Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Heart Tissues Against Cardio-Toxicity

By Kyle J. Norton

Cardiotoxicity is a condition caused by toxin accumulated in the heart that leads to damage to the heart muscle.

Cardiotoxicity reduced the heart pumping blood capability, leading to a decrease in oxygen-rich blood to nourish the body tissues and organs.

The most common symptoms of cardiotoxicity, are tiredness fatigue, chronic cough, water retention and shortness of breath.

If you have experienced some of the aforementioned symptoms that can be healed within a week or 2, please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

The most common causes of cardiotoxicity are associated with patients receiving chemotherapy and the intake of certain medications. However, infection, excessive alcohol consumption, medical conditions such as diabetes and thyroid disease, high blood pressure and thiamine and Vitamin B deficiency have also been found to induce cardiotoxicity.

Cardiomyopathy is a severe case of cardiotoxicity.

Cardiomyopathy in most occurs in patients under chemotherapy. However, a group of diseases or disorders can also lead to the damaged heart muscle. Injury to the heart muscle may induce cardiomyopathy, including viruses - such as human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), infection, long-standing high blood pressure, chronic or long-term alcohol use, and diabetes.

Conventionally, treatment of cardiotoxicity depending on the cause of the disease may include
* Beta-blockers, for the improvement of the blood flow and reduction of palpitations, arrhythmias, and high blood pressure.

*ACE inhibitors induce (widen) the arterial dilation and improvement of the blood flow.

* Diuretics, by getting rid of excess fluids that reduce heart function in blood pumping

Ashwagandha also is known as Withania somnifera is a nightshade plant in the genus of Withania, belonging to the family Solanaceae, native to the dry parts of India, North Africa, Middle East, and the Mediterranean.

The herbal medicine has been considered as Indian ginseng and used in Ayurvedic medicine over 3000 years to treat tumors and tubercular glands, carbuncles, memory loss, and ulcers and considered as anti-stress, cognition-facilitating, anti-inflammatory, and anti-aging herbal medicine.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases, researchers examined the protective effect of a purified extract of Withania somnifera against doxorubicin-induced cardiac toxicity in rats.

According to the results of the experiment, doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) -induced cardiac toxicity in male Wistar rats showed an increase of necrosis and apoptosis in heart tissues.

Furthermore, the elevation of malondialdehyde and protein carbonyl levels and catalase activity associated with the expression of oxidative stress also wee found in the doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats.

The doxorubicin (10 mg/kg) rats also exhibited depletion of total antioxidant capacity and of superoxide dismutase level in cardiac tissues, accompanied by the increases of myeloperoxidase activity, total calcium content, and the expression of Bcl-2 protein in heart tissues.

Most importantly, all parameters induced by the injection of doxorubicin alterations were effectively attenuated by the administration of the purified standardized extract (1.5% withanolides; manufactured by Idea Sphere Inc., American Fork, UT, USA) of Withania somnifera (300 mg/kg).

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Thus, Withania may play a role in the protection against cardiotoxicity and thus might be a useful adjuvant therapy where doxorubicin is the cancer-treating drug".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the prevention and treatment of Cardiotoxicity induced by medications,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Cruciferous Vegetables Kill Non-Small Cell Lung Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

The lung is a vital organ of the humans located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the US.

Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,

* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

The most common risk factors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are long term smoking and people exposed to long-term second-hand smoke.

According to the statistics, 2019, approximately 228,150 adults including 116,440 men and 111,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Lung cancer makes up about 13% of all new cancer diagnoses. Black men are about 20% more likely to get lung cancer than white men.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activity of Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables on two non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines, A549, and CL1-5 cells.

SFN exhibited more potent cytotoxicity against suspending rather than adherent cancer cells.

The inhibition of SFN was attributed to the induction of anoikis. evidenced by a loss of normal cell-matrix interactions, markers of apoptosis, and activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

Furthermore, SFN also inhibited NSCLC cell to form spherical colonies, to induce proliferation.

Moreover, SFN also suppressed the activation of signaling pathways to induce cancer cell adhesion.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results provide new insight into mechanisms underlying the chemopreventive ability of SFN and suggest a potential benefit of SFN to interfere with tumor metastasis".

Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids May Be Effective Against Psoriasis, Some Studies Show

By Kyle J. Norton

Psoriasis is a skin condition characterized by the speeds up of the life cycle of skin cells, leading to cells build up rapidly on the surface of the skin.

Symptoms of psoriasis caused by the extra skin cells form scales and red patches can be itchy and painful.

Epidemiologically, psoriasis patches can range from a few spots or large areas. A most common form of psoriasis is plaque psoriasis, a condition that induces dry, raised, red skin lesions (plaques) covered with silvery scales.

The causes of psoriasis are not identified, however, researchers believed that genetic proposition exacerbated by certain factors such as weather, injury, illness, or stress are some of the most causative factors that induce the onset of the condition.

Certain risk factors such as family history, viral and bacterial infections, weakened immune systems, persistent stress, are associated with the risk of psoriasis.

Other risk factors associated with psoriasis may include skin injury that did not heal properly, people who are obese and side effects of long term use of certain medicines such as oral steroids.

Some researchers suggested smoking that has a strong impact on the immune system may also be one of the major causes of psoriasis in smokers.

