Bioactive Compound Curcumin Found in Herbal Turmeric Inhibits the Risk of Peripheral Arterial Disease In Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Peripheral artery disease is a common circulatory condition caused by narrowed arteries that reduce blood flow to your limbs.

Most cases of peripheral artery disease have been associated with the accumulation of plaque in thicking and hardening the arteries, a leading cause of atherosclerosis.

The most common prevalent factors associated with peripheral artery disease are tobacco, physical inactivity, and an unhealthy diet with high in fat, processed food, and red meat and low in fruits and vegetables.

Most patients with peripheral arterial disease are asymptomatic or experience a mild case of pain in the leg while walking. However, as the disease progression, some patients may also experience symptoms of leg numbness or weakness, coldness in their lower leg or foot, sores on their toes, feet or legs that won't heal, a change in the color of their legs, slower growth of your toenails and shiny skin on your legs.

Some men also experience the syndrome of erectile dysfunction in severe cases.

Conventionally, treatment of peripheral arterial disease is focusing improving symptoms, such as leg pain, and quality of life and stopping the progression of atherosclerosis associated with the risk of heart attack and stroke, including medication to lower cholesterol, blood pressure, and blood sugar.

In some cases, surgery may be necessary to treat peripheral artery disease if patients experience claudication that does not respond to medicine.

Some researchers in the investigation of the effect of the heart-healthy diet on peripheral arterial disease wrote, "Peripheral arterial disease (PAD) is a burdensome cardiovascular condition that results from chronic inflammatory insults to the arterial vasculature".

And, "The nutrients reviewed included omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs), folate and B-series vitamins, and anti-oxidants. The diet plans described include the DASH diet, Mediterranean diet, low-fat diet, low carbohydrate diet, Dr. Dean Ornish’s Spectrum® Diet, and Dr. Andrew Weil’s Anti-Inflammatory Diet".

In other words, by changing to a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables and less red meat, saturated and trans fat, and processed foods peripheral arterial disease may be preventable.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

On findings of a potential compound for the treatment of heart diseases, researchers examined curcumin treatment improves tissue repair and perfusion recovery in a mouse model of diabetic PAD.

Mice with PAD selected for the study with a normal glycaemic profile treated with curcumin, improved perfusion recovery, observed by the increased capillary density and elevated microRNA (miR)-93 expression in the ischemic muscle tissue.

In vitro, cultured endothelial cells under simulated ischemia, treated with curcumin improved endothelial cell viability and enhanced tube formation.

However, improved endothelial cell viability and enhanced tube formation were inhibited in the presence of the miR-93 inhibitor, regardless of the administration of curcumin.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "curcumin had beneficial effects in non-diabetic PAD by improving angiogenesis, which may have been achieved partially via the promotion of miR-93 expression".

Taken altogether, turmeric processed abundantly bioactive compound curcumin may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of peripheral arterial disease, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Reduce the Risk of Postpartum Depression (PPD)

By Kyle J. Norton

Depression is a normal response as part of our daily lives such as the loss of s job, the death of a loved one, and illness.

Over 30 million Americans suffer from depression and the amount is increasing at an alarming rate.

Depression may be a mental health disorder that can affect the way you eat, sleep, and the way you feel about yourself.

The mild case of depression can be defeated by a variety of self-care techniques. Others require the treatment of medication, such as antidepressant medications and psychotherapy that help to reduce and sometimes eliminate the symptoms of depression.

Postpartum depression (postnatal depression), is a type of clinical depression, that affects women after childbirth. Normally this nervous tension occurs in women in the first new months of pregnancy, but in some women, it can last after childbirth.

The rate of occurrence is between 5 -25%, depending on the uniqueness of each woman. In men, the occurrence of postpartum depression is uncleared, affecting between 1% and 25%.

Normally the symptoms will go away on their own in a short period of time (Baby blue symptoms). In some women, the symptoms get more serve every day and do not go away which can lead to the onset of postpartum depression.

Since postpartum depression is a serious mental illness, it can interfere with your ability to look after yourself, your child, and your daily activities performance, etc.

If left untreated, it can badly affect your newborn such as loving one minute and being withdrawn the next, do not respond to the needs of the baby, leading to the insecurity attachment(a negative feeling when they are baby), lack of emotional bond between the mother and the baby, etc

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical that processed anti-psychological activity researchers examined and compared the effects of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid supplementation on depression during pregnancy or postpartum depression (PPD) after childbirth.

