* Fennel, The Herb or Food Better Than Ibuprofen in Stopped Primary Painful Period

Kyle J. Norton

Adding a portion of fennel in daily diet may have a potential and positive effect in reduced pain caused by sensory neurons stimulus in women with primary dysmenorrhea, some scientists suggested.

The results of the investigation were carried out by numbers of respectable institutes, including the Babol University of Medical Sciences and Health Services and details of the experiment were published on online medical library.

Antinociceptive activity is an action or process of blocking the painful injurious stimulus by sensory neurons.

Dysmenorrhea, is also known as painful period, a menstrual cramp in the regions of pelvis or lower abdomen that last a few days during menstruation, caused by over production of certain hormones in the family of prostaglandins.

Some women may experience periodic pains during or prior to, or after menstrual periods in the lower abdomen. In some cases, the pain can also spread over to the whole abdomen and lumbosacral region.

There are 2 Types of dysmenorrhea
* Primary dysmenorrhea
Primary dysmenorrhea effects about 90% in the girls in the first 2 years of menstruation. Some researchers suggested that it may be caused by immature of the reproductive organs.

* Secondary dysmenorrhea
Secondary dysmenorrhea is caused by gynecological diseases. including hormone imbalance, endometriosis, fibromas, pelvic immflammatory disease, etc.

Accompanied to the painful period, women may also experience to psychological symptoms such as anxiety, depression, irritability, digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting and physical symptoms such as headaches, dizziness and painful breasts.

Fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) is a plant species of genus, belongings to Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), native to the Mediterranean, used in traditional and herbal medicine as warming, carminative, antispasmodic, antidepressant agent and to stimulate the appetite, ease indigestion, soothe coughing, reduce intestinal spasms, to regulate the menstrual cycle and relieve PMS,...

In order to compare the effect of combination of fennel extract/vitamin E with ibuprofen on the intensity of pain in primary dysmenorrhea among the students of Tabriz city in 2007-2009, researchers od the joint study lead by the Kosar Department of Shahid Motahhary Hospital carried out an investigation of 68 students from Medical and Tabriz universities, who were living in the dormitory, suffering from primary dysmenorrhea.

All participants were randomly divided into two groups of 34 students each (the two groups used combination of fennel extract/vitamin E and ibuprofen cross-over form in the 2 months).

Application of the combination displayed a mean of peak pain intensity in the first, second, third, sixth, and forty-eighth hours that is significant lower than the  ibuprofen group.

Also, combination of fennel extract/vitamin E was more effective than ibuprofen in the first hour (P < 0.03) and second hour (P < 0.04), according to the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) tool for ranking the intensity of the pain.

These result suggested that fennel and vitamin E combination was more efficacy in blocking the neuron in transmitting pain caused by over expression prostaglandins hormone in induction of abdominal muscle constriction in compared to conventional medicine ibuprofen.

Dr. Nasehi M, the lead author, after taking into account of other co and con founders said, "Combination of fennel extract/vitamin E is effective on decreasing the intensity of pain of primary dysmenorrhea, and it is advised to those who cannot use chemical drugs".

In a separate study to investigate the effect of fennel used alone on primary dysmenorrhea symptoms and menorrheal duration, 80 female students satisfied the criteria and guideline were randomly divided in to two groups of intervention (n = 40) and control (n = 40).

The intervention group was given one soft capsule Fennel (30 mg) every 4 hours, 3 days before menstruation till the 5th day and continued for 3 months. The control group received no medication.

According to the result of the experiments, fennel treated group exerted significant decrease of the mean of nausea intensity and weakness from 1.93, and 2.88 after 3 months, in compared to control group from 2.37, 6.65 in control group.

Furthermore, in compared to control group, fennel group reduced the duration of menstrual period after two and three months of use.

Moreover, Fennel treated group demonstrated a strong improvement of quality and feelings of well-being after 1 and 3 months.

Taken together, fennel may be considered as functional food for treatment of Primary Dysmenorrhea without inducing adverse effects.

The Root Veggie That Inhibits Immune-Mediated, Cardiovascular, Infectious,....and Systemic Inflammatory Diseases Caused By Thrombosis

Kyle J. Norton

Carrots may have a profound and positive effect in reduced risk and complications of thrombosis some scientists suggested.

The results of the analysis were reported in the online literature conducted by numbers of universities including Kobe Gakuin University.

You can view the abstract from the studies by clicking any link at the resources data.

