Intestinal motility disorder is a condition associated with abnormal intestinal contractions, such as spasms and intestinal paralysis.
In a healthy individual, intestinal muscles contract and relax in a coordinated, rhythmic fashion that propels food at each stage of digestion. However, in patients with intestinal motility disorders, food passed at each stage is reduced or blocked due to abnormal intestinal muscle motility.
The most common symptoms of intestinal motility disorders are difficulty swallowing, GERD., gas, severe constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain, vomiting, and bloating.
In other words, intestinal motility disorders cause a wide range of digestive symptoms.
The most common causes of intestinal motility disorders are associated with the problem of muscle that controls peristalsis or the nerves or hormones that control the muscle's contractions.
Certain diseases such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), gastroparesis, esophageal spasms, diabetes, and Hirschsprung's disease are also linked to the onset of intestinal motility disorders.
Dr. Deane AM, the lead scientist in the examination of conventional treatment of intestinal motility disorders, said, "Gastrointestinal dysmotility causes delayed gastric emptying, enteral feed intolerance, and functional obstruction of the small and large intestine, the latter functional obstructions being frequently termed ileus and Ogilvie syndrome".
And, "While the administration of either metoclopramide or erythromycin is supported by evidence it appears that dual-drug therapy (erythromycin and metoclopramide) reduces the rate of treatment failure...Several drugs, including ghrelin agonists, highly selective 5-hydroxytryptamine receptor agonists, and opiate antagonists are being studied in clinical trials. Neostigmine, when infused at a relatively slow rate in patients receiving continuous hemodynamic monitoring, may alleviate the need for endoscopic".
Indicaxanthin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of Betacyanins, belongings to the group of Betalains found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.
According to the Università di Palermo, phytochemical Indicaxanthin may process the function that inhibits the risk of abnormal intestinal contractions associated with the ability gut to coordinate muscular activity.
Abnormal intestinal contractions in the gut have been found to induce inflammation and abdominal cramps.
More precisely, indicaxanthin induced inhibitory effects on the abnormally spontaneous mechanical activity gut-associated with an enzyme that causes muscle constriction.
Furthermore, the phosphodiesterases (PDEs) function that regulated contraction and relaxation of smooth musculature induced by the expression of 3-isobutyl-1-methylxanthine (IBMX) was also modulated by the injection of indicaxanthin.
Moreover, administration of indicaxanthin and IBMX, a pan-specific inhibitor of phosphodiesterases also significantly reduced the carbachol-evoked contractions with no side effects.
And, both indicaxanthin and IBMX increased the inhibitory effects of forskolin associated with muscle relaxant effects with no adverse effects.
In other words, Phytochemical indicaxanthin increased both basal and forskolin involved in muscle relaxant activity in mouse ileal muscle by inhibiting the mechanisms associated with motility disorders.
Dr. Baldassano S, the lead scientist said, "indicaxanthin reduces the contractility of ileal longitudinal muscle by inhibition of PDEs and increase of cAMP concentration and raise the possibility of using indicaxanthin in the treatment of motility disorders, such as abdominal cramps".
Taken altogether, indicaxanthin may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of motility disorders, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Phytochemical Tocopherols Reduce the Risk of Alzheimer's disease and Age-Related Cognitive Decline in Vitamin E Deficient Adults
By Kyle J. Norton
Cognition is the process of the brain including the attention of working memory, producing and comprehending language, learning, reasoning, problem-solving, and decision making.
Cognitive impairment is a condition, that affects a person's thinking, communication, understanding, or memory. Cognitive impairment can be acute or chronic.
Acute cognitive impairment is a short-term health problem caused by delirium, an acutely disturbed state of mind due to drugs (toxicity and withdrawal), electrolyte disturbance, lack of drugs, liver disease, infection, reduced sensory input, intracranial urinary retention/fecal impaction or m Myocardial/metabolic/pulmonary.
Chronic cognitive impairment is a permanent medical condition associated with problems with language, ideomotor and constructive praxis, visual gnosis, spatial attention, learning abilities, and executive functions.
According to the examination of the results of 31 articles that were selected for the meta-analysis, patients with AD or age-related cognitive deficits and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) had lower circulatory concentrations of α-tocopherol compared with healthy controls.
