#Cruciferousvegetables Inhibits Genetic Pathways and #Mechanisms Associated with the Risk #NeurodegenerativeDiseases, Researchers Say

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the reduction in the rate of neuronal loss over time inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.
Neurological diseases are the medical conditions of brain disorders. Anything that involves structural, biochemical, or electrical abnormalities in the brain, spinal cord, or other nerves, including brain damage is considered neuron disease.

Neurodegenerative disease is the class of conditions associated with the progressive loss of neurons that occurs mostly in older adults, including dementia. The most common dementia in the US is Alzheimer`s disease (AD).

Alzheimer's disease is an irreversible, progressive brain disorder caused by the slow loss of neuron in the brain that affects the memory and thinking skills and, eventually, the ability to carry out the simplest tasks as the disease progress into the advanced stage.

According to the statistics, dementia affects over 47.5 million people worldwide, approximately 58 percent are living in low and middle-income countries.

Believe it or not, 5.8 million Americans of all ages are living with Alzheimer's dementia in 2019, and two-thirds of people with Alzheimer's disease are women.

Conventionally, as of today, there is no cure for dementia. Treatment of dementia is focusing improving dementia symptoms and slowing down the progression of the disease.


Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings of the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, and species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climates for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

In finding a potential compound for the treatment of neurological diseases, researchers examined cruciferous vegetable neuroprotective activity.

According to the dietary information,
* SFN, a potent bioactive compound found in the veggies upregulated the nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) antioxidant response element (ARE) genetic pathway by increasing the antioxidant enzymes produced by the host.

* SFN was found to protect the nervous system from many diseases and toxins in a few small human trials.

* Furthermore, according to the preclinical data, SFN protects the nervous system through multiple mechanisms and reduces the risk of many diseases and the burden of symptoms in existing conditions.

In other words, SFN processed protective effects in a multitude of neurological diseases and toxin exposures.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "SFN is a promising neuroprotective phytochemical which needs further human trials to evaluate its efficacy in preventing and decreasing the burden of many neurological diseases".

Taken altogether, cruciferous vegetables may be considered neuroprotective functional foods, pending the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