The study included a search of medical literature published on MEDLINE, PubMed, PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Collaboration Registry of Controlled Trials, etc. through July 2017.

According to the identified studies, omega-3 fatty acid deficiency, due to inadequate intake, and fast depletion during pregnancy and lactation were associated with one of the risk factors of PPD.

Additionally, the elevated neuroinflammation (elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines) and aberrant neurotransmission (low serotonergic transmission activity) also increased the risk of PPD.

Supplementation with eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA)-rich oil showed effectively reduces depression during pregnancy and PPD after childbirth.

However, long-term treatment with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA)-rich oil could also be effective in reducing the risk of PPD in healthy women, but not in lactating women.

Moreover, Supplementation of DHA-rich oil to women begun at pregnancy and continued after childbirth showed no beneficial effect on depression.

Based on the evidence, researchers wrote, "Dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids rich in EPA during pregnancy or postpartum reduces some symptoms associated with depression. DHA supplementation to healthy pregnant women can also reduce the risk of PPD".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered functional foods for the prevention of postpartum depression (PPD), pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Beta-Sitosterol Found in Japanese Arrowroot or Chinese Arrowroot Shows an Effect on Menopausal Symptoms In Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Menopause is a condition in which a woman is in the transition stage of permanent cessation of the ovary's functions in egg production because of less production of estrogen and progesterone, signaling the end of the reproductive phase of a woman's life.

In menopause, menstruation has become irregular and slowly stops over time, but in some women, menstrual flow comes to a sudden halt.

Some researchers suggested that you officially enter the stage of menopause if you have gone 12 months without a menstrual period.

Compared to menopause, peri-menopause is a condition in which women experience an irregular menstrual cycle due to the hormonal decline gradually, including shorter, longer, heavy, light periods and some menopause symptoms.

Perimenopause, in fact, is a transition stage to menopause, and the length of this transition can be 3-10 years or longer. Once you have no menstrual period in 12 consecutive months, you have officially entered 12 months of menopause already.

Women enter the menopause stage differently, but the average age is 51 in the United States.

Women with ovarian failure or removed may experience symptoms of menopause at the early age of 38.

Symptoms of menopause are the result of the gradually reduced production of estrogen and progesterone, the 2 most abundant hormones in childbearing-age women.

Most women in the Western world experience symptoms of hot flashes and emotional symptoms of menopause may disrupt your sleep, lower your energy or affect emotional health.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, and buckwheat. etc.

In finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of menopausal symptoms, researchers elucidated the biological activities of Pueraria lobata (PL) on menopause-related metabolic diseases.

According to the results of ovariectomized (OVX) rats as a postmenopausal model that was administered PL at different doses (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg),* The decreased uterine weights and PPAR-γ (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor-gamma) mRNA expression in the thigh muscle found in menopausal females in the ovariectomized (OVX) rats were significantly recovered after PL administration.

* Furthermore, PL also significantly alleviated OVX-induced increases in total cholesterol, triglyceride, alanine aminotransferase (ALT/GPT), and aspartate aminotransferase (AST/GOT) levels.

More precisely, the efficacy of Pueraria lobata (PL) on menopause-related metabolic diseases was attributed to four potential active compounds, including beta-sitosterol.

In other words, the chemical compounds exerted a strong activity against multiple targets among female sex hormone-related pathways, including the estrogen signaling pathways, progesterone-mediated oocyte maturation, oxytocin signaling pathways, and prolactin signaling pathways.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "PL improved various indicators associated with lipid metabolism in the postmenopausal animal model".

Beta-Sitosterol may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of menopausal symptoms, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Inhibits The Liver Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Oxidative stress is a condition characterized by the imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidant enzymes produced by the host tissue.

In other words, oxidative stress is either caused by overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

Long-term oxidative stress present in the body can cause protein and lipid damage and alternation of cell DNA, leading to the onset of chronic diseases, including cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer.

In some cases, this reaction also is caused long-term accumulation of toxic substances in the body, such as lead, cadmium, mercury, and arsenic.

There is no single cause of oxidative stress. Some researchers suggested that a number of factors can facilitate the onset of oxidative stress, including cigarette smoke, and oxidative burst from activated macrophages, particularly, the free radicals chain reaction.

Sadly, a prolonged period of oxidative stress present in the human body can cause oxidative damage to biomolecules, (lipids, proteins, DNA) and the death of healthy cells through cytotoxicity.