Based on the findings, researchers suggested, "lower α-tocopherol levels have a strong association with AD and MCI supporting evidence for the role of diet and vitamin E in AD risk and age-related cognitive decline".

People with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) are at greater risk for the development of dementia, including Alzheimer's Disease.
According to the statistic provided by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 16 million people in the United States are living with cognitive impairment and these numbers are increasing at an alarming rate.
Sadly, the CDC continued, "An estimated 5.1 million Americans aged 65 years or older may currently have Alzheimer’s disease, the most well-known form of cognitive impairment; this number may rise to 13.2 million by 2050".

The causes of cognitive impairment are unknown. However, researchers suggested that aging, genetically mutated gene inherited from parents, such as Down's Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), autism, persistent mental health problems, together with unhealthy diet and lifestyle are associated with the onset of cognitive impairment.
Furthermore, hormonal imbalances, physical damage to the portion of the brain that is responsible for controlling cognitive function, and substance abuse are also some major causes of the development of the condition.

Indian Gingsen #Ashwagandha Inhibits the Onset of Hypercholesterolemia, Researchers Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced by the liver or the dietary plays a critical role to aid digestive function in absorbing nutrients and fluids, build strong cell membranes, produce steroid hormones and vitamin D. However, excessive amounts of cholesterol in the blood have been found to induce plaque built-up on the arterial wall, leading to hypercholesterolemia, a leading cause of heart disease, and stroke.
Hypercholesterolemia is a condition characterized by abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream.
The condition is a result caused by either overexpression of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or low levels of high-density lipoprotein (HDL).
People with hypercholesterolemia at the early stage are asymptomatic. However, patients with familial hypercholesterol may experience symptoms of chest pain with activity. xanthomas, and cholesterol deposits around the eyelids.
According to the statistics provided by the CDC, hypercholesterolemia is a major risk factor of heart disease, a leading cause of death in the US.
In the US, approximately, 71 million American adults (33.5%) have high low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or “bad,” cholesterol. and only 1 out of every 3 adults with high LDL cholesterol has the condition under control.
Sadly, only 50% of people hypercholesterolemia are getting treatment.
Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.
The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.
On finding a potent compound for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, researchers examined the ashwagandha root extract anti hypercholesteremic effects in an animal model.
Selected hypercholesteremic male albino rats were given root powder of WS added to the diet at 0.75 and 1.5 gm/rat/day.
During the experiment, researchers found that the root powder of WS showed a strong anti-hypercholesteremic activity by significant decreasing levels of total lipids, cholesterol, and triglycerides, in blood plasma.
Furthermore, WS also reduced the levels of cholesterol by a significant increasing plasma HDL-cholesterol levels, HMG-CoA reductase activity and bile acid content of the liver.
Moreover, lipid-peroxidation associated with liver stress was inhibited by WS administration in hypercholesteremic animals, compared to other normal counterparts.
Based on the findings, researchers said, " it appeared that WS root powder is also effective in normal subjects for decreasing lipid profiles".
Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb for the treatment of hypercholesterolemia, pending the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Pancreatin, the Mixture of Amylase, Lipase, and Protease Improves the Absorption of Fat, Protein, and Energy In Patients with Pancreatic Insufficiency
By Kyle J. Norton
The pancreas is an oblong flattened gland in the digestive and endocrine systems located in the abdomen. By secreting pancreatic juice into the small intestine, the pancreas helps to break down carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids.
Traditional Chinese medicine views the pancreas, as a vital organ that is responsible for the absorption of foods' qi and nutrients before passing them to other organs to nourish our body.
More precisely, the functions of the pancreas including
* Production of enzymes digest fat, protein, and
carbohydrates.
* production of juices combined with juices from the intestines helps to do the job of breaking down protein, carbohydrates, and fat, therefore, it plays an important role in maintaining good health.
* Production of insulin, which is important in regulating the amount of sugar or glucose in the blood.
Pancreatic insufficiency is a medical condition in which the pancreas is not able to produce and/or transport enough digestive enzymes to break down food in the intestine.
Two of the most common causes of pancreatic insufficiency (EPI) are cystic fibrosis and chronic pancreatitis.
