Cruciferous Vegetables in the Prevention of Colon Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Colon formed part of the digestive system including a large intestine that connects to the small intestines and rectum plays a critical role to reabsorb fluids and process waste products from the body and prepare for its elimination through the rectum.

Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progresses cancer and in a predictable way. The disease is the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Most cases of primary colon cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At the early stage. most patients with colon cancer do not experience any symptoms.

However, at the advanced stage, the tumor not only can spread to other healthy tissue and organs a distance away through blood and fluid circulation but also suppress the nearby tissue and nerve cells.

The progression of colon cancer at this stage not only induces symptoms of the change in bowel habits, the change in the consistency of your stool, that lasts longer than four weeks but also causes rectal bleeding and persistent abdominal severe pain.

According to the statistic by the American Cancer Society, in the US, there are
97,220 new cases of colon cancer diagnosed in 2018. The lifetime risk of developing colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

The 5-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%. About 39% of patients are diagnosed at this early stage.

Researchers do not know the exact causes of the disease. But they do know a history of polyps, ethnicity, high-fat diet and low fiber, the increase in age, the long-term infection of colon diseases are some of the prevalent factors associated with the onset and progression of colon cancer.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the effects of diets containing cruciferous vegetables on colon cancer risk.

According to the experiments of
* Expt. 1, with rats that were fed a vegetable-free (basal) diet or diets containing different lyophilized cruciferous vegetables in concentrations between 4 and 10%.

* Expt. 2, rats that were fed the basal diet or diets containing 10-22.6% fresh cruciferous vegetables. Diets were fed for 2 wk (Expt. 1) or 3 wk (Expt. 2) before and 7 wk (Expt. 1) or 12 wk (Expt. 2) after administration of the colon carcinogen 1,2-dimethylhydrazine.

Moreover, rats fed fresh vegetables were also injected with a low dose of carcinogen 18-24 h prior to termination.

According to the dietary information,
* Groups fed lyophilized vegetables did not differ in aberrant crypt foci (ACF), sialomucin-producing foci, or mucin-depleted foci (MDF) numbers.

Furthermore, all fresh vegetable diets significantly decreased ACF (approximately 40%) and MDF numbers and the activities of the hepatic phase I enzyme CYP2E1 involved in drugs and alcohol metabolism did not differ among groups in either experiment.

Additionally, the levels of liver glutathione S-transferase (GST) and quinone reductase activities associated with detoxification did not differ among groups fed fresh vegetables, whereas the lyophilized cabbage diets decreased GST activity, compared with the basal diet.

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for reducing the risk of colon cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids, the Anti-Prostate Cancer Antioxidants

By Kyle J. Norton

The prostate gland is a gland that makes and stores semen, located below the bladder and surrounds the tube that carries urine out of your body.

The most common diseases associated with the aging prostate gland are prostatic hyperplasia(BPH).

Benign prostatic hyperplasia(BPH) is a condition caused by the increased number of cells of the prostate gland, leading to partial, or sometimes virtually complete obstruction of the urinary tract.

According to statistics, BPH commonly starts at the age of 30 and symptoms usually can not be realized until the age of 50.

More than half of men between the age of 60-70 are experience symptoms of BPH and only 10% is required treatment.

Prostate cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the prostate tissue. In the later stage, the cancerous cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue or organ.

Inherited genes such as RNASEL and BRCA1 and BRCA2 have been found to increase the risk of prostate cancer

Researchers do not know what causes prostate cancer.

However, there are a number of factors that may increase the risk of prostate cancer onset, including age, family history, obesity,... an unhealthy diet.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing. Prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

According to the statistic in Canada, prostate cancer is the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men. in Canada.
In 2017(2)
* 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer. This represents 21% of all new cancer cases in men in 2017.
* 4,100 men died from prostate cancer. This represents 10% of all cancer deaths in men in 2017.
* On average, 58 Canadian men were diagnosed with prostate cancer every day.
* On average, 11 Canadian men died from prostate cancer every day.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of prostate diseases, researchers examined the efficiency of α-linolenic acid (ALA) is an n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) uptake from a vegetable oil source in a prostate cancer animal model.

According to the tested analysis of Pten-knockout mice which were given low-ALA (L-ALA, 2.5%) and high-ALA (H-ALA, 7.5%) diets,
* Dietary ALA triggered significant increases in ALA, EPA, docosapentaenoic acid (DPA) and DHA levels and a significant decrease in arachidonic acid levels during the mice's growth stage.

* More precisely, a dose-dependent effect was observed for ALA, EPA, and DPA, but not DHA.

* The average prostate weights in the L-ALA and H-ALA groups were lower than those in the control and n-6 groups, and similar to those in the EPA and n-3 groups.

In other words, α-linolenic acid (ALA) demonstrated significant prostate protective effects against the enlarged prostate, one of the risks of prostate cancer.

