Tocopherols Inhibits the Onset of Diabetes

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Most common types of diabetes are
* Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes, the most common form diabetes found in children is a condition in which the pancreas does not produce any insulin. The most common form of type 1 diabetes is caused by genetic mutation and some viruses.

As of today, there is no cure for type 1 diabetes. Treatment is focusing on managing blood sugar levels with insulin injection, diet, and lifestyle change.

* Type 2 diabetes is a medical condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose due to either cell in pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

The most common symptoms of type 2 diabetes are an increased thirst that won't stop with water intake, increased hunger (especially after eating), dry mouth, frequent urination, and unintentional weight loss.

* Latent autoimmune diabetes in adults (LADA), similar to type 1 diabetes, is a slow-progressing form of autoimmune diabetes. The disease is caused by the pancreas inability to produce enough insulin, because of slowly die-off of insulin-producing cells in the pancreas.

LADA is also known as type 1.5 diabetes because the disease has characteristics of both type 1 (autoimmune in nature) and type 2 diabetes.

Therefore, LADA shares the same risk factors and symptoms similar to those types 1 and 2 diabetes.

* Gestational diabetes is a form of diabetes that can occur during pregnancy, affecting between 3% and 20% of pregnant women.

Women with gestational diabetes are at an increased risk of type 2 diabetes in later life.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage their diabetes properly.

Hyperglycemia, a hallmark of diabetes has been found to induce diabetics complications, including neuropathy, nephropathy, and retinopathy.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined cross-sectional relations of dietary intakes and plasma concentrations of antioxidants with glucose metabolism in a high-risk population.

The study included the subjects that were 81 male and 101 female first- and second-degree, nondiabetic relatives of patients with type 2 diabetes with Antioxidant intake data that were based on 3-d food records.

According to the analysis of subjects taking supplements containing beta-carotene or alpha-tocopherol
In men,
* Dietary carotenoids were inversely associated with fasting plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05), plasma beta-carotene concentrations were inversely associated with insulin resistance (P = 0.003),

* Dietary lycopene was directly related to baseline serum concentrations of nonesterified fatty acids (P = 0.034).

* In women, dietary alpha-tocopherol and plasma beta-carotene concentrations were inversely and directly associated, respectively, with fasting plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05).

In both sexes, cholesterol-adjusted alpha-tocopherol concentrations were directly associated with 2-h plasma glucose concentrations (P < 0.05).

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "The data suggest an advantageous association of carotenoids, which are markers of fruit and vegetable intake, with glucose metabolism in men at high risk of type 2 diabetes.".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used alone or combined with beta-carotene may be considered adjunct therapies in the management of diabetes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Lower Dose of Cabbage Kills Breast Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases in which a group of cells growing and multiplying disorderly and uncontrollably in our body.

The women's breasts are made up of specialized tissue that produces milk (glandular tissue) and fatty tissue. The size of a women's breast is totally determined by the amount of fat.

Breast cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the breast tissue.

Most cases of breast cancer start in the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the breast tissue before spreading into deeper layers of the breast.

Breast cancer is first noticed as a painless lump in the breast or armpit and most often discovered by the women themselves.

In some cases, breast cancer can also be noticed by the woman partner or during the doctor's routine physical exam.

However, breast skin irritation or dimpling, nipple pain, nipple retraction (turning inward), redness and scaliness that cannot be healed within 3 weeks are also the signs and symptoms of breast cancer.

In Canada, according to the statistic, 11% of women will develop breast cancer by the time they reach 90 years of age.

Just about 20% of breast cancers in Canada are diagnosed in women under 50, while almost 30% are diagnosed in women over 70 years of age.

Breast cancer diagnosed in the early stage have a 5-year survival rate of 100%. Therefore, women at a higher risk of breast cancer should examine their breasts at least once a month for preventive measures.

Cabbage is a species of Brassica oleracea belongings to the family Brassicaceae (or Cruciferae), native to the Mediterranean region along the seacoast. The veggie has a short stem of which is crowded a mass of leaves, usually green but in some varieties, it may be red or purplish.

With an aim to find a natural food for the prevention of cancers, researchers compared the cruciferous vegetable extracts from freeze-dried cabbage (FDC), freeze-dried fermented cabbage (FDS), and acidified Brussels sprouts (ABS) on human breast cancer cell lines.

According to the tested differentiation, the experimental extracts bounded with low affinity to the ER, and the relative binding affinity is estradiol > FDS > FDC > ABS and reduced 1 nM estradiol-induced MCF-7 cell proliferation at low concentrations (5-25 ng/mL).