Other diseases associated with the condition are irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), peptic ulcer disease, gallbladder disease, and inflammatory bowel problems.
Conventionally, depending on the severity of pancreatic insufficiency, the main treatment is to replace the levels of a pancreatic enzyme using pancreatic enzyme replacement therapy, or PERT.
Pancreatin, are a commercial mixture of amylase, lipase, and protease.
In finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of pancreatic diseases, researchers elucidated the effects of neutral sterols and short-chain fatty acids on high-lipase pancreatin in Japanese patients with pancreatic insufficiency whose dietary fat consumption is low.
The study included 15 patients with chronic pancreatitis complicated by steatorrhea who consumed an average of 48 g of dietary fats a day and were given 3 g of high-lipase pancreatin (lipase, 379,800 USP U/g), at each meal (the total daily dose is 9 g) for a mean duration of 28.5 days.
According to the fecal output and fecal fat neutral sterol, bile acid, and short-chain fatty acid excretion analysis,
* Pancreatin administration resulted in significant reductions (P < 0.01) in fecal output (from 243.2 to 149.1 g), excretion of fecal fat,
* Furthermore, animal sterols (from 816.3 to 604.6 mg), and short-chain fatty acids were reduced (from 12.3 to 3.9 g), and (from 52.6 to 18.5 mM), respectively.
Interestingly, the administration of pancreatin showed no marked changes in fecal excretion of beta-sitosterol (a plant sterol), bile acids, or the hydroxy fatty acid fraction.
In other words, Pancreatin improved patients with pancreatic insufficiency to absorb fat, protein, and energy.
Taken altogether, beta-Sitosterol may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of obesity-related chronic inflammation, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.

#Antioxidant #Tocopherols Protect the Elderly Eyes Against the Onset of Age-Related Macular Degeneration, Scientists Say
By Kyle J. Norton
Age-related diseases are medical conditions associated with the increase of age.
Most recently age-related diseases in the elderly are cardiovascular diseases and macular degeneration.
Cardiovascular diseases are a group of conditions triggered by the abnormal function of the heart and blood vessels abnormality.
Age-related macular degeneration is a medical condition that causes irreversible blurring of the central vision in people over age 60.
In other words, AMD may cause significant visual disability.
Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.
The elderly at the early stage of age-related macular degeneration is asymptomatic. However, some patients may experience symptoms of slightly blurred central vision. Most cases of the early stage of AMD were diagnosed during routine eye health examinations.
Over time, age-related macular degeneration may affect the vision including the reading as the blurred area increases in size.
Advanced age-related macular degeneration has been found to induce irreversible blindness and visual impairment, according to epidemiological studies.
According to statistics, approximately 11 million people in the US have some form of age-related macular degeneration. The risk of getting advanced age-related macular degeneration increases from 2% for those ages 50-59 to nearly 30% for those over the age of 75.
Besides aging, some researchers suggest that other factors such as smoking, family history, gender, race, sun exposure, diet, and obesity also increase the risk of AMD developing.
Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, seed or nut oils, etc.
On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of degenerative diseases, researchers examined the effect of β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols scavenging free radical and cation radicals of another form of vitamin A-retinal against the onset of age-related macular degeneration.
According to the analysis, β-, γ-, and δ-tocopherols showed a significant in scavenging of cation radicals of retinal, followed by retinoic acid, (0.03 to 5.6) × 109 M-1·s-1, and retinol, (0.08 to 1.6) × 108 M-1·s-1.
Trolox is substantially less efficient at scavenging retinoid cation radicals than α-tocopherol and urate, but it is more efficient at scavenging the cation radicals of retinoic acid and retinol than δ-tocopherol.
These scavenging activities suggest that tocopherols can effectively compete with amino acids and proteins for retinoid cation radicals, thereby protecting these important biomolecules from oxidation.
Based on the results, researchers said, "tocopherols can diminish the oxidative damage to the skin and retina and thereby protect from skin photosensitivity and the development and/or progression of changes in blinding retinal diseases such as Stargardt's disease and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)".
Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing the risk of age-related macular degeneration, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose and acute liver toxicity.