Conventionally, topical corticosteroids are the most commonly prescribed medication for the treatment fo the condition, particularly in patients with mild to moderate psoriasis.

According to the joint study led by the University of Trieste, the increased incidence of a large number of diseases that share an inflammatory origin probably due to the pro-inflammatory cytokine spillover from active psoriatic lesions, leading to a large inflammation on distant tissues(95).

Additionally, the Brigham and Women's Hospital, and Harvard Medical School, Boston joint study suggested, individuals with psoriasis have increased blood levels of uric acid. In the documented 2217 incident cases of gout during follow-up. Psoriasis was associated with an increased risk of subsequent gout with a multivariate HR of 1.71

Omega-3 fatty acids are phytochemicals in the class of lipids, found abundantly in deepsea fisk, dark-green leafy vegetables, grains, legumes, nuts, etc.

The three main components of Omega-3 fatty acids are alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA).

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of skin diseases, researchers examined the efficacy and mechanism of action of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) on psoriasis.

The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials that search the databases of the PubMed/MEDLINE and EMBASE all randomized controlled trials and prospective observational studies compared the 3 PUFAs effects versus control in adult patients with psoriasis.

Out of 12 articles identified in a total of 732 articles that were searched, some studies found that n-3 PUFAs were associated with improvements in the PASI score, erythema, scaling, itching, an area involved and infiltration.

However, some studies did not find a reduction in scaling, erythema, area involved or thickness in the treatment group.

Based on the findings researchers said, "It is still inconclusive whether the use of n-3 PUFAs in patients with psoriasis is associated with improvements in the severity of psoriasis and other outcomes".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of psoriasis, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Omega -3 Fatty Acids Lowers the Risk of Oral Cancer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Oral cancer is a medical condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the oral cavity, due to the alternation of cell DNA.

In the early stage, the abnormal cells only appear in the surface lining of the cavity. However, in the late stage, the infectious cells may travel a distance away from the original site to invade other cells and tissue.

Early diagnosed oral cancer may have a close to 100% recovery.

According to the cancer society, the 5 survival rate of oral cancer is about 60% plus without taking into consideration the stage of cancer.

According to the Oral Cancer Foundation in the article "Oral Cancer Fact", in the US, approximately, 50000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause about 10,000 deaths.

Family history, smoking, alcohol drinking, infected by HPV virus, poor hygiene and genetic preposition are some of the risk factors associated with the disease.

Most common types of oral cancer are
* Squamous cell carcinoma
Squamous cell carcinoma is one of the most common types of oral cancer accounting for over 90% of all cases and arises from the squamous cell layer in the lining of the oral cavity and oropharynx.

* Verrucous carcinoma
The low grade and rarely spread verrucous carcinoma is accounted for only approximately 5% of all cases. Cancer can spread deeply into the surrounding tissue.

* Minor salivary gland cancers
The cancer is originated from the salivary gland accounted for less than 1% of all cases.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic diseases, researchers investigated the chemopreventive effects of various dietary n-6 and n-3 fatty acids in a 9,10-dimethyl-1,2-benz[a]-anthracene (DMBA)- and betel quid extract (BQE) -induced hamster oral cancer model.

The selected thirty 6-week-old adult male hamsters included in the study were divided into normal, low, and high dietary n-6 and n-3 fatty acid groups under DMBA + BQE treatment for 16 weeks.

According to the tested analysis,
* The low dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid group exhibited a significantly lower tumor number, volume, and burden than those of the other groups.

In other words, high levels of n-3 fatty acids compared to low levels of n-6 fatty acids induced a strong inhibition of the initiation and progression of oral cancer cells.

In the right buccal pouch tissue, the low dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid group had significantly lower nuclear factor-κB associated with pro-inflammatory expression, proliferating cell nuclear antigen, and cyclin D1 expression in cell cycle division.

More precisely, high levels of n-3 fatty acids compared to low levels of n-6 fatty acids inhibited the parameters involved in oral cancer proliferation.

Collectively, researchers concluded, " the lower dietary n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio exerted chemopreventive effects in the DMBA- and BQE-induced hamster oral cancer model".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of oral cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Dandelion(Taraxacum officinale) in the Promotion of Anti-inflammatory Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

The immune system formed part of the body's defense plays a critical role in the protection of the body against infectious organisms.

The immune system executes the defense strategy through a series of the immune response by attacking foreign substances that invade body systems to cause disease.

A variety of factors have been found to trigger immune responses include pathogens, damaged cells, and toxic compounds.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.

Acute inflammation is a natural and systematic immune response to protect our body against the invasion of foreign bacteria and viruses by the initiated production of inflammatory cytokines to the site of infection.

However, overproduction of pro-inflammatory cytokines initiated by the immune system for a prolonged period of time may lead to cell damage and sometimes death of the healthy cells in the infectious site and nearby tissues.

These complications can also cause improper healing for the forming of scars and damage to the tissue of the organ, affecting and limiting the organs functioning, such as liver scars caused by hepatitis virus infection.

Badly enough, some proteins process the duo functions of pro and anti-inflammation. Under abnormal conditions, they can switch from their original action of anti-inflammatory cytokines to pro-inflammatory cytokines.