Collectively, researchers said, "Our data suggest that dietary supplementation with ALA is an efficient means of improving n-3 LCPUFAs in vivo, and it has a biologically effective role to play in prostate cancer, similar to that of fish oils".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ashwagandha Showed a Strong Anti-Fungal Activity Against Candida Albicans

By Kyle J. Norton

Fungal infection is a common disease caused by an overgrowth of fungus.

In other words, it is the condition in which the immune system that protects the body against microorganisms has been overwhelming by the overgrowth of fungus.

Candida albicans are members of a large group of microorganisms whose cells contain complex structures enclosed within the membranes, including yeasts, fungi, and molds that live among the gut flora in the human mouth and gastrointestinal tract.

In fact, under normal circumstances, Candida albicans that does not cause harmful effects, but overgrowth results in candidiasis. Non-albicans Candida (NAC) species cause 35-65% of all candidaemias in the general patient population.

According to the joint study, in many cases, biofilm (microorganisms with cells stick to each other on a surface) formation gene mutations are often associated with increased Candida resistance toward antifungal agents.

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

On finding a potent compound that processes the infectious diseases, researchers examined the effects of withanamides in W. somnifera anti-fungal activity on Candida albicans (C. albicans).

The study included 9 vaginal samples collected using the sterile swap and Falcon tube by the gynecological specialists.

Based on the results of the tested analysis, withanamides incubated with C. Albicans showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) against C. Albicans, equivalent to 50 ppm to 250 ppm.

In other words, withanamides extract isolated from W. somnifera exhibited strong activity against infectious disease caused by C. Albicans.

After taking into account of con and cofounders, researchers wrote, "The results of this study showed that the antifungal activity of wind cheese against C. Albicans is good, so it can be used as a drug to treat infections caused by C. Albicans".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha processes abundantly withanamides may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of infectious diseases associated with C. Albicans,  pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica), the Potential Anti-Cancer Functional Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Cancers are the second leading cause of death worldwide besides heart diseases.

The most common types of cancer in Canada include lung, colorectal, breast and prostate cancers. And these 4 cancers are account for half of all cancers diagnosed in Canada.

Believe it or not, 1/4 of cancers death are due to lung cancer.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Compared to all cancers, lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

The most common risk factors associated with the onset of cancer age, excessive alcohol drinking, exposure to cancer causing-substances, diseases associated with chronic inflammation, unhealthy diet, hormones therapy, use of immunosuppression are some of the prevalent factors involved the onset of cancer.

However, most people with some of the aforementioned risk factors have never developed cancer.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the potential health-promoting chemical constituents of the fruits of F. Carica anti-inflammatory and anti-proliferative activity.

According to the chemical analysis,
* Four new structurally diverse prenylated isoflavone derivatives, ficucaricones A-D (1-4), along with 12 known analogs (5-16) were separated from the fruits of F. Carica.

* Prenylated isoflavone derivatives (1-16) displayed remarkable inflammatory inhibitory effects against nitric oxide (NO) production with the IC50 values ranging from 0.89 ± 0.05 to 8.49 ± 0.18 μM, comparable to that of the positive control (hydrocortisone).

* All newly discovered compounds 1-16 also exerted pronounced antiproliferative activities against diverse human cancer cell lines in vitro, holding the IC50 values ranging from 0.18 ± 0.03 to 18.76 ± 0.09 μM.

Collectively, researchers said, "the isolation and characterization of these prenylated isoflavone derivatives possessing remarkable anti-inflammatory effects and antiproliferative activities could be meaningful to the discovery of new anti-inflammatory and antitumor agents".

Taken altogether, regular consumption of the fruits of F. carica may prevent the occurrence of inflammatory diseases and tumors, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids DO NOT Exert Anti-Inflammatory Activity on Colon Cancer Surgery

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon formed part of the digestive system also is known as the large bowel or large intestine with a function to reabsorb fluids and process and secret waste products from the body.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the colon due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At this stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

Colon cancer is one most slow-growing cancer compared to other cancers. In some patients, colon cancer may exist in the colon more than 20 years before it is discovered. Therefore, only 39% of colon cancer is diagnosed in the early stage, which orchestrates more incidences of death compared to other cancers.

After penetrating deeper into the colon layer, the cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the fluids and blood circulation.

At this stage, the increased size of the tumor may suppress the nearby tissue, organs or nerve cells causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

Most common colon cancer metastasis are the lungs, liver.

According to the epidemiological studies, the most common risk factors of colon cancer are older
age, ethnicity, personal and family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, inflammatory intestinal conditions.

According to the statistic provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 101,420 new cases of colon cancer will be diagnosed. Colon cancer also causes the death of 51,020 deaths. during 2019.

The lifetime risk associated with the onset of colorectal cancer is 1 in 22 (4.49%) for men and 1 in 24 (4.15%) for women.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of perioperative intravenous n-3 PUFAs on inflammatory cytokines in colon cancer surgery.

A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial included 44 patients undergoing elective colon resection for nonmetastasized cancer that were randomly assigned to 2 intravenous n-3 PUFA (n=21)or saline (n=23) control infusions the night before and the morning after surgery.

