Omega -3 Fatty Acids Inhibits the Risk Of Biliary Tract Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The digestive system consists of the gastrointestinal tract and other parts of the accessory organs of digestion including the tongue, salivary glands, pancreas, liver, and gallbladder, involved in the function of breaking down food into smaller and smaller components then absorbed before passing them as nutrients and fluids to the body.

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

Most cases of cancer begin in the cells on the surface of the inner lining tissues of the organ or gland. At the early stage, most cancers are asymptomatic.

However, at the advanced stage, most cancers not can induce common symptoms such as gastrointestinal discomforts, unintended weight loss, loss of appetite and fatigue but also localized symptoms depending on the affected tissues and organs.

Cancers at this stage also can travel a distance away from the original site to induce secondary metastasis.

According to the statistics provided by the American cancer society, in 2018,1,735,350 new cases were diagnosed, representing more than 4,700 new cancer diagnoses each day.
The lifetime probability of being diagnosed with cancer is 39.7% for men and 37.6% for women.

Gastrointestinal (GI) cancer is a group of cancers, affecting the digestive system, including esophagus, gallbladder & biliary tract, liver, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, bowel, and anus

Bile duct, the tube-like structure carries bile to the intestine for food digestion secreted by the liver through the common bile duct.

Bile duct cancer is a condition caused by the malignant cells originated from the cells in the duct. the condition is more likely to affects people between the age of 50 - 70 with an annual incident rate of fewer than 2 cases per 100,000 in the Western world.

Most common symptoms of biliary tract cancer are
* Abdominal pain
Due to the enlarged tumor that has blocked the flow of bile.
&Jaundice
Any blockage of the flow of bile will reduce liver function in waste procession, in this case, it is the death of blood cells.
* Weight loss
Weight loss is a general cause of cancer
* Itching
Due to abnormal function in toxins procession.
* Fever
As a result of infection or inflammation
* Stool or urine color change
Due to bile flows back to the liver.
* Enlarged liver
May be caused by a backflow of bile
* Nausea and vomiting
They are the general symptoms of cancer
* Loss of appetite
Another general symptom of cancer

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of cancers, researchers examined the omega 3 fatty acid effects in the improvement of the completion rate of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with BTC.

According to the tested analysis from the previous studies
Without Omega 3 fatty acids added to the chemo treatment
* Multimodal treatment prolongs the survival of patients with biliary tract cancer (BTC).

* Chemotherapy choices for this disease are few, and completing each chemotherapy session is important.

* Adjuvant chemotherapy has been attempted for BTC, but has only had a 75% completion rate.

* Induced body weight loss and cholangitis are reasons for the interruption of chemotherapy.

With Omega 3 fatty acid added to the chemotherapy

* Nutritional intervention with omega-3 fatty acids maintained body weight and improved the completion rate for chemotherapy.

* Omega-3 fatty acids have an anti-inflammatory effect against the onset of symptoms of chemo treatment

* Omega-3 fatty acids would improve the completion rate of adjuvant chemotherapy in patients with BTC.

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered adjunct therapy for the treatment of biliary tract cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
