Ashwagandha, the Promising Nootropic, Scientists Find

By Kyle J. Norton

Nootropics are medications that process cognitive-enhancing property.
In other words, Nootropics, including supplements, herbal remedies, and others improve cognitive function, such as executive functions, memory, creativity, or motivation.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

Neuron dysfunction has been found to induce neurodegenerative diseases.

A neuroprotective effect is an event that protects the central nervous system (CNS) by relatively preserving the neuronal structure and/or function.

Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorder. Anything that involves the structural, biochemical or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord or other nerves, including brain damage are considered neuro diseases.

The most common neurodegenerative diseases in the elderly are dementia. Depending on the brain regions that are damaged or dysfunction, dementia can be Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, and Huntington's disease.

Genetic mutation inherited from parents such as the NOTCH3 gene is the most common autosomal dominant inherited cause of stroke and vascular dementia.

On finding a potent compound that processes the neuroprotective effect, researchers examined the effects of withanamides in W.somnifera Nootropics for enhancing and maintaining brain health and function.

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

According to differentiation, Ashwagandha extracts and active principles not only processed the anticancer, anti-stress and remedial potential for aging but also protected the brain neurons against neurodegenerative pathologies.

Additionally, Ashwagandha leaf extracts showed a multidimensional ranking potential from the differentiation of neuroblastoma and glioma cells.
Moreover, the leaf extracts also reversed the Alzheimer's and Parkinson's pathologies and protected the brain cells' integrity against environmental neurotoxins and enhancement of memory.

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered a functional herb as nootropics including Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's disease, pending to the result of larger sample size and multicenter study

Herbal Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara), the Potential Anti Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissue of organs.

The lung is a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissues. The most common form of primary lung cancers is derived from epithelial cells.

Most cases of lung cancer caused by the alternation of calls DNA begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of the lung.

At the advanced stage, the cancer cell from the lung can travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissue and organs through the circulation of fluid and blood, leading to the secondary metastasis.

According to statistics, in 2017, 28,600 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer, representing 14% of all new cancer cases. Also in 2017, lung cancer caused the death of 21,100 Canadians.

Although smoking is a major cause of lung cancer, however, not all lung cancer patients with lung cancer are smokers. Nonsmokers' lung cancer may be caused by exposure to radon, secondhand smoke, air pollution, or other factors.

Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,
* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube
* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Non-small cell lung cancer is the most common type of lung cancer. It usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of malignant tumors, scientists examined the anti-non-small cell lung cancer effect of polysaccharide, TFPB1, isolated from the flower buds of Tussilago farfara.

Where TFPB1 is a homogeneous polysaccharide with a molecular weight of 37.8kDa and composed of antioxidants, rhamnose, galacturonic acid, glucose, galactose, and arabinose, in a ratio of 13:13:1:7:12.

Coltsfoot(Tussilago farfara) is a perennial herbaceous plant, genus Tussilago, belonging to the family Asteraceae, native to Europe and Asia. The herb has been used over thousands of years to treat asthma, various coughs, bronchial congestion, respiratory disorders, headaches and obstruction in the nasal passage, etc.

According to the differentiation, TFPB1 showed to inhibit cell proliferation of A549 cells and induce cell apoptosis in vitro.

Furthermore, TFPB1 downregulated the protein expression associated with cellular proliferation and cell migration.

Additionally, the administration of TFPB1also enhanced the functions of caspase protein and Fas, FasL, and Bax expression involved in cellular apoptosis by inhibiting the expression of the proapoptotic protein.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote in the final report, " TFPB1 exhibited anti-proliferative and anti-apoptotic effect partly depending on the suppression of the Akt signaling pathway. These findings provided us a potential chemotherapeutic strategy for the treatment of human non-small cell lung cancer".

Taken altogether, coltsfoot may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of Non-small lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Processes Anti-Inflammatory Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a process of the immune system that responds to harmful pathogens.

Inflammation can be acute or chronic. In the acute phase of infection, the immune system after receiving information from the neurons, macrophages, the largest white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulate the production of blood palette to cover the wound and the production of inflammatory cytokines to kill off micro-organisms, leading to symptoms of fever, redness, and swelling.