Interestingly, extracts at 25 ng/mL inhibited breast cancer markers estradiol-induced pS2 mRNA expression, but at higher extract concentrations (50 ng/mL-25 microg/mL), the extracts increased proliferation in MCF-7 cells and pS2 gene at the higher extract concentrations (0.25-25 microg/mL).

In other words, at low concentrations which are in the range from 5-25 ng/mL, freeze-dried cabbage (FDC), freeze-dried fermented cabbage (FDS) inhibited the MCF breast cancer cell proliferation.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, "This study demonstrates that cruciferous vegetable extracts act bifunctionally, like an antiestrogen at low concentrations and an estrogen agonist at high concentrations.".

Taken altogether, cabbage may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of breast cancer at low doses, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of SFN in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Healthy Food Broccoli Exerts Bronchoprotective Response in Asthmatics

By Kyle J. Norton

The lungs formed part of the respiratory symptoms, sare a pair of spongy, air-filled organs located on either side of the chest (thorax). The organ plays a critical role in inhaling oxygens to the body and exhaling carbon dioxide from the body.

Respiratory disease is medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues including inflammatory lung disease, obstructive lung diseases, restrictive lung diseases, respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves, and muscles breathing,...

Bronchoconstriction is the constriction of the airways in the lungs associated with asthmatic attacks due to the tightening of surrounding smooth muscle, with consequent coughing, wheezing, and shortness of breath.

The most common symptoms of asthma are episodes of wheezing, coughing, chest tightness, and shortness of breath, and reversible airflow obstruction and bronchospasm.

Asthma attack in most cases is triggered by exposure to various irritants and substances that trigger allergies (allergens). However, genetic preposition and family history are also found in patients with asthma.

Asthma not only interferes with daily activities and also can lead to a life-threatening asthma attack. Treatment of asthma is to reduce the frequent episode and severity of the attacks.

According to the statistics provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the US, 1 in 13 people have asthma. In other words, over 26 million Americans have asthma and half of that is children.

Believe it or not, African-Americans in the U.S. die from asthma at a higher rate than people of other races or ethnicities.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention and treatment of respiratory diseases, researchers examined the effects of bioactive compound sulforaphane derived from broccoli on the pulmonary bronchoconstrictor responses to MCh challenge and the responses to deep inspiration (DI), in asthmatic patients.

In a total of 45 moderate asthmatics that are administered 100 μmol sulforaphane daily for 14 days, researchers found that
* Sulforaphane ameliorated the bronchoconstrictor effects of MCh on FEV1 significantly (on average by 21 %; p = 0.01) in 60 % of these asthmatics.

* However, according to the documenting the great heterogeneity of the responsiveness of these individuals to sulforaphane, sulforaphane aggravated the bronchoconstrictor effects of MCh on only 20% of patients and no effect on the same numbers of patients.

The efficacy of sulforaphane in bronchoprotective response was attributed to the activation of the activities of Nrf2-regulated antioxidant and anti-inflammatory genes.

In other words, sulforaphane blocks only some types of bronchoconstrictor hyperresponsiveness.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "in asthmatics, sulforaphane treatment resulted in a significant reduction in specific airway resistance and also increased small airway luminal area and airway trapping modestly but significantly.".
Taken altogether,  broccoli may be considered a remedy for the treatment of bronchoconstrictor hyperresponsiveness,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Suppresses the Onset of Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radical or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress presented in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

Free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals with antioxidative stress activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of osteoporosis, researchers examined the chemopreventive activity of the naturally occurring γ-tocopherol-rich mixture of tocopherols (γ-TmT) in early stages of estrogen-induced mammary hyperplasia in ACI rats.

The study included ACI rats induced mammary carcinogenesis following by the implanted with 9 mg of 17β-estradiol (E2) in silastic tubings and fed with control or 0.3% γ-TmT diet for 1, 3, 7, and 14 days.

According to the results of the analysis,
* γ-TmT treatment rats showed an increase in the levels of tocopherols and their metabolites in the serum and mammary glands.

* γ-TmT decreased the levels of E2-induced nitrosative and oxidative stress markers, nitrotyrosine, 8-Isoprostane, and 8-oxo-dG in the serum in the hyperplastic mammary tissues by stimulating the expression of the protein (Nrf2) associated with the production of the antioxidant enzyme, including superoxide dismutase, catalase, and glutathione peroxidase in the host.

* More precisely, the inhibition of nitrosative/oxidative stress through induction of antioxidant response is the primary effect of γ-TmT in the early stages of E2-induced mammary hyperplasia.

* More importantly, γ-TmT also exerted cytoprotective activity against estrogen-induced breast cancer, without causing the death of healthy cells.

