Whole Food Honey, A Natural Treatment of Chronic Foot Ulcers with No Side Effects

By Kyle J. Norton

A chronic leg ulcer is a medical condition caused by the defect in the skin below the level of the knee that does not heal and lasts more than six weeks.

Most common causes of chronic foot ulcer are venous disease induced the onset of edema and the eventual breakdown of tissues due to lack of oxygen and nutrients.caused by the accumulation of the plaque on the arterial walls and neuropathy that affects the autonomic, sensory and motor components of the nervous system.

However, in patients with diabetes, chronic foot ulcers are one of the most significant and devastating complications and a leading risk of amputation.

Besides medical condition indicated above, cigarette smoking has been found to increase the risk of chronic foot ulcers.

Dr. Jodi C. McDaniel, the lead scientists in the differentiation of smoking risk in patients with chronic wound said, "Evidence-based guidelines for treating venous leg ulcers, diabetic foot ulcers, and pressure ulcers, the 3 main categories of chronic wounds, focus primarily on biologic therapies".

And "However, there are also evidence-based guidelines for treating behavioral risks to poor healing, such as smoking, which should be incorporated into treatment plans when appropriate".

The findings strongly suggested, if you are cigarette smokers, your risk of a chronic foot ulcer increases substantially.

Honey, the rich golden liquid is the miraculous product made by bees using nectar from flowers.

The liquid is considered one of the healthy food for replacing the use of white sugar and artificial sweetener by many people.

With an aim to find a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of chronic foot ulcers in diabetics, researchers launched an exhaustive literature search in PUBMED, COCHRANE, GOOGLE using keywords 'topical honey', 'diabetic foot ulcer', 'chronic wounds'.

5 clinical trials and about 10 observational studies in various parts of the world satisfied the standard criteria and guideline were included in the review.

According to the 3 selected clinical trials, the honey dressing was better than conventional dressing, all the clinical trials proved the safety of honey for the treatment of diabetic foot ulcer.

Furthermore, in order to know more information about honey in the treatment of chronic leg ulcer, researchers investigated the healing of chronic venous leg ulcers (CVLU) using medical grade honey comparable to that of standard wound therapy.

According to 299 papers were identified, five represented the best evidence available to answer the clinical question.

According to 2 selected trials, one showed better outcomes for CVLU healing with the use of honey over standard wound therapy and the other showed equivalent outcomes but more adverse effects.

Another study suggested that a third randomized controlled trial showed a non-signific ant reduction in bacterial colonization of CVLU with honey compared to standard therapy.

Taken altogether, honey may be considered a functional remedy for the treatment of chronic foot ulcers in diabetics, pending to the confirmation of large sample size and multicenter human study.
