Devil's claw (Harpagophytum procumbens) May Be Used for the Treatment of Migraine

By Kyle J. Norton

Migraine headache is one most common headaches associated with a condition of a chronic neurological disorder of moderate to severe headaches.

Nausea usually develops gradually over 5–20 minutes and lasts for less than 60 minutes.

According to the Research Migraine Foundation, nearly 1 in 4 U.S. households includes someone with migraines.

Approximately,  12% of the population suffers from migraines including 18% of American women, 6% of men, and 10% of children experience migraines.

Migraine is most common between the ages of 18 and 44.

Sadly, 1 in 7 people in the world population will develop migraine headaches at some points in their lifetime. And, chronic migraine affects about 2% of the world population.

More precisely, if you are women your risk of migraine headache is 2 times higher in comparison to men.

Some patients during migraine attacks also suffer symptoms of visual disturbances, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, extreme sensitivity to sound, light, touch and smell, and tingling or numbness in the extremities or face.

Conventional medicine in reduced symptoms of pain during attacks such as Sumatriptan, Rizatriptan,..and Eletriptan may be effective but they may induce certain side effects, including gastrointestinal discomfort, dizziness, drowsiness,... and muscle weakness.

According to the International Headache Society, complications of migraine headaches can be divided into
* Chronic migraine
Chronic migraines are headaches in the absence of medication overuse, occurring on ≥15 days per month for ≥3 months, of which headaches on ≥8 days must fulfill the criteria for migraines and they continue over a long period of time.

*  Status migrainosus
Status migrainosus is a condition of migraine episodes that persist for less than 3 days, but in most cases, there are periods of relative relief, but these generally last no longer than four hours.

* Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI)
Persistent aura without infarction (PAWI) is a rare complication of migraines with neurological and ophthalmological examinations.

* Migrainous infarction
Migrainous infarction is a rare complication after the usual attacks of migraines with aura.

* Migraine seizures
A migraine seizure is an epileptic seizure that follows a migraine with aura, meeting the definition for migraine with aura, and an epileptic seizure must occur within one hour of the migraine aura.

On finding a natural ingredient for the prevention and treatment of headaches, scientists reviewed literature articles and relevant books using Web of Knowledge and SciVerse Scopus databases.
Devil's claw also known as the wood spider, is a plant of genus Harpagophytum in the family of Pedaliaceae, native to South Africa.

The plant has been used as an herb in traditional and herbal medicine to treat fever, rheumatoid arthritis, skin, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach and kidneys conditions, etc.

According to tested analysis, devil's claw-derived compounds show considerable promise as novel drugs in migraine prevention and treatment.
However, their antimigraine action was unknown.

And its safety has not been determined.

Based on the results, researchers suggest, "It is necessary to conduct more research to better understand their antimigraine action, to confirm their effectiveness and safety, and to introduce them into clinical practice".

Taken altogether, Devil's claw a number of phytochemicals compounds may be considered a remedy for the treatment of migraine, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.