Furthermore, chronic inflammation occurred that lasts for months or years when the immune system response to the site of infection failure to eliminate agents that cause acute inflammation.

An autoimmune disorder that attacks normal healthy tissue, mistaking them for pathogens that can also cause chronic inflammatory disease.

Most cases of inflammation, are treated with NSAID's, or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. However, in some people intake of these medications can cause common and serious side effects, including gastrointestinal issues, such as pain, constipation, diarrhea, gas, nausea, and stomach ulcers, kidney problems, anemia,.... and swelling in the leg.

Dandelion is a herbaceous perennial plant, genus Taraxacum, belongings to the family Asteraceae, native to temperate regions of the world. It has been used in traditional and herbal medicine to treat gout, eczema, acne, gall bladder, kidney, liver and urinary disorders, hypoglycemia, dyspepsia with constipation, edema, blood pressure, and heart weakness, chronic joint, skin diseases, etc.

On finding a natural ingredient for the promotion of immune functioning, scientists examined inflammatory effects and the mechanism of taraxasterol in LPS-stimulated BV2 microglial cells.

According to the tested differentiation of BV2 microglia cells that were treated with taraxasterol 12 h before LPS stimulation, taraxasterol showed an inhibition activity on LPS-induced TNF-α and IL-1β production of pro-inflammatory cytokines.

The western blot analysis suggested that taraxasterol also demonstrated an inhibitory effect in the activation of proteins associated with the initiation of the innate immune response induced by the LPS stimulation.

More precisely, taraxasterol dose-dependently inhibited LPS-induced TNF-α and IL-1β production and NF-κB activation.

Furthermore, the injection of taraxasterol also disrupted the formation of lipid rafts, the subdomains of the plasma membrane that contain high concentrations of cholesterol and glycosphingolipids, and inhibited the translocation of TLR4associated with activation of pro-inflammatory cytokines in the lipid rafts.

Moreover, taraxasterol was found to activate the signaling pathway involved in cholesterol efflux from cells.

Collectively, researchers said, " the anti-inflammatory effect of taraxasterol was attenuated by transfection with LXRα siRNA. In conclusion, these results suggested that taraxasterol inhibits LPS-induced inflammatory response in BV2 microglia cells by activating the LXRα-ABCA1 signaling pathway".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered a remedy for modulation of the immune response, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Herbal Angelica Protects The Stomach Cells Against the Onset of Gastric Cancer

By Kyle J. Norton

The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract. The pyloric sphincter is a muscular valve that opens to allow food to pass from the stomach to the small intestine.

The stomach secretes acid and enzymes to digest food.  The stomach muscles contract periodically, churning food to aid digestion.

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a chronic condition characterized by irregular cell growth in the tissues of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric cancer.

Most people with primary cancer have an increased risk of secondary cancers of the thyroid and small intestine.

More precisely, common site metastasises from primary gastric cancer is the secondary liver (48%), peritoneum (32%), lung (15%), and bone (12%).

Most cases of gastric cancer start in the cells on the surface of the inner lining of stomach tissue.
Due to the small size at the early stage, gastric cancer is asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, after penetrating into the deeper layers of the stomach, the cancer cell may travel a distance away to infect other healthy tissues and organs, leading to secondary metastasis.

At this stage, most patients with gastric cancer may experience symptoms of severe abdominal pain caused by the suppressing of the oversize tumor on the nerve cells, or vague discomfort in the abdomen, usually above the navel, particularly heartburn and indigestion, accompanied by general symptoms shared with other types of cancer.

According to the statistics provided by the American Cancer Society, in 2019, approximately, 27,510 cases of stomach cancer will be diagnosed (17,230 in men and 10,280 in women) and 11,140 people will die from gastric cancer (6,800 men and 4,340 women).

Overall, the 5-year survival rate for people with gastric cancer is 31%. Cancer diagnosed at the localized stage have a 5 years survival rate of 67%.

In Canada, Gastric cancer affects 2.1% of male cancer patients and 1.3% of female cancer patients.

The most common causative risk factor of gastric cancer is infection with a common bacteria, H. pylori, which were found to cause ulcers and Inflammatory gastritis,.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of digestive diseases, scientists examined the effects of danggui (Chinese angelica) isolated compound N-butylidenephthalide (BP) on gastric cancer.

Angelica or danggui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

The herb has been used as a Queen herb in traditional Chinese medicine antispasmodic and vasodilatory agent, and to balance the hormones in women for a normal menstrual cycle and menstruation and strengthen heart, spleen, kidneys, and liver for both men and women, etc. In other words, it is used to treat gynecological ailments, fatigue, mild anemia, and high blood pressure. It has analgesic, anti-inflammatory, etc.

According to results that angelica used for the treatment in patients with gastric cancer, using data from Taiwan's National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD),
* Danggui users showed an increased survival rate, compared with non-danggui users.

* Treatment of danggui are highly associated with decreased mortality.

* Furthermore, in vitro results BP inhibited gastric cancer cell proliferation, and induced cellular apoptosis depending on the activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

* Moreover, BP caused an increase of REDD1 expression associated with the regulation of cell damage that inhibits mTOR signaling involved in tumor formation and angiogenesis.