Thrombosis is a medical condition characterized by the formation of a blood clot inside a blood vessel, obstructing the flow of blood in the circulatory system.

Thrombosis is considered  a common cause of atherosclerosis.

The 2 major types of thrombosis are
* If the blood clot blocks a vein, it is classified as venous thrombosis.
Veins are blood vessels that carry blood from the body back into the heart.
* If the blood clot blocks an artery, it is arterial thrombosis.
Arteries are the blood vessels that carry oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the body.

The actual causes of thrombosis are debatable. However, some researchers suggested that diseases or conditions of the leg veins, immobility due to physical incapability,  bone fracture, obesity,... and genetic mutation of certain genes are associated to the causes and risks of thrombosis.

Importantly, certain medications such as Apixaban, Dabigatran, Edoxaban, Heparin. Rivaroxaban ..... and Warfarin and birth control pills containing the hormones desogestrel, gestodene, drospirenone, and cyproterone are also considered as risk factors of thrombosis.

Risks of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE), are increased substantially in pregnant women, especially in women who have an inherited clotting disorder.

Diseases associated to include immune-mediated disease, systemic inflammatory, cardiac,.......and infectious diseases.

Carrot, a root vegetable with an orange color is a sub species of Daucus carota, belongings to the family Apiaceae, native to Asian and Europe.

In the investigation to find a daily diet with proven antithrombotic effects in reduced risk of acute thrombotic event researchers at the Kobe Gakuin University launched a study to examine vegetables and fruits for antithrombotic activity.

The vegetables included 15 different varieties of carrot using ashear-induced in vitro platelet reactivity/thrombolysis method, Global Thrombosis Test, formerly Gorog Thrombosis Test.

According to the differentiation of the antiplatelet and thrombolytic activities, researchers showed that
* Different carrot varieties demonstrate a variable effect on thrombosis in vitro and in vivo.

* In laser-induced thrombosis model in mice, heat treatment of carrot variety
exerts an antithrombotic effect independent from heat treatment of the filtrate at 100 degrees C for 10 min.

* In oral intake, the particular heat resistant variety (SAKATA-0421) shows an antithrombotic effect in vivo possibly due to antiplatelet reactivity and/or spontaneous thrombolytic activity.

Interestingly, the expression of antithrombotic activity showed no significant correlation between antithrombotic activity and the levels of polyphenolics and any other biochemical parameter, including antioxidant activity, alpha-carotene and beta-carotene, alpha-tocopherol and ascorbic acid

These results suggested that carrot demonstrated strong impacts in reduced blood clot accumulation regardless to the effect of individual ingredients.

Dr. Yamamoto J, the lead author said, "An inappropriate diet is known to enhance the risk for acute thrombotic events and a regular diet with proven antithrombotic effects( including carrots) might be a beneficial way to prevent disease" and "the present study added a new variety to the list of antithrombotic fruits and vegetables".

Further analysis of the tissue linked to the development of cardiovascular disease due to endothelial activation in the induction of thrombosis of blood vessels, researchers at the Comanche County Memorial Hospital launched an investigation to evaluate the effect of diet-derived antioxidants in suppressed and/or delayed progression of cardiovascular disease.

The suggestions of water-dispersible forms of various carotenoids (beta-carotene, lutein and lycopene) from natural sources in microemulsion were recommended to study the effects of carotenoids on tissue factor activity in human endothelial cells.

According to the differentiation, all carotenoids suppressed tissue factor activity (P<.01) and gene expression in human endothelial cells which may have a strong effect in the contribution of the development of blood clot in the vessels.

Endothelial cells in the endothelium have an essential effect in regulate vascular tone, cellular adhesion, smooth muscle cell proliferation, and vessel wall inflammation.

Moreover, application of carotenoids also enhanced phosphorylation of Akt activity in human endothelial cells on tissue factor activity in regulation of thrombosis of blood vessels.

After taking into account of other co and con founders, Dr. Lee DK, the lead scientist said, "diet-derived antioxidants might suppress and/or delay progression of cardiovascular disease (through regulating endothelial activation in the expression of thrombosis of blood vessels)".

The findings suggested that carrot and its bioactive carotenoids may be considered as functional food in reduced formation of blood clot in the vessels in the induction of cardiovascular diseases.

However, intake of supplementation should be taken with extreme care as acute liver toxicity was reported in numbers of the case in medical literature.