However, in some cases, the overproduction of proinflammatory cytokines may damage nearby healthy cells and tissues, causing the formation of scars.

In severe cases, a protein with duo functions in the production of pro and anti-inflammatory cytokines which produce anti-inflammatory cytokines under normal condition also switch to produce pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Most cases of acute inflammatory are resolved within a few days without causing damage to the wound tissues.

Chronic inflammatory diseases are the class of conditions involved in low-grade inflammation to the affect tissue or organ.

Some researchers suggested that the immune system has evolved over thousands of years to kill off the foreign invasive pathogens within a period of time, normally between 3 to 8 weeks. If the immune fails to do so, it will adapt to the new change, leading to chronic inflammation.

There are several factors that cause the onset of the conditions. Some scientists indicated untreated acute inflammation, such as an infection or injury and an autoimmune disorder involved immune system mistakenly attacking healthy tissue are the most causes of chronic inflammatory diseases.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases, researchers examined the effect of Omega 3 fatty acids on the development of atherosclerosis and increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs).

According to the results of studies, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) and its eicosapentaenoic acid and docosahexaenoic acid (omega 3), and arachidonic acid (omega 6) exerted strong anti-inflammatory properties.

Omega-3 fatty acids supplementation showed an inverse association with the risk, inflammation, obesity, and CVDs.

Furthermore, Omega-3 PUFAs also decreased the production of inflammatory mediators and had a positive effect on obesity and diabetes mellitus type-2.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered an anti-inflammatory remedy, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Green Bean Protects the Liver Against Hepato-Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

The liver is the largest internal organ located in the upper right portion of the abdomen, beneath your diaphragm and above your stomach.

The liver not only plays a critical role to filter the blood coming from the intestine before passing them to other parts of the body but also protects our body against toxin by detoxifying chemicals and metabolizes drugs.

Additionally, the liver also inhibits oxidative stress by producing the antioxidant enzyme that counters the expression of free radicals in the body.

The hepatoprotective effect is the action of the prevention of the liver against liver damage or toxicity.

There is no single cause of liver diseases. Researchers suggested that virus such as hepatitis A, B, C, long-term excessive alcohol drinking and genetic mutation inherited from the parents is the major risk factors associated with the early onset of the diseases.

Some researchers suggested overweight and obesity and congenital diseases such as Hemochromatosis and Wilson’s disease also are the prevalent risk factors of liver damage and diseases.

Liver damage and disease can also be caused by long-term intake of certain medications, such as paracetamol and Illegal drugs such as cocaine.

Hepatotoxicity is a condition caused by the accumulation of toxin in the liver, leading to liver dysfunction or reduced liver function.

Acute liver toxicity is caused by short-term exposure to toxic chemicals such as an overdose of medication.

Chronic liver toxicity is due to long-term exposure to toxic substances including excessive alcohol drinking and long term use of certain medicines.

Green bean is a genus of Phaseolus Sensu Stricto, containing 55 difference species, belongings to the family Fabaceae and native to the New World tropics and grown in Europe for its attractive flowers and fleshy immature pods.

The veggie can be classified into two major groups, bush beans, and pole beans.

On finding potential mixture with liver protective activity, researchers compared the herbal extract mixture and yogurt added to the herbal extract mixture including alder tree, labiate herb, milk thistle green bean-rice bran fermentation, and turnip were tested for their protective and therapeutic effects on ethanol-induced liver injury.

Based on the results of the experiment, the herbal extract mixture, yogurt, and commercial drugs for two weeks treatment prior to administering a single oral dose of ethanol (3 g/kg body weight), the herbal extract mixture plus yogurt added, exerted significant protection against ethanol-induced toxicity comparable to the commercial drug.

More importantly, herbal extract mixture co-treatment with yogurt showed a strong activity to protects the liver against a triple oral dose of ethanol (2 g/kg body weight, over one week) ethanol toxicity.

Based on results the long term treatment, scientists said, "When compared to the positive control, further treatment with both the herbal extract and yogurt significantly reduced liver injury and resulted in a lower grade of lipid deposition".