Additionally, BP also suppressed the growth of AGS xenografts tumor in vivo.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "Danggui can prolong the survival rate of gastric cancer patients in Taiwan. BPDD1 expression leading to mTOR signal pathway inhibition in gastric cancer cells. BP inhibited the in vivo growth of AGS xenograft tumors".

Taken altogether, Danggui processed abundantly bioactive compound N-butylidenephthalide (BP)  may be considered an herbal medicine for the treatment of gastric cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Healthy Veggie Broccoli Inhibits the Onset of Stomach Cancer in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is a class of chronic diseases associated with irregular cell growth in the tissues of the affected organ.
The stomach located between the esophagus and the small intestine is a muscular, hollow and important organ of the digestive tract.

The stomach plays a critical role to assist the digestive system in digesting foods by secreting acid and enzymes.

Gastric/Stomach cancer is a medical condition characterized by abnormal growth of the mucus-producing cells of the inside lining of the stomach. Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of gastric/stomach cancer.

According to the statistics, most cases of gastric/stomach cancer are found in older people. The average age of people when they are diagnosed is 68. The risk of developing gastric/stomach cancer in a man lifetime is about 1 in 95.

The causes of gastric cancer are debatable, but some researchers suggested that people with chronic
gastrointestinal reflux disease (GERD), a condition caused by the frequent backflow of stomach acid into the esophagus, is the most likely to develop the disease(4).

Other diseases associated with the early onset of gastric cancer are obesity and smoking(4).

According to the Universidad de Salamanca, bacteria and viruses, including Helicobacter pylori are strongly associated with chronic gastritis, clinical syndromes, precancerous lesions, and pathogenesis of gastric cancer development(5).

Most patients with stomach cancer in the early stage are asymptomatic.

However, at the later stage, patients may experience symptoms of pain and/or discomfort in the stomach area, mild ache in the upper part of the body, difficulty swallowing, feeling full or bloated after a small mealy, and vomiting blood or having blood in the stool accompanied by general symptoms shared by other types of cancer, including unintentional weight loss, loss of energy, tiredness, nausea, and vomiting and loss of appetite.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of chronic disease, researchers examined the inhibitory effect of SFN, a bioactive compound found in broccoli on gastric cancer.

According to the results of differentiation, SFN treatment significantly decreases the tumorsphere formation and the expression levels of gastric cancer stem cells (CSCs) markers.

Furthermore, SFN exerted inhibitory effects by suppressing proliferation and inducing apoptosis in gastric CSCs.

Moreover, Intriguingly, SFN inhibited the activation of Sonic Hh, a key pathway in maintaining the stemness of gastric CSCs.
Based on the results, researchers wrote, "Collectively, these data revealed that SFN could be a potent natural compound targeting gastric CSCs via suppression of the Sonic Hh pathway, which might be a promising agent for gastric cancer intervention".

Taken altogether, broccoli may process anti stomach cancer activity, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidant Moronic Acid, a Natural and Potential Anti-HIV Agents

By Kyle J. Norton

Human immunodeficiency virus -1 (HIV-1) is one of 2 types of HIV precipitated of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS), transmitted through direct contact with HIV-infected body fluids, including blood, semen, and genital secretions,...

Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a chronic condition caused by the infection of the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV).

According to epidemiological studies, people who serval sexual partners are the most at risk of HIV infection.

However, the virus can also transmit through infected blood transfusion, infected mother to children.

Most people infected by the HIV virus may experience symptoms of fever, muscle aches and joint pain similar to those of influenza in the early stage of the viral attacks.

People in the early stage infected by the virus may experience some acute symptoms caused by the immune response, including fever sore throat, rash, muscle and joint aches and pains, headache,...

If untreated, the virus will slowly multiply and destroy the cells of the immune system, leading to chronic signs and symptoms of fever, fatigue, swollen lymph nodes,...

In the late stage, HIV-1 may severely damage the immune system, making the infected host vulnerable to a variety of life-threatening diseases and cancers. If an infected individual has the numbers of T-cell count below 200, the person is considered to have AIDs.

According to the statistic, AIDS is the fifth leading cause of death in the US.

People between ages 25 and 44 in the United States are at substantially higher risk compared to other age groups.

According to statistics, approximately 36.7 million people worldwide living with HIV/AIDS in 2016, including, 2.1 million children less than 15 years of age.

Moronic acid is a phytochemical in the subclass of Triterpenoid, belonging to the group of Terpenes found in extracted from Rhus javanica, Mistletoe, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention of viral infection, researchers compared the anti-HIV activity of seven new triterpene derivatives.

According to the results of differentiation,
* Moronic acid derivatives 19, 20, and 21 showed significant activity in HIV-1 infected H9 lymphocytes.

* Furthermore, in the MT-4 cell line, compounds 19 and 20 showed strong effects against HIV-1 NL4-3 and drug-resistant strains in the MT-4 cell line compared to the betulinic acid analog 8 (PA-457), which has successfully completed a Phase IIa clinical trial.

* Moreover, the compound 20 showed potent anti-HIV activity with EC50 values of 0.0085 microM against NL4-3, 0.021 microM against PI-R (a multiple protease inhibitor resistant strain), and 0.13 microM against FHR-2 (an HIV strain resistant to 8).

