Food Therapy: Dried Pea, An Antioxidant Functional Food

Dried peas may be considered a functional food in enhanced antioxidant activities, some renowned institute studies suggested.

Dried pea is a small but nutritionally mighty member of the legume family, genus Pisum belongings to the family Fabaceae with healthy source of proteins, fibers, vitamins and minerals.

1. Pea protein hydrolysate, after a 12 h pre-treatment, inhibited NO production by activated macrophages up to 20%.
2. The tested chemical compound also demonstrated a strong inhibition of secretion of pro-inflammatory cytokines, TNF-α- and IL-6, up to 35 and 80%, respectively.
3. Oral administration of PPH in mice enhanced the white blood cell activity in stimulated the gut mucosa immune response.

The findings information showed that the powerful antioxidants properties of pea protein hydrolysate, exerts a significant effect in reduced the expression of pro inflammatory cytokins in regulated immune response.

Dr. Ndiaye F, after taking into account of other con founders said, "Enzymatic protein degradation confers anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating potentials to pea proteins, and the resulted peptides could be used as an alternative therapy for the prevention of inflammatory-related diseases".
