Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Anti Diabetes Functional Remedy

By  Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a medicinal plant for the treatment of diabetes with no side effects, according to the studies.

Diabetes is a medical and chronic condition characterized by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes is a result of abnormally and chronically high levels of sugar (glucose) in the blood. Insulin resistance is a hallmark of diabetes. The disease is either caused by cells in pancreas died off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol.

Insulin receptors are areas on the outer part of a cell that allow the cell to bind with insulin in the blood. When the receptors are clogged up, the cell can not take glucose (sugar) from the blood and use it for energy.

Researchers do not know what causes insulin resistance in diabetic patients. However, researchers do know that long-term intake of a poor diet with high saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food is one of many risk factors associated with clogged up the insulin receptors sites, leading to high blood glucose.

Dr. David Hefner in the concern of the Western diet linked to type 2 diabetes, wrote, "The researchers surveyed 42,000 men over a 12-year period. The men's eating habits were divided into two groups: those who followed a Western diet and those who followed a "prudent" diet with fruit, vegetables, whole grain, fish and poultry. "Over the course of the study ... 1,321 new cases of Type 2 diabetes were diagnosed".

These results clearly suggested that by changing to a healthy diet pattern with high fruits and vegetables and reducing the intake of saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed food, diabetes is preventable.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and for the treatment of urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The herbal plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

On finding a natural formula for the treatment of diabetic symptoms that leads to the investigated 7 plants and a herbal mixture used for the traditional treatment of diabetes in streptozotocin diabetic mice conducted by the University of Ulster.

In streptozotocin diabetic mice, the formula was supplied as 6.25% by weight of the diet for 9 days.

The consumption of diets containing bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi), significantly reduced the excessive hunger and abnormally large intake of solids and excessive thirst or excess water drinking associated with streptozotocin diabetes.

However, other herbal plants in the herbal formula such as bayberry (Cinnamomum tamala), meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria), Senna (Cassia occidentalis) and the herbal mixture did not alter these parameters.

Bearberry, mistletoe, and tarragon retarded body weight loss, reduced symptoms of diabetes without significantly altered plasma glucose or insulin concentrations.

The results suggested that only bearberry, goldenseal, mistletoe, and tarragon can counter some of the symptoms of streptozotocin diabetes without affecting glycemic control.

Taken altogether, bearberry (Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) may be used as a functional remedy for the  treatment of some diabetic symptoms, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter in a human study

Herbal Aloe vera, the Anti Primary Glioblastoma Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Aloe vera may process a strong implication in reducing the risk of primary glioblastoma, according to studies.

Primary glioblastoma is considered the most aggressive cancer that begins within the brain. Cancer may arise de novo, meaning they begin as a Grade IV tumor with no evidence.

According to the statistic, the median survival time of primary glioblastoma is approximately 3 months without medical treatment. Glioblastomas represent about 15% of all primary brain tumors.

Due to the rapid growth of the tumor, patients diagnosed with primary glioblastoma experience brain swelling and increased brain pressure, leading to symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and severe headaches and localized symptoms depending on the location of the tumor.

Radiation and chemotherapy are the most common forms of treatment for patients with glioblastoma particularly, in a tumor that cannot be removed with surgery.

Increased in age, and genetic preposition are the 2 most common risk factors of the diseases. Dr. Athanassios P. Kyritsis, in the concern of the rapid progression of glioblastoma, wrote, "Scientific evidence during the last few years has revealed several constitutive genetic abnormalities that may influence glioma formation".

And, "These germline abnormalities are manifested as either gene polymorphisms or hemizygous mutations of key regulatory genes that are involved either in DNA repair or in apoptosis".

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

The herbal plant has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.

Researchers on the finding a natural compound for the treatment of cancer examined the anti-brain cancer effect of Aloe-emodin isolated from the leaves of Aloe vera in human U87 malignant glioma cells.

Injection of Aloe-emodin exerted a significant apoptotic activity and induced proliferation in a time- and dose-dependent.

The percentage of viable U87 cells was also deceased substantial via the induction of apoptosis.

The formation of apoptotic bodies was observed by the confocal microscope by Annexin V-FITC/PI staining.

Aloe-emodin inhibits the human U87 malignant glioma cells, was attributed to the arrested the cell cycle in the S phase and promoted the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential in U87 cells.

In order to reveal the inhibitory efficacy mechanisms of Aloe-emodin against human U87 malignant glioma cells, researchers at the University of South Florida, Tampa, examined the effects of the bioactive compound through the aspects of the cell cycle, cell proliferation and protein kinase C (PKC) during glioma growth and development.

In cell cycle arrest, according to the flow cytometry assay, Aloe-emodin delayed the number of cells entering and exiting DNA synthesis (S) phase in both SVG and U-373MG cells, a strong indication that Aloe-emodin may inhibit S phase progression.

In cell viability assay, SVG and U-373MG glioma cell were highly sensitive to the application of Aloe-emodin.

Furthermore, injection of Aloe-emodin-induced decreased proliferation,  sustained at 48-96 hours.

Exposure of SVG and U-373MG glioma cells to aloe-emodin suppressed PKC activity in the promotion of cancer cell proliferation by reduced the protein content of most of the PKC enzymes.