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Promising compound 20 has become a new lead for modification, and further development of 20-related compounds as clinical trial candidates is warranted".

Taken altogether, moronic acid may be considered a promising anti-HIV agent,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of moronic acid in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Ashwagandha Protects the Heart Against Damage in Post Myocardial Injury

By Kyle J. Norton

The circulatory system consists of the heart, blood vessels, and blood with the function to transport of nutrients, oxygen, and hormones to cells throughout the body and removal of metabolic wastes (carbon dioxide, nitrogenous wastes).

Cardiovascular disease is a class of chronic conditions associated with the heart and blood vessels.

According to the statistic cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death in women in the US with 90% of women having one risk factor.

Believe it or not, women are 4 times more likely to die from heart disease than breast cancer and 2/3 of women are not aware of heart disease risk for them, according to the Jean Hailes for Women Health in the article cardiovascular health.

Heart disease is a class of diseases associated with interruption of blood flow in the blood vessel or damage of the heart tissue, including coronary artery diseases (CAD) such as angina and myocardial infarction.

According to the statistics, heart disease is a leading cause of death in the US. Approximately 2000 people in the general population die of heart disease every day.

Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the most common type of heart disease, that kills over 370,000 people annually.

The causes of cardiovascular diseases are associated with the accumulation of plaques in the arteries, impeding the blood flow which carries the nutrients and oxygen to the heart, causing damage to the heart tissue and reduced function of the arteries.

In other words, high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, smoking, diabetes, weight, depression and family history associated with the early onset of plaques accumulated and impeding function of the arteries are the prevalent risk factors of cardiovascular diseases.

The World Heart Foundation, in the investigation of CVD, suggested that CVD risk factors can be classified by
* Non-Modified risk factors such as age, ethnic background,....... and family history. The risk that can not be controlled

* Modified risk factors such as smoking, high blood cholesterol, and pressure, diabetes physical inactivity,.... and overweight. These types of risks can be controlled through a change in lifestyle and diet.

In the urgency to discover a natural ingredient for the promotion of cardio-functioning, researchers examined the efficacy of Withania somnifera (Ws) to limit myocardial injury after ischemia and reperfusion compared to that of Vit E,

The study included Wistar rats (150-200 g) that were divided into six groups and received orally saline (sham, control group), Ws-50/kg (Ws control and treated group) and Vit E-100 mg/kg (Vit E control and treated group) respectively for 1 month.

According to the results of the experiment of Vit E and Ws treated groups that were anesthetized subjected to 45 min occlusion of the LAD coronary artery followed by 60 min reperfusion on the 31st day,

* Postischemic reperfusion rats showed significant cardiac necrosis, depression of left ventricular functions (MAP, LVEDP, (+) and (-)LVdP/dt) and a significant fall in GSH (p < 0.01), SOD, CAT (p < 0.05).

* Postischemic reperfusion rats also demonstrated a fail in LDH and increased cardio stress markers and levels of  MDA, compared to the sham group.

* In comparison tested, Ws and Vit E favorably modulated most of the hemodynamic, biochemical and histopathological parameters though no significant restoration in GSH, mean arterial pressure VAP.

* More importantly, chronic administration of Ws on markedly augmented antioxidants (GSH, GSHPx, SOD, CAT) compared to Vit E that does not stimulate the synthesis of endogenous antioxidants compared to sham.

Based on the evidence, researchers said, "Ws significantly reduced myocardial injury and emphasize the beneficial action of Ws as a cardioprotective agent".

Taken altogether, Ashwagandha may be considered supplements for the treatment of myocardial injury, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli Modulates the Immune Response

By Kyle J. Norton

Immunomodulators are agents that modify the immune response or the functioning of the immune system such as the stimulation of antibody formation or the inhibition of abnormal white blood cell activity.

In other words, immunomodulation processed immunotherapy, in which immune responses are induced depending on the body's needs.

The immune system is the set of cells and their activity against antigens or infectious agents that comprises the body's defense system against diseases.

The immune system does a great job of keeping people healthy and preventing infections.

Besides foods and nutritional supplements, herbs also play important roles in helping the immune system to defend against viruses and bacteria attacks.

The immune response is a natural reaction of the immune system to protect our body against the invasion of foreign substances.

Inflammation is a natural response of the immune system which protects the body against the invasion of pathogens.

In the acute phase of infection, the immune system initiated the production of proinflammatory Th1 cytokines in activated interleukin-12 (IL-12) and gamma interferon (IFN-γ) and other pro-inflammatory factors such as TNF beta in response to detect, engulf and destroy pathogens and apoptotic cells through macrophages.

These activities played an important in inducing apoptosis and reducing the proliferation of bacteria or viruses by attaching to the surface of the injured cells to initiation of an alternation. however, overproduction of pro-inflammatory expression may indeed cause substantial adverse effects in tissue destruction, and, in some cases, shock and death.

Type 1 T helper (Th1) in response to tissue damage and injure also activated macrophages that are responsible for cell-mediated immunity and phagocyte-dependent protective activity.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belongings to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color with a mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant from the continent of Europe.

On findings a natural wholefood for the prevention of infectious disease, researchers examined the effects of Quercetin, a great representative of polyphenols, flavonoids subgroup, flavonols found in broccoli on the immune response.

