Tocopherols Inhibits the Adverse Effects Osteoradionecrosis (ORN)-Induced by Radiotherapy in Patients with Head and Neck

By Kyle J. Norton

Head and neck cancer is a group of cancers found in the mouth, throat, larynx, sinuses, or salivary glands.

Most cases of head and neck cancer, at the early stage, start by the cell growth irregularly and disorderly on the surface of the inner lining in the head and neck.

At the advanced stage, patients may experience symptoms of a lump in the nose, neck or throat, with or without pain, a persistent sore throat that does not heal, trouble swallowing (dysphagia) and frequent and persistent coughing.

At this stage, cancer cells may travel a distance away from the original site to infect other healthy tissue and organs.

Most common head and neck cancer metastases are secondary skin cancer.

The exact causes of head and neck cancer are unknown. However, certain risk factors have been found to associate with the onset of the disease, including, excessive alcohol intake, smoking, infected by the HPV virus, poor oral health, race, long-term exposure to wood dust.

Some researchers suggested that people who perform oral sex before sexual intercourse is at a higher incidence of disease development as human papillomavirus (HPV) can spread during oral sex, increasing the possibility of oral cancer.

According to the statistics, in the US, HPV is the most common sexually transmitted virus.

Osteoradionecrosis is a condition associated with bone death due to exposure to radiation or radiation treatment.

The death of bone cells is a result of radiation induce-damage of the blood vessel that supplies the nutrients to the bone.

Osteoradionecrosis is a rare side effect occurred sometime after radiation therapy has ended. The complication usually occurs in the lower jaw or mandible.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the prophylactic role of pentoxifylline and tocopherol in patients who require dental extractions after radiotherapy with cancer of head and neck adverse effects osteoradionecrosis (ORN).

The retrospective study included a total of 110 patients who had radiotherapy for cancer of the head and neck.

According to the analysis of 450 dental extractions 110 patients after radiotherapy, ORN developed only in 2 patients.

However, patients had taken PVe for a mean of 12 (24) weeks preoperatively and 14 (18) weeks postoperatively showed a lower ORN incidence than normally associated with dental extractions in irradiated patients.

Based on the results, researchers said, "In patients undergoing dental extractions, after receiving radiotherapy of head and neck region, combination therapy of pentoxifylline and tocopherol are sufficiently effective".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered a supplement for reducing side effects of cancer of head and neck adverse effects osteoradionecrosis (ORN), pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Topical Turmeric Extract Processes Anti Aging Activity in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Aging is a natural and biological process that cannot be prevented.

Skin aging is one of the most visible processes which occurs constantly in our skin organ.

However, actively engaging healthy living lifestyle by increasing the intake of good healthy food such as whole grain, fruits, vegetables, beans, and legumes, etc. and reducing the consumption of harmful foods, such as saturated fat, trans fat, artificial ingredients, etc. accompanied with moderate exercise has been found to delay aging progression.

In other words, it is possible that a person has physiological younger than his or her biological age.

There many theory that explains the aging processes. According to the free radical theory, oxidative damage to the enzymes, other proteins, unsaturated fatty acids, phospholipids, DNA and RNA, etc., caused by free radical chain reaction can lead to aging of the organisms by attacking the lipid bilayers of the cell walls.

You can view other theories of aging by click this link.

There are many risk factors associated with aging and premature aging processes. Dr. Bhatt N in the assessment of the risk factors and self-perception for facial aging among the Nepalese population wrote, "Around 50% of attendees were conscious about facial health, 53% perceived their facial age as their chronological age, 39% used some facial care products, and 68% were aware of the risk factors for facial aging".

And "The major perceived risk factors were unhealthy eating habits, stress, less exercise, dehydration, diseased state, and sleeping habits. A significant association was found between increasing age, place of birth in hills or mountains and sun exposure with high wrinkling score".

Turmeric is a perennial plant in the genus Curcuma, belongings to the family Zingiberaceae, native to tropical South Asia.

The herb has been used in traditional medicine as an anti-oxidant, hypoglycemic, colorant, antiseptic, wound healing agent, and for the treatment of flatulence, bloating, and appetite loss, ulcers, eczema, inflammations, etc.
On finding a better compound for the treatment of skin aging, researchers determined the antiaging activity of Curcuma heyneana to prove its traditional use as skincare, for cosmetic and body freshness.