Moreover, Aloe-emodin inhibited cancer growth was also associated with the activation of a protein in programming cell death.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera processed a major bioactive compound Aloe-emodin may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary therapy for treatment of brain cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi, the Potential Anti Gastric/ Stomach Cancer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a herbal remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer with no side effects, according to studies.

Gastric cancer or stomach cancer is a condition characterized by the abnormal growth of cells in the stomach tissue.

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the stomach tissue.

At stage 0, due to the gastric cancer cells was restricted or completely contained within the innermost layer of the lining, patients may not experience any symptoms.

However, at the later stage, the cancer cells can travel a distance away from the stomach to infect other tissue and organ, leading to secondary metastasis. If the tumor grows large enough, it may suppress the nearby blood vessels and nerve cells, causing blood leaked into the stomach and localized severe pain.

Besides common symptoms of cancers, patients with gastric cancer also experience some specific symptoms such as persistent abdominal (belly) pain., vague discomfort in the abdomen, a sense of fullness in the upper abdomen after eating a small meal and heartburn or indigestion.

If you are having some of the above symptoms, please check with your doctor to rule out the gastric cancer possibility.

Although there are many risk factors involved in the onset of the disease, such as family history, Helicobacter pylori infection, smoking, genetic preposition, certain stomach conditions, previous stomach surgery and type A blood, some researchers suggested that most common cause of gastric cancer in the Western world is the Western diet-related disease.

Dr. Bertuccio P, the lead scientist at the Istituto di Ricerche Farmacologiche Mario Negri, in the concern of diet pattern in the risk of gastric cancer wrote, " An unfavorable role on GC emerged for the 'Western/unhealthy' dietary pattern, with an OR of 1.51 (95% CI: 1.21-1.89)" and "A favorable role on GC emerged for the 'Prudent/healthy', with an odds ratio (OR) of 0.75 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.63-0.90], for the highest versus the lowest category".

The results strongly indicated the risk of gastric cancer is substantially higher in the Western diet group compared to the lower risk of a healthy diet.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi is one of the species of Bearberry, in the genus Arctostaphylos, belonging to the family Ericaceae, native to northern North America, Asia, and Europe.

The herb plant has been used in traditional medicine as a diuretic agent and to treat urinary problems, including bladder infections, kidney infection, kidney stone, pelvic pain, etc.

The plant contains arbutin, ursolic acid, tannic acid, gallic acid, some essential oil and resin, hydroquinones tannins, phenolic glycosides, and flavonoids.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the treatment of gastric cancer, researchers at the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine examined the effects of ursolic acid isolated from bearberry (Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) against the pathogenesis of gastric cancer characterized by excessive proliferation, abnormal differentiation, and reduced apoptosis.

Ursolic acid, extracted from traditional Chinese medicine bearberry, inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation and induced apoptosis.

Further assessment of anti-gastric cancer, researchers discovered that ursolic acid exhibited apoptotic activity through cancer cell degradation observed in the gastric cancer BGC-823 cells.

In other words, the efficacy is associated with a translocation of cofilin-1 protein that activates the function of cytochrome c in program cell death from the mitochondria to the cytoplasm.

These results suggested that ursolic acid activated the function of proteins (the caspase cascade) associated with the cell death and apoptotic pathway.

Where Mitochondria are the major organelles involved in the biochemical execution of apoptosis

Dr. the lead scientist, after taking into account co and confounders said, "mitochondrial translocation of cofilin-1 might play a crucial role in the promotion of apoptosis and might be a key target for future treatment of human gastric cancer".

Taken altogether, Bearberry (herbal Arctostaphylos uva-ursi) processed a major compound of ursolic acid may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with other primary medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

However, intake of ursolic acid as a supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Aloe Vera Improves the Function of Immune System with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural ingredient for the enhancement of the immune system with no side effects, according to studies.

The immune system is the set of cells associated with the activity against antigens or infectious agents.
It is one of the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Immune dysfunction is a chronic condition, depending on the parts of the immune system affected.

There are 2 types of immune dysfunction. The underactive immune system is also known as weakened immune system  People with the underactive immune system are susceptible to infection, recurrent infections, autoimmune disorders, damage to heart, lungs, nervous system or digestive tract, increased risk of cancer, malnutrition, and death from serious infection.

On the other hand, the active immune system is also known as autoimmune diseases. In this case, patients suffer diseases associated with the immune system attacks the body tissue.

Immunomodulation is a process in which an immune response is altered to the desired level. In other words, under the immunomodulatory effect, the immune system is responding correctly to the desire of the body, regardless of types of immune dysfunction.

Dr. Jeffrey A. Bluestone, the lead scientist in the study "Current and Future Immunomodulation Strategies to Restore Tolerance in Autoimmune Diseases" wrote, "Considerable progress has been made in the immunomodulation of autoimmune diseases and the understanding of the complex molecular and cellular pathways targeted by novel treatments".

And "... a number of immunotherapies have become the standard of care and greatly improved the clinical outcome and quality of life of patients with some autoimmune diseases".