Taken altogether, green bean in the combination of with other herbal medicine may be considered functional food for the prevention and treatment of liver diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale), the Anti High Blood Cholesterol Herbal Medicine

By Kyle J. Norton

Hyperlipidemia is abnormally high levels of cholesterol in the bloodstream. The syndrome is a member of the cluster conditions of metabolic syndrome, a leading cause of cardiovascular disease.

The condition is normally known as high blood cholesterol in the general population.

People with hyperlipidemia are asymptomatic. Over time, the fat collection in the arteries accompanied by calcium or other substances form plague, leading to narrowing arteries and reduced function of the arteries to transport oxygen-rich blood to the parts of the body.

According to the statistics provided by the CDC, in 2015–2016, more than 12% of adults age 20 and older had total cholesterol higher than 240 mg/dL, and more than 18% had high-density lipoprotein (HDL, or “good”) cholesterol levels less than 40 mg/dL.

Believe it or not, about half of the U.S. adults (55%, or 43 million) are currently taking medicine associated with lower blood cholesterol.

Hypolipidemic activity is the process that lowers the levels of blood cholesterol used for the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Cholesterol, a waxy substance produced either by the liver or food intake plays a critical role in the production of vitamin D, steroid hormones and the building of the cell walls.

Overexpression cholesterol is a medical condition that causes plaque accumulated on the arterial wall, leading to narrowing the arteries in transport the oxygenated blood to the parts of the body.

In severe cases, it can cause blood flow blockage, leading to chronic ailments depending on the location of the blood clot.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, scientists examined the hypolipidemic effects of dandelion root and leaf in rabbits fed with a high-cholesterol diet.

28 male rabbits selected to the study were divided into four subgroups; a normal diet group, a high-cholesterol diet group, a high-cholesterol diet with a 1% (w/w) dandelion leaf group, and a high-cholesterol diet with 1% (w/w) dandelion root group.

Based on the results of the experiment, dandelion root and leaf groups showed a positively changed plasma antioxidant enzyme activity against lipid peroxidation and lipid profiles in cholesterol-fed rabbits.

Moreover, both dandelion root and leaf treatment groups demonstrated potentially hypolipidemic and antioxidant effects against lipid oxidation.

More importantly, dandelion root and leaf protected against oxidative stress-induced plagues formation that linked atherosclerosis and decreased the atherogenic index.

Taken altogether, dandelion may be considered a remedy for the treatment of high blood cholesterol, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Oleanolic acid, the Promising Anti Pro-Inflammatory Cytokine Release and Antioxidant Defense Phytochemical

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammation is a natural immune response involving the stimulated production of pro-inflammatory activity with a target to protect our body against foreign invasions such as virus and bacteria after injury and damage.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune white blood cells in the first line of defense stimulating the blood vessel constriction and palette accumulated to the injury area to cover the wound and the proteins associated with the production of the pro-inflammatory cytokines to kill off the invasive microorganisms.

In other words, pro-inflammatory cytokines are activated through systematic immune response to the damage cells which release chemicals including histamine, bradykinin, and prostaglandins to protect the injure area or location against infection, leading to blood vessels to leak fluid into the tissues, causing swelling and other symptoms such as pain, swelling, and redness.

However, in most cases, over-response of the immune system can lead to over expressions of certain pro-inflammatory cytokines, depending on the injured location such as Interleukin (IL)-1 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) which can lead shock and death of healthy cells in the infectious location.

In most cases, long-term overexpression of pro-inflammatory cytokines can lead to chronic inflammatory disease as the immune system no longer can kill the invasive agents and heal the damage caused by acute infection.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

There are 3 main types of antioxidants found in nature, including
* Antioxidant enzymes produced by the host, including superoxide dismutase (SOD), glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, and catalases.

* Antioxidants vitamins, that may be injected from the dietary sources such as fruits and vegetables, including vitamins A, C, D, and E. Most antioxidant vitamins are considered free radical scavengers that gobble up free radicals before they can induce a cascade of damage.

