub, the lead author said, "It is predicted that genes that protect energy stores are positively selected (as immune memory). This could explain why energy-demanding inflammatory episodes like infectious diseases must be terminated within 3–8 weeks to be adaptive, and otherwise become maladaptive:

These results suggested that the genes and networks used evolved during physiological supersystems, fitness consequences and during different life-history stages are positively selected if they serve acute, highly energy-consuming inflammation.

In other words, the immune system becomes maladaptive, if an inflammation does not terminate within eight weeks of infection.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The kitchen has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine to treat dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of inflammation without inducing any adverse effects, a joint study led by the CHA University, Seongnam was conducted to examine the molecular mechanism of 6-gingerol on adipocyte-mediated systemic inflammation in vitro and in high-fat-diet-induced obese zebrafish.

Injection of 6-gingerol exerted a significantly increased the production of anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 and decreased the expression of proinflammatory cytokines, TNFα, monocyte chemotactic protein-1, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6.

In the RAW 264.7 macrophages, 6-gingerol inhibited the protein expression of proinflammatory factors TNFα and monocyte chemotactic protein-1, a small cytokine that belongs to the CC chemokine family.

6-Gingerol decreased c-JUN N-terminal kinase and I kappa B kinase beta which plays an important role in the inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-B kinase activated by multiple stimuli such as inflammatory cytokines

Where JNK (c-Jun N-terminal kinase) is a member of the MAPK (mitogen-activated protein kinase) family that regulates a range of biological processes including inflammation.

6-gingerol also decreased the expression of inducible nitric oxide synthase in the stimulation of the expression of inflammation.

Dr. Choi J, the lead scientists wrote in the final report, " 6-gingerol suppresses inflammation through the regulation of the c-JUN N-terminal kinase-I kappa B kinase beta and its downstream targets".

Furthermore, the investigation of the effects of 6-gingerol ((S)-5-hydroxy-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl)-3-decanone) in experimental models that HepG2 cells were exposed to 500 µmol/l oleic acid (OA) for 24 h and preincubated for an additional 24 h with 6-gingerol (25, 50 or 100 µmol/l). 6-Gingerol (100 µmol/l) inhibited OA-induced triglyceride and inflammatory marker accumulation in HepG2 cells of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis also suggested that
* Daily application of 6ginger for 8 weeks while maintained on HFD. 6-Gingerol (100 mg/kg/day) alleviated liver steatosis, inflammation, and reversed

* [6]-gingerol also attenuated the expression of inflammatory cytokine genes and nuclear transcription factor-κB (NF-κB) increased in the HFD group.

The results strongly indicated 6-Gingerol attenuates HFD-induced steatohepatitis by downregulating NF-κB-mediated inflammatory responses and reducing hepatic lipogenic gene expression.

More interestingly, in the study includes five groups of rats containing 14 rats/group received corn oil (control), CPF (5 mg/kg), 6-GRF (100 mg/kg), CPF (5 mg/kg) + 6-GRF (50 mg/kg) and CPF (5 mg/kg) + 6-GRF (100 mg/kg) through gavage once per day for 35 days respectively, researchers showed that

* Before 6-gingerol application CPF-induced rats showed an increase in oxidative stress ((hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA)), inflammatory (myeloperoxidase (MPO), nitric oxide (NO) nitric oxide (NO) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF- α)), and apoptotic (caspase-3) markers.

* Injection of 6-gingerol attenuated all factors in the CPF induced rats.

* 6-GRF reduced the inflammatory expression through improving the activities of antioxidant enzymes catalase, superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) as well as glutathione (GSH) level in the brain, ovary, and uterus of rats exposed to CPF.

Dr. Abolaji AO the lead author said, " the protective effects of 6-GRF on CPF-induced toxicity in the brain and reproductive organs of rats may be due to it's potent antioxidative, anti-inflammatory and antiapoptotic properties".

Where Chlorpyrifos (CPF) is an organophosphorus pesticide widely used in agricultural applications and household environments.

Taken all together, ginger processed abundantly 6-gingerol may be considered a functional kitchen spice for the prevention and treatment of inflammation.

Tualang honey Protects the Oral Cells Against the Onset of Mouth Cancer With No Side Effects

Kyle J. Norton

Mouth/oral cancer is a medical condition associated with the irregular cell growth on the tissue of the mouth caused by genetic alteration of the cell DNA.

Most cases of mouth cancer start in the flat, thin cells (squamous cells) of the inner lining tissue that line the lips and the inside of the mouth.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018, approximately, over 50,000 people will get oral cavity or oropharyngeal cancer. An estimated over 10,000 people will die of these cancers.in the United States.