Certain chronic diseases are found to be associated with oxidative stress, including atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetics, rheumatoid arthritis, post-ischemic perfusion injury, myocardial

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the curative efficacy of L-Ascorbic acid (L-AA) and α-Tocopherol (α-TOC) against Arsenic trioxide (As2O3) toxicity using immortalized human Chang liver cells.

According to the analysis,
* L-AA (100 µM) and α-TOC (50 µM) recovered As2O3 (10 µM) cytotoxicity.

* As2O3 treatment showed an increase in lipid peroxidation and depletion in antioxidant status, mitochondrial transmembrane potential, and values of total antioxidant capacity.

* Cotreatment of antioxidant vitamins with As2O3 resulted in a significant reversal of oxidative stress markers.

Based on the results, researchers said, "substantiate the effect of antioxidant vitamins in protecting the hepatocytes from oxidative stress which may be attributed through Nrf2 (Nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2) mediated upregulation of Bcl2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) expression".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing the risk of liver oxidative stress, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

Maternal Coffee and Coffee Caffeine Intakes May Increase the Risk of Poor Child Cognition and Behavior, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Food therapy is a slowly recovering but effective method used in traditional medicine to ease symptoms and treatment of diseases, depending on the stages of the treatment which directly addresses the roots of the cause without inducing adverse effects.

Epidemiological studies do not agree that coffee and coffee caffeine intake during pregnancy may have a negative impact on child cognition and behavior.

Coffee, second to green tea is a popular and social beverage all over the world, particularly in the West, made from roasted beans from the Coffea plant, native to tropical Africa and Madagascar.

Caffeine, a chemical stimulant found abundantly in caffeinated products, including tea and coffee is a class of methylxanthine having a profound impact on the central nervous system (CNS).

Cognition and Behavior is a group of neuro functions involving sensation and perception, learning and memory, attention, mental imagery, conceptual presentation, language expression, emotion response, and motor control,.....

In the study of examining maternal serum paraxanthine at <20 and ≥26 weeks' gestation with the child's intelligence quotient (IQ) and problem behaviors at ages 4 and 7 years among 2,197 mother-child pairs, researchers showed that paraxanthine, a structurally related to caffeine.and caffeine's primary metabolite concentration has a significantly inverted effect at ≥26 weeks' gestation with child's IQ at age 7 years.

And at <20 weeks, paraxanthine also expressed a linearly associated with internalizing behavior at age 4 years.

Paraxanthine is a caffeine metabolite and central nervous system (CNS) stimulant processed a similar potency equal to that of caffeine.

Interestingly, after taking into account a range of values applicable to most pregnant women, researchers indicated that coffee caffeine in contribution to serum paraxanthine concentration showed no significant effect in association with childhood IQ or problem behaviors.

In contrast to the healthy mothers, women's reported coffee intake per day during pregnancy was associated with a lower child's behavior rating scale (BRS), a complete overview of child and adolescent concerns and disorders, and ratings in anemic children. Even with the inclusion of other contributing factors and after anemic children were given appropriate treatment, coffee consumption continuously showed poor child cognition and behavior.

The Behavior Rating Scale (BRS) is an assessment frequently used by experts in the assessment of the development of child cognition and behavior in infants and children, including autism.

Dr.Engle PL, the lead author said, " The effects of postnatal coffee ingestion in Guatemala were seen for sleep duration, but not for cognitive development. Prenatal coffee ingestion was negatively associated with behavior rating scales".

Taking all together, coffee caffeine intake during pregnancy may not have any meaningful effect in association with children's cognitive development and measurement by behavior rating scales, excluding anemic children. But caffeine as a neural stimulant may have a negative impact on the brain function by altering fetal normal neural transmission during a stage of brain development, some researchers are concerned.

Beta-Sitosterol Processes Hypolipidemic Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ found in the human which plays an essential role in filtering the blood from the digestive system before passing them to other parts of the body.

The liver also produces cholesterol, a waxy substance which aids digestion, builds cell membranes and produces vitamin D and steroid hormones.

Cholesterol is a waxy substance that is produced either by the liver or injected from animal food sources.

Cholesterol found in our body is needed to build cell walls, hormones, and vitamin D, and create bile salts that aid digestion. However, too much of them, in most cases due to the intake of animal protein can cause plaques built up on the arterial wall, the major cause of heart disease and stroke.