Quercetin exhibited antioxidant activity in radical scavenging and anti-allergic properties by stimulation of the immune system against the antiviral activity, histamine release,

Furthermore, quercetin also modulated the immune response by decreasing the pro-inflammatory cytokines, leukotrienes creation, and suppressing interleukin IL-4 production.

The antioxidant improved the Th1/Th2 balance, and restrain antigen-specific IgE antibody formation.

Moreover, quercetin was also effective in the inhibition of enzymes such as lipoxygenase, eosinophil, and peroxidase by suppressing inflammatory mediators.

Based on the results, researchers wrote, " All mentioned mechanisms of action contribute to the anti-inflammatory and immunomodulating properties of quercetin that can be effectively utilized in the treatment of late-phase, and late-late-phase bronchial asthma responses, allergic rhinitis, and restricted peanut-induced anaphylactic reactions".

And "Plant extract of quercetin is the main ingredient of many potential anti-allergic drugs, supplements and enriched products".

Taken altogether, broccoli containing high amounts of quercetin may be considered a functional food for the improvement of the immune response,  pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Omega-3 Fatty Acids Inhibit the Chain Reaction of Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS)

By Kyle J. Norton

Reactive oxygen species (ROS) or free radicals are highly reactive chemical species containing oxygen molecules. In other words, free radicals are unstable atoms with an unpaired electron in the outer ring.

Therefore, in order to become stable, free radicals must either donate or steal an electron from other atoms, leading to a chain reaction that can not be stopped until all electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

Believe it or not, free radicals in moderate amounts are needed for our body for cell signaling and activation of several transcriptional factors, apoptosis, immunity, and differentiation. However, overexpression of free radicles can cause damage to protein, lipid, and cell alternation, leading a number of chronic illnesses, including cancer.

Free radicals are generated as metabolic by-products by biological systems. Environmental stressors (i.e., the air we breathe, UV, ionizing radiations, pollutants, and heavy metals) and xenochemicals are also found to contribute to the great increase of ROS production.

In a healthy individual, the production of free radicals is balanced by the antioxidant enzymes produced by the body.

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid, and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of diseases associated with oxidative stress, researchers examined the intake of EPA:DHA 6:1 (500 mg/kg/day) for 2 weeks on endothelial dysfunction in old rats (20 months old).

According to the results of the analysis,
Before application with DHA
* Endothelial dysfunction characterized by a blunted NO component, an abolished endothelium-dependent hyperpolarization component, and increased endothelium-dependent contractile responses (EDCFs) are observed in old rats compared to young rats.

* Furthermore, age-related endothelial dysfunction was found to increase the vascular formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and expression of eNOS.

After treatment with DHA
* The EPA:DHA 6:1 treatment improved the NO-mediated relaxation, reduced the EDCF-dependent contractile response and the vascular formation of ROS, and normalized the expression level of all target proteins in the old arterial wall.

Collectively, researchers said, "a 2-week intake of EPA:DHA 6:1 by old rats restored endothelium-dependent NO-mediated relaxations, most likely, by preventing the upregulation of the local angiotensin system and the subsequent formation of ROS".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids found abundantly in fish oil and plant oil may be considered a functional food for the prevention of diseases associated with ROS, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Herbal Angelica Promotes the Healing of Gastric Ulcer in Vivo

By Kyle J. Norton

Gastric ulcer is the medical condition characterized by the open sores that develop on the inside lining of the stomach. If the open sores are developed in the upper part of the small intestine, it is a duodenal ulcer.

The most common cause of the gastric ulcer, represented over 30% of all cases is associated with the infection of H. pylori.

Certain medical conditions such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome and long-term use of some medication such as alendronate (Fosamax) and risedronate (Actonel) are also prevalent factors that elevate the disease onset.

The imbalance between stomach acid and upper GI tract mucosa is the main cause of the condition onset associated with the use of certain medication, including aspirin, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, Helicobacter pylori infection and chronic gastritis.

Most common symptoms of a gastric ulcer are gastrointestinal discomforts, blood in your stool, difficulty breathing, shortness of breath with physical activity, and persistent fatigue.

Some patients with severe gastric ulcers may also experience symptoms of vomiting blood, feeling faint or losing consciousness. However, 75% of patients with gastric ulcers do not feel any symptoms.

Long-term untreated gastric ulcer can result in gastric adenocarcinoma development.

Although there are some disagreements that a poor diet can cause gastric ulcers, some researchers suggested that a diet rich, fatty or spicy foods such as the Western diet and unhealthy lifestyle such as high caffeine. and excessive alcohol consumption also elevates the onset of the disease.

Therefore by following a healthy diet with more fruits and vegetables, whole grain and less red meat and processed foods accompanied by a healthy choice of lifestyle and moderate exercise, one can lower the risk gastric ulcer substantially.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of digestive diseases, scientists examined the crude extract from Angelica sinensis (ASCE) consisting of polysaccharides on normal gastric epithelial cells.

Angelica or Dang Qui is a herb of Genus Angelica from the family Apiaceae, indigenous to China.

According to the tested assays,
* ASCE showed a direct wound healing effect on gastric mucosa

* However, there is no report in which  ASCE exerted gastric ulcer healing in animal models.