These results strongly suggested that immunomodulation can be used for the prevention and treatment of under and overactive immune function.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

The herbal plant has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits. Aloe vera has been used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc. It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.

With an aim to find the pharmacological potential of Aloe arborescens Miller leaf components against the immune dysfunction, researchers examined the to immune modulatory effects on the Sparus aurata fibroblast cell line SAF-1.

According to the application of Aloe extract at different concentrations (1.2-4.8 mg ml(-1)) for various times (24-72 h) for the treatment of the cells, the lowest concentration did not provoke any cellular damage observable by SEM and did not affect ATP amounts after 24 and 48 h, while even induced a significant increase over controls after 72 h.

However, the Aloe extract at a concentration of 1.2 mg ml(-1)) exerted a powerful immune stimulation in exhibiting an effect on interconnected genes in the SAF-1 cells involved in different aspects of the immune responses.

Researchers at the end of the experiment wrote, "A. arborescens to prevent or oppose bacterial and viral fish diseases and to face, as an alternative strategy based on natural plant extracts, the growing unwillingness to rely upon standard solutions involving antibiotics or antimicrobial chemicals".

Further, the investigation of the effect of an aloe polymannose multi-nutrient complex (APMC) formula on cognitive and immune functioning over 12 months among adults diagnosed with AD.

The participants were given to 4 teaspoons of the formula per day. The results were assessed at baseline and 12 months.

The formula demonstrated a significantly improved at 9 and 12 months compared to baseline, and 46% of our sample showed clinically-significant improvement (≥4-point change) from baseline to 12 months, according to the mean ADAS-cog cognition score.

Participants showed a significant decrease in protein associated with immune response in the activation of proinflammatory cytokines with few, temporary adverse reactions.

In other words, the formula displayed strong immune modulatory effects in regulating the immune responses on patients with AD.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera mMedical Advisor Journals, Kyle J. Norton Site, Health Tips for Better Living and Living Healthay be considered a functional remedy in regulation and adjustment of the immune system against stimuli, including allergens, infectious pathogens with no side effect.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Potential Anti Prostate Cancer Functional Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal Aloe vera may be used for the prevention and treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, some scientists suggested.

Prostate cancer is slow-growing cancer characterized by irregular cell growth in the prostate tissue.

Most cases of prostate cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissue. However, at
the advanced stage, cancerous prostate cells can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs, causing the secondary metastasis. Most often, prostate cancer spreads to the bones or lymph nodes.

Most prostate cancers may be detected during the physical (rectum) exams.

According to the statistic, 1 man in 9 will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. 6 cases in 10 are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older and the average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66.

The 5-year survival rate for most men with stage 0 and 1 prostate cancer is nearly 100%. Ninety-eight percent (98%) are alive after 10 years.

These results strongly indicated that men who are at a higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and genetic proposition should have a prostate exam taken every year.

Besides aging, other most common risk factors of prostate cancer include family history, ethnicity, genetic preposition, exposure to agent orange and eating habits.

Dr. Wambui G. Gathirua-Mwangi, the lead author in the cancer team in the joint study led by the Indiana University, wrote, "Epidemiologic studies have overall showed that the habitual consumption of a diet high in saturated fat, well-done meats, and calcium is associated with an increased risk of advanced prostate cancer".

And, "measure the nutrients and their biochemical indicators, the risk of advanced prostate cancer, which is fatal and thus clinically significant, may be reduced by dietary modification or chemoprevention".

The finding strongly indicated a healthy diet high in fruits and vegetables and whole grain and low in
saturated and trans fat, red meat and processed foods have a decreased risk of prostate cancer.

The ten main areas of chemical constituents of Aloe vera include Aloe-Emodin, amino acids, anthraquinones, enzymes, minerals, vitamins, lignins, monosaccharide, polysaccharides, salicylic acid, saponins, and sterols.

On finding a natural compound or ingredient for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effects, researchers at the Korea Research Institute of Bioscience and Biotechnology evaluated phytochemical Aloe-emodin, a bioactive compound isolated from the Aloe vera against prostate cancer on the protein

Aloe-emodin inhibited both proliferation and anchorage-independent growth of PC3 cells.

The efficacy of the inhibited was found to involve proteins that exhibit androgen-refractory prostate cell proliferation and anchorage-independent growth through cancer cell metabolism.

Furthermore, Aloe-emodin demonstrated a significant effect against the activation of a protein (mTORC2) in stimulating the cancer cell proliferation and migration.

Interestingly, researchers also found that Aloe-emodin also inhibits the gene associated with tumor promoter, namely Protein kinase C alpha (PKCα).

Expression of protein kinase C alpha (PKCα) has a strong implication in cancer metastasis and poor prognosis.

In other words, Aloe-emodin displays significant anti-prostate cancer properties by inhibiting cancer cell proliferation, migration through binging to proteins associated with them.

In vivo, Aloe-emodin also exhibited tumor suppression effects in an athymic nude mouse model.

Dr. Liu K after taking into account co and confounders said, "aloe-emodin suppresses prostate cancer progression by targeting mTORC2".