In vitro, according to the tested assay, the extracts showed a dose-dependent manner in the final concentration range from 62.5 to 500 µg/mL in the inhibition of free radical expression and 31.25 to 250 µg/mL for tyrosinase and collagenase.

The extract containing a high amount of curcuminoid (CUR), the active principle of Curcuma is the best antioxidant, that acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor, and collagenase inhibitor, compared to those with a low concentration of CUR.

The topical application of the crude extract also induced significant improvement effects on the UV-induced skin structure damage.

By examining the efficacy of constituent of the extracts, researchers found that total CUR content was correlated with the anti-aging activity.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The results show that C. heyneana contains antioxidant compounds and has potent anti-aging activity, indicating that it can be used as an anti-aging drug candidate or as a phyto-cosmeceutical".

Taken altogether, turmeric in form of extract may be considered supplements used for the treatment of skin aging, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of turmeric in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Proanthocyanidin (cPAC) Found in Cranberry May be Used as Repressing Antibiotic Against Resistance Gram-Negative Bacteria, Researchers Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Antibiotics are a group of conventional medicines used for the treatment of bacterial, fungal parasitic,... infection.

The medications have no effects on viral infection.

Infection is a disease caused by microorganism invasion.

After entering the body, the organisms selectively find a specific tissue or organ to start their multiplication.

Most infectious diseases can be passed from infected person to person or transmitted by bites from insects or animals.

However, the acquired infectious diseases can also be caused by ingesting contaminated food or water or being exposed to organisms in the environment.

Most organisms before having a chance to induce infection are killed off by the immune system response in the acute phase of infection, by stimulating the production of a proinflammatory cytokine.

Unfortunately, if the immune system fails to destroy the invasive organism within a set period of time, normally in a few weeks, it will adapt to the change, causing chronic infection.

Antibiotics have been found to cause digestive discomforts such as nausea, indigestion. vomiting, diarrhea, bloating. the feeling of fullness, and loss of appetite, and stomach cramping or pain, acutely.

Chronic use of antibiotics also induces more serious adverse effects, including skin rash, skin allergic reactions, upset stomach, and fungal (yeast) vaginal infections or oral thrush by weakening the immune system.

Cranberry is an evergreen dwarf shrub, genus Vaccinium, belongings to the family Ericaceae, native to Northern America and Southern Asia. Because of its health benefits, cranberry has been cultivated in some parts of the world for commercial profit and used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat wounds, urinary disorders, diarrhea, diabetes, stomach ailments, and liver problems.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers investigated the antibacterial activity of cranberry proanthocyanidin (cPAC) on resistance to tetracycline in Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

According to the tested assays, cPAC exerted a potentiating effect, both in vitro and in vivo, on a broad range of antibiotic classes against pathogenic E. coli, Proteus mirabilis, and P. aeruginosa.

cPAC demonstrated the antibacterial effect through two antibiotic resistance mechanisms, namely, selective membrane permeability, and multidrug efflux pumps.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, " The use of cPAC to potentiate antibiotics and mitigate the development of resistance could improve treatment outcomes and help combat the growing threat of antibiotic resistance".

Taken altogether, cranberry may be considered an adjunct therapy as an antibiotic against bacterial pathogens, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Moronic Acid Found in Rhus javanica, Mistletoe,..., A Promising Antidiabetic Antioxidant and Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic low-grade inflammatory condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Inflammation is a natural defense of the immune system that protects the body against the insult from foreign invasion.

Acute inflammation occurs quickly or within the hours and lasts a few days or weeks and the damaged tissues are healed themselves after all pathogens are killed off.

However, if the immune system can not completely eradicate all invaders in the acute phase of infection, it will compromise, leading to chronic low-grade inflammation, a major cause of cardiovascular disease, arthritis, and diabetes.

Chronic inflammation is a low-grade inflammation caused by the inability of the immune system to eliminate the invasive pathogens that occurred in the acute phase of infection.

Any inflammation that lasts more than 8 weeks is considered chronic inflammation.