More precisely, if levels of low-density lipoprotein are high compared to high-density lipoprotein which returns the accessed cholesterol back to the liver, you have high blood cholesterol.

High blood cholesterol is the most common cause of hyperlipidemia. According to statistics provided by the CDC, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older are living with high blood cholesterol with a total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL. and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

In other words, hyperlipidemia has a high prevalent ratio that affects over 100 million American and the condition is increasing at an alarming rate due to overweight and obesity.

Believe it or not, only half of the people with high blood cholesterol benefits from taking the lowering blood cholesterol medicine.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. However, if untreated, the condition can cause cholesterol build-up on the arterial wall, leading to narrowing the arteries inducing blockage that causes heart disease and stroke.

The most common inherited form of high blood cholesterol is called familial hypercholesterolemia found in 1/500 people.

Beta-Sitosterol is a phytochemical in the class of Phytosterols, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in avocados, rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, fennel, peanuts, soybeans, hawthorn, basil, buckwheat. etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of diseases involved in high blood cholesterol, researchers investigated β-sitosterol ester with linoleic acids and β-sitosterol self-microemulsions preparation on hyperlipidemia mice.

Selected mice were randomly divided into normal group and model group, fed with a basic diet and high-fat diet for 70 days respectively.

After high-fat model mice were successfully established, the model group was further divided into eight groups: HFD (high-fat diet feeding), SELA-TSO(8 ml/kg, SELA:700 mg/kg), TSO (8 ml/kg), SSSM (8 ml/kg,SS:700 mg/kg), NLSM (8 ml/kg), SSHT-TSO (8 ml/kg, SS: 700 mg/kg) and SS-TSO (8 ml/kg, SS: 700 mg/kg) groups, and treated with β-sitosterol ester with linoleic acid, β-sitosterol self-microemulsion, commercial β-sitosterol health tablets, and β-sitosterol powder for 35 days, respectively.

Based on the results of the experiment,
* β-sitosterol self-microemulsion has the highest anti-hyperlipidemic effect among the experimental groups, compared to β-sitosterol ester with linoleic acids.

* The anti-hyperlipidemic effects are listed as SSSM> SELA-TSO > SSHT-TSO > SS-TSO.

Collectively, researchers said, "a new formulation of β-sitosterol was developed, and its hypolipidemic effect was investigated. The results showed that β-sitosterol self-microemulsion has a good blood lipid-lowering effect".

Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of hyperlipidemia, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Butterbur May Process Anti Acute and Chronic Migraine Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal butterbur may be considered a functional herb in the protection of neurons against change in the brain and its surrounding blood vessels in the initiated onset of migraine, some scientists suggested.

Migraine headache is one most common headaches defined as a condition of a chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches, and nausea that usually develops gradually over 5–20 minutes and lasts for less than 60 minutes.

According to statistics, the syndrome affects over 15% of the population in the US. If you are a woman your risk of migraine headaches is 2 times higher in compared to men.

Sadly, 1 in 7 people in the world population will develop migraine headache at some point in their lifetime, And, chronic migraine affects about 2% of the world population.

Some patients during migraine attacks also suffer symptoms of visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch, and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.

Believe it or not, 10% of school-age children also suffer from undiagnosed migraine headaches.

Conventional medicine in reducing symptoms of pain during attacks such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan,..and Eletriptan may be effective but they may induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, dizziness, drowsiness,... and muscle weakness.

Please make sure that you discuss these side effects with your doctor before taking them.

Butterbur, found in wet, marshy, damp land, including wetland, riversides, forests, etc., is a creeping underground plant, genus Petasites of 15 -20 species, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Northern Hemisphere.

The herb has been used in herbal medicine used as a pain reliever in the digestive system, including the stomach, bile ducts, duodenum, etc.

The Chemical constituents
The chemical constituents of Butterbur include Petioles, petasitene and pethybrene, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-glucoside, quercetin 3-O-beta-D-6''-O-acetylglucoside, and rutin, caffeic acid, alkaloids, S-petasin and iso-S-petasin, etc.

Although the herb is used as a nutritional supplement in the US, scientific studies suggested that it may be used as the prevention of allergic rhinitis and treatment of migraine.