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for the treatment of diseases involved in the expression of oxidative stress, including cancers, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Broccoli Eradicates the Risk of Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a medical condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In other words, xidative stress is a result of the overexpression of free radicals and reduced levels of antioxidants produced by the host.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

Other factors that increase the production of free radicals are cigarette smoke, oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

Antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

Free radicals are unstable molecules that contain at least an unpaired electron with function as oxidants or reductants by donating an electron to or accept an electron from other molecules to exhibit chain and domino's effects.

The most common oxygen-containing free radicals found epidemiologically in induced chronic diseases, including hydroxyl radical, superoxide anion radical, hydrogen peroxide, oxygen singlet, hypochlorite, nitric oxide radical, and peroxynitrite radicals.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes antioxidative stress property, researchers examined the effects sulforaphane (SF), antioxidant activity against alcohol-induced hepatic injury.

Male C57BL/6 mice selected to the study were orally administrated with broccoli sprout extract (BSE) containing sulforaphane [7.6, 25.2, and 50.4 mg/kg of body weight (bw)] once a day for 14 days. However, on the 13th day, mice were challenged with alcohol (5 g/kg of bw) every 12 h for 3 times, which increased malondialdehyde (MDA) levels (4.44 ± 1.24 nmol/mg of protein, p < 0.01) in the liver.

According to the results of the study, the administration of low-, medium-, and high-dose BSE markedly reversed the decrease of antioxidant capacity by increasing the liver antioxidant enzymes.

More precisely, low-, medium-, and high-dose BSE increased the levels of glutathione (GSH) (2.07 ± 0.31 mg/g of protein, p < 0.05; 2.31 ± 0.32 mg/g of protein, p < 0.01; and 2.46 ± 0.21 mg/g of protein, p < 0.01), superoxide dismutase (SOD) (483.20 ± 62.76 units/mg of protein; 500.81 ± 49.82 units/mg of protein, p < 0.05; and 605.00 ± < 64.32 units/mg of protein, p < 0.01), glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) (318 ± 60.74 units/mg of protein; 400.67 ± 72.47 units/mg of protein, p < 0.01; and 394.72 ± 62.97 units/mg of protein, p < 0.01), and glutathione S-transferase (GST) (31.84 ± 6.34 units/mg of protein, p < 0.05; 30.34 ± 6.40 units/mg of protein, p < 0.05; and 38.08 ± 7.05 units/mg of protein, p < 0.01) in the liver.

These results were associated with reduced liver stress markers malondialdehyde (MDA) and increased phase 2 enzymes via nuclear erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2), the antioxidant enzymes enhancer.

Furthermore, the low-, medium-, and high-dose BSE also promoted the levels of the endoplasmic reticulum (ER)-stress-specific proteins in response to stress.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "These results indicate that BSE protects the liver against alcohol challenge via upregulating antioxidant capacity and downregulating ER stress".

Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process a higher amount of SFN may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of diseases associated oxidative stress, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Tocopherols Kills Liver Cancer Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver organ is one of the organs with a lack of nerve tissue, therefore liver cancer does not induce pain until the later stage.

Liver cancer is a medical condition characterized by cell growth irregularly in the liver tissue.

The causes of liver cancer are associated with the alternation of cells DNA which normally begins in the cells on the surface of the inner lining.

Liver cancer at the early stage dose does not cause any symptoms. However, at the advanced stage, liver cancer cells can cause a wide range of symptoms including jaundice, abdominal swelling and pain, and dark urine and white stool accompanied by the general symptoms of cancers such as unintended weight loss, loss of appetite, chronic fatigue and tiredness and gastrointestinal discomforts.

The most common cause of liver cancer is infected by the hepatitis virus.

However, in North America, due to overexpression of overweight and obese of the population, liver cancer may be slowly progressed from nonalcoholic fatty liver disease through cirrhosis to liver cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the Canadian Cancer Society, every year, approximately, 1,900 men and 580 women are diagnosed with liver cancer, causing the death of 950 men and 270 women.

In 2017, 2,500 Canadians were diagnosed with liver cancer and 1,200 Canadians died from liver cancer.

Compared to the early stage of other cancer, the 5 years survival rate in the early stage diagnosis is only 31% and 43% of people with liver cancer diagnosed at stage 0 and 1.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effects of Tocopherols on liver cancer.

According to the analysis of the developed poly(lactide-co-glycolide)/d-alpha-tocopherol polyethylene glycol 1000 succinate nanoparticles to accomplish the simultaneous delivery of an optimized ratio of doxorubicin (DOX) and elacridar (ELC) that targets both LCSCs and liver cancer cells,
* DOX/ELC molar ratio of 1:1 was synergistic in HepG2 cells and HepG2-TS.