Believe it or not, worldwide, 3 of 5 death are results from chronic inflammatory diseases like stroke, chronic respiratory diseases, heart disorders, cancer, obesity, and diabetes.

In the US, chronic inflammatory diseases affect more than 50 million Americans each year.

Sub-chronic diabetic treatment is a process associated with the treatment of diabetes that lasts only in a moderate or intermediate duration.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diabetes, researchers examined the ix derivatives (1-6) of moronic acid that were semi-synthesized and their in vitro protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B (PTP-1B) inhibition activity in diabetes.* In rat induced diabetes, derivatives 2 (IC50=10.8 ± 0.5 μM) and 6 (IC50=7.5 ± 0.1 μM) displayed the most potent inhibitory activity.

* The derivatives decreased plasma glucose levels during all the experiments in vitro and vivo.

* Most importantly, The #2 had polar and Van der Waals interactions in both sites with Val49, Gln262, Met258, Phe182, Ala217, Ile219, and Gly259 and # 6 showed polar interaction with Gln262 and Van der Waals with Val49, Ile219, Gly259, Arg254, Ala27, Phe52, Met258, the proteins associated with the onset of diabetes.
Based on the findings, researchers said, "derivatives 2 and 6 have the potential for the development of antidiabetic agents".

Taken altogether, moronic acid may be considered a remedy for the treatment of diabetes in a short duration, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Tocopherols Intake with Selenium May Increase the Risk of Prostate Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

Prostate warped around the around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder.

The prostate gland also makes and stores semen

Prostate enlargement is the condition that the prostate gland has grown bigger. The condition has been found in almost all aging males.

More precisely, by the age of 40, the levels of testosterone of men start to decrease resulting in the increase of the by-product prolactin of testosterone that stimulates the production of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase induce-the conversion of testosterone to dihydro-testosterones DHT triggering prostate enlargement and prostate cancer.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.

Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and prostate cancer may be detected during physical (rectum) exams.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the statistic, the 5-year survival rate for local and regional (stage 0 and 1) stages of prostate cancer is nearly 100%.

More than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older. Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belonging to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the effect of supplementation plasma α-tocopherol or γ-tocopherol in overall or high-grade prostate cancer.

The stratified case-cohort sample that included 1,746 incident prostate cancer cases diagnosed through June 2009 and a subcohort of 3,211 men derived from the SELECT trial of 35,533 men.

According to plasma were collected at entry from 2001 to 2004, and median follow-up was 5.5 years (range, 0-7.9 years),
* Men with higher α-tocopherol concentrations seemed to have risk similar to that of men with lower concentrations [overall HR for fifth (Q5) vs. first quintile (Q1), 1.21; 95 % confidence interval (CI), 0.88-1.66; P-trend = 0.24; in the trial placebo arm, Q5 HR, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.44-1.62; P-trend = 0.66].

In other words, plasma α-tocopherol does not influence the risk of prostate cancer.

* A strong positive plasma α-tocopherol association among men receiving the trial selenomethionine supplement [Q5 HR, 2.04; 95% CI, 1.29-3.22; P-trend = 0.005].

* A positive plasma α-tocopherol-prostate cancer association also seemed limited to high-grade disease (Gleason grade, 7-10; overall Q5 HR, 1.59; 95% CI, 1.13-2.24; P-trend = 0.001; among men receiving selenomethionine, Q5 HR, 2.12; 95% CI, 1.32-3.40; P-trend = 0.0002).

Where selenomethionine is an amino acid containing selenium

Based on the results, researchers said, "higher plasma α-tocopherol concentrations may interact with selenomethionine supplements to increase high-grade prostate cancer risk, suggesting a biologic interaction between α-tocopherol and selenium itself or selenomethionine".

Taken altogether, intake tocopherols together with selenomethionine may increase the risk of prostate cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Garbanzo Beans(chickpeas) In Prevention, Management and Treatment of Dyslipidemia, Researchers Find

Kyle J. Norton

Garbanzo beans, also known as chickpea, are edible legumes of the genus Cicer and the family Fabaceae, high in protein and minerals. It is one of the earliest cultivated vegetables, native to the Middle East.