Patient and operation characteristics were equal between groups, except for open resection (saline n = 5 compared with n-3 PUFA n = 0, P = 0.056)
Based on the evidence from the experiment,
* Ex-vivo, pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 after LPS stimulation was significantly higher in the n-3 PUFA group on the first day after surgery (P = 0.014), but not different at the second day after surgery (P = 0.467).

* White blood cell count was higher in the n-3 PUFA group on the fourth day after surgery (P = 0.029).

* There were more patients with infectious complications in the n-3 PUFA group (8 compared with 3, P = 0.036).

* There were no overall differences in serum IL-6, IL-10, C-reactive protein, and length of stay.

* The administration of n-3 PUFAs resulted in rapid increases in leukocyte membrane n-3 PUFA content.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " In the n-3 PUFA group a clear relation with serum and LPS-stimulated cytokines was not found but, unexpectedly, more infectious complications occurred ".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids doe not show anti-inflammatory activity on patients undergoing elective colon resection for nonmetastasized cancer,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Processes immune-Modulatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system included the thymus and bone marrow, as well as secondary lymphatic tissues including spleen, tonsils, lymph vessels, lymph nodes, adenoids, skin, and liver, is the body's defense against infectious organisms and foreign invaders.

The immune dysfunction can be classified into
* The underactive immune system is also known as the weakened immune system. People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections.

* The overactive immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system that attacks the body tissues.

The immunomodulatory effect is a process in which the immune function is modulated to the needs of the body.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune macrophages, the first line of defense stimulates the production of blood palette to cover the wound or injury and pro-inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off pathogens before they can enter the body to multiply.

Most cases of infection are stopped at the acute phase, depending on the size and penetration of the wound.

Most common symptoms of acute inflammation occurred with a short period of time such as hours is a pain, redness, immobility, swelling, and heat.

Conventionally, depending on the types of acute inflammation, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) may be prescribed to alleviate the pain by counteracting an enzyme that contributes to inflammation.

However, if the immune system for whatever reason such as in people with a weakened immune system can not destroy the foreign invaders in the set period of time (3-8 weeks), it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation.

Low-grade inflammation over time has been found to destroy cells and tissues in the affected area or organ, inducing chronic inflammatory disease, including diabetes, arthritis, and cardiovascular disease.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

On finding a potent compound which modulatory immune response, researchers examined the ashwagandha WS immunomodulatory effect.

According to the searching of the related studies and trials on Databases- DPED, UNPD, PubChem, Binding DB, ChEMBL, KEGG, and STRING, WS immune showed an immunomodulatory capability of regulating 15 immune system pathways.

Additionally, WS also exerted the immunomodulatory effect by targeting16 proteins and protein-protein interactions.

Chemical analysis also suggested that the efficacy WS in immunomodulation was also attributed to
the potential of withanolide-phytosterol combination and seven novel bioactive-immune target combinations.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The study elucidated an in silico molecular mechanism of immunomodulation of WS. It unveils the potential of withanolide-phytosterol combination to achieve better immunomodulation. Experimental validation of the network findings would aid in understanding the rationale behind WS immunomodulation as well as aid in bioactive formulation based drug discovery.".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for immune-modulation, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Broccoli Kills Primary Effusion Lymphoma (PEL) Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Lymphoma is a medical and chronic condition associated with abnormal growth of lymphocytes, a type of white blood cells of the immune system that fights infection.

Lymphocytes included natural killer cells T cells and B cells are found in the lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, bone marrow, and other parts of the body.

According to the statistics, in the US, this year, approximately, 8,000 people will be diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma, leading to the death of 1,000 patients with the disease.

Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas are the most common types of lymphoma

According to statistics provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, in the US, approximately over 1,30,000 people are either living with or are in remission from, leukemia, lymphoma or myeloma, causing the death of over 9% of all cancer death in 2018.

60 years of age and over, weakened immune system, previous exposure to toxic chemicals, previous chemotherapy or radiation therapy are some of the most common prevalent factors of lymphoma.

Interestingly, most people with some of the above risk factors have never developed lymphoma.
Believe it or not, Hodgkin's lymphoma is treatable, especially in its early stages. The 5-year survival rate for all patients diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma is 92%.

Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL) is a rare subtype of non-Hodgkin's B-cell lymphoma caused by Kaposi's sarcoma-associated herpesvirus (KSHV) in immunosuppressed patients.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticancer activity, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), on primary effusion lymphoma (PEL).

According to the analysis, SFN decreased the viability of KSHV-infected PEL cells compared to KSHV-uninfected B-lymphoma cells.

SFN demonstrated the anti-proliferative effects on PEL cells by activating caspases involved in cancer cell apoptosis.

Furthermore, SFN also inhibited the activated p38MAPK and AKT signaling to induce apoptosis against cancer cell survival and proliferation.

Collectively, researchers said, "the anti-proliferative effects of SFN indicate its potential as a new substance for the treatment of PEL".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed a high amount of SFN, may be considered a functional food for the treatment of Primary effusion lymphoma (PEL),  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