In a three-arm, parallel-group, randomized trial comparing Petasites extract 75 mg bid, Petasites extract 50 mg bid, or placebo bid in 245 patients with migraine, satisfied the International Headache Society criteria, researchers found that by calculating the migraine attack frequency per month as percentage change from baseline over a 4-month treatment period

* Migraine attack frequency was reduced by 48% for Petasites extract 75 mg bid (p = 0.0012 vs placebo), 36% for Petasites extract 50 mg bid (p = 0.127 vs placebo), in compared to 26% of placebo group.

* The proportion of patients with a > or =50% reduction in attack frequency after 4 months was 68% for patients in the Petasites extract 75-mg arm and 49% for the placebo arm (p < 0.05).
* In comparison to the baseline, patients, intake of Petasites 75 mg also expressed a significant effect in reduced migraine at 1, 2, and 3 months.

* Mild adverse effects such as gastrointestinal events, predominantly burping. were also reported.

These results suggested that butterbur Petasites extract 75 mg bid is more effective than placebo and is well tolerated as a preventive therapy for migraine.

Furthermore, in the review to confirm the strength of evidence of effectiveness for Petasites hybridus in treating prophylaxis of migraine by searching several databases and other sources to identify randomized-controlled trials, the Headache Center Hirslanden in Zürich, Switzerland found 2 trials totaling 293 patients (60 and 233 patients).

According to the selected trials, oral administrated butterbur extract at a higher dose (150 mg) expressed a greater decreased frequency of migraine attacks and a greater number of responders (improvement>50%) after treatment over 3-4 months compared to the extract at a lower dose (100 mg) and placebo.

Additional differentiation also found some evidences that higher than the recommended dose may be more effective in treating prophylaxis of migraine.

More profoundly, in the study of 60 patients who received either the special Petasites hybridus extract Petadolex or placebo at a dosage of two capsules (each capsule contains 25 mg) twice daily over 12 weeks, researchers found that

* Oral injection of the capsules Petadolex reduces the frequency of migraine attacks decreased by a maximum of 60 percent compared to the baseline.

* No adverse events were reported. Petasites were exceptionally well tolerated.

Taking all together, herbal butterbur extract may be considered a therapeutic treatment for acute and chronic migraine headaches, however, the exact dose should only be prescribed by herbalists.

Herbal Chaste Tree Berry (Vitex Agnus-castus) May Process Anti-Leukemia Potency

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal ingredient for the treatment of leukemia with no side effects, some studies suggested.

Leukemia is a medical condition characterized by the production of high numbers of abnormal white blood cells. A disease is a group of cancers originating in the soft, inner part of the bones (bone marrow).

At the advanced stage, the cancerous cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy cells of other tissue and organs, particularly, in the tissue of lymph nodes, spleen, liver, and central nervous system.

The exact causes of leukemia are unknown, however, researchers do know that smoking, and genetic disorders such as Down syndrome. blood disorders and previous treatment for cancer with chemotherapy or radiation are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of the disease.

Leukemia can be classified into acute and chronic leukemia. In acute and chronic leukemia, the abnormal cells can multiply quickly. On the other hand, chronic leukemia, progresses slowly and early symptoms may be very mild.

According to the statistic provided by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada, in Canada, leukemia is the most common form of cancer in children 0-14 years of age and the 6th most common among young adults 15 to 29 years.

Every year over 900 children, 0-14 years of age are diagnosed with cancer, accounting for 11% of all childhood cancer.

The most common symptoms of leukemia include persistent fever or chills, fatigue, weakness, frequent or severe infections, unintentional weight loss, swollen lymph nodes, and enlarged liver or spleen.

If you are experiencing some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility of leukemia.

Chaste tree berry is a species of Vitex agnus-castus, genus Vitex, belonging to the family Lamiaceae, native to the Mediterranean region.

The tree has been used in herbal medicine for thousands of years as an aphrodisiac herb and is considered a Queen herb in treating menstrual problems and discomforts by taking it for a prolonged period of time.

There was a report suggested that chaste tree berry stems and leaves can be used by women as bedding "to cool the heat of lust" during the time of the Thesmophoria,

Chemical constituents
1. β-citronellol
2. Labdane-type diterpenoids,
3. Halimane-type diterpenoid,
4. Oleanane-type triterpenoids,
5. Ursane-type triterpenoids,
6. Sesquiterpenoid,
7. Flavonoid
8. Viteagnusins C, D, E, F, G, and H
9. Abietane-type diterpenoids

In the study to reaffirm the extract from the ripe fruit of Vitex Angus-cactus (Vitex), may be considered an anticancer candidate, researchers at the joint investigation led by the Tokyo University of Pharmacy and Life Sciences conducted a study to provide a molecular rationale for clinical development in anticancer therapy(SB203580, an inhibitor for p38 MAPK), a detailed mechanism underlying the efficacy of Vitex against HL-60 cells.