With Nutrients of
1. Carbohydrates
2. Dietary fiber
3. Fat
4. Protein
5. Vitamin A
6. Thiamine (Vitamin B1)
7. Riboflavin (Vitamin B2)
8. Niacin (Vitamin B3)
9. Pantothenic acid (B5)
10. Vitamin B6
11. Folate (Vitamin B9)
12. Vitamin C
13. Vitamin E
14. Vitamin K
15. Iron
16. Magnesium
17. Phosphorus
18. Potassium
19. Zinc
20. Etc.

The effectiveness of chickpea in reduced symptoms and complications of patients with high blood cholesterol, probably due to the existence of a high amount of dietary fiber. According to the Huazhong Agricultural University, dietary fiber has the potential to be used as a functional ingredient to control cardiovascular diseases. due to the effectiveness of lipid-binding capacities of the three fibers and their effects on serum and hepatic lipid profiles.

In total, 157 patients study, dietary fiber intake may have a protective factor associated with CVD, by reducing the levels of pro-inflammatory factors, indoxyl sulfate, and serum cholesterol.

In the study of the dietary fiber in the prevention of obesity-related liver lipotoxicity, Dr. Han S and the research team in the joint study lead by the Soochow University wrote," Adequate intake of dietary fibers has proven metabolic and cardiovascular benefits,.... (and) exhibited lower weight gain, lipid profiles, and insulin resistance.

In an animal study, the change of diet such as a  high fiber diet may completely normalize neuropathy, promote weight loss, improved insulin sensitivity, and restored LDL cholesterol and oxLDL by 50% compared with levels in HFD control mice with metabolic syndrome (obesity, dyslipidemia, hypertension and impaired glucose tolerance (IGT)).

Taking all together, increased intake of dietary fiber every day such as chickpea may reduce the risk of dyslipidemia as well as high blood cholesterol-induced diseases.

Aloe Vera in Reducing the Symptoms and Treatment of Oral Submucous Fibrosis, Scientists Say

Kyle J. Norton

A study from a renowned institute suggested that injection of aloe vera may be reduced the risk and treatment of oral submucous fibrosis.

Oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF or OSF) is a chronic condition involving the oral cavity caused by an inflammatory reaction and progressive fibrosis of the submucosal tissues.

Aloe Vera is species of succulent plant in the genus Aloe, belonging to the Family Xanthorrhoeaceae, native to Sudan. It is very popular for commercial cultivation due to its health benefits, used in herbal medicine in treating many kinds of disease, including wound, burn healing, minor skin infections, sebaceous cysts, diabetes, and elevated cholesterol, etc.

According to the Sibar Institute of Dental Sciences, after 3 months of Aloe Vera treatment, patients with oral submucous fibrosis (OSMF or OSF) showed reduced levels of burning sensation and improved mouth opening.

In a total of 20 patients with oral submucous fibrosis, 10 in each group; group A subjects received 5 mg of aloe vera applied topically three times daily for 3 months and group B subjects received antioxidant capsules twice daily for 3 months study, group treated with aloe vera showed a statistically significant improvement of symptoms in comparison to control group.

Dr. Sudarshan R, the lead researcher in the study said, ". Aloe vera showed a statistically significant reduction in burning sensation (P = 0.008), improvement in mouth opening (P = 0.02), and cheek flexibility (P = 0.01) on comparing with the antioxidant group".

In support of the above differentiation, a double-blind, placebo-controlled, parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted on 60 subjects with OSMF by the Institute of Dental Sciences, Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, insisted that the group receiving aloe vera had a significant improvement in most symptoms of OSMF (P < .01) compared with the non-aloe vera group,

Other researchers suggested that the analgesic effects of aloe vera in reduced symptoms and treatment of oral submucous fibrosis should be accompanied by proper habit restriction together with physiotherapy exercises.

The study also emphasized the effectiveness of treatment in ameliorated symptoms, such as burning sensation, mouth opening, tongue protrusion, and cheek flexibility in comparison to other treatment groups.

Taking together, no doubt, aloe vera is effective in attenuated symptoms and treatment of patientss with oral submucous fibrosis, but intake of the large amount should only be prescribed by the herbalist.

Omega 3 Fatty Acids as Non-Immunosuppressive Phytochemical for the Treatment of Rheumatic Diseases (RA) and Neuropathic Pain Symptoms

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system is the set of cells comprised of the body's defense system against diseases.
Immunosuppressive agents are a class of drugs that suppress, or reduce, the strength of the body's immune system.