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of prostate cancer with no side effect, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of supplement Aloe-emodin should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdoses induced acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Anti Skin Aging Functional Remedy with NO Side Effects, According to Studies

By Kyle J, Norton

Scientists may have found a natural and potent herbal plant used for the delay of skin aging, according to the studies.

Skin aging is a natural and biological process of the human which can be stopped.

Long-term free radical damage to the skin through oxidative stress is the major cause of skin aging.

Exposure to the sun (photoaging) and pollution, and loss of subcutaneous support (fatty tissue between your skin and muscle) are some of the risk factors associated with the skin aging.

Some researchers suggested that skin expression may be considered as a refect of the general health of an individual. An unhealthy skin due to skin nutritional deficiency has been a target by the dermatology and cosmetic industries.

Dr.Silke K. Schagen in the study that links between nutrition and skin aging, said, "Vitamins, carotenoids, tocopherols, flavonoids and a variety of plant extracts have been reported to possess potent antioxidant properties and have been widely used in the skin care industry either as topically applied agents or oral supplements in an attempt to prolong youthful skin appearance".

The results strongly suggested that by providing enough nutrition to the skin needs, extrinsic causes of skin aging can be delayed

In skin wrinkle, according to the results of the studies by the Monash University, Melbourne, a high intake of certain food groups are associated with the speeding up of wrinkle, including meat, dairy, and butter. High intake of vegetables, legumes and olive oil appeared to be protective against cutaneous actinic damage.

It is also one of many popular herbs studied in scientific ways with some conflicting results.

They all work together in a synergistic way to create healing and health-giving benefits, according to Gertrude Baldwin in the article of THE BENEFITS OF THE USE OF ALOE VERA IN HERBAL PREPARATIONS.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient or whole food for the delay of skin aging researchers at the Seoul National University Boramae Hospital examined the effect of aloe gel on the clinical signs and biochemical changes of aging skin.

The experiment included 30 healthy female subjects over the age of 45 given 2 different doses (low-dose: 1,200 mg/d, high-dose: 3,600 mg/d) of aloe vera gel supplementation for 90 days with their baseline status as a control.

Aloe gel intake, the facial wrinkles improved significantly (p<0.05) in both groups, and facial elasticity improved in the lower-dose group.

The injection of the gel also increased the skin photoprotection and the type I procollagen mRNA levels in controlling the rate of procollagen synthesis.

The results were accompanied by the matrix (MMP-1) mRNA levels associated with the breaking down the interstitial collagens, types I, II, and III, particularly in the higher-dose group.

Type I procollagen was substantially increased throughout the dermis in Aloe treatment of the group.

Dr. Cho S, the lead scientist said, "Aloe gel significantly improves wrinkles and elasticity in photoaged human skin, with an increase in collagen production in the photoprotected skin and a decrease in the collagen-degrading MMP-1 gene expression".

The Kyung Hee University Global Campus in the investigation of the effects of Aloe vera on ultraviolet (UV) irradiation induces photo-damage of the skin, which in turn causes depletion of the dermal extracellular matrix and chronic alterations in skin structure.

By the comparison of the baby Aloe shoot extract (BAE, immature aloe extract), which is from the one-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, and adult aloe shoot extract (AE), which is from the four-month-old shoots of Aloe vera, protective effect on UVB-induced skin photoaging in normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDFs). researchers found that NHDF cells treated UVB-irradiation suppressed the matrixes associated with the breaking down the interstitial collagens, types I, II, and III, and the levels of inflammatory cytokines similar to that of the above study, compared to the AE-treated cells.

BAE treatment elevated type I procollagen which was reduced in photodamaged skin. mediated by the increasing levels of TGF-β1 levels which is a multifunctional cytokine.

The findings clearly suggested that herbal Aloe vera may be considered an anti-aging functional remedy with no side effects.

Herbal Aloe Vera, the Promising Topical Wound Healing Functional Remedy, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Herbal aloe vera may be used for speeding up the skin wound healing with no side effects, some researchers suggested.

Wound healing is the natural process of repair of skin damage and injury.

The process of skin healing in human is gone through several stages. First, the immune system after sensing the skin wound activates the immune first line defense stimulating the constriction of the blood vessel to reduce blood flow, activate platelets, and many different clotting factors to cover the wound area.

Then, the white blood cells also up-regulate the proteins associated with the production of proinflammatory cytokines to the site of infection to kill off all the invasive organisms.

In most cases, due to overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines, patients may experience symptoms of fever, and localized pain, redness, and swelling.

Furthermore, the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines in some case can cause the death of nearby healthy cells, leading to the formation of irreversible scars, as seen in the liver.

After the inflammatory phase, the new blood vessels are formed and the new granulation tissues are built.

The final phase of the wound healing is involved in the remodeling of collagen from type III to type I cellular activity reduces.

If the process of skin healing is interrupted, it may lead to abnormal cell membrane repair, a major cause of skin scars.

MG53 is a protein involved in tissue repair and regeneration and also considered a facilitator of rapid injury repair, a mediator of cell migration, and a modulator of myofibroblast differentiation during wound healing. The defection and down-regulation of MG53 protein may delay wound healing and abnormal scarring.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan.

It has become very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits.