* Antioxidant Phytochemicals found in the plant including second metabolites.

Oleanolic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found abundantly in honey mesquite, garlic, java apple, clove, etc.

On finding a potential plant that processes neuroprotective activity researchers examined the effect of oleanolic acid, a natural triterpene present in food and medicinal plants on chronic microglial overactivation related neuroinflammation in Alzheimer's disease.

According to the results of the analysis,
* Oleanolic acid (OA), attenuated the activation of BV2 microglial cells involved in neurodegeneration, toxicology, and immune inflammation induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS).

* OA exerted a strong antioxidant defense in the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines by blocking the release of IL-1β, IL-6, TNF-α, and NO and the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS).

More precisely, OA inhibited the onset of oxidative stress and inflammatory response in activated microglia associated with Alzheimer's disease.

Taken altogether, Oleanolic acid may be considered a remedy for inhibiting cytokine release and upregulated the antioxidant defense systems in AD,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Collard Greens' Sulforaphane (SFN), Protects the Neuron Against Neurodegenerative Diseases

By Kyle J. Norton

Dementia is the loss of mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with people's every life and Alzheimer's disease is the most common type of dementia in aging people.

American typical diet contains a high amount of saturated and trans fat, artificial ingredients with fewer fruits and vegetable which can lead to dementia and other kinds of diseases.

About 5-8% of all people over the age of 65 have some form of dementia, and this number doubles every five years above that age.

Neuroprotection an action involved the use of a natural substance to protect the integrity of neurons against damage or death.

In other words, neuroprotection is the process to protect brain functioning.

Neurodegenerative diseases are a class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons in the brain caused by several mechanisms, including toxicity and oxygen deficiency.

Most common disease associated with neurodegenerative diseases is dementia, a cluster of conditions included Parkinson’s, Alzheimer’s, and Huntington’s disease, leading to a negative influence the body's functioning, including balance, movement, talking, breathing, and heart function.

There is no single cause of the progressive death of brain neurons. Epidemiologically, genetic preposition, medical condition, such as alcoholism, brain cancer or a stroke in the brain are some of the most common prevalent factors found in patients with neurological diseases

A prolonged period of toxins, toxic chemicals accumulated that affects the brain function also have a strong impact to induce the onset of the disease.

Symptoms of neurotoxicity are totally depending on the degree of toxicity. Some symptoms may take some time to develop. However, in most cases, symptoms may appear immediately after exposure.

Depending on the area and location of neuron damage, weakness or numbness, loss of memory, vision, headache change of cognitive and behavioral and sexual dysfunction are the most common symptoms found in people with neurotoxicity.

According to the WHO, neurological disorders, ranging from epilepsy to Alzheimer's disease, from stroke to headache, affect up to one billion people worldwide.

Sulforaphane (SFN), a phytochemical found abundantly in the species of Brassica Oleracea, belongings to the family Brassicaceae with unknown origin.

On finding a potential plant for the prevention of dementia, researchers examined the neuroprotective effects of isothiocyanate sulforaphane (SFN), and erucin (ERN) isolated from collard greens.

According to the tested analysis, in the comparison of the neuroprotective effects of SFN and ERN in SH-SY5Y cells.at the same dose level (5 μM) with oxidative stress induced by 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA), the pretreatment of the SH-SY5Y cells with SFN showed a significant increase of the levels of active nuclear Nrf2 protein associated with the expression of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

Furthermore, pretreatment of SFN not only improved the levels of total GSH (antioxidants) but also protected the neuron against apoptosis elicited by 6-OHDA compared to ERN.

Interestingly, the simultaneous treatment of SH-SY5Y cells with either SFN or ERN and 6-OHDA showed similarly neuroprotective effects as those of pretreatment of SFN.

Similar results were also found in the mouse model.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "The metabolic oxidation of ERN to SFN could account for their similar neuroprotective effects in vivo, raising the possibility of using vegetables containing a precursor of ERN for systemic antioxidant benefits in a similar manner to SFN".

Taken altogether, phytochemical SFN phytochemicals may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of neurodegenerative diseases, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
