The use of plants for healing purposes have been predated long before the existence of  modern medicine. Herbal plants have formed a fundamental sources for conventional medicine in discovery of single ingredient medication, including aspirin (from willow bark), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy)......

Alfalfa is a flowering plant in the genus Medicago, belonging to the family Fabaceae, cultivated all over the world as hay for cattle feeding, and used in traditional medicine over thousands of year to treat high cholesterol, asthma, osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes, enhanced digestive system, bleeding disorder, kidney and urinary tract infection, etc.
North American aboriginals have used Alfalfa seed as food in making bread and mush.

Inflammation is the natural response of immune system in regulated the production of white blood cells for protection against foreign organisms.

Alfalfa expressed significant anti-inflammatory effect through inhibited production of proinflammatory cytokins during injure, foreign invasion and free radical domino's action, etc....

According to the University of Maryland, novel pectic polysaccharide from alfalfa(Medicago sativa L.) stem, showed significant anti-inflammatory effect against mRNA expressions of the pro-inflammatory cytokine genes, especially for IL-1β antibody.

The chloroform extract of alfalfa aerial part also is found to inhibit the function of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria in stimulated immune responses in induced inflammation and suppressed LPS-mediated activation of the extracellular signal-regulated the proinflammatory and prothrombotic responses of nuclear factor kappa-B pathway.

The cinnamic acid derivatives and fatty acids active constituents of the extract have also been found to be effective in ameliorated inflammation and immune response through inhibition of nitric oxide (NO), tumor necrosis factor (TNF-α), and prostaglandin E2 (PGE2) all involved in the development of inflammatory diseases.

Taking together, Alfalfa no doubt has processed an anti inflammatory effects by inhibited free radicals, proinflammatory cytokins and hormone involved the development of inflammatory and auto immune diseases.

Whole food(herbal medicine) used as medical treatment,  linking health benefits in prevention, management and treatment of diseases has induced much interests in today renowned scientists.
Many researchers has raised a question of their's effectiveness because of quality of the herbs due to geographic differences, time of grown and harvest, etc. I do believe that these questions can only be answered by experience herbalist.

Whole herbal medicine cinnamon may be used as functional food for treatment of cognitive impairment, a renown study suggested.

According to Hoseo University, water extracts of Cinnamomum cassia Blume bark (CCB; Lauraceae), effectively prevent the cognitive dysfunction through the prevention of formation of amyloid-β in induced cell death and toxicity.

Cognitive impairment is considered as an early stage of dementia, affecting memory, language, thinking and judgment

Cinnamon is a spice derived from the inner bark of tree, native to South East Asia, of over 300 species of the genus Cinnamomum, belonging to the familyLauraceae, use in herbal and traditional medicine as anti-fungal and bacteria level, to improve reproductive organ, prevent flatulence and intestinal cramping, and to treat indigestion, diarrhea, bad breath, headache, migraine, etc.

Administered orally of Cinnamomum zeylanicum (CZ) for a period of 21 days in animal model induced cognitive improvement through inhibition of certain extent of oxidative stress.

In AD mice model, cinnamon reduced accumulation of soluble oligomeric assemblies of β-amyloid polypeptide (Aβ) by inhibition of the formation of toxic Aβ oligoemers induced toxicity of Aβ on neuronal cells, thus reducing the risk of accumulation of plagues which is the early signed of AD development.

Also in animal study, the standardized lyophilized aqueous extract of cinnamon bark (LCZE) testing on learning and memory in rodents at 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg, p.o. dose levels against streptozotocin (STZ)-induced memory impairment, exhibited an improved discrimination between a familiar object and a novel object and function of neurotransmitters activity and reduced oxidative stress parameters in both brain parts.

Cinnamon and its chemical components may be beneficiary for patients in early state of Cognitive impairment. The use of the herbal medicine should be taken with care as overdoses may induce toxicity.

If you expect that herbal medicine will ease symptoms of your illness immediately, you will be disappointed. Symptoms of the diseases can only be eased gradually, depending to stage of the treatment which directly address to the cause of the disease.

Intake of kidney bean in different varieties may reduce risk and enhance treatment of inflammatory diseases, including colitis, a recent study suggested.

Kidney beans with kidney shape, strong flavor and color of reddish brown in nature are often the excellent dietary selection with no cholesterol, but a good source of protein and minerals.

