#Herbal #Catnip in the Inhibition of the Risk and Progression of #LungCancer, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Catnip may have a potential and substantial effect in reducing the risk and treatment of lung cancer, some scientists suggested.

Catnip is also known as catswort, or catmint, a plant of Nepeta, belonging to the family of Lamiaceae, native to Europe and Asia, used in herbal medicine as an insect repellant and to treat digestive disorders, children's restlessness and nervousness, fevers, colds, and flu, skin irritations stimulate sweating, promote menstruation, etc...

Ingredients
Terpenoid nepetalactone, α-Pinene, β-Pinene, Cyclohexen-1-yl-methyl ketone, Triplal, Thymol, Nepetalactone, Nepetalactone, etc...

Lung cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the lung. At the later stage, the cancerous cell may invade other healthy tissues and organs a distance away from the original site.

According to statistics, In 2015, approximately 26,600 Canadians will be diagnosed with lung cancer and 20,900 will die of it.

According to the investigation of the anti-cancer effect of extracts isolated from catnip containing sub-fractions (ND-1-ND-15) of ND using human lung cancer cells (A-549) experiment, the selected sub-fractions of the chloroform extract demonstrated significant activity in reduced the cell viability of A-549 cells, through alternated the cancer cell structures and arrangement in a concentration-dependent manner.

In a classification of the effect of each individual subfraction, researchers found that the ND-10 fraction induces the greatest cytotoxicity in the lowest dose compared to other fractions with ND-1 does not cause any cytotoxicity even at higher concentrations.

In comparison to other cancer cell lines, human lung cancer cells (A-549) were found to be more sensitive to the application of the extracts.

Further differentiation of the Nepeta cataria L. anti-cancer treatment effect was recorded in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia of version 2015 and belongs to one of the Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). Microfluidic chip technology, researchers at the joint study led by the Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine conducted a study based on total flavonoid extracted from Nepeta cataria L. (TFS) on the risk of human lung cancer cell line A549 using the microfluidic device and Flow Cytometry assays, suggested that the bioactive chemicals exert a significant activity in inhibited cancer cell proliferation and tumor progression and invasion through mRNA expression of MicroRNA-126 (miR-126) which plays an important role involved in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in inhibition of human cancer progression, regulating apoptosis of cancer cells.

Additionally, the anti-lung cancer expression was attributed to ameliorating the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), a potent angiogenic factor with the function to trigger the development of new blood vessels to supply nutrients and oxygen to ignite cancer cell proliferation and inhibited the expression of the PI3K signaling pathway which is correlated to the cancer aggression and invasive malignancy.

Researchers also indicated that according to the Flow Cytometry assay, the phytochemicals also exhibit the expression of PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog deleted on chromosome 10) PTEN gene in initiated tumor suppressible activity through expression PI3K-AKT pathway in induced cell cycle arrest or apoptosis in human cancer cells

Dr. Jiaxin Fan, the lead author, after taking into account other confounders said, " Taking all these results into consideration we can draw a conclusion that TFS may be used as a novel therapeutic agent for NSCLC in the near future".

The information findings postulated that herbal catnip with abundant bioactive compounds may be considered a functional food in reduced risk and treatment of human lung cancer, depending on further differentiation.