The exact causes of mouth cancer are unknown. However, the increase in age, gender, exposure to radioactive, long-term use of tobacco use and excessive alcohol drinking, viral infection and genetic mutation are the most common prevalent risk factors found in people with mouth cancer.

Some researchers also suggested that people with immune system suppression due to the use of an immune suppressor are at the increased risk of the disease.

The Canadian Cancer Society in the explanation of how weakened immune system can induce mouth cancer, wrote, "Your immune system can be weakened after an organ transplant or treatment for an immune system disease. and "People with a weakened immune system have a higher risk of developing oral cancer, especially lip cancer".

Also, " The higher risk may be due to taking drugs that suppress your immune system. People with weakened immune systems are also more likely to get an HPV infection, which increases the risk of oral cancer"

If you experience symptoms of a sore that does heal  within a few days, a growth, lump or thickening of the skin or lining of your mouth, tongue and jaw pain that do not heal in weeks, persistent sore throat, difficult or  chewing and swallowing, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of mouth cancer.

Honey is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The rich golden liquid It is considered one of healthy sweet food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

On finding a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of t inducing mouth cancer without inducing any side effect compared to surgery followed by chemo and.or radiotherapy researchers at the Universiti Sains Malaysia examine the antiproliferative activity of local honey (Tualang) on OSCC cell lines.

The study procedures include several concentrations of Tualang honey (1% - 20%) were applied directly on OSCC cell lines for 3, 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 hours.

The study also used MTT assay to assess the cell viability and the Annexin V-FITC Apoptosis Detection Kit.to detect the cell apoptosis.

Application of Tualang honey induced cancer cells apoptosis observed by cell degradation and reduced in numbers.

In other words, the apoptotic cellular changes like becoming rounded, reduction in cell number, blebbed membrane and apoptotic nuclear changes like nuclear shrinkage, chromatin condensation, and fragmented nucleus were observed through MTT assay.

The MTT assay also suggested that Tualang honey exerts an inhibitory effect in a time and dose-dependent manner.

The efficacy was also found in the 50% inhibitory concentration (IC50) for OSCC of 4%.

The maximum inhibition of cell growth of ≥80% was observed in the concentration at 15%.

Dr. Ghashm AA the lead scientist at the final report wrote, "Tualang honey showed the antiproliferative effect on OSCC...cell lines by inducing early apoptosis".

Taken altogether, Tualang honey may be considered a functional food for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of mouth cancer.

Due to the limitation of the above study, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of Tualang honey anti-mouth cancer possibilities.

Black beans Protect Your Large Intestine Against Colon Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Black bean may have a profound effect in reducing and treatment of colon cancer, some scientists suggested.

The colon also known as the large bowel or large intestine, is the part of the digestive system in our body.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the colon due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At this stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

After penetrating deeper into the colon layer, the cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the fluids and blood circulation.

At this stage, the increased size of the tumor may suppress the nearby tissue, organs or nerves cells causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

Most common colon cancer metastasis are the lungs, liver.

According to the epidemiological studies, the most common risk factors of colon cancer are older
age, ethnicity, personal and family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, inflammatory intestinal conditions.

Particularly, people who follow the low-fiber, high-fat diet or have a sedentary lifestyle. are associated with the substantial risk for the onset of the disease.

Dr. Y J Cong, the lead author in the concerns of the sedentary behavior in risk of colon cancer in modern society, launched an investigation to examine the association of sedentary behavior with colon and rectal cancer.

The search of the databases of PubMed, Embase, and Google Scholar databases up to May 2013 to identify cohort and case-control studies that evaluated the association between sedentary behavior and colon or rectal cancer identified 23 studies with 63 reports included 4 324 462 participants.

After assessing the results of all the studies, the doctor team wrote. "Sedentary behavior is associated with an increased risk of colon cancer. Subgroup analyses suggest a positive association between sedentary behavior and risk of rectal cancer in cohort studies".

Black bean is a Small roughly ovoid legume with glossy black shells, genus Phaseolus, belonging to the family Fabaceae.

The bean can be bought in most grocery stores all around the year in dried and canned forms. It is believed that black bean was first domesticated growth in South America.

The major chemical compounds of black bean include anthocyanin, (-)-epicatechin, delphinidin, petunidin, flavonols, and malvidin.