According to the University of Guelph, mices fed with red and white kidney bean display a significantly anti inflammatory effects in colitis induced by dextran sodium sulphate (DSS) exposure.

The result of anti colitis activity is attributed to the potency in reduced colon tissue protein levels through ameliorated disease severity and proinflammatory mediator expression, protected further colonic damage,.....

In biochemical approaches including reporter gene assays, immunoprecipitation, kinase assays, and immunoblot analyses, ethanol extract (Pa-EE) of Phaseolus angularis was found to exert anti inflammatory effects by suppressed the release of Prostaglandin E2 (PGE(2)) and NO in Lipopolysaccharide,..........in activation of infection and inflammation.

Furthermore, the phaseolus angularis ethanol extract (Pa-EE) strongly reduced function of ipopolysaccharide in induced the mRNA expression of formation of enzymes in response to cytokines and in production of prostaglandins involved activation of infectious and inflammatory immune response.

Orally administered Pa-EE clearly decreases the ratio of ethanol/hydrogen chloride(EtOH/HCl)-induced gastritis in mice, through protection of gastric surface tissues against further damage.

In fact, the study in differentiate the efficacy of bean hull antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activities, insisted, "Anti-inflammatory activity of bean hulls was dependent on their phenolic content and antioxidant activity that were significantly affected by cultivar and extracting solvent".

Taking together, Kidney beans (Phaseolus) and their family may be used as  therapeutic functional foods in improved immunomodutory activity against inflammatory diseases.

"Let foods be your medicine and let medicines be your food", using foods as medication has been a dream of many scholars and scientists over past many centuries. In order to achieve these, consumption of whole food medicine must accompany with moderated exercise, change of diet and life style.

Recent study conducted by the University of Lund, fermented brussels sprouts, one of the member of cruciferous vegetables binded the secretion of bile acids from the liver by increased 25% of the fecal dry weight.

The study also confirmed that in various vegetables (carrots, rutabagas, peas, green beans and Brussels sprouts), total excretion of bile acids was reduced only when Brussels sprouts were added.

Cruciferous vegetables are the group of vegetables belonging to the family Brassicaceae, including cauliflower, cabbage, cress, bok choy, broccoli etc.

Bile acids secreted by the liver with purpose in removing excess cholesterol in the body and aiding intestinal digestion.

Binding bile acids in gastrointestinal track is the function of preventing the reabsorption from the gut with an aim to lower the levels of cholesterol.

In vitro, the study of cruciferous vegetables also suggested that consumed regularly after steam cooking, would lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer and improve public health, through lowered recirculation of bile acids resulting in utilization of cholesterol to synthesize bile acid and reduced fat absorption even more.

Dr. Kahlon TS, the lead author of the study said, " relative to cholestyramine, (a cholesterol-lowering, bileacid binding drug) in vitro bile acidbinding on dry matter basis was for the collard greens, kale, and mustard greens, 13%; broccoli, 10%; Brussels sprouts and spinach, 8%; green bell pepper, 7%; and cabbage, 5%" and (the levels of effectiveness can be classified as follow)"collardgreens = kale = mustard greens > broccoli > Brussels sprouts = spinach = green bell pepper > cabbage".

Furthermore, according to the article published in the science research, besides steam cooking showed to significantly improved bile acid binding ofgreen/leafy vegetables; sautéing also significantly improved  bile acid binding of mustard greens, kale, broccoli, cabbage and green bell pepper compared with steaming, boiling or raw (uncooked).

In fact, Collard greens exhibited significantly higher bile acid binding by steaming compared with sautéing, boiling or raw in comparison to other cruciferous vegetables.

Therefore, it is safe to insist that intake of cruciferous vegetables regularly can lower the risk of cardiovascular disease and cancer, through lowering cholesterol absorption and reabsorption.

Asparagus may be a potential whole food medicine for reduced risk and treatment of neuro degenerative disease, a renowned institution suggested.

Methanol extract from Asparagus cochinchinensi, in vivo and in vitro is found to exhibit neuroprotective effects through activation of the Shp-2, antibody and ErK1/2 Akt and Akt involved the cell apoptosis, cell proliferation.

Asparagus is a flowering plant belong to species the genus Asparagus, native to the western coasts of northern Spain, north to Ireland, Great Britain, and northwest Germany, northern Africa and western Asia. Asparagus has been used from early times as a vegetable and medicine, because of its delicate flavour and diuretic properties.