* The optimized ratio (NDEs )showed that the combination exhibits significantly increased cytotoxic effects against both HepG2 and HepG2-TS, compared to DOX-loaded nanoparticles (NDs) or ELC-loaded nanoparticles (NEs) in vitro.

* Most importantly, the nanoparticles exhibited better tumor targeting, with NDE showing the strongest antitumor activity with lower systemic toxicity.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "These results suggested that NDE represented a promising combination therapy against liver cancer by targeting both liver cancer cells and CSCs.".

Taken altogether, tocopherols used alone or combined with doxorubicin may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of liver cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Angelica Sinensis Inhibits the Abnormally Proliferative Cardiac Fibroblasts

By Kyle J. Norton

The heart formed part of the circulatory system pumps blood through the blood vessels. The blood provided not only nutrients to cell metabolism but also remove waste during the process.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with blood vessels and the heart.

According to the statistics, heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women. Approximately, over 600,000 Americans die from heart disease each year or 1 in every 4 deaths are from heart disease.

A fibroblast associated with wound healing is a type of biological cell that produces collagen, and the structural framework (stroma) for body tissues.

Cardiac fibroblasts accompanied by myocytes, endothelial cells, and vascular smooth muscle cells are the permanent cellular constituents of the heart.

Cardiac fibroblasts play a critical role in the structure and function of the heart tissues involved in blood circulation to provide nutrients and fluids to the body daily functioning.

Normally, cardiac fibroblasts are activated by the immune system following injury with the function to repair and remodeling tissues of the heart.

Activation of cardiac fibroblasts for heart tissue healing during the post-infarction has been found to involve several processes in the transition to the proliferative phase of infarct healing, including the stimulation of inflammatory reaction, followed by rapid suppression of proinflammatory cytokines and subsequent resolution of the leukocytic infiltrate.

Any disruption of the process may cause forming heart scars and reduce the function of the heart tissue to perform its normal function, leading to many cardiac pathologic conditions, including hypertensive heart disease and aortic stenosis.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases, scientists examined the effects of XueFuZhuYu Decoction (XFZYD) on collagen synthesis and proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts and provide academic bases of remedying kinds of heart disease aroused by the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Compared with the control group, 1 g/ml XFZYD(dilution 1:80) and 10 percent serum of rat contained XFZYD could significantly inhibit the collagen synthesis and the proliferation of cardiac fibroblasts.

* Moreover, 1 g/ml XFZYD(dilution 1:80) could significantly affect collagen secretion of cardiac fibroblasts (P < 0.05), up to 17.9%.

In other words, XFZYD protects the heart connective tissue and muscles against the formation of fibroblasts induced by collagen secretion.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "XFZYD could inhibit both proliferation and collagen secretion of cardiac fibroblasts. It could resist cardiac muscle fibrosis".

Taken altogether, angelica sinensis may be considered a remedy for the protection of the heart against cardiac fibroblasts, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Green Peas, the Potential Anticancer Functional Foods

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Lung, breast, prostate, and colorectal cancers are the most common cancer in the US.

Exposure to toxic chemicals has been a major cause of cancer initiation.

Believe it or not, the California judge ruled that some coffee sellers were required to brand the beverage with cancer warning labels due to containing acrylamide, a chemical compound in the list of chemicals in the facilitated cause of cancer or reproductive harm.

According to the national cancer institute, acrylamide to be reasonably anticipated to be a human carcinogen, based on studies in laboratory animals given acrylamide in drinking water.

Acrylamide, a chemical substance used primarily to make polyacrylamide and acrylamide copolymers. has been included in that list since 1990.

Acrylamide (AA) is classified as a Group 2A carcinogen according to the International Agency for Research on Cancer, but coffee only contains a small amount of AA.

Green peas are species of Pisum Sativum belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to western Asia from the Mediterranean Sea to the Himalaya Mountains. The pea is a green, pod-shaped vegetable and a cool-season crop grown in many parts of the world.

On finding a potent ingredient for the treatment of malignant tumors, researchers investigated green pea anticancer property.

Pisum sativum (Family: Fabaceae), as known as green pea processed nutritional content of fiber, protein, starch, trace elements, and many phytochemical substances have been found to protect the cell DNA integrity through a number of mechanisms, including
* Antixodant against the onset of oxidative stress in the induction of cell DNA damage.

* Anti-inflammatory against overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines to induce cell damage.