Non-immunosuppressive agents, including fish oils, anticoagulants, antihypertensive agents and tonsillectomy also substances used to modulatory immune function but have not been reviewed systematically.

Underactive immunity can be a primary immune deficiency or acquired immune deficiency. People with weakened immunity, regardless of the cause are at constant danger of infections from bacteria, viruses, and fungi.

The overactive immune system is a class of autoimmune diseases or chronic inflammatory diseases caused by the immune system attacking the body's tissue, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus,.... and multiple sclerosis.

The widespread chronic inflammatory diseases in modern society are a burden to humans because of life-long debilitating illness, increased mortality and high costs for therapy and care.

Depending on the substances that affect the immunomodulatory process, some may improve the immune function by modulating the genes involved immune responses and protect the immune system against toxins or immunotoxic effects such as abnormal allergic reactions, other such as heavy metals can induce opposite effects.

For example, curcumin (diferuloylmethane), found in the spice turmeric and processed anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and chemopreventive activities may improve the immune system in the inhibition of cancer cell proliferation and overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines by target the genes associated with programming cell death and anti-inflammatory action and involved in the induction of these immune parameters.

On the other hand, toxic chemicals such as cadmium and lead accumulated in the body can have a negative impact on the immune defense by reducing the viability of both lymphocytes and macrophages was affected by heavy metals in a dose- and time-dependent manner.

Additionally, in vitro model, overexpression of lead and cadmium can results in dysregulation of lymphocytes and macrophages in stimulating the production of proinflammatory cytokines.

Rheumatism is autoimmune and inflammatory diseases marked by inflammation and pain in the joints, muscles, or fibrous tissue, especially rheumatoid arthritis.

In other words, rheumatic diseases are a medical and chronic condition characterized inflammation that affects your joints tendons, ligaments, bones, and muscles, including a group of diseases associated with arthritis.

Neuropathic pain is pain caused by damage or disease that affects the somatosensory nervous system.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of rheumatic diseases (RA) and neuropathic pain (NP), associated with side effects of biological agents, opioids, corticoids, and gabapentinoids induced immunosuppression, researchers examined anti-RA and NP specialized pro-resolving lipid mediators (SPMs) activity.

SPMs are biosynthesized from the omega-3 fatty acids arachidonic acid (AA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), docosapentaenoic acid (DPA), or docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

According to the tested analysis,
* The application of SPMs in vivo, showed efficacy at very low doses, as a therapeutic drug to treat pain and infection, without inducing side effects.

* SPMs were found to exerted immune-resolvents activity as a long-lasting analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects.

In other words, SPMs blocked the initiation of pain without causing immunosuppressive effects.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "SPMs block pain, infection and neuro-immune interactions and, therefore, emerge as a new class of non-immunosuppressive and non-opioid analgesic drugs".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the treatment of s Non-Immunosuppressive Phytochemical for the Treatment of Rheumatic Diseases (RA) and Rheumatic Diseases and Neuropathic Pain Symptoms, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Essential Oil Anise Processes Anti Antiviral Activities Against the Onset of Infectious Diseases

Kyle J. Norton

Essential oil Anise may have a potential and substantial effect in reduced risk and progression and treatment of viral infectious diseases, some scientists suggested.

Anise is a flowering plant of the species of Pimpinella anisum, genus Pimpinella, belongings to the family Apiaceae native to Egypt and the Mediterranean region, used in traditional herbal medicine as a fragrance in soaps, oils, and mouth fresheners and stomachic, anti-septic, anti-spasmodic,...

Chemical constituents
Anethole, D-pinene, I-phellandrene, Alpha-terpineol, Safrol, Methyl chavicol, Resin, Shikimic acid, etc.

In the investigation of the effects of several essential oils, including Anise in against expression of herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) in vitro on RC-37 cells, using a plaque reduction assay, researchers found that application of essential oil of concentrations (IC50) at doses of 0.016%, 0.0075%, 0.007%, 0.004%, 0.003%, and 0.0015% demonstrated significant effects linearly in ameliorate the persistent infection spreading of sexually transmitted disease of the virus.