On finding the natural compound or remedy for speeding up the treatment of wound healing, researchers examined the efficacy of aloe vera through searching the data of online medical literature.

Only controlled clinical trials for burn healing were included. There were no restrictions on any language of publication. Only 4 Four with a total of 371 patients were included in this review.

According to the meta-analysis using the duration of wound healing as an outcome measure, the healing time of the aloe vera group was 8.79 days shorter than those in the control group.

The cumulative evidence support that aloe vera can be an effective intervention used in burn wound healing for first to second-degree burns.

Furthermore, in order to maximize the effect of Aloe vera in wound healing, researchers examined the formulate and optimize a herbal gel of Aloe vera extract containing Carbopol 934 as a gelling agent.

During the observation of differences in wound healing between the various treatments when compared to the control group. researchers found that tissue hyperplasia was lower in the control group compared to the other treated groups.

In animals group treated with gel, exerted an 80.14% healing up to 14(th) day compared to the untreated group I (control) animals of showed 52.68%.

Control group animals also showed inflammation and pus formation up to 5(th) day of study, compared to none in the treatment group.

These results supported the use of topical application of Carbopol 934 gel containing Aloe vera extract on the healing of skin wounds.

Taken altogether, herbal Aloe vera may be considered a functional topical remedy for the treatment of skin wound, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Turmeric, the Natural Remedy for the Treatment of Metabolic Syndrome (MS)

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural herbal remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome with no side effects, according to studies.

Metabolic syndrome is a cluster of conditions associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease and diabetes including too much fat around the waist, high blood sugar and cholesterol and pressure, high triglycerides  and low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

If you have any 3 of the aforementioned conditions, you are at a higher risk of having CVD and diabetes.

The exact causes of metabolic syndrome are unidentified. However, researchers suggested eating too many calories, particularly in high-fat diet, physical inactivity, and excessive weight gain are some of the most common and prevalent factors in elevated the risk of metabolic syndrome in the Western world.

Most people with metabolic syndrome do not experience any symptoms until the condition progression into a later stage, overtimes, leading to insulin resistance and plagues built-up on the wall of the arteries.

Other risk factors increased the risk of metabolic syndrome include aging, race, family history, long-term hormone imbalance such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), gestational diabetes.

Some researchers in the concern about the widespread metabolic syndrome in obese patients suggested that the promotion of the Western diet over the past many decades may be one of the culprits in inducing the onset of metabolic syndrome.

Dr. the lead scientist in the cardiovascular disease team said, "The cellular mechanisms of metabolic syndrome include mitochondrial overload, de novo lipogenesis, hepatic insulin resistance, and hyperinsulinemia, reactive oxygen species formation, endoplasmic reticulum stress, and the unfolded protein response"

And, "Specific alterations of the Western Diet uniquely drive this process and are unrelated to calories. These alterations include too little fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients, and too many omega-6 fatty acids, trans-fats, branched-chain amino acids, ethanol, and fructose. The food industry invokes personal responsibility while denying any corporate responsibility and citing scientific, policy, and social arguments. However, their responses obfuscate the scientific truth in order to obviate their culpability".

The findings suggested that obesity is a marker of the metabolic syndrome rather than a cause, However, if you are obese, your risk of metabolic syndrome increases substantially.

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and to treat flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.

In the urgency to find a natural remedy for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers compared the clinical efficacy of black seeds and turmeric alone and its co-administration in lower doses among patients with metabolic syndrome (MS).

The double-blind-randomized-controlled trial included healthy males (n=250), who screened positive for MS, were randomized to either black seeds (1.5g/day), turmeric (2.4g/day), its combination (900mg black seeds and 1.5g turmeric/day) or placebo for 8 weeks.

At 4 weeks, compared to baseline, turmeric alone significantly improved a number of certain conditions of metabolic syndrome such as body-mass-index (BMI), body-fat-percent (BF%), waist circumference (WC).

Combined with black seeds, turmeric improved all parameters except HDL-cholesterol with lower fasting blood glucose (FBG) and LDL-cholesterol, compared to placebo.

At the 8 weeks, turmeric reduced LDL-cholesterol and c-reactive protein (CRP), a marker of inflammation, and the combination group with 60% dose of the individual herbs showed an improvement in all parameters compared to baseline.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The combination of Black seeds and Turmeric can, therefore, be recommended with lifestyle modification as a starting point for patients with MetS to halt its future complications and progression".

In order to confirm the efficacy of black seeds used combined with turmeric for the treatment of metabolic syndrome, researchers once against conducted a joint study using a fructose-fed rat model of MS.

in vivo, different doses of black seeds and turmeric, individually and in combination, were administered to fructose-fed rats for up to 6 weeks with characteristic features of MS.

At 3 weeks of the treatment, turmeric lowered low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, compared to coadministration which reduced both high blood pressure and hypertriglyceridemia.

At 6 weeks, the coadministration of both herbs, at half the doses of individual herbs, was the most effective in preventing hypertension, hyperglycemia, dyslipidemia, hyperinsulinemia, and endothelial dysfunction compared to those of individual herbs.