* Other health benefits of green peas include antibacterial, antidiabetic, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypercholesterolemia,

According to chemical analysis, rich in apigenin, hydroxybenzoic, hydroxycinnamic, luteolin, and quercetin, were contributed to anti-carcinogenesis property.

Taken altogether, green peas may be considered a functional food for the prevention of cancers,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Oleanolic Acid Cures Diarrhea in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Diarrhea is a condition of frequent bowel movements with three loose or liquid each day. A prolonged period of diarrhea may result in dehydration due to fluid loss.

Acute diarrhea, healed on its own is a common problem caused by viruses that may last in a few days. The most common causes of acute diarrhea are rotavirus in children and norovirus in adults.

Persistent diarrhea lasts more than 4 weeks is considered chronic diarrhea.

Chronic diarrhea is a medical condition caused by impaired digestion of fats due to low production of the pancreatic enzymes and impaired absorption of fats due to small intestinal disease, including lactose, sorbitol, and fructose intolerance and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Certain medications such as antibiotics, dietary changes, infected by bacteria or viruses are some of the most common factors associated with an increased risk of diarrhea.

Infections by bacteria such as Salmonella or Escherichia coli are the most common causes of acute diarrhea. Patients with acute diarrhea usually are recovered within a week or 2 with or without medication.

However, patients with some bowel diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome or inflammatory bowel disease also frequently experience chronic conditions, which can not be cured unless the diseases are treated.

In some cases, chronic frequent and severe diarrhea can be a sign of intestinal disease or a functional bowel disorder.

The most common symptoms of diarrhea include loose, watery stools. abdominal pain and gastrointestinal discomforts. In the severe case, patients may also experience symptoms of fever and blood in the stool.

Some researchers suggested that symptoms of diarrhea accompanied by blood in the stool is also a sign of colon cancer.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant that improves the digestive functioning, researchers examined the effect of oleanolic acid (OA) on Salmonella typhimurium (S.T), a common cause of acute, self-limiting food-borne diarrhea with severe intestinal inflammation and intestinal barrier damage.

The study included a total of eighty BALB/c mice (4-week-old) that were randomly divided into the control group (no S.T, no OA), the S.T group (S.T only), the S.T + OA group (S.T plus 100 mg kg-1 OA) and the OA group (100 mg kg-1 OA only).

According to the results of the analysis,
* Compared with the S.T group, OA administration significantly reduced clinical symptoms and weight loss, and the severity of diarrhea and intestinal structural damage was significantly alleviated observed by a decrease in the diarrhea index (DI) and jejunal histological damage.

* In the infected jejunum, OA maintained the expression and localization of occludin, claudin-1, and ZO-1 to protect the jejunal barrier.

* OA treatment not only reduced the levels of COX-2 and iNOS but also inhibited the secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, such as IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α.

* A treatment significantly inhibited IκB phosphorylation and degradation against the intestinal tissues.

* OA also decreased the level of TLR4 associated with inflammatory cytokine and the activation of the MAPK pathway in the production of anti-inflammatory cytokines.

Collectively, researchers said, "OA can maintain the intestinal tight junction barrier and prevent diarrhea caused by S.T.".

Taken altogether, oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver diarrhea, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) inhibits the Onset of Liver Toxicity in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reducing partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

Liver toxicity is a condition caused by the accumulation of toxin in the liver, leading to liver dysfunction or reduced liver function.

Acute liver toxicity is caused by short-term exposure to toxic chemicals such as an overdose of medication.

Chronic liver toxicity is due to long-term exposure to toxic substances including excessive alcohol drinking and long term use of certain medicines.

In other words, if the liver was damaged due to toxicity, the blood will be toxic, affecting the function of all organs and tissues in the body.

Epidemiological studies suggested liver dysfunction can also induce acute kidney injury (AKI), chronic kidney disease, linking to the increased mortality, and extending to those with chronic liver disease.

The most common signs and symptoms of liver toxicity may include jaundice, abdominal pain, gastrointestinal discomforts, fatigue, Stomach pain. Nausea (upset stomach) Unusual tiredness. dark-colored urine, and pale-colored bowel movements.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the promotion of liver functioning, scientists examined the hepatic toxic effects of prenatal exposure to lead in rats by adding the dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) to the diet.

Selected female rats induced liver toxicity by lead acetate was administered to half of the rats through drinking water from the 5th day of gestation until the 14th day postpartum accompanied by a normal diet (control) or a diet enriched with dandelion (treated) throughout the study for 14 days.

Control female rats fed with lead acetate showed a lead deposition in the blood and stomach of their pups as well as hepatic tissue damages.

Moreover, female tested rats fed with lead acetate also significant decreases in liver weight and protein content

Additionally, the lead treatment caused an increase in the levels of oxidative stress and stress markers by reducing the activity of antioxidant enzymes.