In animal study of neurodegenerative disorders involved Alzheimer's disease (AD) , biological stresses, such as oxidative and inflammatory stress, induced neural cell damage, asparagus extract (ETAS) exerted anti neuroprotective effects, through expression of mRNAs in information transfer of DNA factors in exerted cytoprotective and anti-apoptotic functions against death of neuronal cells and early cognitive impairment.
Dr. Sakurai T, the lead researcher in the study insisted, this efficacy may be contributed by the extract in attenuated neuro-cell damage through improved hippocampus function in expression of memory.

Furthermore, other chemical compound isolated roots of Asparagus cochinchinensis may be also effective in treating cognitive impairment by ameliorated neuroinflammation through decreased production of free radical NO and suppressed microglia cells activation cause of neuronal cell death.

Taking altogether, there is no doubt that asparagus extract may be a potential agent for delay neuro degenerative disease through improved function of  hippocampal regions associated with the learning and memory functions,  increased neurotransmitter activity, attenuated neuro inflammatory expression and inhibited oxidative stress induced free radical in damage of neuro cells.

Intake of celery or supplement showed to reduce progression and treatment of gastric ulcer.

According to the King Saud University, celery [Apium graveolens L. (Apiaceae/Umbelliferae)], celery supplement at doses of 250 and 500 mg/kg body weight, enhanced the protection of gastric wall mucus (GWM),  in increased stomach protection against the models used for ulcerogenesis.

Dr. Powanda MC, the lead researcher said, " Acute toxicity test revealed no deleterious or toxic symptoms or mortality over a period of 14 days. .....and (showed) a large margin of safety and "The results suggest that Apium graveolens extract significantly protects the gastric mucosa and suppresses the basal gastric secretion in rats, possibly through its antioxidant potential".

Celery is a species of Apium graveolens, belonging to the family Apiaceae, cultivated all around the globe as a vegetable. It can grow to 1/2 m tall with stalks (leaf on the top) arranging in a conical shape joined at a common base.

In support of the above analysis, celery Seed Extract (CSE), also showed to protect against and/or reduce gastric irritation caused by NSAIDs, as well as act synergistically with them to reduce inflammation without induced medication interaction of enzyme systems.

Furthermore, the methanolic extract and  aqueous extracts used at 300 mg kg(-1) dose, exhibited a highly significant inhibition of gastric lesions in comparison the conventional omeprazole, in dose-dependent for both aerial part of celery.

Taking altogether, intake of celery is associated to meliorate the progression and treatment of gastric ulcer, but oral of celery supplement should be taken with care.

Andrographis paniculata is also known as Andrographis, is a herbaceous plant, genus Andrographis, belonging to the family Acanthaceae, native to India and Sri Lanka, used in traditional Siddha and Ayurvedic in treating the common cold, flu, upper respiratory infections, infectious diseases, diarrhea, dysentery, cholera, pneumonia,.. .....

Wound healing is a natural response to restore injured tissues.

Andrographis paniculata leaf showed to process a significant wound healing effect in restoring injured tissues, a mentioned institute suggested.

According to the Universiti Teknologi MARA, topical application of Andrographis paniculata exerted a strong effect on the rate of wound enclosure with markedly less scar width and contained large amounts of fibroblast proliferation.

In a study of wound created in four groups of rat in posterior neck region. Blank placebo applied topically to the wounds of Group 1 and Groups 2 and 3 dressed with placebo containing 5% and 10% extracts of A. paniculata, groups treated with topical showed a rate of wound healing significantly accelerated in the wound dressed compared to placebo group.

The wound healing is also increased collagen and less formation of new blood vessels with absence of inflammatory cells.

Other study, in the evaluation of the effects of andrographis wound healing activity of Swiss Wistar strain rats with either sex with  topical application, 2%w/w ointment of ethanol extract and petroleum ether extract prepared in 2% w/w PEG-4000 in comparison to the left untreated control group, treatment groups showed a faster rate of complete healing in day 12 after topical application with wound contractions in petroleum ether extract, ethanolic extract were at 10.17 and 16.33, respectively.

Dr. Arnabaditya Mohanty, the lead authors in the joint study said, "Andrographis peniculata ethanolic extract possesses better wound healing property in comparison to control and also with petroleum ether extract".

Taking together, topical application of Andrographis paniculata leaf and extract may be used as a wound healing agent in accelerately restored injured tissues with lesser scar without induced adverse effects.
