Common Fig or Fig (Ficus carica) Processes Anti Stomach/Gastric Cancer Activity in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Stomach cancer is a condition of abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach caused by the alternation of the cell DNA. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

According to the American Cancer Society, in 2018, approximately 26,240 new cases of stomach cancer were diagnosed, including 6,520 men and 9,720 women, and gastric cancer caused the death of 10,800 people including 6,510 men and 4,290 women.

The 5 years survival rate of localized gastric cancer is 67%, compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

Fig is a species of F. Carica, belonging to the family Moraceae. It is a deciduous shrub, native to Southeast Asia. The tree can grow to a height of 33 ft and the fruit can be as large as 2.0 inches.

On finding natural compounds for the treatment of malignant tumors researchers examined the effect of fig tree latex (Ficus carica) on stomach cancer line.

The study included different doses of fig tree latex that were incubated with the stomach cancer cell line and the peripheral blood mononuclear cells in a period of 72 hours.
According to the tested differentiation,
* Fig tree latex showed a significant anti-cancer activity by blocking the proliferation of cancer cell lines through its cytotoxicity without causing harm to human normal cells.

* Furthermore, the stomach cancer cell line was more sensitive to Ficus carica latex than normal cells.

Moreover, Ficus carica latex induced cancer cell death might be attributed to the presence of proteolytic enzymes, which has been found to be involved in the degradation of the cancer cells extracellular matrix and inhibited cancer invasion and metastasis.

Taken altogether, common fig or fig (Ficus carica)  may be considered a remedy for the prevention and treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