* Vitex and the addition of SB203580 induced a dose- and time-dependent decreased cancer cell viability associated with induction of apoptosis and G(2)/M cell cycle arrest.

* SB203580 significantly suppressed Vitex-induced phosphorylation of histone H3, a downstream molecule of p38 MAPK involved in the induction of tumor cells.

* Vitex inhibited HL-60 cancer cells through, the mediation of cytotoxicity.

* A decline in ROS levels along with enhanced apoptosis was observed after treatment with Vitex.

These results suggested that chaste tree berry inhibited the HL 60 cells by increasing the expression of ROS in the facilitated cytotoxicity and inducing apoptosis through cell cycle arrest.

In the summary of the findings, Dr. Kikuchi H, the lead author said, "These results may have important implications for appropriate clinical uses of Vitex and provide novel insights into the interaction between Vitex and other conventional drugs capable of affecting intracellular redox status".

Further differentiation of the cytotoxicity of Vitex agnus-castus fruit extract and its major component, casticin against the leukemia cell lines, HL-60 and U-937, researchers found that Vitex and casticin induced cytotoxicity on both cell lines in a dose depended on manner. and HL-60 cells were more sensitive to the cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin compared to U-937 cells.

Since the HL-60 cell line is more immature than the U-937 cell line, these results suggested that the levels of cytotoxicity of Vitex/casticin were largely attributed to the types of leukemia cells.

Taken altogether, Chaste tree berry may be considered a functional food and an adjunct therapy combined with conventional medicine for the treatment of leukemia without inducing any side effects.

However, due to the limitation of the studies, further data collection on large example size and multi-centers studies performed with human consumption of the whole food during the course of the disease will be necessary to complete the picture of chaste tree berry anti-leukemia possibilities.

Healthy Food Broccoli Improves the Chemotherapeutic Drug Efficacy for the Treatment of Head and Neck Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases characterized by irregular cell growth that starts in the tissue of specific organs.

Over time, after penetrating into deeper layers of the affected organs, the oversize tumor can sometimes spread to other organs in the body via lymph or blood, leading to secondary metastasis.

Head and neck cancer is a class of cancer including the mouth, nose, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

The most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

Most cases of head and neck cancer start in the cell of the inner lining of the affected tissue. However, at the later stage, the cancer cell can travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. However, certain risk factors have been found to associate with the onset of the disease, including, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, infection by the HPV virus, poor oral health, race, and long-term exposure to wood dust.

Some researchers suggested that people who perform oral sex before sexual intercourse is at a higher incidence of disease development as human papillomavirus (HPV) can spread during oral sex, increasing the possibility of oral cancer.

Other risk factors such as prolonged sun exposure, infection by Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), poor oral and dental hygiene and occupational inhalants, long-term marijuana, tobacco use, and involuntary smoking are also associated with the onset of head and neck cancer.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential whole for the prevention and treatment of cancer, researchers examined the effect of sulforaphane (SFN) isolated from broccoli extract in the improvement of chemotherapeutic drug efficacy in the treatment of head and neck cancer.

According to the results of differentiation, SF improved the chemotherapeutic efficacies used in the combination with much lower doses of CIS or 5-FU against SCCHN cells, by reducing cytotoxicity to normal cells.

On SCCHN human cell lines (SCC12 and SCC38), titrations of SF standalone or in combination with CIS and 5-FU
* SF treatment alone reduced the SCCHN cell viability in a time- and dose-dependent manner.

* SF-combined treatment not only increased the cytotoxic activity of CIS by two folds and of 5-FU by tenfold against SCCHN but also inhibited SCCHN cell clonogenicity and post-treatment DNA repair with no effect on normal cells.

Furthermore, SF increased SCCHN apoptosis by promoting the proteins associated with proapoptosis and inhibiting the proteins involved in the anti-apoptotic activity in the tested cell lines.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Combining SF with low doses of CIS or 5-FU increased cytotoxicity against SCCHN cells while having minimal effects on normal cells".

Taken altogether, broccoli processed with high amounts of sulforaphane may be considered a functional food for reducing chemo drug side effects, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of sulforaphane in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.
