Moronic acid, A Potential Anti- Epstein-Barr Virus Infectious Remedy

By Kyle J. Norton

Infection is an inflammatory condition caused by a microbial invasion on body tissues.

Most cases of bacterial infection are treated with antibiotics. However, bacteria are very adaptable, overuse of antibiotics has been found to make them resistant to antibiotics.

The most common symptoms of bacterial infection include redness and heat, swelling, fever, pain at the site of infection.

Infectious diseases are a medical condition caused by pathogenic microorganisms, including bacteria, viruses, parasites or fungi.

Most cases of infectious diseases are contagious by spreading directly or indirectly, from one person to another.

In other words, if you kiss, or are coughed or sneezed on by an infectious person, you are at risk of developing the same infectious disease.

According to the statistic provided by the World Health Organization, 3 infectious diseases were ranked in the top ten causes of death worldwide in 2016.

More precisely, lower respiratory infections, diarrheal diseases, and tuberculosis induced 3.0 million, 1.4 million, and 1.3 million deaths, respectively.

A viral infection is a disease caused by the successful entering and multiplying of a virus in the body.

In the acute phase of viral infection, depending on the types of viruses, the viruses after entering the body start to attack the specific host cells. The cold and flu virus will attack the cells in the respiratory system and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), which causes AIDS, will attack the white blood cells of the immune system,

The viral infection o\has been known to carry over some different stage, after successfully attaching to the host cell, the virus to release its mRNA into the host cell, leading to the recruit of the host cell's enzymes to accelerate the viral multiplying, then breaking free from the host cell to start the cycle all over again.

Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) a member of the herpes virus family is one of the most common human viruses that infects at least 95% of the population. Most persons are infected during infancy and early childhood.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of infectious diseases, researchers examined the moronic acid, found in galls of Rhus Chinensis and Brazilian propolis, at 10microM in the inhibition of Epstein-Barr virus (EBV).

According to the results of the experiment,
* Moronic acids inhibit the capacity of Rta to activate a promoter that contains a Rta-response element associated with the immediate-early stage of the lytic cycle on the transcription of viral lytic genes without influencing the transactivation function of Zta, a promotor of Epstein-Barr virus denes.

In other words, moronic acid treatment is attributable to the inhibition of the expression of Zta, EA-D and many EBV lytic genes that are depending on Rta

* Furthermore, the treatment of P3HR1 cells with moronic acid substantially reduces the numbers of EBV particles produced by the cells after lytic induction.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "This study suggests that moronic acid is a new structural lead for anti-EBV drug development".

Taken altogether, moronic acid, may be a promising phytochemical for the treatment of Epstein-Barr virus infection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