The results strongly suggested that turmeric used alone or combined with black seeds may be considered a functional food or formula for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome by inhibiting the conditions in the cluster of the MS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in form of supplement should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Ginger, the Best Natural Remedy with Anti Colon Cancer Potential

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a kitchen spice which processes a potential to treat colon cancer, according to studies.

Colon cancer is a medicinal condition associated with irregular cell growth in the colon tissues.

According to the statistics provided by the Stat-Canada, 1 in 16 Canadian men and 1 in 18 women will develop colorectal cancer over their lifetime. The cancer is the third leading cause of death behind prostate and lung cancer.

Every year, approximately 26,,000 Canadians are diagnosed with colorectal cancer, represented 13% of all new cancer cases.

Colon cancer is a slow growth cancer, therefore, most colon cancer is detected in the later stage after the experiencing symptoms of blood in your stool or an ongoing change in bowel habits. In other words, only 39% of colorectal cancer is detected in the early stage.

The 5-year survival rate of localized stage colorectal cancer is 90%.

The cause of colon cancer is a result of the alternation of cell DNA. Researchers do not why? people with the same health conditions and family history, some are susceptible to the onset of the disease, while others do not.

Although there are many factors associated with the onset of colon cancer, aging may be one of the most prevalent risks. It probably is due to the disease taken over 10 to 15 years before the patients experience some related symptoms. In other words, according to epidemiological studies, the majority of colorectal cancers occur in people older than 50.

"70% of colorectal cancer is diagnosed in patients over 65. Evaluation of the influence of age and comorbidity on survival and cause of death in a non-selected population".

And, "In colon cancer patient age and comorbidity predict survival. This represents possible bias or a reduced survival benefit of treatment, and is an indication that colon cancer is not the prognosis defining illness in the majority of patients".

The result strongly suggested that colon cancer affects mostly the aging population over 65 years of age. The simultaneous presence of two chronic diseases or conditions in elderly patients is associated with the poor survival rate.

Ginger (Zingiber officinale) or ginger root, the second superfood used for thousands of years by mankind, is the genus Zingiber, belonging to the family Zingiberaceae, native to Tamil.

The root has been used in traditional and Chinese medicine for the treatment of dyspepsia, gastroparesis, constipation, edema, difficult urination, colic, etc.

Researchers on the finding a bioactive compound to replace the chemo medication which induces serious side effects to cancer patients examined 6-Gingerol, a natural component of ginger, anti-colon cancer activity.

Injection of 6-gingerol treatment significantly reduced the cell viability of human colon cancer cell, LoVo, in a dose-dependent manner.

Furthermore, 6-gingerol induced significant G2/M phase arrest and had a slight influence on the sub-G1 phase in LoVo cells, according to the flow cytometric analysis and observed by the reduced levels of a protein involved cancer cell cycle.

Moreover, 6-gingerol also induced cancer cell apoptosis by elevating the functions of levels of tumor suppressive genes and exhibiting cytotoxicity through elevated intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS).

These results strongly suggested 6-gingerol should be beneficial to the treatment of colon cancer, according to Dr. Lin CB and colleagues.

In order to understand more the effect of ginger on colon cancer, researchers investigated a novel prodrug of aspirin, [6]-gingerol aspirinate (GAS) against colon cancer.

GAS exerted enhanced anti-cancer properties in vitro and superior gastroprotective effects in mice. by suppressing the enzymes involved mediation of tumor repopulation.

Importantly, GAS was also able to survive stomach acid and decomposed in intestinal linings or after absorption to simultaneously release ASA and [6]-gingerol.

Dr. Yingdong Zhu, the lead scientist said in the final report, "Our results demonstrate the enhanced anticancer properties along with gastroprotective effects of GAS, suggesting that GAS can be a therapeutic equivalent for ASA in inflammatory and proliferative diseases without the deleterious effects on stomach mucosa".

Taken altogether, ginger processed a highly active bio-compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with primary medicine for the treatment of colon cancer with no side effects, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, the Anti Chronic Mild Stress and Arteriosclerosis Natural Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found a natural remedy which processes a potential to treat chronic mild stress, according to studies.

Acute stress is a natural and emotional reaction that arises in response to a terrifying or traumatic event or witnessing a traumatic event. People react to acute stress differently depending on life experiences.

Chronic stress, a medical condition is a result of a person who can not respond to emotional pressure properly, leading to traumatic stress which he or she can not control.

Untreated ongoing chronic stress has been found to exacerbate many serious health conditions, including depression, anxiety, and personality disorders.

Epidemiological studies suggested that certain physical health problems are also associated with patients with long-term stress, including heart disease, high blood pressure, abnormal heart rhythms, heart attacks, and stroke.

There are many risk factors involving the onset of chronic stress. However, job-related chronic stress has been found in most American adults in the Western world.

The American Institute of Stress in examing the chronic stress in the American adults wrote, "Numerous studies show that job stress is far and away the major source of stress for American adults and that it has escalated progressively over the past few decades. Increased levels of job stress as assessed by the perception of having little control but lots of demands have been demonstrated to be associated with increased rates of heart attack, hypertension, and other disorders".

According to the American Workplace VII statistics, 80% of workers feel stress on the job, nearly half say they need help in learning how to manage stress and 42% say their coworkers need such help.