The Herbal Extract That Kills Gastric/Stomach Cancer Cells, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a chemical constituent isolated from Andrographis paniculata, with potential in reducing risk and treatment of gastric cancer, a respectable institute study suggested.

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach.

Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric cancer.

The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease(4).

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking(4).

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and virus, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development(5).

If you experience some of the symptoms such as feeling bloated after eating, feeling full after only eating small amounts of food,  persistent heartburn, and severe indigestion, stomach pain,.... and persistent vomiting, please check with your doctor right the way for the arrangement of a diagnosis(4).

The picture captured during the exam may sometimes be misdiagnosis as an ulcer, a mushroom-shaped or linitis plastica.

If the suspicious area is found, endoscopic ultrasound may be necessary to rule out the cancer onset possibility.

Most importantly, in compared to antioxidant effects in a patient with H. pylori gastritis and gastric cancer, researchers found that concentration of serum superoxide dismutase and serum malondialdehyde that exhibiting oxidative stress caused by overexpression of free radicals are significantly higher and plasma ascorbic acid, the antioxidants are significantly lower in gastric cancer patients.

These results suggested gastric cancer is also associated to the imbalance of ratio of antioxidants produced by the host enzymes and free radical accumulation, leading to elevated ROS that causes oxidative stress in alternated DNA of gastric cells through cytotoxicity.

According to the Canadian cancer society, in 2017(6), an estimated:
* 3,500 Canadians were diagnosed with stomach cancer.

* 2,100 Canadians died from stomach cancer.

* 2,200 men were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 1,250 died from it.

* 1,300 women were diagnosed with stomach cancer and 790 died from it.
Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka.

The herb has been used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic for treatment of common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,...

According to the joint study lead by the Chosun University, Andrographolide, a natural compound isolated from Andrographis paniculata, exerted a potentiated apoptosis and reduction of the ability of a cell to form clones triggered by recombinant human tumor necrosis factor of signaling systemic inflammation involved immune stimulation.

The study also found that Andrographolide enhances TRAIL(a protein functioning as a ligand in regulated the process of cell death)-induced apoptosis through interfering cell division via a protein functioning involved the process of cell death and ROS generation in gastric cancer.

Dr. Lim SC, the lead author said, "Exposure of GC cells to andrographolide altered the expression level of several growth-inhibiting and apoptosis-regulating proteins, including death receptors".

In three gastric cancer cell lines (SGC7901, MGC803, BGC823), with Application of Andrographis significantly decreased gastric cancer cells adherence to stimulated endothelial cells by inhibited the E-selectin expression that activated cytokines of the immune system.

Taking all together, Andrographis paniculata with high levels of Andrographolide may be used as a therapeutically promising product in reducing risk and treatment of gastric cancer.

However, further data collection on large sample size and multi-center clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of  Andrographis and its bioactive compounds protective effect against gastric cancer possibilities.

Intake of  Andrographis paniculata supplement should be taken with exceptional care as overdoses may cause acute liver toxicity.

* The Herb That Inhibits Prostate Cancer, Skin and Heart Disease, Polycythemia, Enlarged Prostate, Hypertension,....... and Infertility Caused by Excess Hormone Testosterone

Kyle J. Norton

Herbal plants have formed a fundamental source for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Recent study conducted by somerenowned institutes suggested that Vitex agnus castus (Vac.) may have a potential in decreased over production of testosterone on the male reproductive physiology.

Testosterone is a male steroid hormone played an important role in male reproductive organs and building bone and muscle mass as well as stimulating sexual desire in both sexes.

In women, Testosterone is produced by the ovaries in women in small amount.

The hormone also produced small quantities by the adrenal glands in both sexes.

According to Dr. Chris Iliades, MD in the article of " The Myth of Too Much Testosterone" wrote, too much testosterone produced by the body may be associated to long term intake of anabolic steroids, hyperthyroidism, adrenal or testicular tumor.

In women,  high testosterone levels can cause hirsutism, polycystic ovary syndrome,..... and congenital adrenal hyperplasia(6).

In men, conditions associated to high levels of testoserone include hypertension, liver disease skin infections, polycythemia, alteration in sexual organs, heart disease,...... and infertility(6)

Symptoms of over production of testosterone include acne or oily skin,  breast enlargement worsening of sleep apnea, fluid retention, decreased testicle size and sperm count, particularly in increased risk of prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.

Interestingly, symptoms like shrunken testicles and breast enlargement is the result caused by excess testosterone which is converted to the female hormone estrogen.

