#Betanin Protects the Digestive Tract DNA Against Damages that Cause Inflammatory Bowel Disease, Researchers Say

By Kyle J. Norton

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is a class of chronic conditions associated with the inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract, including
* Ulcerative colitis is a chronic inflammation and ulcers found in the innermost lining of the colon and rectum.

* Crohn's disease. is a type of IBD that causes inflammation of the lining of the digestive tract, other than the colon and rectum.

The most common symptoms of IBD are severe diarrhea, abdominal pain, fatigue, and weight loss. Long-term persistent symptoms such as weight loss may be life-threatening.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms, please make sure to check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The causes of IBD are unknown. However, some researchers suggested that the promotion of a high-fat diet over the past few decades that cause the alternation of the ratio of gut microbiota may be the major culprit in facilitating the onset of IBD.

The research of Case Western Reserve University, wrote, "A high-fat diet may lead to specific changes in gut bacteria that could fight harmful inflammation -- a major discovery for patients suffering from Crohn's disease, research indicates. Crohn's disease, a type of inflammatory bowel syndrome, causes debilitating intestinal swelling, cramping, and diarrhea".

Betanin is a phytochemical in the class of red and yellow indole-derived pigments of betacyanins, belonging to the group of Betalains, found abundantly in beets, chard, etc.

With an aim to find a treatment for inflammatory bowel disease (IBS), researchers examined the effect of beetroot (Beta vulgaris var. Rubra) products and their major component betanin on the reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and DNA damage in vitro.

In neutrophils isolated from the blood of patients with inflammatory bowel disease--ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn's disease (CD), injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h increased DNA damage, according to the comet assay.

However, in Caco-2 cells. injection of betanin at 100 μM for 24 h showed a lesser pronounced stimulation of DNA damage.

Treatment of Caco-2 cells with H2O2 caused a 4-fold increase of DNA strand breaks in comparison to untreated cells, but pre-treatment with betanin reduced DNA damage in these cells.

In other words, betanin exerted a cytotoxic effect against the DNA-alternated cells but inhibited the free radical expression in the induction of DNA damage in normal cells.

More precisely, betanin led to the release of ROS and apoptotic cell death.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " betanin may exert anti-inflammatory and potentially cancer-preventive activity".

Taken altogether, betanin may be considered a supplement for the prevention and treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, pending the confirmation of a larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of betanin in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