However, rats co-treated with lead and dandelion showed no damages or biochemical changes in puppies and mothers.

In other words, the dandelion extract inhibited the poisoning activity in the induction of liver oxidative stress and liver toxicity.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "supplementation of pregnant and lactating rats with dandelion protects their offspring against lead poisoning, likely through reduction of oxidative stress and liver damages".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for the protection of liver against chemical toxicity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Reduces the Risk of Ischemic Strokes

By Kyle J. Norton

Stroke is a medical condition caused by reduced blood flow to the brain resulting in cell death due to blocked artery (ischemic stroke) or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel (hemorrhagic stroke).

In other words, stroke can be caused by either ischemia, due to lack of blood flow or hemorrhagic, due to bleeding.

A stroke is a medical emergency. Early intervention in most cases can minimize brain damage and potential complications.

Sadly, stroke is one of the most common causes of death worldwide.

In the US, according to statistics, approximately 800,000 people suffer a stroke in which 600,000 of these are first attacks, and 185,000 are recurrent attacks. Nearly three-quarters of all strokes occur in people over the age of 65.

There is a general belief that stroke is an accumulation over a long period of the unhealthy diet with red meat and processed meats in the induction of artery-clogging.

Atherosclerosisassociated with hardening of the arteries caused by the buildup of fatty substances in the arteries can lead to stroke.

In other words, if the blood vessel that feeds the brain is blocked, a stroke occurs.

Some researchers suggested that increased intake of fruits and vegetables such as carrot accompanied with good fats such as salmon, tuna, and mackerel may have a substantial effect in reduced inflammation in the arteries, improved blood flow and decreased the chance of blood clots.

Not all strokes can lead to permanent brain damage. Some people with a temporary disruption of blood flow to the brain do not result in permanent damage.

Besides aging, smoking, medical conditions such as unmanaged high blood pressure and cholesterol and diabetes, obesity, physical inactivity are some of the prevalent factors found in stroke patients.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential remedy for reducing the mortality rate of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the therapeutic potential and protective effect of D3T found in cruciferous vegetables for the treatment of ischemic stroke.

The study included selected mice subjected to transient middle cerebral artery occlusion/reperfusion (tMCAO/R) were administered with vehicle or D3T to evaluate the effect of D3T in cerebral brain injury.

Based on the results of the experiment,
* D3T reduced infarct size, decreased brain edema, lessened blood-brain barrier disruption, and ameliorated neurological deficits.

* D3T suppressed microglia (MG) activation induced by stroke and inhibited peripheral inflammatory immune cell infiltration of CNS in the ischemic brain.

* D3T also exerted a protective effect on ischemic stroke against the induction of oxidative stress by mediating the improved expression of antioxidant enzyme Nrf2.

Based on the results, researchers said, "D3T confers protection against ischemic stroke, which is mediated through suppression of MG activation and inhibition of CNS peripheral cell infiltration, and that the protective effect of D3T in ischemic stroke is dependent on the activation of Nrf2".
Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional remedies for the protection in ischemic strokes, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Moronic acid, The Potential Anti-inflammatory Antioxidant

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from the foreign invasion.

In other words, inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

In some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Conventionally, Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are the most common medical drugs such as aspirin. ibuprofen in reducing inflammation associated with pain-relieving.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the FS-3 fraction, obtained from the dichloromethane extract isolated from B. cuneata, comprised triterpenes β-sitosterol (1), α-amyrin (2), moronic acid (3), and ursolic acid (4) on inflammation.

Comparison to indomethacin (41.5 ± 0.6%) treatment at 0.1 mg/mouse ear, moronic acid displayed the highest inhibitory effect (68.1 ± 1.3%).

In HPLC treated tissues. moronic acid was the most active (73.3 ± 1.1%, indomethacin 33.8 ± 0.8%) in the inhibition of levels of histamine involved in the inflammatory response.

* Moronic acid was the principal anti-inflammatory and antihistaminic compound present in B. cuneata.

Most importantly, moronic acid showed a strong activity on the activation of RAW 264.7 cell stimulated with LPS, at 30 and 15 mg/mL and a significant reduction of ON (36% and 28% respectively) but had no significant effect on TNFα production.

Taken altogether, moronic acid may be considered supplements for the treatment of diseases associated with inflammation, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of moronic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica in the Promotion of Strong Bones

By Kyle J. Norton

Bone is a hard whitish tissue making up the skeleton in humans which provides a framework for the attachment of muscles and other tissues.

Bone density is the amount of bone mineral in bone tissue. Loss of bone density is found to induce osteoporosis.

