Tocopherols, A Promising Phytochemical for the Treatment of Asthma

By Kyle J. Norton

Respiratory Disease is a class of medical conditions that affect the breathing organ and tissues including inflammatory lung disease, Obstructive lung diseases, Restrictive lung diseases, Respiratory tract infections, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, alveoli, the nerves and muscles breathing, etc.

The lungs formed part of the respiratory system are a vital organ of the human being, located near the backbone on either side of the heart with functions of inhaling oxygen from the air then transporting them to the bloodstream to nourish the body cells need and exhaling carbon dioxide from the bloodstream.

Additionally, the lung is also the first-line defense against inhaled particles and prevent the circulation of emboli such as blood clot (thrombus), a fat globule (fat embolism), a bubble of air or other gas (gas embolism), or foreign material.

Asthma is a chronic inflammatory disease affecting the airway of the lung with recurring symptoms, such as wheezing, chest tightness, shortness of breath, and coughing.

The disease affects people of all ages, and mostly starts during childhood.

During the asthma attacks, patients may experience symptoms of difficult breathing, and severe wheezing in the breath and coughs that won't stop.

According to the statistic provided by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), 1 in 13 people in the US has asthma.

In other words, more than 26 million Americans have asthma, with half of the patients are children.

If you experience symptoms of a cough which often worse at night or early in the morning, wheezing in your breath, accompanied by chest tightness and shortness of breath, you may be at the early stage of asthma. Please check with your doctor to rule out the possibility.

Genetic and environmental factors are the most common risk factors associated with the onset of asthma. Some researchers suggested that the widespread obesity over the past few decades may also have a strong implication on the onset of the disease.

Tocopherols are phytochemicals of which many have vitamin E activity, belongings to the group of Lipids, found abundantly in butter, egg yolk, milk fat, some vegetable, and seed or nut oils, etc.

On finding a potential phytochemical for the treatment of chronic lung diseases, researchers examined the effects of γ-tocopherols, a specific form of vitamin E, on asthma remission.

According to the analysis,
* γ-tocopherols possesses the capability to reduce the number of eosinophils associated with the immune response against allergy.

* γ-tocopherols inhibited the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines induced by the immune response by exudation of inflammatory cells together with the hyperplasia of goblet cells.

* γ-tocopherols also reduced the high levels of eotaxin, eosinophil chemotactic protein, and IL-4, proinflammatory cytokine in the asthma group comparable with hexadecadrol.

After talking about other factors into account, researchers said, "γ-tocopherols can remit asthma by regulating the level of eotaxin and IL-4. Moreover, γ-tocopherols may be regarded as a potential candidate for asthma treatment after much deeper explorations".

Taken altogether, tocopherols may be considered adjunct therapies in the treatment of asthma, pending to the confirmation of the larger sample size and multicenter human study.

Intake of tocopherols in the form of supplements should be taken with extreme care to prevent overdose acute liver toxicity.