The condition also increases risk of behavior symptoms such as mood swings.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belongings to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of year as anaphrodisiac herb.

And, is considered as Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts.

In the study of hydroalcoholic Vac. extract (extraction by percolation technique) with the  doses: 65, 165, 265, 365 and 465 mg kg-', applied to bromocriptine as a dopamine receptor agonist (5, 10, 20 mg kg(-1))(the drug causes increased level of testosterone)(4) and haloperidol((the drug causes increased level of testosterone)(5) as a dopamine receptor antagonist (1, 1.5, 2, 2.5, 3 mg kg(-1)), injection male mice treated exerted significant effects in lower levels of testosterone in compared to other treatment groups, when used alone or combination with others extract.

Dr. Nasri S, the lead author said, ". LH and testosterone were measured by Radio Immuno Assay (RIA). LH and testosterone, showed significant decrease in bromocriptine group and haloperidol increased these hormones. Vac. extract decreased significantly the LH and testosterone levels. The coadministration of Vac. extract and bromocriptine decreased LH and testosterone".

The study also found that Vitex agnus castus extract influences the neurotransmiters such as dopamine in regualted LH and testosterone secretion.

Furthermore, injection of Vitex agnus castus L. (Vit.) fruit extract with 1650 mg/kg tested on male mice model with the doses (65, 165, 265, 365, 465 mg/kg) injected intraperitoneally for 30 days in 5 groups of animals,  showed a decreased testosterone levels in dose depending manner in all tested mice.

The researchers also insisted that through the Radio Immuno Assay (RIA), Vit. fruit extract has an anti-androgenic effect and probably acts through the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Gonadal (HPG) axis and the side effects only appear after a long time of their usage.

Dr Jillian Stansbury, not the author of the studies said, " (due to the effects of chaste tree berry in reduced LH levels and testosterone levels ) that Vitex may improve symptoms of high testosterone levels in men".

The reduced levels of testosterone of the herbal medicine may be beneficiary for patients with high levels of testosterone induced of sexual libido, acne and abnormal prostate expression.

However, further data collection on large sample size and multi centers clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of chaste tree berry and its bioactive compounds protective effect against diseases caused by high levels of testosterone possibilities.

The Plants and Vegetables, That Detox Our Body From Chemical Toxins

Kyle J. Norton

Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), a natural product formed from gluconasturtiin in cruciferous vegetables may be the next generation of detoxified natural food against benzene, acrolein, and crotonaldehyde in cigarette smokers.

Detoxification is the process of removing toxic or harmful substances from our body.

According to statistic, thousands of new chemicals are registered for use in foods, medications, household products and lawn-care products, these types environment toxins also add to the risk of chronic illness in long term exposure.

Particularly, these chemical substances induced of developmental toxins and neurotoxins exposed to pre- or post-natal baby have never been studied.

The EWG | Environmental Working Group in the article of " A BENCHMARK INVESTIGATION OF INDUSTRIAL CHEMICALS, POLLUTANTS AND PESTICIDES IN UMBILICAL CORD BLOOD" published on July 14, 2005, wrote, “an average of 200 industrial chemicals and pollutants in umbilical cord blood from 10 babies born in August and September of 2004 in U.S. hospitals”(4)

And, "Of the 287 chemicals we detected in umbilical cord blood, we know that 180 cause cancer in humans or animals, 217 are toxic to the brain and nervous system, and 208 cause birth defects or abnormal development in animal tests".

Some researchers suggested that detoxification also include balancing the levels of antioxidants and free radicals.

Over expression of ROS species caused by toxins accumulation may precipitate the elevation of oxidative stress and cytotoxicity that can lead to healthy cells DNA alternation

In other words, increased antioxidant enzymes in production of host antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase, superoxide dismutases (SODs),..... that break down the superoxide anion into oxygen and hydrogen peroxide may decrease oxidative stress by restoring the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Other common symptoms of toxin accumulation in the body include chronic fatigue, body odor, insomnia, food or chemical sensitivities and headaches.

Cruciferous vegetables are the group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok-choy, broccoli etc.

According to the University of Pittsburgh, the phytpchemical phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) reduced level of benzene by 24.6% (P = 0.002), and acrolein by 15.1%, but had no effect on crotonaldehyde, in the study of 82 cigarette smokers.