On finding, a natural whole food for the treatment of colon cancer, researchers at the Tecnológico de Monterrey-Campus Monterrey conducted an investigation to examine the black bean antioxidant capacity and antiproliferative activity against cancer cell lines.

Flavonoids extracted from seed coats exerted a potential effect against colon cancer cell line'

The extracts obtained from seed coats after 3 and 5 germination days inhibited all cancer cell lines proliferation, including the tested colon cancer with no cytotoxicity against control cells.

Further analysis also suggested that flavonols and group B saponins isolated from the seed coat were more related to hepatic and colon cancers.

These results indicated that not all chemical compounds found in black bean have a potential effect in the inhibition of colon cancer. However, intake of the black bean as a whole food may have significant effects in reducing the risk of colon cancer.

Additionally, in the finding evidence to suggest an inverse relationship between bean consumption and colon cancer, researchers at the Food Science program at the Michigan State University conducted a study to determine whether consumption of black beans and/or navy beans would reduce colon carcinogenesis in rats.

Selected rat group were fed a modified AIN-93G diet (control) or diets containing 75% black beans or 75% navy beans for 4 wk, and then colon cancer was initiated by the administration of two injections of azoxymethane 1 wk apart.

At 31 wk after the second injection, the incidence of colon adenocarcinomas was significantly lower in rats fed the black bean (9%)  than in rats fed the control diet (36%).

Total tumor multiplicity was also significantly lower in rats fed the black bean diet than in rats fed the control diet.

After taking into account co and confounders, Dr. Hangen L, the lead author said, "The 44-75% reduction in colon carcinogenesis in rats fed beans was attributed to 1) more controlled appetites, leading to significantly less body fat, and 2) much greater concentrations of butyrate in the distal colon".

These results suggested black beans only have a potential effect in lowering the risk of colon cancer.  but also stop cells multiplicity in the case of colon cancer.

However, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food or its bioactive compounds during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of black bean anti-colon cancer possibilities.

Herbal Cayenne, the Best Antioxidant Functional Fruit

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Cayenne may have a potential effect in stimulating the production of antioxidants from the host body to inhibit the overexpression of free radicals, some scientists suggested.

Free radicals are unstable molecules having an unpaired electron in the outer ring. in order for them to maintain stable, free radical must donate or steal an electron from another molecule, leading to a domino's chain reaction that cannot stop until inhibited by antioxidant or they are paired.

Antioxidants are stable molecules that inhibit the free radical oxidation and the unpaired electrons which are highly and chemically reactive in the human body.

Normally, expression of free radicals is neutralized by antioxidants produced by the host body enzymes. However, if the host antioxidant enzymes are suppressed, free radical can overexpress, leading to oxidative stress.

Overexpression of free radicals in initiating oxidative stress to the human body can cause oxidative damage to the cells, proteins, and DNA, the underlying factors in many chronic diseases, including type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.

Most common free radicals have been found to cause significant damage to DNA, proteins, carbohydrates, and lipids of the cell nucleus, and membranes are hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radical.

The causes of the production of free radicals are associated either from normal essential metabolic processes in the human body inducing diet or from external sources such as exposure to X-rays, ozone, cigarette smoking, air pollutants, and industrial chemicals.

People who follow the Western diet high in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods ( high oxidation) and low in fruits and vegetable (low antioxidants) are susceptible to the overexpression of free radical or oxidative stress.

Truly, Fats and oils not can be oxidized during storage as a result of exposure to light, air but also can become oxidized, creating free radicals, if they are heated in high temperature, the main cooking style found in the Western diet.

Saturated fats are less likely than unsaturated fats to become oxidized. When cooking fats are reused, they become more oxidized and produce even more free radicals.

Cayenne is also known as Cayenne pepper, a red, hot chili pepper, belonging to Capsicum annuum, the family Solanaceae, native to sub-tropical and tropical regions.

The kitchen spice has been used in traditional medicine to increases metabolism, enhance circulatory system and stomach and the intestinal tract, adjust blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, treat frostbite, muscles, arthritis, rheumatism, low back pain, strains, sprains, bruises, and neuralgia, etc.

The chemical constituents of Cayenne include capsaicin, capsaicin oil, solaine, xanthenes, oleic acid, palmitic acid, etc.

In the investigation of the antioxidant activity, DPPH radical-scavenging activity correlated with total bioactive compounds (capsaicinoids, carotenoids, flavonoids, and total phenolics) in pepper cultivars, researchers at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid launched a study on the individual carotenoid and phenolic content as well as the antioxidant properties of four red-hot dried cultivars (Capsicum annuum L.).