* ASCE promoted ulcer healing by reducing the ulcer area, accompanied with a significant increase in mucus synthesis when compared with the control,

* Treatment of ASCE also inhibited angiogenesis, without affecting the cell proliferation associated with ODC and EGFR protein expression.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "This fraction demonstrated insignificant antimicrobial activity and can be used in cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries".

Taken altogether, Dandelion may be considered an antioxidant remedy for speeding up gastric ulcer healing, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Broccoli, the Potential Anti-Prostate Cancer Healthy Food

By Kyle J. Norton

Prostate warped around the around a tube (the urethra) is a gland of the male reproductive system found in front of the rectum and just below the bladder and responsible for making some of the semen that carries sperm.

Prostate cancer is a condition in which the cells of the prostate have become cancerous, causing abnormal cell growth which spread to the distant parts of the body. Most prostate cancers are slow-growing and enlarged prostate and prostate cancer may be detected during the Physical (rectum) exams.

Primary prostate cancer normally starts from the cell on the surface of the inner lining of the prostate tissue and gradually spreads to the deeper part of the prostate.

At the early stage, patients may not experience any symptoms, However, at the advanced stage, prostate cancer can induce symptoms of blood in the urine, frequent urination and urinary difficulty.

The cancer cells at this stage can also travel a distance away from the prostate to invade other healthy tissue and organ, leading secondary metastasis tumors.

According to the Canadian Cancer Society, in 2017, 21,300 men were diagnosed with prostate cancer, represented 21% of all new cancer cases and 4,100 men died from prostate cancer, and 10% of all cancer deaths.

The 5 years survival rate of localized prostate cancer is 100% and 98% of that of survivors are alive after 10 years compared to the advanced stage of only 31%.

More than 80% of prostate cancers are diagnosed in men who are 65 or older.

Therefore, men who are at higher risk of prostate cancer due to family history and increase in age and inherited gene changes should have their prostate gland checked annually.

Broccoli is a mustard/cabbage plant, belong to the family Brassicaceae. The veggie has large flower heads, usually green in color and the mass of flower heads surrounded by leaves and evolved from a wild cabbage plant on the continent of Europe.

On finding a potential plant that processes anticarcinogenic activity, researchers examined the effects of consuming broccoli soup on prostate tissue.

The study included 18 men scheduled for transperineal prostate biopsy recruited into a 4-week parallel single-blinded diet supplementation study (NCT02821728), with 9 men supplemented their diet with three 300 mL portions of a broccoli soup each week for four weeks prior to surgery.

According to the analyses of the prostate, biopsy tissues reveal no detectable levels of glucosinolates and derivatives on the baseline.

Where Glucosinolates (GLS) are secondary plant metabolites in cruciferous vegetables with a function to break-down products, prevention of cancer in animal and cell studies.

Injection of the supplementation of SMCSO demonstrated significantly higher levels of glucosinolates and derivatives in the tissue of men in the supplementation arm.

The urinary assay also suggested that SMCSO was found in blood and urine samples from a previous intervention study with the identical broccoli soup.

Based on the findings, researchers wrote, " The consequences of SMCSO accumulation in prostate tissues and its potential role in the prevention of prostate cancer...

In other words, the intake of SMCSO over a short period of time of 4 weeks reduces the risk of prostate cancer.
Taken altogether, the consequences of these results suggest that the broccoli process the potential anticarcinogenic activity by upregulating the gene associated with xenobiotic metabolism, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Antioxidants Omega -3 Fatty Acids in Reducing the Risk of Chronic Kidney Diseases in Females

By Kyle J. Norton

Kidneys are 2 bean-shaped organs found in the left and right side in the retroperitoneal space in the body.

The function of kidneys is to filter blood and control fluids. They are the second detoxed organs besides the liver and skin.

Due to millions of tiny filters called nephrons in each kidney, people may not experience any kidney dysfunction symptoms at an early stage.

Kidney diseases are a class of medical conditions associated with reduced function of the kidney, in cases, complete loss of kidney function such as kidney failure.

Believe it or not, in the US, the leading causes of kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases are diabetes and high blood pressure.

Some researchers suggested that if the 2 causative conditions are under control, kidney failure and the end stage of chronic kidney diseases may be prevented or delayed.

Chronic Kidney disease is a condition associated with the progressive loss of kidney function over a period of many years. Stage of chronic kidney disease according to the National Kidney Foundation's Kidney Disease Outcomes Quality Initiative (KDOQ).

Stages and Description of Glomerular Filtration Rate  GFR (the number used to figure out a person's stage of kidney disease)
1. Signs of mild kidney disease but with normal or better GFR greater than 90%.
2. Mild kidney disease with reduced GFR 60-89%.
3. Moderate chronic renal insufficiency 30-59%.
4. Severe chronic renal insufficiency 15-29%.
5. End-stage renal failure of less than 15%.

According to the statistics, in the US, over 660,000 Americans have kidney failure, affecting 14% of the general population.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the protection of kidney activity researchers examined intakes of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCω3PUFA) and its food source-fish-on chronic kidney diseases (CKD) incidence.

A total of 4133 healthy individuals of black and white race aged 18-30 at baseline (1985-1986) from the Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults study were enrolled and followed up over 25 years

According to the results of the assessment of LCω3PUFA and fish intake by an interview-based dietary history questionnaire at baseline, year 7 (1992-1993) and 20 (2005-2006),
* Four hundred and eighty-nine incident cases of CKD were identified.