A randomized phase II clinical trial with a crossover design conducted to evaluate the effect of 2-phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC), against toxin in cigarette smokers, suggested that 2-Phenethyl isothiocyanate (PEITC) treated mice show a reduced metabolic activation of NNK by 7.7%.
NNK is a tobacco carcinogen, 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanone is associated increased risk of lung cancer.

In support of the detoxified effect of cruciferous vegetables against body toxins, isothiocyanates from cruciferous vegetables showed to promoted Nrf2, a protein in regulated the expression of antioxidant proteins in protected cells against oxidative damage, induced production of cytoprotection by detoxification mechanisms, and excretion of both harmful substances and toxic metals.

Furthermore, in Hepa1c1c7 murine hepatoma cells study of the induction of detoxification enzymes by benzyl isothiocyanate (BITC) and its synthetic N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) conjugate (NAC-BITC), Dr. Hwang ES said, "BITC and NAC-BITC inhibited Hepa1c1c7 cell growth in a dose-dependent manner. Cell growth was 4.5~57.2% lower in Hepa1c1c7 cells treated with 0.1~10 μM BITC than in control-treated Hepa1c1c7 cells."

Taking together, there is no doubt that cruciferous vegetables having a strong effect in reduced the accumulation of toxic chemicals in the body, particularlt in cigarette smokers.

But further larger sample size and multiple studies are necessary to confirm its viability.

^^^^Coffee Drinkers, Beware of Adverse Effect of Iron Deficient Anemia, Scientists Warn

By Kyle J. Norton

Anemia is a medical condition characterized by reduced numbers of healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin that bind the oxygen for the body needs.

Iron deficiency anemia is a type of anemia caused by insufficient levels of iron, the substance that plays an essential role for production hemoglobin.

Patients with iron deficiency anemia may induce symptoms of tiredness and shortage of breath due to oxygen deficiency.

Most people believe that the condition can easily cured by intake of iron supplement. However, according to my experience, iron is hard to absorb in supplement form, even in empty stomach.

Intake of iron supplements in patients with iron deficiency anemia may experience symptoms of stomach cramps, nausea, and diarrhea.

In severe cases, iron insufficiency may facilitate symptoms of extreme fatigue, weakness, pale skin chest pain, fast heartbeat, headache, inflammation, brittle nails..... and dizziness.

Some researchers suggested that in prevention of digestive symptoms, a small amount of food intake together with the supplement may be required in some people.

Others advised that iron supplement should not taken together with high fiber foods, such as whole grains, raw vegetables, bran and foods or drinks with caffeine.

Please make sure that you do not take milk, calcium and antacids with iron supplements

More importantly, intake of iron supplement may also interact with some medicine such as tetracycline, penicillin, and ciprofloxacin as well as diminishing efficacy of drugs used for Parkinson disease and seizures.

Genetic alternation and slow, chronic blood loss within the body such as stomach peptic ulcer, a hiatal hernia, a colon polyp or colorectal cancer are the major causes of iron deficiency anemia.

According to Dr. Aime Crespo at Children's Hospital Boston, genetic mutation of deficiency of the TMPRSS6 protein is associated to the cause for the body to produce too much hepcidin, a hormone that inhibits iron absorption by the intestine.

Truly, long term diet of iron deficiency and chronic use of drug that induce gastric bleeding such as aspirin are also associated to prevalent risk factor in occurrence of iron deficiency anemia.

Coffee, a popular and social beverage all over the world, particular in the West, is a drink made from roast bean from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Dietary iron beside is an important mineral for our body to make oxygen-carrying proteins hemoglobin for red blood cells and myoglobin for muscle functioning, the mineral also is needed for wide variety of metabolic processes, including oxygen and electron transport, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) synthesis......

Coffee may interfere digestive track function in absorbed nonheme iron from dietary sources, a respectable study suggested.

According to the lead author of the study, a cup of coffee intake showed to reduce iron absorption from a hamburger meal by 39%, in compared to 64% of tea, a potent inhibitor of iron absorption.

Even more interestingly, ingested a cup of drip coffee or instant coffee with a meal composed of semipurified ingredients, rate of iron absorption was reduced from 5.88% to 1.64 and 0.97%, respectively

In the time length basic, coffee exhibited same degree of iron inhibition regardless an hour before or after the meals.

Furthermore, the authors also found that change of concentration of coffee intake may also interfere with rate of inhibition.

In the prevention of dietary consumption that induces iron deficiency, intake of iron inhibited beverage such as tea and coffee are recommended to add iron enhanced absorption foods into their diet such as ascorbic acid and meat, fish and poultry;... and reduced intake calcium.

