Phytochemical Omega -3 Fatty Acids Process Anti-Hyperglycemic Activity, According to Studies

By Kyle J. Norton

Diabetes is a chronic condition caused by insufficient insulin entering the bloodstream to regulate the glucose.

In other words, diabetes occurs when cells in the pancreas dying off or receptor sites clogged up by fat and cholesterol. In some cases, diabetes is also caused by allergic reactions of cells in the immune system.

Hyperglycemia, a medical condition of abnormally high blood glucose, is a major concern, in people with both type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

Although hyperglycemia is a hallmark in patients with diabetes, the condition can also occur to people without diabetes due to a certain medical condition such as pneumonia in the elderly.

Most cases of hyperglycemia occurred in patients who do not manage diabetes properly.

Untreated hyperglycemia has been found to induce ketoacidosis characterized by the symptoms shortness of breath, breath that smells fruity and gastrointestinal discomforts such as nausea, vomiting, and dry mouth.

Ketoacidosis is a life-threatening condition caused by your body's inability to make enough insulin.

The most common causes of hyperglycemia are associated with an uncontrolled diet, improper use of insulin and skip diabetic medication.

The most common symptoms of hyperglycemia are increased thirst frequent urination, fatigue (weak, and unintended weight loss. In severe cases, some patients may also experience symptoms of headaches, trouble concentrating and blurred vision.

Most cases of hyperglycemia can be controlled by the following diabetes guidance.

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diabetic complications, researchers examined a combination of plant sterols (PS) and omega-3 fatty acids synergistic effect on impaired glucose regulation (IGR).

A total of 200 participants were randomized to receive PS and omega-3 fatty acids (n = 50), PS alone (n = 50), omega-3 fatty acids alone (n = 50), or placebo soybean powder plus placebo capsules (n = 50) for 12 weeks.

According to the results of the experiment,
* Compared to the placebo group, the group receiving the combined intervention exhibited significantly decreased TG, HDL-C, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), Insulin Resistance (HOMA-IR)) and glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c).

* Omega-3 fatty acids alone were associated with significant reductions in waistline, TG, FBG, HOMA-IR, and Hs-CRP.

* The combined ap[plication also exerted no significant changes in body weight, BMI, blood pressure, FINS, body fat percentage, visceral fat rating, TC, LDL-C or IL-6.

Based on the findings, researchers said, " this study has demonstrated for the first time that PS, omega-3 fatty acids or the combination thereof significantly improved inflammation, insulin resistance, as well as glucose and lipid metabolism in IGR individuals".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids together with plant sterols (PS)  may be considered a supplement for the treatment of hyperglycemia-induced by IGR,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