Hot dried peppers at ripe stage demonstrated the high content of bioactive compounds that exhibited significant antioxidant properties (26-80 micromol Trolox equivalents/g of dry matter), compared to polyphenols >2000 mg/100 g of dry matter and carotenoids ranging from 95-437 mg/100 g of dry matter.

The amount released from the food matrix by the action of digestive enzymes was about 75% for total polyphenols, up to 49% for both beta-carotene and zeaxanthin, and up to 41% for beta-cryptoxanthin.

And, 50 to 80% of these carotenoids could reach the colon to be potentially fermented or could remain unavailable.

Furthermore, the study of sweet red bell pepper, one of the best sources of ascorbic acid and carotenoids and phenolic compounds important in the human diet, researchers emphasized that organic growing increased the level of antioxidant compounds such as carotenoids, phenolic compounds and vitamin C in sweet bell pepper, compared to conventional cultivated.

However, the second significant factor affecting the antioxidant compound content of sweet bell pepper was totally depending on the varieties.

Geography, climate change environment factors and time of harvest may also affect the antioxidant contents of the bell pepper.

Taken altogether, herbal cayenne processed a high amount of bioactive antioxidants may be considered a functional food for reducing the risk of oxidative stress-related diseases.

Due to numbers of an unknown factor which may affect the quality of the fruits, further data collection large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of herbal cayenne antioxidant possibilities.

Herbal Aloe Vera Juice, the Potent Mouth Wash for Treatment of Oral Mucositis Caused by Chemo and Radiation Therapy in Patients with Head and Neck Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Aloe vera may have a potential effect in reducing the oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer, some scientists suggested.

Head and neck cancer is a class of cancers that start in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

At the early stage, cells on the surface of the inner lining associated with head and neck start to grow irregularly and disorderly.

However, at the advanced stage, as cancer has penetrated into the deeper layers, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.

In some cases at the advanced stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

Oral mucositis is one of the common side effects in cancer patients who are under chemo and radiation treatment, leading to symptoms of pain, nutritional problems as a result of an inability to eat, and increased risk of infection due to open sores in the mucosa.

The symptom has been found to reduce the quality of life of cancer patients.

According to The Oral Cancer Foundation, patients experience the side effect of oral mucositis after 5 to 10 days of chemotherapy. Normally, the side effect will disappear itself in short few weeks, depending on the types of medicine, doses, and duration of the treatment.

Dr. Begonya Chaveli-López, the lead author in the study "Treatment of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy" wrote, "Very few interventions of confirmed efficacy are available for the management of oral mucositis due to chemotherapy. However, according to the reviewed literature, the use of palifermin, cryotherapy and low power laser offer benefits, reducing the incidence and severity of oral mucositis".

On finding a natural and effective ingredient for the treatment of oral mucositis with no side effects, researchers examined the topical Aloe vera, a widely used for mild sunburn, frostbites, and scalding burns for its effect on mucositis.

Aloe gel showed the beneficial effects for wound healing, mucous membrane protection, and treatment of oral ulcers.

Application of Aloe gel also enhanced the anti-inflammatory, immunomodulation, antifungal, scavenging free radicals, increasing collagen formation and inhibiting collagenase, epidemiological studies suggested.

Oral Aloe vera mouthwash demonstrated a significant prevention of radiation-induced mucositis by its wound healing and anti-inflammatory mechanism.

The herbal mouthwash also reduced oral candidiasis of patients undergoing head and neck radiotherapy due to its antifungal and immunomodulatory properties.

These efficacies indicated that Aloe vera mouthwash may be considered an alternative potential for treating radiation-induced oral mucositis and candidiasis in patients with head and neck cancers.

Futhermore, in the finding the most effective agent for treatment of oral mucositis, the Haji Mirza Mohammad conducted a triple-blind, randomized controlled trial in the comparison of the Aloe vera mouthwash with a benzydamine mouthwash in the alleviation of radiation-induced mucositis in head and neck cancer patients.

The trial included 26 eligible head and neck cancer patients who were to receive conventional radiation therapy at the radiation oncology department were randomized to receive an Aloe vera mouthwash or a benzydamine mouthwash.

No difference in the distribution of mucositis severity between the two groups, at the baseline.

The mean interval between radiation therapy and the onset of mucositis was similar for both groups.

The mean interval between the start of radiation therapy and the maximum severity of mucositis were was also similar in both the Aloe vera and benzydamine groups (Aloe vera 23.38±10.75 days, benzydamine 23.54±15.45 days).