* After adjustment for potential confounders, LCω3PUFA intake was inversely associated with CKD incidence.

* However, this inverse association was persisted among females [0.64 (95% CI 0.48, 0.84; P = 0.002], but not males.

* Non-fried fish consumption showed a marginally significant inverse association with CKD incidence.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "Dietary LCω3PUFA intake was inversely associated with the incidence of CKD among American young adults over 25 years of follow-up".

Taken altogether, Omega-3 fatty acids may be considered a functional food for the prevention and treatment of chronic kidney diseases,  particularly in females, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of Omega-3 fatty acids in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Japanese Angelica Exerts a Strong Neuro-Protective Activity

By Kyle J. Norton

Neuroprotection is a process to preserve the neuronal structure and/or function against the death or gradual death of neurons, including the use of medicines and herbs.

In other words, neuroprotection protects the neuronal integrity against the rate of neuronal loss over time, inducing neurological disease, including neurodegenerative disease.

Brain ischemia is a condition caused by insufficient blood flow to the brain to meet metabolic demand, leading to irreversible brain damage in severe cases.

In other words, brain ischemia-induced the death of neurons of the affected tissues.

A neuron or nerve cell made of a cell body (also called soma), dendrites and an axon, is a cell in the nervous system that carries electrical impulses.

Neurons are core components of the brain, spinal cord and peripheral nerves that play an essential role to process and transmit information.

The function of neurons can be classified into 3 types
* The sensory neurons found within the nervous system that convert external stimuli from the organism's environment into internal electrical impulses. In other words, sensory neurons are activated by sensory input from the environment, including physical input of sound, touch, heat, or light.

*The motor neurons transmit impulses from the spinal cord to skeletal and smooth muscles,. In other words, motor neurons directly control all of the muscle movements.

* The interneurons connect the motor and sensory neurons. In other words, the interneurons transfer signals between sensory and motor neurons.

Angelica shikokiana (Apiaceae) is a Japanese traditional herb that is widely marketed as a dietary food supplement as a health tea preparation consumed as a daily beverage for health benefits.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the prevention and treatment of neurological diseases researchers examined the neuroprotective activities of compounds from Angelica shikokiana Makino.

According to the chemical analysis,
* Quercetin showed a strong neuroprotective effect the strongest AChE (IC50 value = 35.5 µM) through binding to active-site peptides and activation of Tyr-70 residues at the catalytic and anionic sites of acetylcholine esterase, respectively.

* Furthermore, chemical compounds chlorogenic acid, angelica methyl ester, quercetin, and luteolin demonstrated a significantly protect neuro-2A cells against free radical H2O2-induced neurotoxicity by the scavenge hydroxyl radical and intracellular reactive oxygen species.

* Moreover, Kaempferol-3-O-rutinoiside, hyuganin E and isoepoxypteryxin found in the herbal medicine also significantly decreased Aβ25-35-induced neurotoxicity and Th-T fluorescence.

Taken altogether, Angelica shikokiana Makino processed abundantly bioactive compounds may be considered a supplement for neuroprotection, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of beta-Sitosterol in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.

Cooking Influences Cruciferous Vegetables's Antioxidants Capacities

By Kyle J. Norton

Antioxidants are stable atom that plays a critical role in protecting the body against the attack of free radicals.

In other words, antioxidants inhibited the onset of free radical before they can cause a chain reaction in facilitating the protein, lipid and cell damage.

Antioxidants can either produced by the liver or intake from dietary sources. Under normal conditions, antioxidant enzymes produced by the body in a healthy individual are good enough to counter the bombardment of free radical attacks.

However, in people with a weakened immune system, intake dietary sources of antioxidants may be necessary.

On the other hand, free radicals are highly reactive molecules with an unpaired electron on the outer ring of the atom.

Due to its nature to become stable, free radicals readily to donate or steal an electron from other molecules, leading to the chain of domino's effect that can not be stopped until either the electrons are paired or inhibited by antioxidants.

This chain of reaction is the cause of oxidative stress, a condition is associated with either overexpression of free radicals or depletion of antioxidant enzymes produced by the host organs.

Oxidative stress is a condition caused by an imbalance of the ratio of free radicals and antioxidants in the body.

Some researchers suggested that oxidative stress may also arise due to the chain reaction of free radicals in which free radicals donate or intercept an electron from other stable molecules.

On finding a natural antioxidant whole food, researchers examined the antioxidant activities of some Brassica vegetables.

According to the dietary information,
* The antioxidants in cruciferous vegetables were found to be influenced by antioxidant breakdown and leaching during cooking, particularly in heat cooking.

* Brassica vegetables, including cruciferous vegetables, perceived minor antioxidant ability in processed vegetables compared to uncooked samples.

* Food processing operations in terms of blanching, canning, sterilizing and freezing have a strong effect on the antioxidant capacity.

In other words, cooking methods perhaps can have a major influence on the yield, chemical structure, and bioavailability of antioxidants in the Brassica family.

More precisely, the consumption of raw or slightly blanched veggies is an appropriate way to maximize its health benefits.