Importantly, depletion of iron stores may only have minimum effect on enhanced iron absorption in people who follow an inadequate dietary situation, thus increased risk iron deficient anemia without even knowing it.

There is an algorithm established by the the University of Göteborg, that calculate the amount of iron absorption without injection of dietary enhancers and inhibitors.

This algorithm is based on the study used basal dose absorption of 40% in compared to different amounts of dietary factors known to influence iron absorption by measuring iron absorption from 24 complete meals with mean iron absorption in 31 subjects who served a varied whole diet labeled with heme- and nonheme-iron tracers over a period of 5 days.

However, researchers of the study also said, "This algorithm has several applications. It can be used to predict iron absorption from various diets, to estimate the effects expected by dietary modification, and to translate physiologic into dietary iron requirements from different types of diets".

The findings suggested that coffee may have inhibited effect in reduced digestive system functioning in absorption of dietary iron.

Therefore, people with iron deficient anemia should take only coffee with an extra portion of iron enhancers in their meal.

People who drink too much coffee may want to reduce numbers of cup per day.

Celery and Celery Seeds in Suppression of Arthritis

By Kyle J. Norton, Master of Nutrition

Celery may be used as natural food therapy in suppressed Arthritis Diseases in induction of  acute and chronic painful or inflammatory symptoms, some scientists suggested.

Arthritis is a class of over 100 medical conditions, affecting people of all ages, sexes and races.

In aging population, most common cause of arthritis is the degeneration of cartilage, the slick, cushioning surface on the ends of bones that has bee worn away, causing bone rubs against bone, in induction of pain, swelling and stiffness.

Depending to severity of osteoarthritis, patients may experience symptoms that surround the joints in hands, knees, hips and spine, such as pain in the joint during or after movement, muscle and feet tenderness, stiffness, loss of flexibility. ... and grating sensation.

The other most common types of arthritis is Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that is a long-term autoimmune disorder, inducing warm, swollen, and painful joints.

According to statistic, approximately, 50 million adults and 300,000 children have some forms or types of arthritis.

The CDC statistic from 2013–2015, stated that an estimated 54.4 million US adults (22.7%) annually have ever been told by a doctor that they have some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia(4).

The prevalent risk factor is also depended to where you live. For example, the percentage of adults with arthritis varies by state, ranging from 17.2% in Hawaii to 33.6% in West Virginia in 2015(4).r

The John Hopskins arthritis center suggested, " Data from 32,322 adults in 11 states from the 1998 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS), a health survey given annually in the United States, indicates that adults with arthritis report significantly greater HRQL impairment compared to adults without arthritis"(5).

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belongings to the family Apiaceae. The food or vegetable is cultivated all around the globe for commercial profits..

Celery can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

According to recent study, celery seed extract (CSE) processed a strong effect in suppressing arthritis symptoms in a model of polyarthritis without interaction to medication intake. in comparison to aspirin, ibuprofen, and naproxen

Dr. Powanda MC, the lead researcher said, " unlike many dietary supplements, the available data suggest that CSE does not significantly affect the p450 enzyme systems( function in interaction with medication intake) and thus is less likely to alter the metabolism of drugs the individual may be taking"

The over the counter (OTC) oral remedies for arthritis and rheumatism classified celery seed extracts is more effective than ibuprofen in anti-arthritic assay without causing gastric bleeding.

However, treatment of arthritis is ranged from almost zero to highly effective depending to a certain class of products.

Therefore, for maximum effect, types of celery seed extract (CSE) chosen should only be prescribed by related  field specialist.

In support of the above differentiation, the Prince of Songkla University conducted an experimenter by applying A. graveolens (AGE), a bioactive compound isolated from celery seed against liver oxidative stress in adjuvant-induced arthritic rat model.

The results showed that oral administration of AGE (250, 500, and 1,000 mg/kg) for 24 consecutive days reduced symptoms of arthritis through reduced liver oxidative stress and enhanced liver antioxidant properties including host antioxidant enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GPx) and superoxide dismutase (SOD).

Taking altogether, intake of celery may be effective in ameliorated symptoms of arthritis through binding to the expression of proinflammatory cytokins.

However, further data collection on large sample size and multi centers clinical studies performed with human consumption during the course of the investigation will be necessary to complete the picture of celery and its bioactive compounds protective effect against arthritis possibilities.