Researchers on finding natural ingredients or whole food for the treatment of chronic mild stress (CMS), a major contribution to atherosclerosis in the previous study examined the effects of 6-gingerol (6-Gin), a phenolic component of ginger (Zingiber officinale)anti chronic stress activity.

6-gingerol (6-Gin) has long been found to process numerous pharmacological properties, such as anti-inflammatory and cardioprotective effects, according to epidemiological studies.

CMS ApoE-/- mice used in the study were given high-fat diet (HFD) to induce the development of atherosclerosis in-fed before administrating 6-Gin.

Mice were exposed to CMS for 20 weeks, at week 5, they were fed with a high-fat diet (HFD), then received 6-Gin (20 mg/kg/day, intragastrically) treatment.

CMS before application of high-fat diet exerted a significant effect in reducing body weight gain, sucrose preference, and locomotor activity, the expression of some of the core symptoms of depression.

Furthermore, CMS mice fed with a high-fat diet (HFD) after week 5 also showed the increased plaque formation, elevation of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterin, and proinflammatory cytokines including TNF-α, IL-1β, and IL-6, all indicated the development of atherosclerotic lesions.

However, injection of 6-Gin not only reduced the expression induced by high-fat diet but modulated the function of enzymes activated glucose and fatty acid uptake and oxidation, catalyzed the committed step in fatty acid synthesis, produced cholesterol and other isoprenoids, particularly the lipid synthesis in the liver tissues.

These results suggested the role of ginger in the alleviated atherosclerotic lesions and reversed the expression levels of lipid profiles and inflammatory cytokines in stressed mice.

Dr. Wang S, the lead scientist wrote, "the antiatherosclerotic effects of 6-Gin is mediated in part by the AMPK signaling pathway, which is closely associated with cholesterol synthesis and lipid accumulation".

Where AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) plays a key role as a master regulator of cellular energy homeostasis, in response to low glucose, hypoxia, ischemia, and heat shock.

Additionally, CMS also showed an improvement of several aspects of chronic stress on the injection of 6-Gin.

The finding clearly suggested 6-Gin attenuates arteriosclerosis in ApoE-/- mice exposed to CMS and HFD, and it may be a potential therapeutic agent for the treatment of atherosclerosis similar to that of conventional medicine.

Taken altogether, ginger processed abundantly bioactive compound 6-gingerol may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary medicine for the treatment of chronic mild stress and atherosclerosis, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.

Ginger, the Natural Antibiofilm Remedy with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have a kitchen remedy which processes a potential to improve the immune function against infection, some studies suggested.

A biofilm is a system that can be adapted internally to environmental conditions by its inhabitants. In other words, biofilm-forming from bacteria is one of the common forms of bacterial infection affecting up to 80% of human bacterial infections.

In biology, biofilm used by the bacteria as a natural defense mechanism of bacteria to survive under harsh environments, by attaching to a solid surface in a large community, including the skin, teeth, and mucosa.

Bacterial initiates biofilm formation with an aim to greatly enhance survival in hosts and cause chronic infections, leading to long-term inflammation and tissue damages.

The formation of a biofilm of bacteria may go through 2 stages, the adhesion phase is the stage that the bacteria attach to the surface or accumulates on a surface, After the adhesion phase, the bacteria enter the colonial phase, where the bacteria continue to grow, leading to the formation of dense bacterial aggregates.

Dr. Li XH, the lead scientist in examing the new anti-biofilm agents, said, "In biofilms, microorganisms become much more resistant to antimicrobial treatments, harsh environmental conditions, and host immunity".

And, "Currently, it is believed over 80% of chronic infectious diseases are mediated by biofilms, and it is known that conventional antibiotic medications are inadequate at eradicating this biofilm-mediated infection".

Scientists on finding a natural compound with anti-biofilm activity for the treatment of microbial infection evaluated the ginger anti-biofilm formation effects.

Injection of ginger exerted a strong inhibition against Pseudomonas aeruginosa PA14 biofilm formation.

The anti-biofilm activiti of ginger caused a reduction of 39–56% when the ginger extract was added to the culture.

The ginger extract also decreased the production of extracellular polymeric substances, the fundamental component that determines the physiochemical properties of a biofilm, according to the chemical analysis and confocal laser scanning microscopy.

Furthermore, ginger extract formed noticeably less rugose colonies on agar plates containing Congo red and facilitated swarming motility on soft agar plates.

The ginger extract also inhibited biofilm formation in both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria.

The efficacy of ginger extract was attributed to the reduced level of a second messenger, bis-(3′-5′)-cyclic dimeric guanosine monophosphate in the induction of biofilm formation.

Also, surface biofilm cells formed with ginger extract detached more easily with surfactant than did those without ginger extract.

The results strongly support the use of ginger as a broad spectrum biofilm inhibitor, in the reduction of bacterial biofilm formation, a major cause of serious health problems.

In order to reveal more information about the ginger effect against biofilm formation, researchers examined the bioactive compounds on Candida albicans.

6-gingerol, 8-gingerol, and 6-shogaol effectively inhibited biofilm formation and 6-shogaol at 10 μg/ml significantly reduced C. albicans biofilm formation with no harming the planktonic cell growth.