Bone density is measured by the young adult bone density mean within 1 standard deviation (+1 or −1). The negative T-score is an indication of loss or lower bone density and the T-score of −2.5 or lower is an indication of osteoporosis.

Osteoporosis is a condition of thinning of bone and bone tissues as a result of the loss of bone density over a long period of time.

The condition is a widespread degenerative disease of skeletal joints and often associated with senescence invertebrates due to excessive or abnormal mechanical loading of weight-bearing joints, arising from heavy long-term use or specific injuries.

The exact causes of osteoporosis are unknown. Neither researchers understood that people with the same health conditions are affected by the imbalance between new bone formation and bone resorption while others do not.

However, researchers do know that certain risk factors such as a lid to increase lifelong calcium-deficient diet, age, female, family history,.... bone structure and overweight are associated with the early onset of osteoporosis.

Furthermore, long-term intake of certain medications such as prednisone and a medical condition such as rheumatoid arthritis are also the osteoporosis prevalent risk factors

According to the statistic, 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men older than 50 will suffer from an osteoporosis fracture, worldwide.

On finding a potential herbal medicine for the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, researchers examined the Angelicapolysaccharide (AP), the main component of angelica on mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) proliferation and osteoblast differentiation.

According to the results of MSCs treated with different concentrations of AP, AP significantly promoted cell viability, upregulated cyclin D1 associated with progression through the G1 phase of the cell cycle. and increased RUNX2, OCN, ALP, and BMP-2 protein levels involved in osteoblast differentiation in MSCs.

Additionally, AP notably activated PI3K/AKT and Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathways that maintain the integrity of bone mass maintenance by regulating the activity of the bone-forming osteoblasts in MSCs.

Moreover, the administration of AP also upregulated the relative expression level of H19 which has been found to induce osteogenesis and promote trabecular bone growth in a dose-dependent manner.

In other words, the mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) analysis suggested that AP protects bone density by increasing the bone cell formation.

More importantly, in vivo experimentation, the results also indicated a further confirmation of the promoting effect of AP on bone formation.

Taken altogether, Herbal Angelica may be considered a remedy for the protection of bone density, pending to larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega 3 Fatty Acid Protects the Liver Against the Onset of Cirrhosis in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Liver disease is a class of medical conditions characterized by the reduction partly or completely the function of the liver, including liver failure.

More precisely, the liver disease causes a reduced function in toxin elimination of liver as a result of damage or injury, caused by medication, viral infection...
Liver cirrhosis is a condition of abnormal function of the liver due to damage liver tissue replaced by scar tissue.

In other words, cirrhosis is an irreversible scarring liver as a result of liver tissue by fibrosis due to the final phase of chronic liver diseases that can lead to poor function of the liver and liver failure.

According to the statistics, the number of discharges with chronic liver disease or cirrhosis as the first-listed diagnosis: 101,000 in 2009 and deaths per 100,000 population: 10.3 in 2010(a). Hepatitis B infection cause of the disease is very prevalent in South-East Asia.

According to statistics, the risk of liver cirrhosis is 1.6% in the adult population.

Most common risk factors associated with the onset of cirrhosis are
Risk factors
* Gender
Females who are chronic alcohol drinkers are at an increase to develop Cirrhosis.

* Diabetes mellitus (DM)
If you are diabetic, you are associated with an increased risk of cirrhosis. According to the study by the University Hospital, Monterrey, about 30% of patients with cirrhosis have diabetes mellitus (DM).

* Excessive alcohol drinking
People who drink abusively, in the most case died as a result of the progression of liver diseases.

* Medication-induced cirrhosis
Certain medications may cause an increased risk of cirrhosis to the takers, such as anti-tuberculosis

* Age
The risk of cirrhosis is increased with the progression of age.

* Obesity
The risk of cirrhosis is increased for obese people. In the study to evaluate the role of obesity.

* Heredity
Alpha-1-anti-trypsin deficiency is the most common genetic cause of liver disease in children.

* Toxins
Toxins can damage the liver.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of liver diseases, researchers examined the effect of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) on liver regeneration of rats with liver cirrhosis after hepatectomy.

According to the results of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids intravenously injected in n-3 PUFA group 3 days before the operation to 1 day after partial hepatectomy,
* Liver regeneration was significantly delayed compared with PH group 7 days after hepatectomy (PH) in LC+PH group.

* Liver regeneration of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group increased significantly compared with LC+PH group 7 days after PH.

* In LC+PH group, liver cirrhotic was significantly higher compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* Furthermore, liver cirrhosis of LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group was significantly reduced compared with LC+n-3 PUFA+PH group 7 days after PH.