According to the comparison test researchers suggested that the Aloe vera mouthwash could be an alternative agent in the treatment of radiation-induced mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer due to its exertion of the similar effects as of those of beneficial as benzydamine mouthwash in alleviating the severity of radiation-induced mucositis with no side effects.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera juice may be considered a functional juice for the treatment of the side effect of oral mucositis caused by chemo and radiation therapy in patients with head and neck cancer

White Button Mushroom Which Processes A Potential to Cure Fatty Liver Disease

By Kyle J. Norton

White button mushroom may have a protective effect against the onset and treatment nonalcoholic liver disease, some scientists suggested.

Fatty liver or hepatic steatosis is a disease caused by the buildup of fat in the liver. If the fat in your liver is over 5 percent proportional to the liver cells, you are considered to have the early stage of the fatty liver disease.

According to the American liver foundation, the fatty liver is the most common disease in the US, affecting over affecting around 25 % of the population. The disease is most common in the age group between 40 and 60.

The common diseases associated with the onset of the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease include obesity hyperlipidemia, or high levels of fats in the blood, especially high triglycerides, diabetes, and genetic inheritance.

However, some researchers also found that long-term use of certain medication is the prevalent risk factors of the fatty liver such as rapid weight loss side effects of certain medications, including methotrexate (Trexall), tamoxifen (Nolvadex), amiodarone (Pacerone), and valproic acid (Depakote).

Can the nonalcoholic fatty liver disease be prevented? Dr. William Nseir, the lead author in the study " Role of diet and lifestyle changes in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease", wrote, "there is no drug therapy that can be formulated for treating NAFLD. A combination of dietary modifications and increased physical activity remains the mainstay of NAFLD management" and

"NAFLD patients, whether obese or not, should be educated that a healthy diet and physical activity have benefits beyond weight reduction".

The result suggested that if you have followed a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables, whole grain and low in saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food and lifestyle accompanied by moderate exercise, you risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease is closed to zero.

If you are experiencing the symptoms of a persistently enlarged fluid-filled abdomen, jaundice of the skin and eyes,  confusion and abnormal bleeding, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of fatty liver disease.

Mushroom is a standard name of white button mushroom, the fleshy, spore-bearing fruiting body of a fungus produced above ground on soil or on its food source,

It is a genus A. Muscaria and belong to the family Amanitaceae and has been cultivated in many cultures all over the world for foods and health benefits.

The chemical constituents of white button mushroom include
Astraodorol, Psilocybin, Lectin, adustin, ribonuclease, nicotine, 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-6-methylbenzoic acid, orsellinic acid, melleolide, ergosterol, genistein, daidzein, daucosterol, genistin, uracil, and D-mannitol.

In the concerns of low estrogen production in the risk of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease in the menopause women, researchers at the cellular team at the Beckman Research Institute of the City of Hope launched an investigation to examine the effects of white mushroom in the groups of ovariectomized mice (a model of postmenopausal women).

Selected OVX mice were fed a high-fat diet supplemented with WBM powder before injection of white button mushroom to induce fatty disease pattern.

Application of white button mushroom (WBM) exerted a significantly protective effect against liver steatosis in ovariectomized (OVX) mice.

As dietary WBM intake significantly lowered liver weight and hepatic injury markers in OVX mice.

The pathological examination also suggested that WBM lowers fat accumulation in tissue in the livers of mice.

Furthermore, the glucose clearance ability of tested mice also improved substantially compared to untreated mice group.

According to the microarray analysis, genes associated to the fatty acid biosynthesis pathway, particularly the genes for fatty acid synthetase (Fas), a major determinant of the maximal hepatic capacity to generate fatty acids by de novo lipogenesis and fatty acid elongase 6 (Elovl6) which plays a key role in fat synthesis were down-regulated (reduced function).

Additionally, in vivo, the down-regulation of the expression of FAS and ELOVL6 in the HepG2 cell line by WBM extract was attributed to the inhibition of Liver X receptor (LXR) signaling and it's downstream transcriptional factor SREBP1c.

Where Liver X receptors (LXRs) are important regulators of cholesterol and fatty acid and SREBP-1c is associated with fatty liver and increased visceral fat mass.

The finding indicated that WBM is protective against hepatic steatosis and NAFLD in OVX mice as a model for postmenopausal women.

The study was published on October 25 on the US National Library of Medicine and National Institutes of Health. You can view the publication by clicking the link in the resources,

Taken altogether, white button mushroom may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of nonalcoholic fatty liver disease.