A maximum dose, essential oil of Ansie without inducing cytotoxicity to healthy cells, exerted an inhibitory effect against different stages during the viral infectious cycle and plaque formation by more than 90%.

Interestingly, all essential oils displayed no inhibitory effect cells prior to infection with HSV-2 or after the adsorption period.

These results suggested that injection of Ansis essential oil can only affect HSV-2 after penetrating into the viral envelope.

In comparison to the inhibitory effects of all essential oil, Anise exhibited a less selectivity activity compare to essential oil isolated from chamomile.
Further demonstration of Anise antiviral activity, using 3 antiviral and immunostimulating substances (LC1, LC2, and LC3) isolated from a hot water extract of seeds of Pimpinella anisum by a combination of anion-exchange, gel filtration, and hydrophobic interaction column chromatographies researchers at the University of Toyama suggested that the lignin and carbohydrate molecules(CLs) bonded physically or chemically with each other of LC1, LC2 and LC3 exerted significantly antiviral activities in reduced expression of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) and measles virus.

Moreover, application of all LCs substances inhibited the virus-induced-adsorption to the host cell surface by direct inactivating the virus's penetration through enhanced nitric oxide (NO) production by inducing iNOS mRNA and protein expression in RAW 264.7 murine macrophage cells in response to viral attacks.

These result of the rival inhibitory effect of Anise LCs substances not only prevented virus in alternated the healthy cells DNA is initiated infectious cell proliferation but also inhibited the production of interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β) and interleukin 10 caused by an overreaction of immune response in elevated expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines in induction of healthy cell damage and cell apoptosis.

The above differentiation was supported by the study in the evaluated the effect of limonene, the major bioactive compound found in Fennel and Ansie in inhibited risk and progression and treatment of dengue, a potentially fatal mosquito-borne infection of 50 million cases per year with 2.5 billion people who are vulnerable to the disease.

According to the results, the application of essential oil using WHO procedures displayed a substantial effect against third instar larvae of Ae. aegypti for 24 h.

More specifically, the result of inhibition of over 99% of the tested virus was attributed to major constituent (-)-limonene at lethal concentrations LC50, C90, and LC99.

Taken together, Anise and its major bioactive monoterpenes may be considered as a possessed potency as functional food ingredients against infectious diseases caused by the viral invasion.

Ursolic Acid Exerts Anti-Colon Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

The colon formed part of the digestive tract including the large intestine with a function to reabsorb fluids and process and secret waste products from the body.

Colon cancer is a chronic condition caused by cell growth irregularly and disorderly in the colon due to the alternation of DNA.

Colon cancer is relatively very common and slowly growing and progressing in a predictable way and the third most commonly diagnosed cancer in developed countries, including the US and Canada.

Most cases of colon cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the colon. At this stage, patients may not experience any symptoms.

After penetrating deeper into the colon layer, the cancer cells may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the fluids and blood circulation.

At this stage, the increased size of the tumor may suppress the nearby tissue, organs or nerve cells causing localized symptoms and severe pain.

The most common colon cancer metastasis are the lungs, liver.
According to the epidemiological studies, the most common risk factors of colon cancer are
age, ethnicity, personal and family history of colorectal cancer or polyps, inflammatory intestinal conditions.

Ursolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belongings to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in apples, basil, bilberries, cranberries, peppermint, lavender, oregano, hawthorn, prunes., etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers examined the cytotoxic and radiosensitizing effects of Ursolic Acid (UA) and Kamolonol Acetate (KA) on HCT116 cell line.

According to the analysis,
* UA and KA have cytotoxic effects on HCT116 cell line.

* UA and KA decreased the survival fraction of treated cells, compared to the survival fraction of untreated cells.

* UA and KA lead to a decrease in the expression level of NF-κB associated with the cancer cell antiapoptosis.

* More importantly, the Synergistic effect of radiosensitizing agents with radiation was only approved for UA and 2 Gy of radiation.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "UA and KA have cytotoxic effects on HCT116 cell line. Furthermore, UA may lead to radiosensitization of human colorectal tumor cells by NF-κB1 and CCND1signaling pathways".

Taken altogether, ursolic acid may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of colonic cancer, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of ursolic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
