Cruciferous Vegetables Kill Non-Small Cell Lung Cells in Vitro

By Kyle J. Norton

Cancer is the class of diseases associated with the growth of the cells disorderly and uncontrollably due to the alternation of DNA.

The lung is a vital organ of the humans located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells' need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Lung cancer is a condition of the abnormal growth of the cells in the lung's tissue. The most common form of primary lung cancer is derived from epithelial cells. In the US.

Most common types of lung cancers include
* Squamous-cell carcinoma often found in an outer area of the lung,

* Large-cell carcinoma found in the center of the lung by an air tube

* Adenocarcinoma found in any part of the lung.

Non-small cell lung cancer, the most common type of lung cancer, usually grows and spreads methodically and predictably.

The most common risk factors of non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) are long term smoking and people exposed to long-term second-hand smoke.

According to the statistics, 2019, approximately 228,150 adults including 116,440 men and 111,710 women in the United States will be diagnosed with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Lung cancer makes up about 13% of all new cancer diagnoses. Black men are about 20% more likely to get lung cancer than white men.

Cruciferous vegetables are a group of vegetables, belongings to the family Brassicaceae (also called Cruciferae) with many genera, species, and cultivated all over the world in suitable climate for commercial profits, including cauliflower, cabbage, kale, garden cress, bok choy, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, and green leafy vegetables.

On finding a potential compound for the treatment of lung cancer, researchers examined the anti-metastatic activity of Sulforaphane (SFN), an isothiocyanate found in cruciferous vegetables on two non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) cell lines, A549, and CL1-5 cells.

SFN exhibited more potent cytotoxicity against suspending rather than adherent cancer cells.

The inhibition of SFN was attributed to the induction of anoikis. evidenced by a loss of normal cell-matrix interactions, markers of apoptosis, and activation of the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.

Furthermore, SFN also inhibited NSCLC cell to form spherical colonies, to induce proliferation.

Moreover, SFN also suppressed the activation of signaling pathways to induce cancer cell adhesion.

Based on the findings, researchers said, "These results provide new insight into mechanisms underlying the chemopreventive ability of SFN and suggest a potential benefit of SFN to interfere with tumor metastasis".

Taken altogether, Cruciferous vegetables may be considered functional foods for the prevention and treatment of non-small cell lung cancer, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