Moreover,  6-gingerol and 6-shogaol inhibited hyphal growth in embedded colonies and free-living planktonic cells, and prevented cell aggregation.

Additionally,  6-gingerol and 6-shogaol reduced C. albicans virulence in a nematode infection model without causing toxicity at the tested concentrations.

Dr. Jin-Hyung Lee,, the lead scientist wrote in the final report, "These results highlight the antibiofilm and antivirulence activities of the ginger components, 6-gingerol and 6-shogaol, against a drug-resistant C. albicans strain".

Taken altogether, ginger processed a high amount of bioactive compound may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention of bacterial infection by inhibiting the biofilm activity of micro pathogens.

Ginger Reverses the Cognitive Impairment Caused by Oxidative Stress

By Kyle J. Norton

Scientists may have found  a pungent spice which processes a potential to inhibit the early onset of cognitive impairment, a major cause of neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly, according to studies.

Cognitive impairment is a medical condition characterized by a noticeable loss of cognitive abilities, involved memory and thinking skill. Cognitive impairment in the elderly is an early sign that can lead to the progression of dementia, including Alzheimer's.

The neuro impairment can be caused by brain damage due to physical impact, a medical condition such as mild stroke. In the elderly, the syndrome was associated with the build-up of plagues or tangles in the neurons that affect the cells in transmitting information to the others.

Some researchers suggested that enlargement of the brain's fluid-filled spaces and shrinkage of the hippocampus may also cause the onset of cognitive impairment.

Dr. Terry L. Davidson PhD and colleagues in examing the risk of cognitive impairment of people who follow the Western diet suggested that the Western diet may play a critic role in facilitating the widespread of cognitive impairment in the elderly in the Western world compared to the people who follow the traditional diet with a high amount of fruits and vegetables.

The doctoral team wrote, "Epidemiological studies indicate that Western diet intake, and the weight gain and obesity that it promotes, are associated not only with late-life dementia but also with poorer cognitive flexibility and inhibitory control across the lifespan".

And, " In addition, rodents maintained on a Western diet are impaired on hippocampal-dependent inhibitory learning and memory tasks and exhibit increased blood-brain barrier permeability, hippocampal inflammation, and decreased hippocampal neurogenesis and plasticity. Interference with neuroendocrine signaling may also contribute to hippocampal dysfunction".

The results strongly suggested the negative impacts of the Western diet in the initiation of a vicious cycle of progressive weight gain and cognitive decline.

Researchers on finding a natural compound for the treatment of cognitive impairment examined the ginger effect on oxidative stress in the induction of cognitive impairment.

The study included 60 participants randomly assigned to receive a placebo or standardized plant extract at doses of 400 and 800 mg once daily for 2 months.

Ginger-treated groups had significantly decreased P300 latencies, increased N100 and P300 amplitudes, and exhibited enhanced working memory.

After one month of treatment, Zingiber officinale treated group at a dose of 800 mg showed a significant increase in N100 amplitude. After two months, Zingiber officinale treated group at doses of 400 and 800 mg showed a significant increase in P300 amplitude.
Furthermore, Zinigber officinale treated group at a dose of 800 mg showed a significant increase in N100 amplitude and decreased P300 latency.

Therefore, ginger is a potential cognitive enhancer for middle-aged women.

The P300 wave is a measurable direct reaction of the brain to a certain sensory, cognitive or mechanical stimulus against cognitive dysfunction. P300 latency is found to increase in patients with Alzheimer's disease.

The increase of N100 and N300 auditory sensory gating could reflect mechanisms involved in protecting higher-order cognitive functions. P300 measurements are used to measure the increasing sensitivity to early cognitive decline or disease progression in AD patients.

In order to reveal more information about the ginger activity against cognitive impairment, researchers examined the ginger effects on healthy brains in mice.

GE administration significantly improved the ability of mice to recognize novel objects, indicating improvements in learning and memory.

GE administration led to elevated NGF levels in both the mouse hippocampus and rat glioma C6 cells.

Where nerve growth factor (NGF) is involved primarily in the growth, and maintenance, proliferation, and survival of neurons, thus improving the cognitive function.

Moreover, GE administration also resulted in phosphorylation of extracellular-signal-regulated kinase (ERK) and cyclic AMP response element-binding protein (CREB),  linking to the regulation of synaptic plasticity and memory formation revealed by Western blotting analysis.

Additionally, GE treatment significantly increased pre- and post-synaptic markers that pass nerve impulse from an axon terminal to a neuron, muscle cell, or gland cell, and synaptophysin, and PSD-95, which are related to synapse formation in the brain.

Dr. Lim S, the lead scientist in the final report wrote, "GE has a synaptogenic effect via NGF-induced ERK/CREB activation, resulting in memory enhancement".

Where The MAPK/ERK pathway is a chain of proteins in the cell that transmits information from a receptor on the surface of the cell to the DNA in the nucleus of the cell.

Taken altogether, ginger processed a high amount antioxidant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional remedy for the prevention and combined with the primary therapy for the treatment of cognitive impairment, pending to the confirmation of large sample and multicenter human study.