* More importantly, anti-inflammatory cytokine IL-10 was increased and pro-inflammatory cytokine IL-6 was decreased in LC+n-3 PUFA*+PH group compared with LC+PH group.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " N-3 PUFA also suppressed increments in mRNA expression for transforming growth factor-β and up-regulated the expression of matrix metalloproteinase-9 and matrix metalloproteinase-1 in the liver".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of liver cirrhosis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Field Mustard Modulates the Apoptotic and Inflammatory Responses

By Kyle J. Norton

The inflammatory response (inflammation) is the reaction of the immune system to target the tissues injured by trauma, toxins, heat, and pathogens.

Inflammation is a natural immune response that protects our body against the invasion of stimuli and foreign pathogens.

During the acute phase of infection, the immune first line of defense activates the protein associated with the production of blood palettes to cover the wound and inflammatory cytokines to the site of injury with an aim to prevent and kill off microorganisms.

However, overproduction of inflammatory cytokines not only can induce fever, swelling, and pain to the affected area but also damage to the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation to the affect tissue or organ. Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

People with a strong immune system, during the acute phase of infection, the levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines are balanced by the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines without affecting the immune activity.

However, in children, the elderly and people with the weakened immune system, overexpression of proinflammatory cytokines can damage the nearby cells and tissue, leading to the formation of scars.

On finding a potential plant that improves the apoptotic and inflammatory responses, researchers compared the effects of field mustard polysaccharides (BRPs) on acute liver injury induced by carbon tetrachloride (CCl4).

According to the results of mice that were treated with CCl4 after the oral administration of BRPs (55, 110 and 220 mg/kg) or bifendate (100 mg/kg) for 7 days, BRP pre-treatment significantly decreased the liver toxic markers MDA, ALT, ALP, and AST in the serum, by increasing the levels of SOD and GSH-Px in the liver.

BRPs pretreatment was found to alleviate the hepatocyte injury by inhibiting the expression of proinflammatory proteins and pathways, such as TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, and the CCl4 -induced hepatic tissue apoptosis caspase-3.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study demonstrated that BRPs exert hepatoprotective effect against the CCl4 -induced liver injury via modulating the apoptotic and inflammatory responses and downregulating the JAK2/STAT3 signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, field mustard may be considered a functional food to enhance the apoptotic and inflammatory responses, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cranberry Speeds Up Wound Healing

By Kyle J. Norton

Wound healing is the natural process of repair of skin damage and injury.

The process of skin healing in humans is gone through several stages. First, the immune system after sensing the skin wound activates the immune first-line defense stimulating the constriction of the blood vessel to reduce blood flow, activate platelets, and many different clotting factors to cover the wound area.

Then, the white blood cells also up-regulate the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off all the invasive organisms.

In most cases, due to the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, patients may experience symptoms of fever, and localized pain, redness, and swelling.

The process of wound healing involves 4 phases
* The first phase of wound healing is cover up the wound. In this phase, the immune first line of defense white blood cells stimulates the emergency repair system in the production of blood clotting to block the drainage.

* In phase 2, the white blood cells activates the proteins associated with the inflammatory cytokines to destroy the pathogens before they can enter the body through the wound.

* In phase 3, new blood vessels and tissues are formed in the damage and injury area.

* The recovery phase.

However, the healing process is easier said than done, the complex process in many cases can be interrupted by local and systemic factors, including moisture, infection, age, and nutritional status, leading to the formation of scar

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the promotion of skin healing, researchers compared the pharmacological properties of the phytochemical constituents present in oils of cranberry on wound healing.

Selected animals in the study were divided into four groups of six each (n = 6) as follow,
* The experimental group 1 and 2 animals were treated topically with the grape and cranberry oil (100 mg/kg body weight), respectively.

* The controls were treated with petroleum jelly.

* The standard group of animals was treated with mupirocin ointment (100 mg/kg body weight).

According to the healing process assays,
* On day 13, animals treated with cranberry oil showed a better reduction in the wound area of 88.1%  compared with grape-oil treated of 84.6%, 74.1% in control and 78.4% in standard group animals.

* Furthermore, the hydroxyproline content of the granulation tissue was significantly higher in the animals treated with cranberry and the grape-oil compared to control and standard groups.

In other words, cranberry oil exerted the strongest effects in the promotion of wound healing compared to other experimental groups.

Collectively, researchers wrote, "Comparative investigation of the curative properties of the oils of V. vinifera and V. macrocarpon revealed a significant result which suggests their wound-healing potential".

Taken altogether, cranberry oil may be considered a topical remedy for speeding up wound healing, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
